Aesop went to Boston University for visual arts. He has been making music since the late nineties. He did all of the illustrations in that short. He is the most unique writer I have encountered in my 39 years of listening to rap.

Glad you found Aesop. he has a heavy discography. one of the best to ever do it imo.

Just his solo discography is amazing and when you add in Hail Mary Marlon, The Uncluded, Malibu Ken and his production/features it's actually overwhelming to even think about.

Aesop knows every black crow in the city by it's first name, and it's surname, and it's bird call, and it's birthday. Conspiracy of ravens under his authority, delivering him trinketry, in chorus with regards from the king of the fucking Corvidae. He's cursed.
He can be tough to digest at first, but most of his simpler songs involve animals. Kittens, dogs, frogs, you name it, it's somewhere in his discography. Any of his official videos are unique visual art displays.
He loves all animals and plant life. Songbirds eat from his hand.

I'm pretty sure Aes did the drawings in the short as he is a visual artist with a fine arts degree. As a rapper his mastery of the english language and storytelling abilities are unmatched. A bout the Mike Tyson comment, it's well known the he has been into raising and flying pigeons since he was a child doing it on the rooftops in Brooklyn.

There was also an odd adult cartoon from 2014 called Mike Tyson Mysteries that featured a talking pigeon.

You don't know it yet but this rapper is genuinely the best lyricist in the rap game, past or present. He spans a range from silly and lighthearted to dense and philosophical without ever sounding corny. Humor me a bit and check out Crows 1 to a) loosely keep with an avain theme and b) listen to how he plays with words, beats and imagery. To give you a general theme of the song, its about death and graveyards.

@@dshman as a sidenote. With Aesop, never hesitate to pull up the lyrics. There's stuff you won't catch even after multiple listens and having the transcript can really help aid in the journey. Once you listen to enough of his music, it's much easier to understand his slang and unique way of painting visual metaphors.

You can fall down some deep rabbit holes breaking down Aesop lyrics but sometimes it's cool to just take it at face valeu: it's a rap about drawing pigeons. I love videos of people hearing Asop for the first time. Living vicaiousy through people that get the chance to discover Aes with the hope that it starts a 20+ year journey makes me happy.
I would like to suggest wrapping your head around The Impossible Kid. Aesop Rock is not your typical rapper, like Primus is their own genre, Aesop Rock is a different genre.

I've come a long way since this video and discovered a lot more Aesop.
Also, I appreciate your words about taking the song at face value: I try not to get everything "right" in these reactions, I'm mostly going for authenticity and what I feel about them. While I try to figure out what the deeper meaning of the song is at times (like with my most recent reaction) I mostly try to appreciate the song for what it is. Thanks for stopping by!

Check out "Water Tower" off The Impossible Kid. Legitimately beuatiful prose in that song as well, especially the first verse. Aesop is far and away the most prolific rapper alive right now.
