- In a supermarket far far away... Mayo Wars: Hellmann's vs. Duke's. Which is the dark side? Depending on what part of the country you live in you have your favorite. Leave a comment and tell us which mayo you prefer. #inkidreferralcode tomstestkitchen
I used to be a Hellman's fan. It's still a really good mayonnaise to me, but I desired something with more body to it. I went on a quest to find that. When I tried Duke's, I knew I found what I was looking for. It's thicker with more body. A quick look at the ingredients shows why... Where the order of ingredients in Hellman's is oil, water, and egg, the order of ingredients in Duke's is oil, egg, and water. The higher egg content gives it more body.
I enjoy a number of mayonnaises, but when I have a choice, I choose Duke's.
Dukes also does not include sugar and Hellmans does
Riveting! Glad you were able to complete your quest and find the mayo you desired
Dukes also uses only egg yolks, no egg whites, but hellmans uses whole eggs which greatly effects the texture and taste.
I grew up with Hellman’s and thought it was the best. Then I tried Dukes. I threw the Hellman’s away because it wasn’t being used anymore.
One thing barely anyone mentioned is Duke's has NO added sugar. So to those who are diabetic, this is important, and in my opinion, gives Duke's that special flavor I love. Growing up and living in Chicago, all my mom ever had in the house was Miracle Whip. I'll never forget her loving those tomato and Whip sandwiches. I didn't know anything about Hellman's until I was in my 20s and never looked back. Now I think Miracle Whip is gross. Just a few years ago, I found a small jar of Duke's at the local Dollar Tree. NOW, Duke's is my one and only mayo! Tried Blue Plate when I was last in Florida. Meh. Nothing special to me.
I grew up in KY with Miracle Whip. Same with me, moved to NY and discovered Hellmann's. Can't stand Miracle Whip anymore. Duke's is good, it's great for mac or potato salad.
I believe if you buy sugar free otherwise it does have sugar
I grew up with Blue Plate in Baton Rouge and it is still my favorite, but I usually buy Hellmann's nowadays. Dukes does have a slight vinegar taste to it which is pleasant. Great review Tom. I think any of the 3 major brands are better than Miracle Whip. LOL
+T-ROY COOKS That sounds about right Troy, I've just been using Hellmann's for so long but I will try using Duke's for potato salad. I agree, anything is better than Miracle Whip.
I grew up with nothing but Hellmann's in the house(I'm born and raised in NY), but I tried the Duke's a few months ago, and it's damn good.
Same here. Grew up in New Jersey, have lived in Arkansas for 38 years and never tried Dukes. That was stupid. Its awesome.
I grew up with Hellmans and kraft. Once I moved out I tried Dukes and it’s MILES better for a normal sandwich if you’re not using a fat heavy meat. A turkey sandwich with lettuce and tomato is EXCELLENT with dukes.
My wife and I both grew up on Hellman’s but recently we tried the Duke’s and there is definitely a difference and while either one will work fir us we switched to Duke’s.
Duke's Mayonnaise is THE ONLY MAYO allowed in my house. If I move to another state where Duke's is not carried, I'll get some shipped for the sake of the aesthetics of my refrigerator.
I have to admit, Duke's is really good. I think it just depends on what you grew up with.
I'll take Blue Plate anyday over Dukes... as a Southerner and then Hellman's over Dukes.. but I would take Duke's over Kraft.. but I find the new Heinz better than Dukes.. but Blue Plate is the best.. a true Southern Mayo in Blue Plate!
Lamarr Blocker . Same here lamarr when I first went into the military and being from the Carolinas I would have my mom send Duke's and sun drop soda both a staple food in the south.
@David, I live in the Carolinas and give me Blue Plate any day over the crappy Dukes! If not Blue Plate (Real Southern and Deep South Mayo) then give me Hellman's then Heinz, the Dukes (taste like crap) then Kraft (taste like shit!)
It's ok, I just hate Duke's is all.. taste worse than Hellmans but better than Kraft, but worse than JFG is all. sorry.
Used Hellmans for decades. I actually like Dukes
I have bought and used all 3. Hellmanns, Dukes, and Blue Plate, which are all pretty much available everywhere now, if not you can certainly buy them from Amazon. I tend to like them all. One may be a little different in taste, but never in a bad way. I could and do use them all at one point or another.
+Smoky Ribs I agree Rus, I've just had so many people suggest I give Duke's a try. It does have more of a vinegar flavor so I think it would be really good for potato salad.
Who tf has time to order their mayo on Amazon..
I WANT DUKES NOWWWW
I never want Dukes.. it is as bad as Kraft Mayo!
Dukes is as bad as Kraft from a true deep south guy deeper from the Carolinas!
Carolinas aren't deep south lol.
Now that Hellmann's is using bioengineered ingredients, I have unfortunately stopped buying it after decades. I have played around and settled for Kraft, for now, but I was told about Duke's and ordered 3 jars online. I am waiting for delivery to try. Until Hellmann's stops with their bioengineered ingredients, I hope to enjoy Duke's.
I grew up in a broken home where we ate Miracle Whip. My first wife's family ate Helmans and we were together for 13 years. My second wife's family ate Dukes and we've been married for 30 years and still going strong.
Hellmans is only mayo allowed in our home. Most expensive but the absolute best mayo. Oh and they produce there mayo with cage free eggs. Don’t know how that can effect taste but they have something going
⭐️ But next time include saucer mayo, taste similar to Hellman.
Growing up in different parts of Texas, Georgia and Alabama, I’ve tried blue plate, dukes, Hellman’s and miracle whip. Dukes takes the cake for me.
Duke's is definitely richer/thicker than Hellmman's. Just look at your jar. Hellman's always has a ton of mayo left all over the sides of the jar,but the Duke's mayo is so weighty that it will slide down the sides when you leave it in the fridge. You can actually see into the jar the next day.
I agree cutie pie
Tom, thanks for the review, good stuff! Growing up in the South we had mostly Dukes. Today I prefer Hellmann's seams less greasy.
+Scott Galt Yea, Dukes is big in the south.
Duke is my fav, can't think of when I used hellsmanns
the current helmanns is different from waht it used to be. It used to use canola oil, not soybean oil. Dukes uses canola oil also, but definitly not the same amount.
Hey Tom
you tha Man!! u did something I can't do that is eat mayonnaise from a spoon lol. thanks 4 sharing.
+TwoChainzzanaWang Ha ha, notice I didn't eat the whole spoonful just a taste.
I did a taste test on them and I still like Hellman's better. I did a side by side test on Blue Plate, Great Value, Hellman's and Dukes.... Kraft is passable, but it still can't beat Hellman's as far as I'm concerned, All Mayonnaise in the test. Miracle Whip was invented during the war and I really only like it on bologna sandwiches.
Funny, I grew up insisting on Hellmann's. Now in the South I am a Duke's fan. I can't stand Miracle Whip and must therefore apparently avoid Kentucky! Thanks for this piece Tom.
It’s known as “Best Foods”, not “Best”, just as an FYI.
Best Foods for me! Salsa Saturday and........................ Mayo Monday! LOL! Great review Tom.
+Ballistic BBQ Ha ha, I don't think it will be a reoccurring segment. Maybe an occasional condiment comparison. My son suggested Heinz Ketchup vs. Hunts
+Tom's Test Kitchen Heinz and Hunts are both yummy, it just takes forever to get the ketchup out of the Hunts bottle.
Best Foods is Hellman's west of the Mississippi. Both are divisions of the same corporation.
Best Foods is Hellmans
@@jamesashmore614 I realize that, thanks!
I was a 50 year user of Miracle Whip, until about 4 years ago tried Hellman's Mayo and have stayed with it. I found the not so sweet taste of the mayo very desirable. My wife of 53 years still loves her Miracle Whip! Recently I hear a lot about Dukes and as yet have not tried it but thinking about. Also Kraft has a Mayo ???? Really liked your video, thank you. Jim in south Fl.
I finally got to try Dukes which is right up there with Hellmans and Heinz can't go wrong with those three
Grew up in the South eating Duke's. Both are good, but Hellmann's is better, imo.
Is it weird that every time I fix a bologna sandwich with hellmanns mayo I always watch toms mayo episode? Either way hellmanns is the best by far!
Mr. Tom
My Mother made a concoction that we put on our sandwiches. I remember she called it mayonnaise. As I grew up, she started buying Duke's mayo and it was really close to what she had made all those years ago, so therefore I will always pick Duke's over any other.
Almost forgot...we put a little Duke's mayo in our cake mix.
When I was young my mother used miracle whip, she called it mayo. I didn't like it thus I thought all mayo tasted like it so I skipped it when offered. Years later I ended up having Hellmann's and loved it. Heck, you could eat that stuff with a spoon. Just yesterday when I was grocery shopping I saw they were selling Dukes and I added 2 jars to my cart. Since I already have an opened jar of Hellmann's I'll try the Dukes when that is used up.
Same here, it wasn't until I moved to NY that I found there is a difference and Hellmann's was nothing like Miracle whip. Dukes is good but I'm still a Hellmann's fan.
I grew up a Yankee, so it was Hellmann's for me...but then I moved south and found me a girl, and her mom swears by Duke's. It's definitely less sweet than Hellmann's, which I like. Needless to say, I'm a converted Duke's guy.
I am planning on doin the same video shortly. I live in ca. we have best foods.
I have grown to love to cook with Japanese Mayo. But Iv been wanting dukes for many years. My big treat to myself from tax’s:)
I look forward to giving it a go.
And miracle whip is just rancid stuff..
I Live In South Carolina My Mother Started Me Cooking At An Early Age She Always Taught Me To Use Duke's Mayonnaise & I Still Use Duke's Mayonnaise Today Hellmanns Mayonnaise Has A Peculiar Taste To Me & I Don't Care For It.
I am a hellmans fan, but Dukes mayonnaise narrowly beats hellmans. I find that Dukes is more creamy and smooth. I have to order Dukes mayo online, because they don't carry it on the Bronx supermarkets.
I think they both are good . I buy whichever one is on sale 😊but I grew up on best foods (hellmans )💙
Both are good.
As a native New Yorker who now lives in Los Angeles I grew up on Hellmann's/Best Foods. Now an Amazon Fresh I'm able to order Duke's which I really like spray for potato salad and macaroni salad best food is great for deviled eggs also there is a mayonnaise called Kew Pie which I bought on Amazon to make Japanese style egg salad sandwiches. Kew Pie has a malt vinegar underlie and is very rich and creamy. An interesting tidbit in Europe you can buy Hellmann's mayonnaise and in Australia and Japan you can buy Best Foods mayonnaise.
Interesting, thanks. I love Duke's for potato/mac salad, like you said. I love Kewpie too, I get it at a local Asian market, it's great with french fries. I think Kewpie is closest to homemade.
Hellman's has a history going back to the early 1900s. It was on the Titanic as a shipment...Originally from Great Britain shipping to the United States
Actually Mayonnaise is from Spain.
Dan M r/woosh
Hellmans
I’ll have to try Duke’s because I really do enjoy the vinegar kick in Mayo
I do like my miracle whip tho
DUKES IS GREAT!!
Used Duke's for many years, never been disappointed...
HOORAY FOR MAYO!!!!!
I have been wanting to try Duke’s for a long time now. Growing up in the west, it’s always been Best Foods Mayo. I once tried Kraft Mayo and it was nowhere near the same!
Food City had Dukes buy one get one today. Could NOT pass that up :)
Never had Duke's (live in the northeast and haven't travelled further south than DC) but have been curious about it. Will see if I can find it online at a reasonable price. Miracle Whip = 🤢. Tastes like it contains sweet relish, which I despise.
It’s funny how mayonnaise brands seem to have their regional fans. I’ve eaten only Blue Plate growing up.
Blue plate is THE best....BY FAR !
DUKES RULES!!!!
Definitely Hellmann's for egg or tuna salad as well as deviled eggs.
Hellman’s and Best Foods for me for the last 50 years. Finally tied Dukes this week. Dukes is better. I’m a Dukes brand guy now.
I've never tried Duke's but I usually buy Best Foods, so Hellmann's here in California. Sometimes it's labeled as Hellmann's at the discount market I shop at sometimes.
+TosTinMan EasyCooking Yea, those discount shops get stuff from all over the country. I can get Wise Potato chips at Big Lots, it's a NY brand that's not available here in TX.
Hellmanns use to be good like in the 90’s then they did something to the ingredients and it never tasted the same since
NOTHING is the same anymore, and it's all because of the love of money being the root of all evil. I'm disgusted with food manufacturers now days.
Great review. They are very evenly matched products.
I grew up on Blue Plate, but I eventually tried Duke's and I think I prefer it slightly.
And Miracle Whip, no. Just no.
Hello, I'm from Northern California and you're right Miracle Whip is just gross! It is non-redeemable! I am a mayonnaise mamma and I only use Best Foods, which is the same as your Hellmanns. I wonder where that name comes from?
That Dukes you have sitting next to your Best Foods may work in some cole slaw, but why try to fix something that isn't broken? Every time I've ever taken my potato salad to a potluck or picnic my bowl is always the first to go, as well as, my deviled eggs...People ask me what's my secret and I tell them it's the Best Foods, and they don't believe me, saying it can't just be the mayo. Oh well, suit yourself I tell them.
Thanks for posting this video. GOD bless and take care.
+Sandy Louise Hickman-Holliday I agree Hellmanns and Best are the top mayos in my opinion.
I used Hellman’s for a decade. Duke’s is great.
I have both Hellmans and Duke's in my pantry right now. I'm a Hellmans fan. I can tell the difference right off myself and in my opinion, Hellmans is definitely better.
I’ve lived where Duke’s wasnt sold and bought Hellman’s
I LOVE Hellman’s and can eat it by itself and in larger quantities when drunk all over chicken nuggets and burgers and whatnot and less quantity by itself but still is SO good.
Same with Duke’s. Raised in the south on Duke’s and swear by it and can eat it in huge quantities on food but notttttt as much as Hellman’s on its own.
Love them both equally.
raised on Dukes! Makes The Best tomato samaches!
Sandwich* and also fuck tomatoes they suck
@@hippo6billion811 Not nearly as hard as you.
@@Critica1Bi11 ok
I've never had a tomato sandwich before now I am so curious.
I've made countless BLTs though with Duke's. Now I wanna know what a tomato sandwich is all about.
@@amanofculture6172
Thin White bread loads ofDukes Mayo , juicy ripe red tomatoes fresh from the yard. Salt and pepper! And if you desire let it sit a few mins and get really soggy from the juice!! There you have it! Enjoy!!
I like Miracle Whip..... but Dukes is really good!!! I love it! Never had Hellmanns. Thanks for sharing this Tom!
+Cheryl K (CherylsHomeCooking) Thanks Cheryl, everyone has a favorite.
Dukes is the best ever!! I live in New England, I cant get it here. I have friends mail it to me. Can't be without my dukes
One can not properly judge the taste of mayonnaise by putting a spoonful of straight mayonnaise into you mouth.
To properly compare mayonnaise, you must make two identical turkey sandwiches using the two different types of mayonnaise on either one.
I’ve always uses Hellman’s but I’m gonna try Dukes. Thanks!
great review on the two, always used hellmanns in Maryland, recently they have been putting dukes on the shelves here and I buy what ever is cheaper as they taste very similar in taste
+doublejbbq I know Duke's is really popular in Virginia, they do taste very similar but Duke's had more of a vinegar flavor. I'm going to use it in potato salad.
A lot of reviews regarding Hellman's has commented that the parent company Best Foods has changed the ingredients recently. Comments made have indicated everything from the change in taste to the change in consistency. I have used Hellman's recently and found the taste to be no different than what I've been used to in the past. However after 2 weeks after opening a jar and using it regularly for sandwiches, the consistency in texture appeared to break down and it became slightly "runny" towards the bottom of the jar. It was as if the soy oil was in excess and had began to separate from the rest of the ingredients.
Grew up in Louisville, KY. My dad loved Miracle Whip, my mom is from Boston and she was a Hellman's fan. But I've recently moved to North Carolina and I need to try Duke's.
Once you try Duke's you will never go back!
@@Cubby113able tried Dukes - hate vinegar so a huge no for me...
you mentioned something about central texas. my favorite is the heb brand mayo.
hellmans tastes like miracle whip. i swear it tasted different when i was a kid and lots of people say its changed over the years.
I've never tried HEB's brand
i was raised up eating Hellmens and Miracle Whip. I tried Dukes and I will never eat anything but Dukes.
I was raised with all 3, and of course Hellmanns and Dukes are better. But to come to the defense of Miracle Whip it generally billed itself as a "dressing" not mayo. And on rare occasion, because its loaded with sugar, doesn't make for a unique tasting addition. But I do mean rare. Another similar product is "cool whip," which if compared to "real" whipped cream wouldn't stand a chance in most applications.
My wife prefers Hellmans, I prefer Dukes
Great review and taste test Tom...
+Ray Mack's Kitchen and Grill Thanks Ray Mack!
Ever tried Kraft olive oil and cracked pepper mayo? it has a ton of black pepper in it.
Eating spoons of mayo? Barf.
My close (mayo snobs) circle of friends have had this very discussion... (yes, we lead less than exciting lives)... with Dukes always being the most popular. I never have had a refined enough palate to tell the difference. I can't wait to do a blind taste test with them now and verify what I think I always knew.... thanks for the video!
+Dave Wafford Let me know how that turns out, I think I could tell the difference. Duke's had more of a vinegar taste.
I personally like Hellman’s better because I’m not a huge fan of vinegar taste.
Probably the only product where I can tolerate vinegar is Tabasco sauce.
I know brits and aussies even love to tip their fried potato chips in white vinegar but for me... I can’t do it.
Both mayos are good but I’ll stick with the Hellman’s. 😊👍🏻
love duke's but i grew up on blue plate !!
+djboogie504 We have Blue Plate here, I need to try it.
very good
One more thing I wanted to mention is the last couple of years the Mayo seems to be thinner and kind of watery. Ever since the started selling it in a squeeze bottle I believe. Additionally doesn't seem to hold it's shelf life in the refrigerator as previously. Jim in south Fl.
Heinz and Hellmans are the two best and miracle whip is the devil
Duke's all the way! In my house we have to get both because my wife likes Hellmann's.
Aw yea Duke's is made in Greenville, SC, which is home for me.
It's good, I guess I'm just use to the taste of Hellmann's
But Blue Plate is more southern and so much better... SC is more mid south not deep south!
Great review Tom. I grew up on Miracle Whip on sandwiches. Now I can't stand it. Hellmanns is what we have available here and I love it. However, for the first time last week, I found and purchased Dukes. I have yet to try it, but, I have a feeling I'm going to love the vinegar flavor.
And they're both a whole lot better than Kraft! I haven't even tried Duke's, yet I can *still* make that claim.
+SmokeyGoodness Yea Dan, I'm not a big fan of Kraft Mayo, it's a little on the sweet side for me.
Hellmans fuck the rest especially Duke's
hey Tom-Love the product reviews and comparisons!
+John Mansfield Thanks, some people don't. I try to balance things out.
Duke’s by far
Dukes
For me
I buy whatever good brands on sale. I have a preference for Hellmann's best foods.
Love your reviews/taste tests, Tom. Bet you'd like homemade best of all...just beware the GMO canola/soy/corn oils (try olive oil, a relatively bland one). and do add a bit of mustard. Miracle Whip is nasty sweet.
+kath209 Yea, I've made homemade mayo and it is so much better hands down, it's just a lot more work. I agree, Miracle Whip is so darn sweet.
I'm a Hellman's girl.
Have u ever had dukes?
Hellman’s is completely different Than what it was in the 90s.
There are actually grow adults that still use Miracle Whip? Thought only little kids wanted that stuff on their sandwiches.
Duke’s is very rich and buttery, Hellman’s is looser and eggier. I prefer the richness of Duke’s I’d say in dressings or applications calling for it.
Love ❤️ your plants 🪴
Y'all ain't no southern boy. True test mater sandwich on white bread with salt and pepper.god forbid if you make mater sandwich with miracle whip
I just ordered some Dukes on Walmart.com along with some other stuff.. I have been wanting to try it. I grew up on Best Foods mayonnaise in California. When I got married I went to Michigan and they had Hellmans. The jar shape and jar label is exactly the same except the name. At first it confused me, but I called my mother who explained it to me as she was originally from Minnesota and knew they were the same company. I can't wait to try Dukes!
Hellmann's is the best no matter what name it goes by.
Lived in central Kentucky my whole life and 1% of people use MW. 99% Hellmans
The cider vinegar gives the Duke's a bit more tang to it Imo.
There is no sugar in my Hellman's.....
I am from England.
Fun video guys!I like mayo very much, but some jars are not easy to open, I have a stainless steel jar opener named GTAGGEE, which can be easily opened
Dukes.
I never tasted Miracle whip but grew up on Blue Plate.
+Louisiana Cajun Recipes (007bondjb) You wouldn't like Miracle whip at all JB, stick to Blue Plate
Louisiana Cajun Recipes miracle whip is not so good its really sweet like who wants a really sweet dip or sandwich
You're not missing a darn thing sir. I guarantee it! Stick to blue plate or try Hellmans
Out here in Minnesota we use a lot of Kraft, but i ran upstairs to check and low and behold it's Hellman's. I am a mustard guy and hot sauce guy. Good review though Tom
+Chef John Politte (It's Only Food) Thanks, I'm also a mustard and hot sauce guy. I just depends on the sandwich or salad. Mustard for sure on corned beef and mayo on turkey.
definitely
