  • My passing thoughts as the first moult is 9 weeks in, Woody the Harris Hawk is changing in his plumage and attitude.
I bring him out for the last time during moult.
Thanks to Dave Sharpe nature boy channel, he has been very helpful

Looking good pal 👍. Don't think you stressed him that much. Getting hands on is always like that during this time. It's great to see when they switch back on.

He’s going well into his moult I’d just leave him alone keep giving him food not let him get too fat otherwise he will start screaming when you reduce his food to reclaim him and let him get on with it. I’d pick him up August start working on his fitness training and bowing him next to his bath make sure you feed him good amounts of hard bone like rabbit legs so it will grind his beak down and build his muscle in his legs and neck up and it will break his boredom. Love your Gibsons and your Mews setup is very nice better than mine.

@@freebirdofreason1994 Are you putting him on supplements something like nekton or feather-up my Tiercel Peregrine is on supplements with added iodine any avian bird supplement containing iodine is good. I believe it helps with Thyroxine production which can help push the moult on with stubborn birds not that your hawk needs it he’s doing fine. I block and Free loft my Tiercel not letting him get too fat so I can clean his mews as well as block him in the sun which he loves does his feathers a world of good. Atb

@@freebirdofreason1994 Nekton is good you will notice with hawks and Falcons during the moult you let them get over a certain weight they get cranky and moody and not tolerate you so much there is a fine line. I cleaned the shit out of my Falcons mews today and blocked him in the garden with a duck leg with little meat on it he’s a nice weight manageable with barely if any keel bone to be felt. Sunny days I’ll block him outside and also soak him with a mist gun and completely drench him and just sit there with him and read a book and let him put himself back together again. Your hawk is in fine health you’re doing a good job of looking after him. Atb

@@Zombie_Longwinger he is certainly well fed, I was weighing him I know he has settled at a weight now , interesting how you say about to much weight causing your birds to get moody , thanks for the info.👍
Mine will sit out in the rain and he does bath regularly.
      Good luck.

Great update....I'd say it can be hard to deal with considering the great partnership you had pre moult. Any little deviance in any of my pets has my head wrecked. The major thing going in your favour is that his behaviour is completely normal and he'll come back bigger and stronger for his and your second season which I look forward to viewing .

  • @JeremyThePlayer88

Oh no I see what happened here! Woody's been in his mews for way too long! He ended up getting into the habit of just getting food. When you put the mews jesses on and you took him outside, he didn't even want to eat with you around! It's almost like he lost his appetite! The feathers are coming through very nicely. I do see some cracks on the ends of the tail feathers. I'm guessing that's because they are still growing, right?
At some point in the video, you made a comparison to a chick similar to chocolate to us! But chocolate doesn't have empty calories. There's a whopping 220 calories in a 43g bar. That's almost 2 oz of chocolate! A 3.5 oz chicken breast only has 165 calories. So basically it is less than half the calories if the weight of both food items were the same! So next time you are looking for that chocolate bar, you should walk away from your dessert cabinet and reach into your fridge and grab some protein filled meal, such as chicken! Haha! So a hawk is definitely trying to tell me that meat is the "power food"! And Woody needed a lot of that meat to get his new feathers growing beautifully!
Its great to see Woody get curious of all the bird sounds around him! The black bird that you saw at 8:34 looked like a Mynah Bird, which is known to mimic a lot of different bird sounds. The ones that are kept as pets can mimic human speech as well! Their unique calls that they create are similar to the Northern Mockingbirds around here!

Yes his feathers were still growing so looking a bit different, at one point he looked a bit messy but turned out lovely, I learnt alot during the moult, his character changed, but returned once we started training again.
I think Woody likes chick like I like chocolate, I also love chicken, but cooked is best .
      Thanks.

I found this on my notifications today! I noticed Woody wasn't making any noise like he used to. Didn't you say it was like he was calling for food from his mum and dad before? If so, maybe it is more to do with the moult than lack of attention from you. I'll try and remember to give you a call soon. Cheers old mate.

Hello old friend, he is as quiet as a mouse now, he is at his fat weight , not calling can be that , plus as he matures can help.
Once the season starts and I reduce his weight he may start to call, time will tell.
Looking forward to a chat, 👍🍻
