    The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is an open world action role-playing video game developed by Bethesda Game Studios and published by Bethesda Softworks. It is the fifth main installment in The Elder Scrolls series, following The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, and was released worldwide for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on November 11, 2011.
    The game's main story revolves around the player character and their quest to defeat Alduin the World-Eater, a dragon who is prophesied to destroy the world. The videogame is set two hundred years after the events of Oblivion, and takes place in the fictional province of Skyrim. Over the course of the game, the player completes quests and develops the character by improving skills. The game continues the open world tradition of its predecessors by allowing the player to travel anywhere in the game world at any time, and to ignore or postpone the main storyline indefinitely.

    I'm not knocking the Thieves Guild quest line of Skyrim but...
    The whole series to get Thief artifacts, using them to pull off the Ultimate Heist to steal one of the series' namesakes, and finally using it to sort of break a curse on a Daedric artifact to restore the identity of the Gray Fox to his true self a count, also reuniting him with his poor seeming widow of a wife in the process...
    EPIC. It is made of pure EPIC.

      The only problem with the Thieves Guild quest is that you can do the whole thing without getting caught and it still plays hell with the rest of the game. Stealing the Arrow of Extrication pisses off the Mages Guild unless you get lucky, and becoming the Guild Leader gives you a bad reputation and makes it so you can't use the DLC equipment unless you re-do the quest. It doesn't make it any less of a good questline, but it does suck for that.

      Dracovox Not really. One focuses on Purely Thieving, while the other does about 50% Thieving & most of the Thieving is the radiant quests.
      In the Main Quest in Skyrim out of the 12 Main Quest line missions, maybe 3 are Thief Related while the rest are dungeon crawlers, tailing people, rigging a Businessman to fail, Joining a Cult, Returning a Stolen Object & then a Leader Party.
      Now I love the Thieves Guild Quest line but when you think about it, you don’t do that much Thieving in the Main Story. You do it more so in the Radiant/Misc Quest line. The intro & The Golden Estate are (I think) the only real Thief related Main Quests. There’s also the Dwemer Museum that started as a Thief Focused but that gets turned into a Paper Rubbing.

    I've got a pure thief character on one of my Skyrim saves and it seems like most of the thieving comes after the questline. Trying to restore the guild and fill the trophy shelf is pretty fun, even though the last few trophies take far too many radiant quests.
    But I think it's kind of poetic. When you join, Mercer has almost destroyed the guild. Thus forcing you to start from a weird place. But then you get back in Nocturnal's favor! You behave more like the thieves guild should, and you can see the fruits of your labor.

      I've played both Oblivion and Skyrim for hundreds of hours each, thousands in the case of the latter. I got into the series through Oblivion well over ten years ago, played it quite a bit on the 360 and had a ton of fun. The game's atmosphere hooked me immediately, and is mostly responsible for me buying it again on PC so I could go back to experience it again. That said, after many hours of base Skyrim and well over a thousand with dozens to hundreds of mods, I have to say I prefer Skyrim.
      Oblivion by default has a better atmosphere and better Guild questlines for the most part, the Fighters Guild is pretty ass. I like the main story for both but I definitely prefer Skyrim's DLC. My main problem with Oblivion that, funnily enough, also extends to base Skyrim is that the worlds themselves just feel so lifeless and hollow, and just about every game system in both feels the same. The only difference is that Skyrim is entirely responsible for making the modding scene what it is, and as such the quality and quantity of the mods available on Skyrim puts Oblivion to shame. That, combined with how much newer and more polished Skyrim Special Edition is, just makes it a better game in my eyes.

And hey at the end Nocturnal really blesses Oblivion's Thieves Guild as you get a beautiful and awesome three story Thieves Guild HQ that sure beats the stupid dump in Skyrim. I park the Adoring Fan on the first floor and he chats up all the local thieves that come in to visit every night.
      I even put the big easel painting I get as a reward from the sweet art thief in Chorrol Castle there too since I feel she deserves and honorary membership for rewarding me with that when I didn't at her out to the Countess. And why would I ever rat her out anyway. I'm a thief too.

    Oblivion by FAR. The questline is a million times better and forces you to actually ACT like a thief, whereas in Skyrim you just do basically dungeon crawls and a mafia shakedown.
    "The guild frowns on killing?" Sure, Brynjolf, maybe in the side missions. However, you can go full-on Conan and hack s**t up with a great sword in the main questline with no problems. In fact, the game basically takes you down that road.
    Also, while the Nightingales have an interesting lore, I do overall prefer the Gray Fox.

      Not in my experience. Because the Thieves guild is all the way in Riften it's one of the last questlines I'm introduced to. Typically this is the order the game naturally brings you to the questlines.

      Introduced to the civil war at Helgen
      Introduced to College of Winterhold at Riverwood at the earliest
      Introduced to Dark Brotherhood at Riverwood at the earliest
      Introduced to the Companions at Whiterun
      It's not until you *go* to Riften that you get introduced to the Thieves guild. Because I kinda hate Riften I'm usually at like level 20 before I ever go there in the first place or I go there to kill Grelod the Kind in which case I'll be more focused on progressing the DB than the Thieves guild. On that note, once you have the DB armor, you become much better at sneak because those boots completely nullify your sound. You hear a lot about the goings on of the guild and how people are both terrorized, but also how low the guild has actually fallen, being more like thugs than thieves. But only after you have done some thieving (and presumably look shifty enough), a member will actually approach you. in the Guild you then have to actually do radiant jobs to progress. Its a really small and subtle mod, but it really shows the lost opportunities of the Skyrim base game.

    Oblivion: Hear about the Thieves Guild from the locals, find their meeting place, and actually prove your skill as a thief in order to join.
    Skyrim: Hey you, complete and utter stranger, wanna join the Thieves Guild? I mean, you _just_ failed the little test I for some reason gave to you, but hey, you'll make an excellent thief!
    Oblivion's is better in every single way. You actually have to be sneaky and you know, a thief. The quests and the heists are so much more memorable, including stealing an Elder Scroll! And when you finally become the new Gray Fox, it feels like you earned that position after countless hours of hard, memorable work. And people actually respect you.
    Skyrim's ''Thieves'' Guild is absolutely pathetic. You could complete the whole quest line by running around and beating people up with a two handed battleaxe. There's no accomplishment, no memorable quests or heists. Hell, there aren't even any heists anymore, it's just the same repetitive ''Go here and click on this book, or steal this urn'', over and over and over again. And once you actually reach the rank of Guild Master, it honestly feels like you didn't deserve it, and people still treat you like you just stepped into the Guild for the first time.

    • @briandurio6479
      @briandurio6479 5 лет назад +9

      True but you could also look at it like this. The last three centuries in the Elder Scrolls have been bad for everybody. In the wake of a near apocalyptic event the continent and all its factions were left reeling. The damage done to the Dark Brotherhood during the events of Oblivion set in motion the slow decline of the guild until Astrid and her Sanctuary we're the only ones left.... And even they were a shell of their former glory. By cutting ties with the main brotherhood's beliefs they had managed to Stave off their Destruction for a little while but made themselves relatively useless in the process.
      On a similar note the Thieves Guild that we see in Skyrim is definitely not the same Branch as in cyrodiil. I personally like the crime syndicate field of the Skyrim Guild. Yes the Oblivion version was more thiefy the Skyrim version actually felt like functioning gang with its hands and many pockets doing many different types of crime to stay afloat and not just theft.
      And I believe lore wise the reason the college of Winterhold sucks as bad as it does is because magic was largely to blame for the events of the Oblivion crisis. In the wake of the crisis magic became more....taboo I guess would be the right word in many provinces. Especially in Skyrim where the Nords didn't really respect magic to begin with.
      I'm not saying it's right that all these gilts are kind of suckish, I'm just saying that from a in Universe lore perspective I can kind of see why they are the way they are

    • @IAmTheRealBill

      Brian Durio the guilds don’t have to be big and powerful to feel or be something with a sense of progression. Things like dialog still treating you as a random peasant despite being the head of the organization is but one example of how they fell down. As to the OblivIon crisis setting things up for the TG to be lame, I seem to recall it has been a century or so. That is plenty of time for a return to a widespread organization with a semblance of a proper thieves guild.
      Same with mages college.

    Oblivion of course. In Skyrim your just an errand boy/goon in a wanna be mob. In Oblivion you actually feel like a thief, and pull of some heists, plus you don't have to sell your soul to some prince. Plus you get a sweet reward, and for some time a cool set of boots.

    • @greenscheme2040
      @greenscheme2040 Месяц назад +1

      You keep the Boots of Springheel Jak forever. Just have Acrobatics high enough or bring some Acrobatic enchanted rings and NEVER put the Boots on when you jump down. You survive the fall easily.
      And also save the Sanguine quest until after this and your Acrobatics are at 100. Wear the Boots while doing the quest and when you get your gear back later you can no longer wear the Boots but they remain in your inventory weighing 0 like a quest item and the 50 points more of Acrobatics is now added to your base 100 so you now have 150 points in that skill plus you can now wear another pair of boots of your choosing. Having your cake and eating it too.
      Remember Acrobatics is one of 2 skills that actually do level up past 100 for real effects-wise. It is awesome. You can jump while running and pointing downward and it is like skimming over the roads almost as good as levitation.

    There's something I've recently realised about Skyrim's Thieves Guild. I was playing a thief without much health that didn't like to kill, and god was it fun to sneak through the levels with the restrictions of minimal killing and that if I get caught I'll likely die. You can just murder through them haphazardly, sure. But if you sneak through it then it makes the Thieves Guild so much more fun. I will admit though, I like how grandiose the Thieves Guild in Oblivion felt. Sneaking into tombs, finding the guild, stealing an elder scroll itself! So overall, I do prefer Oblivion's Thieves Guild but only for how grandiose it felt. Plus, it's fun to put on the Gray Fox's cowl, have a guard chase you and then take it off before they catch you

    Honestly ESO's Thieves guilds is with mentioning, you do have to level your Thieves guild rank (skill line) with a lot of random jobs and heists (more like Challenge runs), with the Main story being a bit more Investigator Guild then Thieving.
    It did have one advantage over the others, it has a interesting cast that actively matters and takes part in the main quest with the side quests actively exploring their character. In the end their guild just had more personality to it then the other two because the characters had agency in it.

  • @andrewgrasham4604
    @andrewgrasham4604 Год назад +3

    The main reason I love the thieves guild quest in Skyrim so much is it his hands down the best guild quest line in the game. You actually feel like you earn the leadership.
    Companions is just blah blah blah kill some things okay I guess you're the leader now. Mages college is do a bunch of fetch quests okay I guess you're the archmage now. And the brotherhood quest (while is one of my favorites in the game) is basically just the three remaining members being like "well you're the best person to lead us"
    By the time you get leadership of the guild you really feel like you've earned it. Sure you didn't do a lot of thieving in the main quest but you even steal and sneak all the way through the side missions before they eventually give you leadership. Not getting keep the skeleton key is kind of a bummer but by that point in the game I always have more than a hundred lock picks and there's even a perk you could take it just makes it so you only have to carry around one. I also really enjoy the random quests to go around and pick up cool little items, even if you do have to eventually break down and get a guide to finally get the last Red gem

    • @alessiodaniotti264
      @alessiodaniotti264 Год назад +1

      Your comment is a comparison between Thief quest line of Skyrim Vs other Skyrim faction, not a comparison between te same guild in 2 games.
      Skyrim in every single quest line made you from zero to hero a lot quicker than previous TES games, and also in Skyrim one can beat a faction quest line without nearly doing nothing or having high skills in whats the guild is about (you can become archimage without casting more than 2 spells and without knowledge on alchemy and incantation, companion harbringer without being strong in melee combat and having armor or weapons skills, master thief without being able to lockpicking or pickpoketing, and wihtout stealing nothing except for 2-3 items that aren't event locked)
      For the Skyrim thieves guild: you must try the Brynjolf test, but you enter even failing it, then threaten 3 merchant, something that doesn't requires thief skill. The only "thiefy" thing one could use is a bit of sneaking in some points of the 2 quest realted to Maven's competitor, the East Empire Company, and the one inside the dwemer museum, and still sneaking is recomended only for a small portion of those quests (and not even 100% required, since one can finish them with a bloodbath without great consequences on the rewards). The same applies for the 5 special works in the 5 major holds. In the end there is more dungeon crawling and fighting than stealing (the only things one MUST steal are not even locked, but are always only to take from over a table or shelf or similar...). And if one choose to do only the forging number jobs from the miscellaneous thief quests, one can complete all the questline without a single real theft, pickpocket or lockpicking.
      In Oblivion in the thieves quests you must actualy do thief activity, and you can't progress wihtout lockpicking or pickpoketing.
      And in Morrowind to grew in rank you must also fullfill some rogue-class skill requirements.
      In the end the thief quest lines in previous games where really quest lines that requires being a thief (or some closed class charachter), not a generic adventurer

The guards know, the Jarl knows, the businesses and people know, there's just nothing they can do about it because of how much corruption the city faces and the influence the guild has, making it more of a mob organization so it just depends on the vibe you like.

    i love how in morrowind despite being the super powerful "Narevarine" you DON"T actually "become" the narevarine until half way through the main quest your just a random prisoner who is given a chance to join the blades. oblivion, your a random prisoner who the emperor decides to give his trust due to his dragonblood dreams, but you arent considered some super special existence by anyone EXCEPT the emperor until the very end. Skyrim, your a prisoner who in literally like the third quest is elevated to essentially a mortal god by the standards of the normal "mortals". like you're literally the super special dragon man immediately upon the start.... you have to do absolutely NOTHING to earn it. MY whole issue with skyrim is i NEVER feel like I've earned anything because almost all of the factions feel super shallow and you can run through their ENTIRE questline in like and hour at most.
    editing to add: I honestly feel that ALL of skyrims quests just feel shallow and empty... also i greatly dislike radiant quests, it feels too random to me. and in oblivion i LIKED trying to find the stores that had the most loot in it. it was great popping into a bunch of different stores to see which one i could get the biggest haul out of. i was never able to do something like that in skyrim, honestly most of the stores in skyrim had total crap inside of them to steal. you could go to ANY apothecary in ANY city and they would have the same crap to steal.
    edit to edit: also acn anyone answer why stealing the elder scroll in the oblivion theives guild feels one milllion times more satisfying than doing THE EXACT SAME THING in skyrim? like in skyrim it's part of the MAIN quest and it feels incredibly lackluster and WAY to easy to get your hands on.

    I like that Skyrim's "Thieves" Guild is more of a well-rounded criminal gang, which I liked.

    For Elder Scrolls 6 I think they should bring back the skills requirements for ranking up in guilds, which ranks need to make a comeback too btw, which would make radiant quests make SENSE using them to level up your sneak, pickpocket, marksmanship, ect.
    You can keep the stand stone effects to make it easier to learn certain types of skills, but don’t link them to the astral signs.

    If you ask me, the only thing good that came out of skyrim's thieves guild is the Nightingale armor

    My big question is, if Mercer was a Nightingale and he betrayed Nocturnal what happens to his soul when you kill him. Is he punished by Nocturnal and subjected to eternal torment and loneliness as a forsaken Nightingale, or what happens to him? I would love to hear anyone's comments on this and would love to see you make a video about what you think happens to Mercer in death.
