How It All Began For Ronald McNair, the Astronaut!

  • Ronald McNair grew up in Lake City, SC. He grew up to become an astronaut. Tragically, he was on the Challenger mission, which exploded seconds after takeoff on January 28, 1986. This is the actually funny story of how he started his journey, in a time of great racial strife, as told by his brother to StoryCorps. And despite the tragedy, there's a little bit of a happy ending.

They say the ultimate measure of a person is how that person conducts themselves in a crisis.
As is now commonly known, the astronauts of the space shuttle challenger were alive shortly after the explosion.
One reason we know this is, is each crew member had access to a pack that provided about five minutes of breathing air in an emergency. In the remains, it was found some astronauts had activated theirs, indicating they must have been alive long enough after the explosion to do so.
It was found Ron McNair had activated the pack of the pilot in front of him.
In the seconds after the explosion, in the unimaginable chaos and confusion that must have ensued, Ron McNair had the presence of mind, not only to realise they needed to activate their oxygen packs, but that he needed to activate the pilot's as well (the pilot would not have been able to reach his).
Truly an amazing amazing individual, calm, collected and most notably caring to a fellow human being, in the most horrendous and hopeless of emergencies one could find themselves in.
    God speed Ron McNair

Having a brother I can say that I choked up a bit, both with joy and sorrow. I can almost feel his brother's joyful sadness at Ron's departure from the Earth and life itself. To be able to know that your brother's dream was achieved must have been a wonderful feeling. If only Ron could have lived to tell his brother that "I wish you could've been there."
Because having a brother I know that I want him to experience the joy I feel and he wants me to experience his joy. Now excuse my while I go call my brother.

There are little to no crime statistics, because they live in extremely closeted communities, and the death of one has the same impact on the public police system as the death of a homeless man.
