These days, AAA seems to be a label for any title that's underdeveloped, overfunded, unoptimized, and overpriced.

I feel like it has been that way ever since the term was invented. Sure there is a couple AAA games that have actually been fairly good (although even these you could argue have been underdeveloped, unoptimized and overpriced) - but even if we say that if the game is good these don't matter as much, the amount of good AAA released over the span of the last 15 years is like what - 10 games?

It really annoys me that all these problems often get brushed off with "they still happen because players keep buying AAA games". The worst AAA studios have clearly shown that the people they really answer to are shareholders, not consumers. That and they've grown to the point that they'll just fire a few employees as scapegoats.

    • @karhedin
      @karhedin 3 месяца назад +2

"AAA studio" ? "That" dont exist. the AAA rating is about rating "game quality". the error is to think that a game studio that made a AAA game once would keep making AAA games, especially when they fire their devs from time to time because they fail to "control" them.

Another thing that sucks is shareholders. I forget where I heard this story but back in the day when Ford Motor Company started to make serious bank, Henry Ford wanted to take some of the substantial profit re-invest into the business to improve job quality & general worker life quality. The shareholders kicked up a fuss, "If there is profit it should go to us not the people who work to generate the profits. How am I supposed to afford my (5th week of) summer mansion in Bora Bora?" The feds stepped in & said the purpose of a business is to generate profit for shareholders, not to improve quality of poor peoples lives. & that's why I say yeet the rich into a volcano, it would solve 90% of the world's problems & ensure a bountiful harvest.

There is a section where I talked about this in the vod but it was kind of a tangent and I didn't have much knowledge one it really. But that's interesting to know. I had said i wondered if the shareholders have become more and more unreasonable with demands and that there may not be a way to research it since they don't make it public

The problem with what's going on with the AAA scene is that now that it's failing, indie devs and double A's are going to be attacked by Twitter and journalists now cuz they need more clout and control. Just look at what happened with that farming game that mentioned jiggle physics on their characters. They immediately bent the knee and change the physics. Word has it that they were constantly harassed and threatened by these people into changing their game. Whether it's true or not doesn't matter, cuz they just pissed off people that supported them.

But I also don't understand how the indie-developers continue to make money with their games...specifically the live service ones. After making a one-time purchase on buying the game will only last for so long paying all their employees, how do they get the funding to pay for maintaining their live service? (Such as bug-fixing, adding new content, etc)

    • @Rosiebellmoo

A lot of times because they are so small if they do well they make a lot ya know ? Paying 100 vs thousands I figure. And people tend to be more patient when they are open with the public and responsive about bug fixes etc (think of helldivers and log in issues )

@@Rosiebellmoo Yeah, I get that. I'm just wondering how the logistics work out in the long run. Using Helldivers as an example, if no one buys additional products and they rely on the initial purchase profits, eventually they'll start running out. I love Helldivers, it's a lot of fun & would love to see them make more money for being creative and for having made a genuinely fun game. So I was wondering if the company does other services behind what we see to make a more sustainable income.
Also, I've always had an interest in making games, so was wondering how much it would cost and how to make it sustainable.

Looking at the general picture beyond the prejudices about pricing policies and micro transactions as well as the bad practices of the large established studios, the general problem is that the philosophy of video game production in the industry has NOT changed since almost one decade in most of the sections that are not graphics.
The stagnation of the industry's productive practices added to the overfocusing on secondary aspects such as ultra-realistic graphics and high fps vs the expansion of the gaming bubble 2010-2024 causes the production of AAA games that are rushed, poorly optimized and full of ways to quickly recover the investment to launch the next generic title while factoring the profit margin to please investors.
In short, the demand for digital entertainment is actively expanding and industry practices are outdated and focused on quick profits.

I used to be a huge Star Wars fan, and I remember myself saying that the cool thing about star wars games is that - even if the game itself is not that good, if you just put Star Wars on top of it it becomes amazing. However, I have been indifferent to Star Wars as the whole, not even just games, ever since I watched the 7th movie. I left the cinema and decided that I do not care for Disney Star Wars. I have not felt anything other than indifference to anything Star Wars since.

It's called "The Rich Man's Lottery Gamble". Since the executives get to keep their bonuses regardless if a game fails as they just chop the bottom rank employees off, it became a habit for them to gamble bigger and bigger amounts of money in "all-or-nothing" endeavors.
At the same time, ESG-DIE investments act like loan-sharks who whisper to them with sweet words and get them to take larger and larger investment money to get them further indebted to them. Kind of like how addicted gamblers in casinos end up getting their own selves buried in debt just to win all their losses in "all-or-nothing" bets.
So these executives keep making decisions to continue gambling more with that hope they can hit the jackpot and land crazy profits and have the unattainable "infinite growth". Meanwhile, with the larger and larger budget they hire more and more people to justify the amount of money dropped into the next game, but just end up laying off the average employees anyways once the bet turns out to be a loss.

*Rockstar has pretty much laid out the formula for success at this point. create a bunch of different titles and then focus on the main successful IP's and nothing else. that's not a fan friendly strategy but it does save money And you can still incorporate different aspects of defunct IP's into your popular franchise. for example, instead of making another Midnight Club game, put street racing clubs on GTA6 👍 instead of making Bully 2, put a functioning college in GTA6 👌 if Bethesda, Ubisoft and EA skimmed down and focused on 5 or less franchises, they would make MUCH better games.*

I feel creativity and quality died when the industry discovered the winning formula on how to make a game successful with as little effort as possible. Now it's all about copying the same formulas of other successful games, like Hero Shooters or Battle Royales. Now it's all about overpriced DLC released literally just days after a games launch (Or even sometimes Day 1 DLC) with features that could of easily been in the base game. Live Service models, "Free to Play" games with predatory microtransactions with lootbox gambling mechanics. Once they realized they no longer needed to make engaging stories and gameplay the industry just nosedived hard.
I remember when big companies took risks making experimental games for the sake of trying something new. There's a lot of big companies that have made games back then that are usually overlooked. That time period where these companies tried to do different things feels like it's just completely gone now. It's usually Indie Games that end up trying to push new ideas. I suppose since it's not completely about profits and appealing to their stockholders it does give most Indies the luxury of no deadlines or back-seating from higher ups.
Games really did live or die based on their quality back then. Now games can technically be successful as long as they rope in people with gambling addictions and exploit people with Pay 2 Win mechanics that let them feel superior to other players. It's just shameful

imo, dlc should be an expansion to something already complete. You can make a base game that leaves missing stuff to the imagination, but only if you plan to fill those empty plot-holes in the dlc, and if done right, it can work very well. This is why I'd argue the Elden Ring dlc did lack in the story department; we got left hanging on some parts we wanted to know. We all wanted to meet the Gloam Eyed Queen.

Can't check Sunrider 4: The Captains Return due to the lack of a jukebox. Speaking of, those games are also pretty decent but are adult games.

Its on a copyright free music list in yt. So if a game used it..it came from yt first ^^

@@Rosiebellmoo Okay, then I just have to try to figure out which game I heard it in. It probably was Sunrider 4 as it uses entirely copyright free music.

you know modern gaming is bad when it is worse than the mmo boom of generic copy paste mmo's everywhere. like decade or two ago.

the problem with AAA is they got nice and comfortable suckling te teat of ESG venture capital.
as long as they bend to the will of their DEI masters, the investors would keep shelling out big bucks.
    wellll...
Now they've overhired, underperformed, and the venture capital isn't rolling in.
    and in come the layoffs.

    OBLIGATORY ROCK AND STONE!
and DRG is a fantastic game. Playing alone is fine, but the community tends to be REMARKABLY friendly. We are all united against the bugs.
That being said, if you're an insectophobe it will be hell.
As for AAA gaming having their original soul... no, they don't. It's a result of promotion patterns as well. The artists and visionaries that made the fantastic games eventually lose power to the bean counters and monetization experts, often right after investors get involved in the company.
Investment capitalism itself seems to be a huge part of what's wrong in general with the world. Studios shouldn't be getting investor backing and chained to huge dev teams and profit requirements.
We should normalize kickstarters. At least with them a studio can offer rewards for backing and individuals can decide if they like what's on offer.

Honestly they're not. Because this is all opinion based. Some people will say they are and others don't. On top of that the term AAA game didn't exist until around 2010. Before that all we had was games.

They are though. There's more monetization and many games that end up being incomplete or scams now
It's not that the good ones aren't as good as the old ones were. But there's so many unfinished things and Battlepasses etc that weren't there before

An entire 35 minute video explained why Triple AAA games can fail, being controlled through layers of red tape and shareholders, whereas Indie and Double AA companies have a lot more freedom and room for creativity where individuals often have a voice in the project.
