      before the recession i knew a few government workers who didn't do anything 40 hours a week. my aunt worked with a guy who had his department downsized and merged with another department and due to an oversight he was left as the manager and sole member of a team that no longer existed. So he just came to work and goofed off on his computer all day since he didn't technically have a boss. This went on for a couple years and was only noticed following the recession when they started doing budget cuts.

      My father was a "quality assurance specialist" for the US Army. Which meant it was his job to tell other people how to do their own damn job, because most of them had no idea. Including the engineers. One time he was supposed to check out the Bradley fighting vehicle. He was told not to turn anything on because it didn't actually work. So of course, he started it and guess what, it didn't work. It did set off a lot of alarms though, and my dad got chewed out by his boss, who was also incompetent. His last 5 or so years there he just sat in his office all day with nothing to do.

    It's not as good as the original, but that's kind of hard to pull of. If you don't explain anything, you just have the first one all over. If you explain anything at all, you already said to much, because the mystery is what made it work.
    I still really enjoyed the atmosphere in this movie.
    Many things do actually make more sense than you give them credit for.
    So, we have a somewhat religious regime, that throws people in the cube. They not only test stuff like the bacteria. When that one guy reaches the exit they ask him if he believes in god. So I would guess that it''s also a psychological experiment, like if people will gain/loose faith when they face terrible things. ( also probably things like how they handle certain situations, group dynamics etc., of course they KNOW what happens if you set someone on fire, but how that affects other people, the group, how they figure out ways around traps, those are things that they could still learn from it.)
    The two guys "observing" the cube are also part of an experiment. pretty much all they do is look at the people in the cube and then in the end, if they do get out, they ultimately decide their fate, by pressing a single button. They are technically allowed to read the files, but they are told not to, told not to go down but able to do so, etc. Someone is observing how they behave in that situation, You got Dod who does what he's told and doesn't give a shit and the other dude who doesn't really want to do it but still does it (at least until the events in the movie).

    • @widen698
      @widen698 3 года назад +3

      There could've been growth from the first film. I don't think they ever intended to have sequels so it's not easy to build from but there are elements that could be expounded on.
      In my eyes a great sequel to Cube would have been close to the same thing, at least in presentation. Except it'd be darker than Cube, there are a handful of people. Maybe a there's a skittish guy who doesn't want to be around a group, maybe some better camaraderie between everyone so we don't simply rehash Quentin for a fourth time. This tighter bond seems to get them through rooms. This time nobody knows much of anything, and are essentially relying on basic logical thinking to progress. Maybe they're even able to suss out one or two trapped rooms because there's already blood or a body in the corner of the room.
      But time goes on. The process is slow. They stumble on strange rooms, ones that are one of a kind. Maybe they happen to find a moving room and one or two people get left behind as they're trying to get on, and these two decide to simply wait for the room to come back for a few hours, eventually they'd probably decide to move on and try to find another way.
      The group is beginning to get thirsty now, and hungry.
      It'd be a very dark version but the dehydration, starvation, unintentional group separation and potential corpse discovery are just too fascinating to me, alongside a non-dysfunctional group that isn't at each other's throats. Just an experiment to see how far people could wander in an impossibly complex maze before they expire.
      It might be a very boring movie.

    See. I enjoyed the ending to Cube Zero ALOT when I first watched it, cuz Wynn being Kazan was one I thought was probably one of my favourite plot twists ever. And it would have been kinda poetic, he helped get one person out sacrificing himself, but then he eventually would be the only one from Cube 1 to escape. But no it’s just “oh yea. This guy is clueless. The way Cube zero answered the mysteries of the cube was perfect - it didnt answer jack shit. The idea was that no matter how much you learn about the cube, youll just end up with more questions. You just cant see the big picture in a system this vast. The observers were a part of the experiment. They were in their own cube in a way. The gestapo villain was just another victim of the cube too. Do you believe he's free? Of course hes not. You'll just go up the hierchy until you realize that its out of control, just like Worth said. And it was brilliant. It felt like they ruined the mystery, but they actually expanded it.
      Why have an elevator that goes down to the cube? They were a part of the experiment. They were most likely hopling that someone will try to do it. Who would do that anyways? Would you go down to the cube if you had access to it? Also other people were using that elevator.
      Dod was not a bad guy. He was the the typical subordinate who follows orders. Lots of people do this, because people trust authority and know the price of disobedience. And he should know more than anyone else. German solders now have the right to disobey their superiours, because i guess "I just followed orders" was not good enough for society. This is an actual issue that goes on in our world.
      All the other shit this guy said was crap too. I cant believe that most people agree with him

      @@ulrikahaggard9923 I dont think it does. I still think that the workings of the cube are mysterious enough for me to fear its vastness. I know we saw a bit of what happens behing the scenes, but they were just more victims of the system. To me this only expands the horror.
      Also I believe that the original cube stands on its own. Nothing can ruin it for me, because I dont really see these films as cannon. I see them as fan films. And fan films can be fun.
      I personally enjoyed the acting. The style of the movie is more over the top and silly. Like a comic book. I get why that can make the whole thing look stupid in comparison, but I simply let it be what it is.
      Granted the romanse wasnt great, but it doesnt ruin the movie for me. It was barely expressed even. He never even shared his emotions with her and she was kicking hiss ass for the most part. Its as if he knew it was silly that he had a crush on her and went after her. Well it wasnt the only reason. He just hated everything about this situation

    Actually, there is a good reason for why they are given the files but "not encouraged to look at them", aswell as making it easy to sabotage and enter the cube via the elevator :
    Jax, at one point, i think it's in the end, says something about "observing the observers", aka not only is the Cube being monitored as an experiment about human behavior, but also the observers (Dodd and Wynn) are being observed in an experiment to examine human behavior. And how to best observe human behavior? By giving them all options, including treason and sabotage. That also explains Dodds "asshole"-behavior : He knows what they are doing is wrong, he knows that bad things are happening, but he also knows that everything they do is monitored and he fears the consequences of bad behavior. Think about soldiers doing horrible stuff because "they have to follow orders, or else they get shot for treason".
    About Jax and his two men appearing so quickly : I don't think that's unrealistic. Considering Dodd and Wynn are constantly being monitored and that this seems to be a somewhat military-like organization having security people appear at the scene in a matter of minutes is quite realistic.
    The only thing i despised about this movie is when that soldier guy becomes that stupid "jumping 10 meters in the air"-supersoldier, that is far too cliché and out of place. Heck, i think this movie could've been great without any villain inside the cube, just have Jax trying to kill them, that'd be enough. And maybe that dream-reading feature isn't that good either. But otherwise i highly enjoyed thius movie.
    But i agree, Jax is an awesome character.

      The only problem is they had to spend time on the cube stuff so you ended up having to think that COULD be it but with no real proof of it, further suggesting maybe that was the idea, people watching people who were also being watched, then the execs said "ye that sounds like cube, make it cube and we'll do it" so they had to cut half of their film to put in the cube stuff.

  • @DesertRainReads

    I actually liked Cube Zero. The aesthetic of the cube itself gave it a proper, more industrial and primitive look compared to the original's well-lit, futuristic, minimalistic feel.
    Also, the idea of having an outside look at a cube actually worked. Is it better than the original? No, definitely not, but it does have its charm. The dialogue is cheesy but the booby traps are excellent.
    Better than Hypercube by a nautical mile, mainly because of the way it looks and feels. Similar to, but again, more primitive looking in comparison which makes sense.
    I would welcome a remake of this one. Only to see the issues it has fixed, but keep the great looking aesthetics of the cube itself in tact.

    I thought Cube Zero was supposed to be some kind of religious metaphor type of deal. My guess was that the cube was some sort of purgatory or hell that they were supposed to escape from as a representation of finding salvation or perhaps a trial by ordeal. When they do escape they're asked whether or not they believe in God even after being put through said ordeal as some test of faith or maybe a show of repentance or acceptance. Maybe it has something to do with accepting Christ into one's heart or something similar in nature. I assume it's inspired by Christian or Catholic theology if it is indeed a religious metaphor.
    Then the control room is perhaps a different circle of hell, or maybe the cube itself isn't even important and it's really just the people in the control room that are being tested. Jax (if that's even how it's spelled) and his guys I figured are either angels or demons.
    Or, maybe I'm giving somebody too much credit and it was never even meant to be that deep. It could easily be as shallow as some producer trying to cash in on the success of the original one last time.

    If you rant about the logic of the traps, you should also include the unlikelihood of having such a huge complex with seamlessly connected moving cubes underground, that are somehow all electronically connected to a hub, while still moving.
    Also, the Freezing-Trap is illogical, because nothing freezes in an instant. You could be in any medium at absolute zero degrees (-272) and still need a "lot" of time to freeze completely. The experiment with the frozen rose takes about 10 seconds to get it to a state, where it can be shattered. A shoe would probably take a minute or two, so they could cover them in clothes of the deceased and take a run without getting more than a little burn because the dry ice isn't covering them.

    I have just finished watching the Trilogy and I do agree with you that the 2nd part of the movie was unnecessary @ all!!!
    And Now the question goes with this - Is Kazan alive after all ? Or he got killed like the 2nd movie at the end!
    & I do also agree with you that wynn's character got changed into a familiar character which is Kazan!
    So basically Wynn got the same mental issue similar with Kazan and I am against it honestly because Kazan's mental issue should be with him and not another character having the same mental issue unless if they were the same person!
    But really what did happen with Kazan after he escaped?!
    - Thank you for the great review!!! Because honestly I needed some explanation and yours was good one so thank you!!!!

    • @deusdeaconReviews
      @deusdeaconReviews  8 лет назад +2

      Well personally I consider the original cube and its sequels separate entities, We weren't shown what happened to kazan because we weren't supposed to see it that information was deliberately kept from the audience for a reason, your best guess is the answer cause anything less is disappointing, So to me it stayed that way regardless of sequels.

    I completely disagree.
They were most likely expected to try it. Who would do that anyways? Would you go down to the cube if you had access to it? Also other people were using that elevator. There can be a ton of explanations. Its not a plot hole just because you want it to be.
    Dod was not a bad guy. He was the the typical subordinate who follows orders. Lots of people do this, because people trust authority and know the price of disobedience. And he should know more than anyone else. He was just scared for his life. Its fucked up? Sure it is. Thats the point. German solders now have the right to disobey their superiours, because "I just followed orders" was not good enough for society. This is an actual issue that goes on in our world.
    All the other shit this guy said was crap too. I cant believe that most people agree with him.
    Nothing can live up to the original cube, but these movies are very welcome in my book, even though they do have many flaws. The original movie is always going to be there and nothing can ruin it. Most people understand that it stands on its own and all this other shit is just some extra fun. I want more cube movies. My hearth has a cube shaped hole and I will take anything

    • @bladabladabloo
      @bladabladabloo 6 лет назад +3

      Rodislav Canev Yeah, he even tried to say that the letters being burned off was a "Plot Hole" even though they clearly only burned off the letters for the six exit cubes for that specific cube. Only those six rooms had the letters melted off, and every other room still had letters on it.

    Might be a little late to the party but here are my 2 cents. I like Cube and Cube Zero the most. Hypercube is pointless I was searching for a deeper meaning but there isn't any in Hypercube. The original Cube is very interesting but not developed enough. Cube Zero I liked because of the nice positive twist at the end and her escape and Wynn's twists with the signature and the auxilary exit. Wynn and Dodd's characters make sense for me because the powers behind the curtain are also using them as test bunnies not really as their employees. It's just a second game into a game. I think the major problem with all the Cube movies is that the premise is so fucking good that it draws the interest of the viewers but the writers are weak and can't really manage to live up to the great premise and tell a good story on it.

    If “Cube Zero” is a prequel to the original “Cube”, then the original “Cube” is rendered almost pointless since we have no idea how Kazan would have answered the “Do you believe in God?” question. You could also argue that it has been rendered pointless.

  • @bleack8701

    The use of letters could be to show a more basic system before they developped the coordinate system and coding for traps with the factors. Also them changing that around prevents the audience from knowing ahead of time what rooms characters are going into while the characters have no clue what's going on. It's a rather unique problem for a movie like this.
    I also think it's good that tjere's always someone above the others. It manages to preserve some of the mistory of the Cube

    • @deusdeaconReviews
      @deusdeaconReviews  2 года назад

      I would argue that's not a mystery though, that's a hierarchy, which is easy to explain hierarchy is ordered, hierarchy makes sense, wouldn't the mystery be better if there were no higher-ups, then you have to think, does this cube have a purpose are they there for a reason or is it all just a fucked Milgram experiment?
