I remember the first time seeing this film and let me tell you, I couldn’t make up my mind all throughout the film. One minute it looked like the dad was right and the next it looked like he was psychotic. Paxton was an amazing actor and he is dearly missed.

I remember watching this movie about 18 years ago on HBO in college. I was absolutely floored at how good it was, and it proved to me how good of an actor McCaughnahey is. I never realized, really, that Paxton directed it.

I was obsessed with this movie for a while in high school. I loved listening to Paxton's and the writer's commentary and hearing how much thought went into stuff.
Bill Paxton was one of those amazing actors who could play a scumbag car dealer, a sadistic vampire, an axe murderer, etc and still come off likeable/sympathetic.

A truly underappreciated gem of a movie. Solidly directed and good performances from Paxton and Matthew McConaughey. Not to mention a great twist in the end. Wish more people knew/talked about it.

I had an axe just like that one and I used it for cutting trees and chopping wood. The axe is also resting in a chopping block. I always assumed (and still do) that Otis was the name of the owner, and "Dad" just stole it.

It's weird seeing this and knowing Spy Kids 2 came RIGHT after it, and had both Bill Paxton and the actor who played young Fenton. And then the kid who plays Adam is the live-action Peter Pan from 2003.

Great job explaining the film, especially the ending which i always thought they intended as you say, but in the late 90’s/early zeds everything was so god damn twisty turny this just fell into the fray. Always such a rare and pleasant treat to find someone who discusses this little gem of a film in detail, and raises more awareness for it. Dad sat me down to watch this with him for the central themes of faith and family. The plot caught his attention largely because of his background in theology -- the same reason I shared films like "Constantine" with him -- and we both agreed that the way the killings are never represented as anything truly righteous or justified was an element that really made this movie striking. Indeed, bravo Bill Paxton. May he and dad both enjoy a good in depth discussion or two in the great beyond. And as always, thank you Deausdeacon for another inimitable review for a personal favorite flick.

This film reminds me of, both in themes and in the emotions it draws, the biblical story of God telling Abraham to kill his son. McConaughey doing a type of sequel, raising up the next generation of "demon slayer", would be a MUCH welcome film to all of us who are old enough to have seen this one upon it's release!
