    If I was ever given the chance to make a movie (or miniseries) about the Jack the Ripper murders, I'd make it as faithful to the real thing as possible, even down to how dark nighttime was in 1888 Whitechapel. And since there isn't any accurate portrait of what Jack looked like (only through eyewitness accounts), I would shoot it in a way where he would not be shown onscreen, only in shadows/out-of-frame/offscreen, so as to keep his appearance and clothing unknown.

    Now now... you THINK the coroner is retching at the corpse, but actually it's because they thought maybe they had mixed up an organ taken from a corpse with their lunch and cooked it and seeing the corpse brought back memories of it, and being told the corpse was missing an organ confirmed they had eaten it.
    So it all makes perfect sense.

    And once again we have a Jack the Ripper film where the prostitutes wear clean, pretty, and very sexy clothes. Which the real Ripper victims most definitely did not own. Just once I'd like to see a realistic portrayal of those poor women and their lives.
    And yeah, I know it's *cough* "based on" *cough* Moore's graphic novel which is itself a sensationalized, embellished version of the real-life events. But still. If they made grapes a clue when there really was some grape stems found with one of the bodies, they could've gotten other things more accurate.

    Based on your review, the much earlier Sherlock Holmes movie :Death by Decree" which starred Christopher Plummer as the famous fictional detective seems to have treated the subject with greater respect and accuracy. BTW, I'm sort of surprised that you have not thought to review the earlier movie. It was very good even by modern standards. In many ways - in my opinion - it was much better than either of the Robert Downey Jr. versions of Sherlock Holmes.

    I have watched this before, but had to come back and give you a book recommendation. Patricia Cornwell puts forth her evidence towards Walter Sickert as the Ripper in her book Portrait of a Killer. On her own dime she has taken DNA samples from Ripper letters and also taken samples of post marks and embossed letter paper of the time, and much more. It is a very interesting read, and caused me to search for Sickert's artwork to see for myself what she states.

    • @deusdeaconReviews
      @deusdeaconReviews  6 лет назад +1

      I'm familiar with it, and her book has been criticised heavily for (and i am paraphrasing here) "making shit up" also did she say which ripper letters she took the DNA evidence from cause the 3 canonical letters the only letters considered to be from jack himself, dear boss, saucy jack and from hell have been missing for decades if not a century so unless she took the evidence from a letter NOT deemed canonical making the DNA irrelevant or she's somehow gotten hold of incredibly valuable and previously thought to be destroyed evidence.
      to quote a review of Patricia Cornwells work
      "a fundamentally dishonest book, one that uses medical jargon and mitochondrial DNA analysis to confuse the audience and obscure the fact that its conclusions are flawed. Cornwell assumes her readers are fools, unable to properly evaluate scientific evidence. We’re not. Walter Sickert deserves better. So do we"

    • @ravenswartwood5398
      @ravenswartwood5398 6 лет назад

      @@deusdeaconReviews She does say that it is a letter that is not considered canonical. Also that mitochondrial DNA doesn't prove whether it is in fact a single person, and even if it did it would only prove he wrote the letter. I enjoyed the book, and it gave many enlightening details about life back then. Not just for the poor of that area but how police walked their beat and what the average lifestyle was back then, along with what technology and tools were available. I wasn't convinced of Sickert's guilt. You mentioned in the review you believe George Chapman is the Ripper, I remember the name, but might be confused with who he is exactly. Was he who Mary Kelly was in an "on again off again" relationship with? Believed to have killed them as a warning or a scare tactic to get Mary off the streets and then murdered her in a fit of rage when she didn't? I would also recommend John Douglas' The Cases that Haunt Us.

    • @deusdeaconReviews
      @deusdeaconReviews  6 лет назад

      I think you might be mistaking chapman for someone else possibly but I'll just outline the reasons why I believe George Chapman birth name Seweryn Antonowicz Kłosowski was the ripper, the murders took place around the same time he arrived in london, they stopped after he left for america, he was the apprentice of a senior surgeon also enrolled in a practical surgery course and serving as a nurse and and doctors assistant in Warsaw, his description matched a man seen with mary kelly (nothing about relationship stuff though), he was a violent misogynist, of which chapman was arrested for at some point his wife said to have seen him leaving home frequently late at night and fredrick abberline told the arresting officer "You've got Jack the Ripper at last!" and finally he was a serial killer of women and the only reason he's not taken more seriously as s suspect is because his MO changed to poison, but thats not completely unheard of for a serial killer to do especially after a big change like chapman had moving from britain to America.
      Oh and he lived mere steps away from where Martha tabram was found murdered.

  • @KiramidHead

    12:20, I read, somewhere, that the inclusion of Merrick (Elephant Man) was to highlight the contrast of Merrick, a good, kind soul in a horrifically disfigured body, and The Ripper as a horrific, evil soul in a normal looking man's body. People were disgusted and scared of Merrick's appearance (though he was completely harmless), but wouldn't be alarmed by the Ripper's appearance (though he was incredibly dangerous). Not too sure if that was actually the film's intent, but I do like the symbolism.

    • @deusdeaconReviews
      @deusdeaconReviews  6 месяцев назад

      I mean if that was intended it was not exactly highlighted very well, cause the real Joseph Merrick was quite well spoken although by the time he was in London, his health was severely diminished, if they really wanted to contrast him with the ripper they should've had him do something other then just stand there, spoken to him at least to highlight his soft nature, so yeah if that was the intention, id say they failed to illustrate that in my opinion.

    Hey what do you think of the Lechemere/Cross theory? Love to hear why you favour the Chapman theory? Or the theory there was no Ripper at all, just a Boogeyman cobbled from the horrors of life in Whitechapel? Great drubbing of a truly shite movie btw, my sincere compliments...

    • @deusdeaconReviews
      @deusdeaconReviews  2 года назад +2

      well first I really don't think the murders were unrelated and there was no ripper, there's far too much correlating evidence for that as for lechemere, the only real suspicious thing about him was that he gave a false name which as a resident in a really dodgy part of victorian London, its understandable he'd want little to do with the police, yes he was found at one of the murders but he lived and worked in London, so circumstantial at best, I couldn't find anything saying he had surgical/anatomical knowledge which is the big one for me against the theory frankly, this reply is long so ill be brief about chapman, he was a known misogynist, had surgical/anatomical knowledge, kept jars on woman's organs namely the uterus, Murdered several women yes the the MO was different but its not unheard of for serial killers to do that, lived very close to Martha tabrams murder which I consider the first Jack the Ripper murder, arrived in London at the time of the first murder and left around same time they stopped and also Frederick Abberline thought he was jack which when we was arrested said "You've got Jack the Ripper at last!" which you have to admit is a bit more then circumstantial.

      @@deusdeaconReviews Long replies from you are a TREAT, so feel free to write War and Peace if it please, sir! At the risk of displaying my ignorance, was Chapman related to Annie Chapman or in name only? As to Lechemere, I find him compelling because he had a butcher's cart and a reason to be covered in blood. And a butcher's anatomical knowledge is nothing to scoff at, even if I'd be hesitant to let one cut me open...And didn't Francis Tumbltey the American quack also keep "cervical matrices" in jars to regale young men with the horrors of sex with women? Much more sanitary to have sex with HIM apparently ...

      If you have Netflix, all four series are on. I’d certainly recommend the first and third, not sure about the other two (you could skip the second series and the fourth, and not lose anything, as they deal with different copycats).

    • @deusdeaconReviews
      @deusdeaconReviews  5 лет назад +1

      okay if facts don't matter why base it on jack the ripper at all ? why not make up a completely new case ? instead the film like to have its cake and eat too by cherry picking information, also its established from the start that 300 is a fictionalised retelling of the events from a skilled story teller to inspire people.

    • @grapeshot
      @grapeshot 5 лет назад +1

      @@deusdeaconReviews No 300 to me is more like you know we have to glorify white boys.And brag about Western Civilization which is nothing more than code for white supremacy. Or is it called Judeo- Christian values. The frankly From Hell is just a movie nothing more. I never understood what was the fascination about Jack the Ripper anyway since there were serial killers who killed far more and got away with it.

    • @deusdeaconReviews
      @deusdeaconReviews  6 лет назад

      theres hundreds of different theories about everything concerning the ripper case so its more then possible someone somewhere has put forth that one, the current most popular consensus though is that the from hell, dear boss and saucy jacky letters are genuine.

    • @SarahJaneOmega
      @SarahJaneOmega 6 лет назад

      I thought that the Dear Boss letter (and possibly the Saucy Jacky postcard as well) were thought to be fake, and the From Hell letter was the only one thought to be genuine, as it wasn't sent to a newspaper, but to an individual, George Lusk.

    • @deusdeaconReviews
      @deusdeaconReviews  6 лет назад

      again hundreds of theories so it wouldn't surprise if someone has thought that but for a variety of reasons those three letters are thought to be genuine mainly because they stipulated details that were not available to the public and hadn't been released to the press, saucy jacky mentioned the double event for example.

      Deusdaecon Reviews I agree but this movie was made to be a box office success and did some typical Hollywood moves for the sake of making the movie more consumable. I think a smaller British production with great actors should try to make a more historical adaptation if not of Allan Moore's graphic novel from another theory that can be proven ;).

    • @deusdeaconReviews

      Yes fair enough, But lets be honest putting our hands on our hips and saying "oh hollywood is just being Hollywood" doesnt really excuse it lack of historical accuracy and accuracy as adaption either from criticism.

    What makes you think Chapman was Jack the Ripper I am curious Deus?

    • @deusdeaconReviews
      @deusdeaconReviews  8 лет назад +4

      +michaelkeha In my opinion George Chapman was the Ripper, Firstly because he had anatomical knowledge due to him being apprenticed at age 14 to a senior surgeon, studied practical surgery in Warsaw and was a male nurse, secondly he was violent with a big misogynistic streak attacking and threatening his wife at the time of the Ripper murders, Murders which stopped immediately after he left for the US, Where he engaged in his own serial killings of poisoning his mistresses, Many say because he changed to poisoning and didn't continue with the ripper style, Is why he's not jack but modus operandi can change and what didn't change was his need to kill women, and lastly even Frederick Abberline thought chapman was the ripper, telling sergeant George Godley "You've got Jack the Ripper at last!" when he arrested chapman.

    • @michaelkeha
      @michaelkeha 8 лет назад

      deusdeacon Interesting and I would say it's less of a change an mo and more an evolution for his first kills he was messy and violent and now he is destorys their bodies from the inside without leaving a mess behind to clean up.

      Well, I hope you do sometime, especially after seeing the upcoming AC film, which I think will be the best video game adaptation we have had yet, especially since Ubisoft is producing the film and had a significant hand in the script.,Also, it's sad that in this film, we know that Johnny Depp has done far better with Mid-Atlantic and English accents in portraying Ichabod Crane, Jack Sparrow, Victor Van Dort, Sweeney Todd, and even the Mad Hatter. This...I don't know what to make of this.

    A friendly bit of criticism, I think you’d get a lot more views (that would lead to more subscribers) if you cut the song from your intro. It’s kind of long and it’s a very niche music genre that most people not only don’t enjoy, but actively hate. So people who would otherwise love your channel never make it to the content that they’d enjoy. They click away during the song.
    People have short attention spans and make snap judgments. You’re dooming yourself before you even start.
    You have really solid, entertaining content. I think you’d find a spike in popularity if you cut the song.
