I think Price is an excellent character and surprisingly well written. The actions that you mention to be strange, I think are the ones that make him interesting. Like him wanting to save his wife after just trying to kill her. Price seems to be a man who lives for fun and games. Even his failing marriage is a competition to him. But he still cares for people, including his wife.
This one is an old guilty pleasure of mine. For all its faults, I find it to be a genuinely entertaining flick. It’s one I love to pull out and share with friends.
a couple things. the reason pryce and wife hate each other is she was cheating on him and has tried to kill him multiple times cause shes nuts and a gold digger. also the cellphone thing isnt that far fetched in 1999 you would lose signal if you sneezed let alone went to a fortress in the middle of nowhere
Up until the reveal that she was cheating on him, I felt their hate was less real and more playful. Which is why he seemed so upset when she appeared to die and why he was trying to save her from the shadow thing. I think even despite the cheating, on his part anyway, a lot of it was just talk, like they were sick and twisted and it was a weird kind of foreplay. On her part, the wanting him dead seemed to be real though. Perhaps he was only upset becasue she didn't die by his hand.
The statue of the corpse is made from an actual corpse. It was made by Dr. Honoré Fragonard in the 19th century and there is a medical oddities museum in France that holds his collection.
Pritchard was actually my favorite character in this movie. By the way, it's not strange that Price would be concerned for Evelyn after knocking her through that door. He obviously realized that was a dangerous room and decided that whether he wanted Evelyn dead or not, nobody should go in that room at all. It's one of those situations where you realize that personal motives take a back seat to survival. You can practically see Price's mind shift gears as he sees the room and understands what is in there.
I agree - Jeffery Combs was worth soooo much more screen time given his amazing tv and movie career. He is such a diverse character. I totally loved Pritchard's sarcastic and pessimistic attitude - he was a hilarious contrast to the traditional characters in a horror movie.
Ah, good old Chekov's pencil. If we are shown a pencil being sharpened, the pencil MUST be used to kill someone, preferably the person who arrogantly sharpened the very tool of their own demise...
Price is one of those people in love with a toxic abuser. The more cruel Evelyn is to him the more he craves her. I never saw anything incongruous about his obsession. The man needed psychological help for his masochism, but I can completely see when he plays into the conceit that he hates Evelyn. He has a little too much pride to openly grovel for Evelyn's affection, so he plays cat and mouse with her. Maybe her psychopathy is what attracts him to her. For Evelyn it's hate; for Price she's his poison of choice. When the house gets going, what song is blasting? That's right, Sweet Dreams are Made of These, "some of them want to abuse you, some of them want to be used by you." Right after the house took Price's beloved dominatrix and made her part of the cursed souls trapped in that asylum.
I'd just like to say, while still watching the review, that the doctor shutting the locks on the place may have also been to keep the crazy people from getting out. Sadly, he didn't know that they'd turn into ghosts. Poor unethical doc.
Charles Simmons apparently the doctor was a good person who actually wanted to help the patients but he ended up bringing an idol with a demon trapped inside. The demons breaks free and turns everyone evil. The doc realizes this when he has a clear moment of consciousness and closes every one in right before getting killed to prevent the evil from getting out.
I think it's more that the by then possessed doctor didn't want his victims escaping, as mentioned in the film "If vannacutt was gonna die, they were going with him." Or something to that effect.
I just really doubt the Jeffrey Combs psychiatric doctor who experiments on mentally ill patients without anesthesia cares if they turned into ghosts or not.

My main problem with this film is the ending. They are on the top floor's ledge outside of a demon-filled house, locked out because of the security system, with no way down. Overlooking a seaside cliff. Millions or not, they're fucked four different ways.
@@30barajas With the evil of the house set free by the sealed wall broken, wouldn't the crew suffer the same fate as the guests? Plus the entrance was in the south section and they were on a north ledge, so they wouldn't been able to notice them.
12:40 Those are actually based on real sculptures by the artist Honoré Fragonard. They are in a Musume called Musée Fragonard d'Alfort in southeast Paris. The story behind the one sitting on the horse is said to be his girlfriend who passed away due to illness. He didn't want to bury her, so he skinned her, her horse, and preserved the muscles in some kind of wax or varnish. If I'm remembering correctly. For comparison, it's like a French version of the Mutter Museum Philadelphia.
I believe these type of "sculptures" made with real carcasses are called écorchés (flayed figures). Fragonard used his girlfriend's remains for the Horseman of the Apocalypse exhibition?? I doubt the school took well to his use of animal and human remains in his biblical themed exhibits.

it wouldnt even work as a concept really. Maybe in 1999 it would but...in this day ansd age the shocks and secrets would be ruined after the first rider got off...they would be on twitter or whatever and once the first few ppl who rode the coaster ruined every lil secret and gag there would be NO point of the ride. it would just be an odd lil ride that everyone knew what was gonna happen. it wouldnt even be like a fun house it would be a waste. The elevator thing would just be an overly long way to get to the coaster.
I haven't seen this movie in ages so I don't remember. I do remember that technican who dies in the house talking to Pryce after ward about how the flailing arms on one of the fake passangers keeps malfunctioning and he tells him to disable the arms and make him a screamer. Not sure why I remember that and not where the car goes but I do. :)
That car is a dummy car. It just falls into the open ground nearby. Which is kind of dumb as they'd be paying for the repairs on the dummy cars. And as stated above, the shock value is gone after the first ride.
I get the feeling Dark Castle actually try to make horror movies that don't fall into the modern tropes -too- much. Like, these movies are consistently okay, whereas most horror movies are absolute trash. IT's kind of strange for mediocre to be commendable.
I always wondered why this review started with Sweet Dreams, then I saw the movie. Can't believe Marilyn Manson was considered for Vanacutt - mad thought.
You forgot to talk about the scene after the final credits where Price and his wife were getting operated on by the patients in the afterlife...kinda chilling...
Some see it as a bit of a copout but you find out in the sequel none of it was really Vannacutt's fault. As it happens Vannacutt was once a good man and doctor who genuinely wanted to help people, to that end he'd decorate the facility with art he curated from all over the world. Sadly one artifact he obtained was in fact an idol....of a demon called "baphomet" it's said once the idol was in the asylum it took over Vannacutt and his staff, it's then all the evil doings by the Dr. and his staff began, after they died the possessed Dr. kept using the idol to control everyone after death, hence why they attack the characters.
17:00 - The "ghosts are real" twist is too easy. I think a better twist would be to age up Price's tech guy who was manning the traps and have it revealed in the end that the tech guy was one of the patients in the asylum (as a young child) and that he set up extra traps as a way of teaching Price what real fear is like.
Technically the names he typed into his invitation list could have been employees of his park he trusted enough to bring along. Meaning he meant to scare the hell out of his wife with people he could trust in his mind games.
It's odd. There hasn't been any further movies from Dark Castle since 2013's _Getaway_ , apparently when producer Joel Silver moved his office from Warner Bros. to Universal, he took Dark Castle with him.
I watched this when I was a kid and it gave me nightmares for a week. Rewatching this, I just find it a schlocky halloween film. The problem I have is that I remember seeing this in HBO and it having certain scenes or alternate scenes. For examples, I remember it having a more video gamey intro sequence than the one it actually had. With like a red tinted intro with the names of the cast. I also vividly remember the scene with the lady with the camera dying being different. After filming Vannacut and the nurses, she turns around and sees one of the patients with his head moving back and forth at an alarming rate who then moves quickly toward her with her screaming. In the actual film, it's just some guy with a prosthetic face looking goofy and she screams.
really loved the first 3/4 of this movie, they should just kept the doctor ghost as the main overall evil . Got cheesy when they introduced the supreme evil that turns life into dust. Overall, i still love this movie! I even got the interactive return to house on haunted hill. choose your own adventure, haunted hill was fun
Fun Fact: The effects for The Darkness were done by the filmmakers telling a woman to dance naked and they mirrored it numerous times to give it the illusion of trapped souls.
The patients attack of the doctors reminded me of the creatures attacking Dr.Moreau in "The Island of Dr. Moreau" and the Prices hating each other reminded me of "The War Of The Roses"...
Do you think that was covered in the interview for the staff's positions? "Yeah just so you're aware of this. Ahem. If, and I mean this is a BIG IF, the patients somehow break out of their rooms/restraints and form a riot attacking us, you will not be able to escape as I will trap us all in here to be tortured, possibly raped and killed. But I mean occupational hazard, these things happen so when can you start?!"
Sort of related, but I worked in a prison and we were all instructed that in case of a riot, we were not to open any doors for any reason. Even if a prisoner had the warden or something and was doing horrible things, we never open the main door, ever. The scary part is that I could potentially be one of the hostages, and the person in the contro room and I both know that they can't open that door, no matter what happens to me....
Im having a Berenstein/stain moment here!!! In my memory I see James Woods playing Price, and S Y K E . . . it's Geoffrey Rush. Could it have been because of Wood's appearance in Casino??? Talk about proactive interference.
"Jittery body horror" only worked effectively in "Jacob's Ladder". Everything after that was just cliche and often just confusing. It's one of my least favorite horror effects, and I wish it would just stop.
He didn't even name it right, it's technically called "undercranking" iirc it's basically shooting a character at a different frame rate than everything/one else in the scene, making the movements look stilted and "jittery".
The alternate ending on the dvd was an after credit's scene with a realtor showing Sarah's boss the asylum and saying that she had inherited it. When she goes inside, The realtor removes his glasses, showing the audience that he's Dr. Vannacutt, and steps inside the house slamming the door, followed by a woman's scream and a fade to black. Personally, I thought that was a much better ending.
Pretty sure he didn't mention the cameras to the others because he didn't want them to know about them for several obvious reasons. No, why he didn't look himself, probably because he couldn't tell anyone how he knew what he saw without them thinking he killed her himself (which they already suspected).
15:04 so I would already be creeped out by this place and seeing the would have me backing out of that room as fast as my legs could carry me and something as trivial as cast iron plating wouldn’t stop me from leaving.
Did you ever do (or plan to do) Dark Castle's House Of Wax from 2005? Also, many who've reviewed it on RUclips so far mistakenly believe it to be a remake of the '50s film of the same name, which also starred Vincent Price. However, the film only uses the name, which was purchased because it was public domain, and the element of people being entombed in wax, but noting else from the film was used in it.
No I haven't reviewed it but may do in the future, There is of course my Patreon page www.patreon.com/DeusdaeconReviews as an option for review request, Not necessary but its an option.
That doesn't mean it's not a remake. There have been plenty of remakes who just use the name and the basic idea. The part of that movie that I hated the most (and there were many) was that the buildings were actually wax too. That was really dumb. LIke they would last through a single summer. :)
i would have wished for a sequel that have the backstory of vannacut and his evil staff and yes i know they where controlled by the bapthomet statue but still and that more of the guests would have been taken over by the ghost and staff and that they would have made more ideas of that sort !!
Actually, while eiecting a round would prove if its live ammo, that type of ejection system would not allow for reloading from the top, as it would jam the magazine
@@LibraGamesUnlimitedWhen I first watched this movie I was the only one who hadn't seen it, but I was the only one who noticed what the ink blot was made of lol.
Even though this film is entertaining I prefer the original. The original no matter how bad the production is compared to today's standards is still great.
There was an extra scene with Combs, but it was part of a deleted subplot that was frankly too silly, even for this movie. It basically would have ended the movie with a cheap joke. Yeah.
I love this movie. It's a good guily pleasure. God it's been so long since I watched it. James Marsters small roll in the beginning is just icing on the cake, but also agreed, a very underused Marsters. Didnt know he was part of the marketing.
That reporter in the beginning really makes you want to STAY doesn't she? Get it? STAY? I'm here all week folks, don't forget to tip the staff on your way out.
Is it just me, or does Price's guest list include references to Seward (Dracula) and Adler (Sherlock)? Or am I just looking too hard at upper-class surnames?
holy crap Andy! LOL! I was just watching this and your lovely Welsh accent went off the charts for just a second there at the beginning and I had to laugh and share how I noticed it. Because I know you don't think you have any accent at all.
When I think about it. that ghost image and how it decompose people in seconds.. It reminds me of the 'shadow' and ghost of Mamiya, in how it burns you up from inside.
Oh my god! I've seen this movie dozens of times but never noticed the cheap cgi eye movements on the stained glass ceiling. It looks at the guests angrily but is a blink and you missed it kinda thing.
I remember seeing this in the theater when it 1st released. Group of about 10 of us in a packed theater and everyone freaked out at some part of the movie. My gf at the time left nail marks in my arm after the part where we see Vannacutt on the monitors. I also consider the opening credit sequence to be one of the best I've ever seen. Something with the visuals along with the church organ gave me chills. Sets a good tone for the movie, atleast until the darkness is unleashed.
I just found your channel and subscribed. Love your videos. I personally really like this movie. I know it's flawed but, there's just something about it that I like. Maybe it was because it played endlessly on HBO when I growing up. I don't know. I liked you review. Keep up the good work.
We were in high school when this came i remember people saying this is like scarier than exorcist or evil dead etc..... I mean called it a movie of Haunted Asulym with ghosts and full lockdown But yeah yeah in the end............. Ehhhhh..
Good review. Always thought this movie was okay, for I've seen it many times over the years. Just a decent popcorn/horror flick. As dumb as this may sound, I actually enjoy the non-horror scenes in this movie more. Just the interaction between all of the characters, because it is such a random cast.
FINALLY! That "I'm adopted"-twist has stuck with me for over a decade now, but I couldn't remember the title of the movie (saw it on TV in the early 2000's). That so wouldn't work, not even for a second. Think about it, the ghosts want to kill the descendants of their torturers, but those (great-) grandchildren have zero to do with what happened, so what difference does it make if one is adopted?! If there was some other reason (blood magic setting the ghosts free or something), I must've missed it. Still an enjoyable movie, and I like that the black guy lives (Get it together, Hollywood).
My memory is vague, as I was in mid teens at the time, but I either accidentally saw THE HAUNTING remake in theaters, intending to see this, or I saw this intending to see the other. Since I've seen both in the interim, can;t recall which one it was. NVM, 6 min in, getting to the premise-hook-setup, and yeah, this was the one I saw by accident.

Technically the names he typed into his invitation list could have been employees of his park he trusted enough to bring along. Meaning he meant to scare the hell out of his wife with people he could trust in his mind games.
It's odd. There hasn't been any further movies from Dark Castle since 2013's _Getaway_ , apparently when producer Joel Silver moved his office from Warner Bros. to Universal, he took Dark Castle with him.
did anybody else notice clear rivers from final destination
Ali Larter Appears in a lot of my videos weirdly, So you'll be saying that many times.
Ali Larter does happen to be a frequent horror amenity.
I KNEW i recognized her!!!!
Seriously, keep making these. These are incredibly well made
I watched this when I was a kid and it gave me nightmares for a week.
I love the architecture of the building.
I'm so glad that I found your channel, now I have something to bindge on all day! 😉
really loved the first 3/4 of this movie, they should just kept the doctor ghost as the main overall evil .
Genuinely in my top 5 films of all time regardless of what some people say from the actors to the plot to the music I love this classic!!
In my memory I see James Woods playing Price, and
S Y K E . . .
it's Geoffrey Rush. Could it have been because of Wood's appearance in Casino???
Talk about proactive interference.
TBF he was very woodsy in this. Hell it's better than growing up thinking Vincent Price reprised his role for the remake..
Pritchard and Vincent Price were my favorite characters I was sad when they died
The elevator scene reminds me of that glass bridge with screens underneath that shows cracks in the glass when you walk over.
I hate everything about what you described
"Jittery body horror" only worked effectively in "Jacob's Ladder". Everything after that was just cliche and often just confusing. It's one of my least favorite horror effects, and I wish it would just stop.
He didn't even name it right, it's technically called "undercranking" iirc it's basically shooting a character at a different frame rate than everything/one else in the scene, making the movements look stilted and "jittery".
Funny enough they tried to deny that he was based on Vincent Pryce. Going so far as to claim that he's actually based on John Waters. :)
that hyperbolic insanity chamber sequence was definitely the best and most memorable part of the movie.
The cast of this movie alone gets me hyped
Actually, while eiecting a round would prove if its live ammo, that type of ejection system would not allow for reloading from the top, as it would jam the magazine
I did like the fact that the end ghost look like an ink blot analyses
But what did you think the ink blots looked like. :)
To me the blot resembles the endless void my soul drifts within as the world around it goes mad.
@@LibraGamesUnlimitedWhen I first watched this movie I was the only one who hadn't seen it, but I was the only one who noticed what the ink blot was made of lol.
@@ratlover7113 Funny how that works out. :)
Even though this film is entertaining I prefer the original. The original no matter how bad the production is compared to today's standards is still great.
I had forgot how much i loved Manson's cover of Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)!! Great song on a great album!
Did anyone else get "Suspiria" vibes with the falling stain glass shards?
Seeing the Jacobs Ladder nod makes me wonder if you’re going to review it at some point. Unless you’ve already done it and I missed it
There was an extra scene with Combs, but it was part of a deleted subplot that was frankly too silly, even for this movie. It basically would have ended the movie with a cheap joke. Yeah.
"I'm adopted" ?
During the elevator sequence I actually shouted, "Dammit, Price! Stop saying things!"
6:00 the music that plays during that scene as well as some others with that music is one if not the best music played in a movie
Say ain’t this a reboot of the original
BTW you earned a sub my man!
Thank you I really appreciate that.
I love this movie. It's a good guily pleasure. God it's been so long since I watched it. James Marsters small roll in the beginning is just icing on the cake, but also agreed, a very underused Marsters. Didnt know he was part of the marketing.
1:44 big whoop, john wick killed 3 guys with one pencil. This guy killed 1 guy with 3 pencils
David B Andrews it also has a character from a Tales from the Crypt episode the guy directed
HOLT SHIT, THAT SCENE THATS JACOBS LADDER THING I SAW AS A KID AND NEVER KNEW THE MOVIE UNTIL NOW. HOLY SHIT THANK YOU FOR THE HELP
YOU’RE WELCOME
holy crap Andy!
Wouldn't the fake roller coaster get really expensive with the whole launching a cart
7:50. I thought I was seeing Ali Larter twice in that shot. One of those women looks like a super imposed Ali Larter with a different hairstyle
I'm sure the scene at 16:35 was inspired by Aphex Twin - Come to daddy video.
Yaaaassssss
This guy should direct a movie.
This movie was the highlight of my seventh grade year
This movie is my favorite horror movie. Thank you for review!
I just found your channel and subscribed. Love your videos. I personally really like this movie. I know it's flawed but, there's just something about it that I like. Maybe it was because it played endlessly on HBO when I growing up. I don't know. I liked you review. Keep up the good work.
Dude, I fuckin love your work...
We were in high school when this came i remember people saying this is like scarier than exorcist or evil dead etc.....
I mean called it a movie of Haunted Asulym with ghosts and full lockdown
But yeah yeah in the end............. Ehhhhh..
I don't even like horror but I find your videos super engaging
Good review. Always thought this movie was okay, for I've seen it many times over the years. Just a decent popcorn/horror flick. As dumb as this may sound, I actually enjoy the non-horror scenes in this movie more. Just the interaction between all of the characters, because it is such a random cast.
This movie and the Ring were the bane of my childhood
you can't reload the gun from the top if theirs more ammo inside of it cuz the new bullet will fill the chamber, darn i forgot this is an old video
Movie holds up so good IMO.
That was an awesome opening to the roller coaster.
This movie was the source of so many nightmares for me when i was a kid. The way those ghosts shook like they did freaked me the fuck out
#ChrisKattan killin it in this one! Great actor!
