Plus I love how George has a price level on watches that he will not go over , ..that's got to be respected because he could buy almost any high end watch but has this in-built depth about him that no matter how much he loves and wants a particular watch if it's higher than his set limit he will not buy it..

You guys should have a million subs. Flea market advice is great. I found a 35mm hand wind Enicar for £130, serviced. Ticks like a little dream, gorgeous caramel dial, and is my go to dressy watch. We do not need to aim higher and higher. Watches are meant to be enjoyed, no matter what price bracket. I used to think "I'll get a Patek when I'm older"... now I realise that I just need to wear what I love

Adrian nails it for me, and he's right about social media. As someone who is starting to ramp up his collection, I felt the immediate pang to look toward my next watch to buy RIGHT AFTER I finally purchased a watch I had wanted for months. I had barely enjoyed it before I wanted to climb up the next rung of the ladder. While I still have those pangs - I'm on my way, Zenith - I've taken a deep breath and am truly enjoying what I have. I also decided to fully service a couple of older watches, which I expect will create some "what's old is new again" feelings when they come back.

Fun follow-up. I've had a great quarter with my business, so I was primed to buy the Zenith Chronomaster Sport. I watched Andrew's six-questions video a few times - on top of others - and was all set to pull the trigger. Then I took my daughter to the Taylor Swift Eras Tour movie. I promised I would take her next year if she did well at her new school, and she's kicking ass. When I looked up tickets, I discovered the trip all-in is basically the same price as the Zenith. So ... the tickets were bought and the watch will have to wait a lil' bit longer. While it was an easy decision, this video definitely helped with resetting my perspective a few weeks back.

Congrats on an awesome episode and quality production, really enjoyed. Love the different perspectives, insights, and cumulative experience between you.
My analogy for taste in watches is with taste in food.
You start off with simple tastes, love junk food, enjoy the journey of exploring different cuisines from around the world, love finding that little known passionate chef, dabble in the finesse and artistry of a Michelin to celebrate special landmark occasions, but typically come full circle back to the guilty pleasure of junk food that makes you happy :-).
It’s whatever personally resonates, and at different times that could be something that means something to you, makes you feel special, or you simply just enjoy and it makes you happy .

    Yes! Bring it on!
Mine would be to avoid hype around watches you "should" own... get what sings to you.
In my case that's the IWC Mark 16 (which i sold and I'm buying it again next week... lesson learned.. do NOT sell your sweethearts just so that you can try another watch.... be faithful and don't rush...) and my 5600 G shock, but I didn't get those watches because youtubers told me to! Try watches on. And get what you love.
But if they are just wrong, too heavy, not your style etc, be ready to sell it in a few months, without regret. Us watch people are a funny lot and your tastes WILL change and evolve... but take your time when selling. Really take your time, as regret is very common when we want the next great watch... sometimes what you have IS the one
P.s. the reason i say this is i bought a Speedy as my first watch. Without trying it on.... because everyone MUST have a speedy right? Very quickly i figured out that i prefer slimmer and less complex watches... and ones that i can easily read the time on....
it took years to figure out the proportions and style of the right watch for me, and trying watches on has been a huge help....
Oh, and Casio W86 is a little gem, while you wait to find the right watch 😅
I should NEVER have sold that IWC just so that i could get that Aqua Terra.... no no no.... bad Valera From the past...

What I have come to notice in the last few months is, those who say "you don't have to have expensive watches to enjoy watches" or "you can enjoy a range of G-Shocks and still be a collector" are those people who have already expensive watches.. Those that don't have the Omega, Breitling or Rolex etc see these watches as luxury watches and an achievement to once, hopefully get. Talking about feeling pressure to get an AP when you already own a Rolex....thats not normal.
Love the show though guys. Best watch You Tube out there

Also great advice as well Adrian. I have a buddy who wants to keep trading up so he can keep experiencing all the watches but then regret has set in later when he sells a watch off. I personally don't sell or trade in any watches, and don't fall for the hype or the social media influence over certain pieces. I buy with commitment and thinking of how this watch fits me as a person, not to conform to watch social media/influence hype.

My advice about watches to myself would be to stay at it and just like Adrian said take your time. The watches i own and that make me smile the most are the ones i hesitated the longest to buy. There is one i took 3 years and probably 20 trips to the dealer to finally buy. Still rocks my boat when I wear it. Impulse buys were never satisfying in the end. And finally to start buying cheap watches earlier and network actively with microbrands owners. I developed the passion quite late and jumped sort of straight into the 5K+ slate. I regret it. I missed a lot of fun with cheaper watches, and knowledge too.

    Great episode!
I did similar mistakes as Adrian, and I agree with all three of you.
I reach the point where I mix micro/independent watches like Farer, Forzo, Furlan Marri, Brellum with heritage brands like Baume Et Mercier, Breitling, Longines, MIDO etc. Which is not easy, because I restrict myself to only 8 watches collection.
Every watch gives me smile and is me. I don't see myself wearing the most popular Rolex or Omega, it won't be me. Second point is service and care of watches, we should consider that when we get a watch. We should be able to service watch properly and have no financially problem to change bracelet/strap of that watch for genuine part if we want it.
I would love to get AP or VC, but I cannot afford, so I am looking for those watches which I can, which gives me satisfaction and positive energy.
Watch hobby should be personal, (like every hobby), if isn't then you lost. Time to find truth and believe it. :)

This episode resonated with me. Yup, I did the exact thing - I got deep into JLC, bought a Geophysic, a Reverso, a Polaros Memovox (Not a bad trio I must say), I thought that was the brand that will make other watch enthusiasts take me more seriously. But I always felt disconnected with the brand because I'm not the suit and tie guy and every time I went into the boutique I just felt everything was unnecessarily pompous and pretentious.
I learned that the brand and watches were wearing me and not rhe other way around.
I sold all my JLCs and started my love affair with vintage Heuers, reissue Heuers and new modal TAG Heuers. Which was in fact the brand which started it all for me 18 years ago.

Not only awesome watches, but great band on Andrew's shirt - The War on Drugs! Keep up the great work, the three of you! I've learned a lot and enjoyed the format. And what I wish I could tell my younger self about watch collecting is, LEARN all you can about the watches you buy, or are about to buy, rather than going by just how they look. Learn all you can about quartz vs. mechanical, skeletonized vs Tourbillons, moon-phase vs day/night, blued screws vs painted, mineral glass vs sapphire, and on and on. Ask questions before taking the leap. Don't be so impulsive and think about it a few days. I bought so many watches that disappointed me in some way or another just due to lack of knowledge. NOW I spend weeks or even months debating a watch purchase, partly because they can cost as much as an entire month's gross salary. But having that knowledge now is more valuable than having that watch money in the bank.

My favorite watch to wear? My Dad's old Longines. Dad passed away 9 years ago and he was my hero. My Mom found his old watch in a drawer. I had the watch repaired and find my other watches rarely get out of the watchbox these days. Makes me smile, and remember him. Great episode.

Truely the best watch stories are indeed like you just recounted. This is what keeps me in the game. The meaning we put behind these timepieces is what gives the ultimate story and reason to hang onto the piece and pass it down.

Such valid points! We live in a world where a 90 dollar G shock lives on the same plane as a Rolex Daytona, and for the most part people who aren’t into watches have no idea what any other watch besides a Rolex or an Apple Watch even are. It’s only a flex amongst other enthusiasts. The only watches in my small collection that have gotten any attention are my John Mayer G shock and my moonswatch. Collect what you love.

I love my Movado SE. Yes, there are far more horologically significant pieces. But I look at this watch, chosen by my three year old son, with that deep blue dial I get lost in... I even love defending it to snobs! There really isn't a more delightful watch for me to wear. Memories. Stories. My lovely Movado. Done.

My most expensive watch is a 2018 tag heuer link day date, im 52 and wanted a link since the weird alien style ones TH made in the late 80s it's my daily, yet one of my newest and favourites is a sunburst green dial £50 Sekonda and a £700 Seiko Alpine with a champagne dial.
Only thing I'd tell myself if I could go back is save and buy some cheap rolexs back in the 90s to sell now.

I will have to give my vote to Andrew primarily because I like the look of the watch on the matching beige strap.
I would give myself the same advice as George. I always went to flea markets when I was younger but to collect video games. I wish I would have paid more attention to watches because
    1. I think I would have found some great deals
    2. I could have learned so much

Using my About Effing Time Machine, I'd give myself the same advice we hear so often: BUY. WHAT. YOU. LOVE. It's true. Don't buy the hype. Skip the toys and the junk. Buy quality pieces that speak to your interests, dreams, and desires. Follow that advice, and you'll never go wrong.

5:00 In America, people in the ghettos wrap their couches in plastic to not ruin them. I guess it’s the equivalent of taking the bezel off and putting an aftermarket one on. It just shows that you over spent on an item and underestimated its maintenance cost. So you end up having the item but not being able to enjoy it fully.
And if preserving the value of an item for resale becomes the number 1 priority of ownership, then two things happen:
1: Greater Fool Theory always wins
2: ownership becomes a burden vs enjoyment!!
