      Most people are happy to help me get, what they see as junk, out of there house and into my hatchback. But on 3 occasions I have had friends drive down with me and help. It's cool to have company on some longer trips anyways. My XBR was probably a 5 hour drive both ways. My BVM was another 5 hour drive. Both were worth it.

    This is the exact model Toshiba I got for my Retro Gaming. Some PS3 games like Vampire Resurrection actually looked better on it using component out compared to using HDMI on a TV/monitor. This beast can't be moved with one person. The picture quality and sound on it are top tier.

    Do you think a Panasonic Tau with HDMI input would be a good choice for watching movies/anime/tv series? I know HD tvs are frowned upon for retro gaming at 240p, but I mostly would use it just for what I mentioned and also some PS2 gaming with component cable.

    • @Watcher3223
      @Watcher3223 2 месяца назад

      Probably using a signal splitter/amplifier. One source, it goes to the splitter so the video can be distributed to multiple monitors, and the signal is boosted to compensate for signal weakening because of splitting.
      There should be no input lag as there's no converting of the signal from one form to another, just boosting and splitting in the analog domain.

    Great review as always! I actually bought the 27 inch version circa 2004 as my last ‘new’ CRT purchase ever, and loved it. It may not have had the actual Toshiba branded tube, but it still looked really, really good and I preferred it to the comparable Sony models I had prior. A high hour colour crt can ware unevenly as the guns are concerned. This will greatly affect the colour balance. You can adjust the colour bias for the three color (RGB) guns to correct for uneven ware. Accessed by the service menu.

    Wouldn't scanlines only be visible in 480i if you freeze-frame it? Since it's interlaced, I don't understand how there could be visible scanlines when playing, but I do see how they would be visible if you hit pause. But I could be wrong.

    • @riggel8804
      @riggel8804  2 года назад

      It was a bit surprising to me but yeah, I can clearly see scanlines on this tv with 480i while the screen is playing. I should check my bvm and see if i can see scanlines on it too with 480i. I'm not sure what is physically going on that makes this possible. My guess is that the interlacing pattern happens so fast that on a sharp tv your eye perceives a scanline. Similar to the optical illusion that allows a series of images to be perceived as motion when shown quickly i.e. a cartoon.

    I have an 20" RCA F20TF10. It's unknown whether it actually has a service menu or not. I've tried some common RCA codes for accessing the service mode with a remote but nothing has come up. All I really need to do is move the screen slightly to the right and widen the horizontal width. Even just making it wider would make a big difference. Do you know if it's possible to adjust this manually without messing with the yoke? I know some TVs have easy dials to do this but it can vary. Guess I'll have to take the shell off again and see if I can spot anything besides a focus and Brightness knob for adjusting beam width.

    Great TV! Now most people do not appreciate them and get rid of them.
    If these TVs had not ceased to be produced, now models with 1920x1080p, 2560x1440i and 3840x2160i modes could come out.
    And it's a pity that there are almost no CRT 1080i TVs in Russia. There is a Samsung, but it just receives a HD-signal, and displays a maximum of 1024x576p on the screen with poor beam convergence. A real Toshiba HD CRT in a city far away from me.
    Замечательный телевизор! Сейчас большинство людей их не ценит и избавляется от них.
    Если бы эти телевизоры не перестали производить, то сейчас могли бы выходить модели с режимами 1920x1080p, 2560x1440i и 3840x2160i.
    И очень жаль, что телевизоров ЭЛТ 1080i почти нет в России. Есть Самсунг, но он просто принимает сигнал HD, а на экране отображает максимум 1024x576p@60Hz c плохим сведением лучей. Настоящий Тошиба HD CRT в очень далёком городе от меня.

    • @riggel8804

      I think CRTs are ultimately too small to compete with lcds, oleds and projectors in the long run. It was cool while it lasted but if you got $5,000.00 to spend on a tv in 2020 you can do better than a crt. Part of the reason they are cool is that people don't appreciate them and give them away for free. For $20.00 you can't do better than a CRT. Are you in Russia? Can you still find crts easy where you live? They are drying up here in California.

    • @user-mo7ln5rw9f
      @user-mo7ln5rw9f Год назад

      @@riggel8804 Yes, CRTs are very affordable in Russia. But there is almost no CRT with ultra-fine dot pitch and high resolution. 480i is a very low resolution. I plan to purchase a Panasonic CRT for ₽2,000. It supports progressive scan and has a VGA 640x480 input at 60Hz.
      I will use it to play on Xbox 360 S. For Xbox 360 games and backwards compatible with the original Xbox. In Russia, very few licensed games were sold in physical copies, and I do not spend money on purchases on Xbox Live, it is expensive and impractical at the moment. So for now I have to download pirated games on Freeboot.
      But I will use this TV until it breaks from service life, because almost no one repairs CRTs now.
      I am a student, I am 18 years old and I still live with my parents, we do not have a scholarship in our educational institution. And salaries in Russia are very low, especially in our region. We have a big family so we can't afford OLED and CRT is the best option.
      We have a ₽13,000 32" Dexp LED Smart TV (1366x768) and an early Philips 37" LCD TV (1360x768), but black levels and color quality can't compete with CRTs. These displays are only superior in resolution.
      In the future, I will definitely buy myself an OLED display. All the same, technologies are developing and they are already superior to CRT in almost everything.

    I just got a 24af43 the other day that someone put on the curb during my areas spring-cleaning free pick up day.
    No remote, but the tv is pretty amazing (Bought a 9$ GE Universal remote, which granted me access to all the menus).
    While the TV is great, I also got a 20in Sony Trinitron from 1989 off the curb at the same house.
    The person most of really knew their TVs and I'm unsure why they put these on the curb as the Sony also still looks like new despite being 33 years old.
    Between the two TVs I have a hard time choosing between the Sony and the Toshiba.
    The Toshiba wins in the scenarios where I can use component video, such as using my nintendo WII, and hopefully soon a SNES Component cable. The Toshiba has also has slightly better color pop than the older sony, and also denoises composite signals better (expected I guess from a 2003 vs a 1989 TV).
    The sony on the other hand, I prefer the tried and true aperture grill aesthetic over the mask of the toshiba, I also think the pixels are also usually a lot more consistently square.
    The biggest drawback of the Sony is the lack of S-Video or Component Video, if those were available on this set it would be interesting to see how much difference i t would make.
    The biggest drawback to the Toshiba is that there appears to be display bending that I can notice occur occasionally.
    My overall conclusion if i truly had to say which TV is better, I would learn towards the Toshiba, but I keep finding myself going back to the Sony.

"Most picture tubes use standard shadow masks made of steel, which can expand under intense heat. Expansion of the shadow mask causes picture discoloration, often called "doming." But Invar shadow masks are made of a compound of iron and nickel, rendering them extremely heat-resistant.
