Having built a fiberglass 20' kit boat, (back in the day), watching you work makes me wonder how I survived the, (two year) project. My wife and I still remember how we almost, "gassed" ourselves painting the inside of the hull with contact cement before we had 4" of urethane foam sprayed in.
Love that larger long board sander! I do alot of automotive bodywork. I have a 24" or 26" Durablock that i use for larger flat panels...Works great! A helpfull tip for you, when sanding these large areas for example, when you wwnt from the electric long board to the manual long board, you can put a guide coat over that area and it will show you all the defects without having to look too hard. You can either use a dry guide coat, which is basically a graphite powder that you rub over the area. Or i use the cheapest flat black paint in an aerosol can. It has to be flat, because anything with a shine will clog up your paper. Just dust some of the flat black over the area, give it 5 mins, and start sanding. All your defects will start showing up and then you can decide where to sand more, or where to walk away and add another skim coat. This has been a huge help to me, and ive been doing it this way for about 12 or 13 years. Enjoy your Sunday!
Been in the fiberglass boat restoration and repair business for 15 years now love seeing people who share the same passion enjoy your videos man sweet long board too !
I'm starting my fairing compound tomorrow morning on my 17 foot 1960 Boston Whaler I'll be using Total Bolt fairing compound and the education I got from your videos and Total Boats videos thanks for everything. Wish me luck.
The smoothing and preparation phase of the resin-coated surfaces is what I hate but I have learned the hard way of its great importance. It takes patience, patience and more patience. You are a true professional. I look forward to seeing the final result ...
It's very satisfying seeing someone being meticulous about their work because they put their heart and soul into it. The owner will be satisfied with all the work put in.
Your videos have inspired me to take on my own restoration project. I was going to take it to a shop and let them completely rebuild the boat but I decided I could do it myself thanks to your videos. Keep up the good work!
Wow Andy, that electric long board is the bomb. I could see the whole boat moving when you were hand long boarding. No wonder your shoulders felt it. Nice work. Can't wait to see how it looks with primer on it.
Good clip on fairing mate, I've been looking on you tube and there's not a lot of good info on fairing a boat. Those fairing boards, the manual ones, are called torture boards here in Oz and probably elsewhere. Remember everyone sanding is fun, repeat with me
I know is your job and it pays your mortgage or whatever but I really admire your patience. I have to fix some gellcoat, it's about two inches by half an inch and I've been putting it off since the middle of last season, what a wimp l must make it a priority between doing safety cover cutting the grass sorting the boat park out, not to mention the website, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
I absolutely love the real world content of this channel and even more that it mostly revolves around fiberglass and repair work like we all see in the boat hobby. I just this week bought a Catalina 22 to rebuild and your channel was a lot of the inspiration to work it over rather than just clean it up and use it.
Great job! And yes those boats were laid by hand they are very strong boats. Check the flaired lip around the hull they tend to get cracks around that lip also.
Great Job, a little tweak here and there and youre ready for the next step........ Brutas, makes my elbows hurt just to look at it, I have one not quite that large, it stays in the box, way back on the shelf where I cant see it... Nice Work!
There is nothing better than my Chicago Pneumatic air file. I have had it for 36 years. I have a brand new one in my box but the original is still going. Try one. It will sand that deck a whole lot better than that electric do-dad.
I can honestly say is that I have nothing to add. Perfect. What I am curious about however, is what the 4 people who pushed the dislike button have to add?
Hello, I am working on a sailboat restoration and wanted to hear your thoughts on sanding fiberglass with the Dewalt cordless orbital sander using 60 grit paper and up. I have about 4 hours run time with my batteries based on the specs. Thank you for your thoughts on this matter. Also I ws looking at a cheaper version of a wooden long board with the velcro bottom. The hookit 3m fairing board 30 inchs and 55 dollars. The sailboat is a 1965 Pearson Triton 28.
I love watching the tools in action,it gives u an idea of how u can apply them in diff situations and for your own and this is why i subscribe! Thanks again andy once again!feel like i actually learn something when i watch and listen!
Andy , good call that the shoulders said the sanding was enough...Allow me to say 'Its looks good from my House"...Many Txs, always enjoy your vlogs, txs again...
I was wondering how those sanders were going to work out. I wished I had something like that when I was installing sheet flooring for years. I used a razor scraper old school. I had to get some very rough concrete to smooth and flat perfect or the sheet vinyl would show anything that was under it. Now days I’ve noticed the flooring has texture and is way more forgiving of imperfections underneath. Can I borrow one of your brand new sanders when I fill the thousand of cracks on the Amerosport? I guess I’ll have to fall back on my razor skills and my oscillating orbital and a sanding block to finish. Lol. Anyway, looks great and thanx for the video. Oh, and I will be buying from Total Boat when the time comes to help you out. I’m still anticipating your trip to SC to look at the new paint. I like the idea of rolling and tipping.
hi Andy Peter in Barbados, couple of questions, 1) on the island we use automotive paint with silica sand for nonskid. with Totalfair do i need to coat it with anything before priming? 2) I am covering the deck of a 24ft sailboat including cabin house but not the cockpit how much product would i need? 3) the fairing compound that was there before was West System 410 are these products compatible? Your videos are the best I have learnt so much. they gave me the inspiration to rebuild my J24 and another 24 ft home made kit boat. thanks
You do awesome work! Looking forward to seeing how everything looks at the end. Also, thanks for going into the weeds a bit on some of the explanations as it really helps those of us who don't have much, if any, experience working with these products. It goes a long way to helping me, at least, decide which fixes I can realistically take on myself. Thanks again!
i cant find where to buy the electric flexisander you are using. Fantastic videos by the way. you are teaching me alot. i want to replace my deck rotten core. will remove top skin and replace core then replace original skin, grind old diamond pattern of, fair and then apply Awlgrip with soft sand
I like the speed with which you sand. It is very relaxing to me. Sanding produces a certain WA which why you can call it Glorious. A good demonstration of the tools involved.
Love your videos! Been watching them every day and getting great results on my own boat while adding new storage and reinforcing areas where i found delamination. I been working with glass since i was about 9 years old and still have learned so much from your channel! Keep it up man!!
My biggest challenge on jobs like this is shaping the radius In the toe rail, hatches, etc. I end up spending hours hand sanding using the sides of my fingers or hand to establish the radius, but it's tedious and I always end up chasing Inconsistencies. In the previous video it looked like maybe you trimmed a corner of the plastic spreader to match the shape of the radius? any other techniques you've found to really get a nice even shape to the radius?
Thanks for the videos Andy, you have definitely helped me on my projects, currently doing a World Cat hurricane damage restore. Love learning from you!
Another great video, that sander is nice! One thing that I would suggest for sanding is a 3m versaflo powered respirator with FACESHIELD! I have the one with the light weight helmet and have the ear protection installed. It's a little pricey, but the fine dust is bad for your eyes, particularly if it has glass fibers in the dust. I also use heavier weight mechanic gloves, and disposable tyvec suites with a hood, with the idea of having zero skin exposed to the dust. You can avoid the dust, and if you think about how this stuff can make your arms itch, do you really want it on your eyes?
Mine too. I found that gloves help, currently using some leather Mechanix brand that have extra palm padding. Also stopping and stretching every 10 minutes or so and switching hands regularly.
Great show as always! I have a question for you... If you have a boat and you don’t like the colour of the gel coat, can you scuff the surface up and gel coat over the top? Or do you have to rub it right back to fibre glass? Thanks in advance..
Andy, this is awesome. I have a Bertram 31 that has the same issue and I am very appreciative to have such skilled examples to follow as well as the real world materials/tools to do the job right. I've already obtained the fairing board and , after watching your perfect sanding job, I may have to start saving for the sander. I can't wait to see the rest of the Bertram work as well as the finished product. Thanks for sharing; you're doing us all a huge service. A quick question if you have time - how does the fairing compound hold up to dings and traffic? Thanks again.
Hi Andy I like the look of these tools however after looking at the Flexisander website I was hard pressed to see any difference between the fairing tool and the long board sanding tool. Is there a difference apart from the DE model ?
Andy, once again great job. I have learned so much about fiberglass from watching your videos. I have used the Total Boat fairing compound and it works great.
Hi Andy, I'm curious to hear about your long term experience with power sander. I have been using one of these for two years on and off for an osmosis/laminate/fairing/barrier coat treatment on a 44 foot grp sailboat. I have found the machine almost impossible to hold for longer than 3 or 4 minutes and I have already destroyed 2 of the laminated sanding plates. Personally I don't think this machine is ready for production. I will be doing a you tube review in the future. Cheers
INVALUABLE video. Thank you. My takeaway: be meticulous, and BOLD. No guts, no glory

Sanding oh glorious sanding

When I get to the hull I'll definitely be using the 3M powder! Thanks for the info ;-)!!
I had a boatyard from 1975 to 1985. Thirty five years from now when you see that boat, you will be happy you went the distance fairing that deck.
Been in the fiberglass boat restoration and repair business for 15 years now love seeing people who share the same passion enjoy your videos man sweet long board too !

This feels very similar to when I built my electric hydrofoil. Sanding, adding epoxy, sanding and repeat. Takes forever!
Your videos have inspired me to take on my own restoration project. I was going to take it to a shop and let them completely rebuild the boat but I decided I could do it myself thanks to your videos. Keep up the good work!
Glorious glorious sanding.
but the result is pretty dang spiffy ;-)
Very nice work and video Andy, thank you
Great job Andy
I'm learning from you . I think you do great work looks professional
Thanks as always for teaching us amateurs.
Another great video and your daughters' sign-out message gets me in the heart EVERY time.
Nice sanding tools!
Fantastic work Andy, as usual.
Many thanks again. your tips and suggestions have been vital in my sailboat restoration.
I love your video very much,I keep watch every single your videos to learn how to refloor my boat.
Wow Andy, that electric long board is the bomb. I could see the whole boat moving when you were hand long boarding. No wonder your shoulders felt it. Nice work. Can't wait to see how it looks with primer on it.
I still have to do mine, but dreading it as the time involved I really struggle for, but you are my go-to guy to get it done when I do.
I just love watching you and learning! Not that I will ever do much fiberglass repair, but you never know! I enjoy your videos! Nice shop too!
Bruce, I'm in the same boat to make a pun, but just enjoy watching and learning!
Outstanding!!! Andy!! At least it wasn’t over your head!!!!
Thanks for the instructions and demonstrations. This is so helpful and entertaining for us DYI- ers.

Very Nice Sir!
love your videos keep them coming, all the best from down under...🤠
I am learning a lot from your videos thanks.
Doing that for a living.. Looks to be a must have equipment.. Especially the electric version...
Awesome. Your videos are teaching me so much about fiberglassing!! Thank you!!
I like watching your Boatworks Today series and Mads in Sail Life. Looks like you two are comparing notes... keep on it it’s a great dynamic!
Nice Work!

Thanks for sharing!

Another great video, so nice to be able to learn why boats are a lot of work from Denver. Thanks.
I can honestly say is that I have nothing to add. Perfect. What I am curious about however, is what the 4 people who pushed the dislike button have to add?
Outstanding work, sir!
Excellent Andy! I already want to see what paint you are painting with
its 5am here and this is a GREAT way to wake up, especially since i'm planning on working on the boat later! :)
How often do you work on boats? 5 days a week? Do you have a boat yourself? Like your videos.
Your new sander Are the coolest Sanders I’ve seen
I think it looks excellent! Great job Andy!
Love your channel. Could you show how to fill a 2inch hole and how to fill screw holes in gel coat. Thanks.
Ahhh sanding... glorious sanding. Reminds me of another boat restoration channel.
Love your work. One day I will have a project of my own and your videos give me confidence to take one on. Thx
The deck does look great Andy! Thank you for the videos!
The tape in the wetdry!! I keep bring my trash can over! Lol!! Does look good!!
QUALITY. NICE

How well will that flex. Any worries about it cracking with it being on the front of the boat ?
Is there any difference between fairing filler and auto body filler.
Andy , good call that the shoulders said the sanding was enough...Allow me to say 'Its looks good from my House"...Many Txs, always enjoy your vlogs, txs again...

I really enjoyed the musical accompaniments could you please list who the artists were and the names of the tracks.

What some consider overkill, could be adequate to others. Keep up the high standards Andy!
i cant find where to buy the electric flexisander you are using. Fantastic videos by the way. you are teaching me alot. i want to replace my deck rotten core. will remove top skin and replace core then replace original skin, grind old diamond pattern of, fair and then apply Awlgrip with soft sand
I agree it looks great!
Great video as we expect from you every time. Have been building a 20' frame/plywood boat and you've become my go to guy!
Which type of 80 grit Abranet sandpaper did you use?
Looks good Andy! Audio seems better to me as well.
I got to take a break, my shoulders hurt just watching that.
Hi. I've looked at your movies a bit sporadically, but now I've started subscribing. I like to build things, but I am not on your level. Good work!
I like the speed with which you sand. It is very relaxing to me. Sanding produces a certain WA which why you can call it Glorious. A good demonstration of the tools involved.
Hey quick question also. What’s the best respirator filters to using working with polyester resins ?? Thanks!
that's really nice work what was the little electric sander called?
Love your videos! Been watching them every day and getting great results on my own boat while adding new storage and reinforcing areas where i found delamination. I been working with glass since i was about 9 years old and still have learned so much from your channel! Keep it up man!!

That turned out really nice Andy, what's the working life on the final fare ?
It says on the total fair container that gelcoat wont cure properly over the totalfair compound. I see you do it here. Have you ever had a problem?
what grit sandpaper did you use?
Another great video, that sander is nice! One thing that I would suggest for sanding is a 3m versaflo powered respirator with FACESHIELD! Those Flexi sanders are awesome! What a nice job they do. And you too.
What are you using on the flexi sander?
you make it look easy, i am sanding the sides of my boat no fund
Noob w/a possible dumb question. Is a veil layer or 2 pre faring layer useful in any way?
Quick question on the process overall. Is it Prep, lay glass, glazing putty, primer then top coats?
How does that power sander work in terms of vibration isolation? Most sanders kill my hands.
It's better than a lot of other sanders I've used lol!! Overall not too bad IMO
Mine too. I found that gloves help, currently using some leather Mechanix brand that have extra palm padding. Also stopping and stretching every 10 minutes or so and switching hands regularly.

Andy, I do have a question for you, would you use total fair to shape a shower pan in a boat?
I agree that the deck turned out great but now my shoulders are sore from watching you maneuver Brutus.
Heating pad here I come.
Awesome vid man....your shoulders must be hurting...i do alot of sanding by hand too....gets old after awhile....
Awesome work, what brand of sand paper (cloth/mesh) are you using? Unable to hear what you said. Thanks for your time and vidio's.
It's Abranet made by Mirka :-)
So satisfying! Sanding! 😆 can’t wait to see the next part.
Andy, once again great job. I have learned so much about fiberglass from watching your videos. I have used the Total Boat fairing compound and it works great.
Nice. Thx for sharing..👍🇧🇲
you left that sanded at 80 grit or you've run finer steps also ?
Hi Andy,
I'm curious to hear about your long term experience with power sander.
