I have never found any help for drug use, because it's presented as a moral decision, instead of a health problem. Making it a personal problem is ridiculous. I believe just treating it like any other illness, instead of some lack of will power, is so much more effective.

I was a drug addict for over 30 yrs....just got it in my mind one day, that was it! Locked myself in the house and went through awful withdrawals! Ridiculous amounts of pills, heroin....and all 6 months after I lost my mom and dad..I believe that what keeps us addicted is the fear of knowing what the withdrawals will be like...was for me. But it's remembering all of that is what keeps me Clean, 8 yrs and counting. If you don't REALLY want, or HAVE TO to quit, you won't. Good luck.

2016 Chevy Chase was 72 when he went to rehab for the second time, I have used his experience to help with my own addictions. I've been to rehab twice already and I'm twenty years younger than Chevy. The addicts around us can help by example, if not good, then bad. We have to learn somehow.

The worst thing about mental illness is learnin how to pretend you're just fine. We think you can see right through us, that it's written on our forehead "I'm bipolar with PTSD". The war on freedom also known as the war on drugs is the first crime against a free society, the other is the social and economic challenges that breed addiction. These are the two things that do not get near enough attention, whereas the finger is always pointed at the addict instead of the problems created by a dreadful lack of care.

Celebrities have such easy access to 'good' drugs, no street drugs for them, but the outcome is usually the same. well, often people go on to relapse.. that doesn't mean they haven't been sober for many many years. She wasn't necessarily lying about her treatments or her sobriety, since we can't know when she relapsed. Not that it's our business either way. I still appreciate her advocacy for de-stigmatizing both addiction and mental illness with the platform she had.

@@malish7240 You're right of course. I think I was just shocked by all the drugs in her system because I did believe she had quit long ago. As someone with bipolar (diagnosed age 13), self-medicating is such a huge problem. I agree with another commenter that if society treated drug addiction/abuse and the effects of mental illness intertwined with some drug use as a HEALTH problem and not simply a personal lack of willpower or morality, we could learn so much more to help people.
Imagine having the awkward teenage/depressive adult years of not wanting to be yourself for whatever reason and escaping into reading, games, or whatever -times a billion- and you have many mental ill people and how they feel every day of their life. It gets to you when you lack biological control over your own emotions and thoughts, even sometimes what you see and hear (hallucinations happen with generalized anxiety, bipolar, and many other more "mundane" disorders: many people don't know this). Your brain has a massive chemical imbalance that literally affects your reality and how you interact with your world, in many of these cases. We have empathy for those with something like Downs Syndrome, because we can visually SEE the effects of such a syndrome typically. Mental illnesses are sneakier and harder to spot, while being even harder to cope with (than spotting it, not harder than dealing with Downs Syndrome: I would never assume there to be a competition between two people who suffer from things they have going on- we all experience pain differently).
I hope these people at least find peace in their passing. Most of us simply want stability and the "normal" life many lead.

I think that the pharmaceutical companies should pay people that got addicted on them. I use to have a friend that got addicted to OxyContin. He had his thumb almost cut off. This is what the docs sent hm home with. He used it so long that he could not do without it. He got so skinny and almost died from it. I got him help. He is off of it but it cost a lot of money for rehab. The pharma. Companies should not pay states from a law suit but pay the people that are hooked on it to go get help and the counties and parishes should have a rehab center so people don’t have to go a long away from their families.

Rest in Peace, Carrie. You were such a rich talent and so very beautiful - even as you aged. Another victim of concentrated and therefore very powerful opiates. I was prescribed oxycodone for chronic pain (severe degenerative arthritis in both knees - inoperative at the time) 16 years ago before the powers that be had a full understanding that long term use of these concentrated powerful synthetics cause more harm than good as the patient slowly moves into tolerance yet becomes deeply addicted. I’m off the poison now - 6 months on methadone so I can completely relate to Carrie’s battle. There is a lesson here. Don’t even use this concentrated poison short term. It is easy to become addicted which can lead you to other outlets. The best advice is to grin and bear your pain unless you are in final stage hospice. Use non-concentrated natural pain relief including specific movements/exercises. Learn from my 2 decade painful struggle in addition to Carrie’s heartbreaking public struggles.

Wow, that is a serious blend of drugs, especially the coke+Methadone mix, even without the H on top of it, those two are like doing a speedball, something you just don't want to do at her age. Doing H while on Methadone, is kind of pointless, you'd have to do a lot to anything from it, I imagine that's what happened, and it was just too much for her heart, combined with the coke, damn...no wonder I thought she was older! Another great tragedy of drugs, alcohol ever since the Golden Age of Hollywood since the 1920s, 30s, 40s and 50s and up to today so nothing new along with many suicides and even murders! There are great Hollywood Death books that list all the actors/actresses, directors, screenwriters etc. and how and when they died and where they're buried since around 1915! The very dark underbelly of Planet Hollywood! Thought her death was tragic and then to hear her beloved mother passed away as well was very sad indeed! Debbie had mentioned that one of her greatest fears was that she would lose her daughter to drugs etc. and then she did and Carrie also suffered from bi-polar, a mental illness and was very open about that even with her great sense of humor about it! May they rest in peace~💜💜

How very sad. Drugs and alcohol killed many of my friends that I grew up with in the 70s, I wouldn’t touch either, it’s bad enough still being hooked on cigarettes. The best way to avoid addiction is just never to try any drug, including alcohol and tobacco, they are much more addictive than people think. Some of my surviving friends, all these decades later, still struggle with addiction.

Amazing the change in how Carrie looked in her early days vs her final days. And I'm not just talking the natural aging process, hell we all go thru that. But it does appear that decades of drugs, alcohol and terrible plastic surgeries really took their toll on her.

She was such a beautiful young woman, and I agree. She most likely would have aged gracefully if not for her illnesses. Tragic ending for such an inspirational person and cultural icon.

Why does it seem that all of the celebrities have drug addiction problems?

I'm sort of confused about falling into an Apnea sleep. Apnea means you are not getting enough air so you wake up so it's odd that it was said she was sleeping an apnea sleep. Apnea is more of a cause of heart disease or high blood pressure than itself killing you. Since lots of drugs were in Carrie's system it sounds like that was the root cause of death. I have apnea and you wake up a lot with it and need a face mask to sleep.

I'm still trying to find my way into the alternate reality where Carrie Fisher did not die and her character Leia was the focus of the final film of the sequel trilogy.
