- In this profile originally broadcast on February 1, 2004, actress and author Carrie Fisher (best known as Princess Leia of "Star Wars") talked with correspondent Rita Braver about her novel "The Best Awful," a thinly-fictionalized account of how Hollywood talent agent Bryan Lourd - the father of Fisher's real-life daughter - left her for another man, and of her battle with mental illness.
Carrie is on that short list of funny people I wish we could have kept for forever, like Don Rickles and Robin Williams.
Her father abandoned her to go to Elizabeth Taylor; the man who raised her and loved her like a daughter cheated on and bankrupt her mother; the man she gave your heart to, left her to go back to his wife; and the man who fathered her child, left her for another man. None of this could be helpful to her self-esteem and psyche. I pray that Carrie has found peace on the other side AND gotten her reward for a life lived as well as one could under the circumstances.
Was that Paul Simon that went back to his wife? Or someone else?
@@whereismyxanax I think it was Harrison Ford
God I miss her and ain’t even met her , just a down to earth humble lovely person.
William Talbert Inlove so much more after seeing this, such a beautiful person always
I'm so heartbroken that our Princess is gone 😭💔 Carrie Fisher was an icon and a legend not only for her iconic role but because she was an amazing/beautiful person inside and out, her wit and personality was honest and real and that's what made everyone love her. You can tell Debbie Reynolds was her mother/best friend and that's why Debbie couldn't take it, she died of a broken heart and wanted to be with her daughter 😭 But my heart is so broken for Billie Lourd she lost the two most important people in her life, her mother and her grandmother. I hope she knows she's not alone and we all love her 💕 This interview was amazing and I'm so happy CBS uploaded it!
What a hoot she was! I miss her +her incredible writing so much. Thank God we had her as long as we did. Carrie was an amazingly humorous lady! I hope she is at peace. Thank you for sharing yourself with us!
Carrie and Debbie both had volumes of humor, and that gets you through 💔
It's still unbelievable. Shakespearean in its tragedy.
FACTS :-)
Just such a SWEETHEART -- I had the pleasure of meeting Debbie in Las Vegas and also corresponding with her regarding the memoir I was writing on the famous comedy actress, ZaSu Pitts. Debbie was glad to help in any way she could. Hands With a Heart: Bio of Actress ZaSu Pitts then went on to win book awards. What a pleasure to research; what a heartbreak to know Debbie has now left us.
There are so many sorrows around Carrie which makes it even easier to love her as a person. And now miss here when she is gone. R.I.P Carrie!
In hindsight, Carrie was "blessed" with the most supreme movie role of the previous as well as this century, but she was also hurt by so many things around her. She is surely missed!
Rest in peace together
Thank you for this. RIP Carrie and Debbie
In spite of all the levity that was part of Carrie's writing and conversation, she dealt with a serious mental illness.
It is a sign of her courage that she spoke about her struggles and in many ways brought that subject front and center to all of us.
Her life was too short and we who loved her and her enormous talent will always miss her.
This feels like a real life version of the Gilmore Girls. RIP Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds.
It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, and through it all for Debbie and Carrie it still somehow remained a charmed life. 💜
How heartbreaking that she and her mother were so close that Debbie died two days after Carrie died of a heart attack. Debbie Reynolds, according to her son Todd, said, “I want to be with Carrie”, and in a matter of moments, she was.
RIP two legends.
It was ONE day after Carrie died. It was barely 24 hours.
@@katemaloney4296 Kate it's still unbelievable. Shakespearean in its tragedy.
Any "Postcards From The Edge" fan would have appreciated the thunder-stealing.
“If my life wasn’t funny, it would only be true. And that is UNACCEPTABLE!”
God Damn!! This woman was brilliant!!!
Dear God this woman is missed. Forever our Rebel Princess.
Carrie looked older than she was and Debbie looked younger than her actual age.
Carrie Fisher's marriage to a gay man and his not telling her of his sexual proclivities seems to have been the start of her later very serious mental issues which stayed with her until she passed away. She survived, but it was very painful for her as it would be for anyone.
Her only husband was Paul Simon she never married Bryan Lourd.
"I just came up to clean the fountain!"
They were/are really fantastic. Whether they were together or not. But best tigether. RIP lovely ladies. (Note to self: I really need to read Carrie's books...)
This is one of the best of her interviews because the interviewer didn't ask stupid questions.
Thank you. I was hoping you'd post this. I saw the original broadcast and never forgot it.
R.I.P Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds May God be with you 😰😰
Loved this; thanks for posting.
I love her quotes
I can't believe that she is gone. She was still young when she died but I can't imagine what her daughter is going through as she lost not only her mother but her grandmother within 24 hours of each other.
Debbie and Carrie, You are missed!
Carrie and Debbie were soulmates
I find it hard to take that Carrie has gone tbh
It's still hard to believe today, 2019.
@@ClarenceFisher
I agree. 💜
I adore Carrie fisher@ I don't know anyone who is so talented, funny, witty, and has such a heart. I too know what it's like to have a powerful over the top drop dead gorgeous mom! my mom used to be mistaken for Liz taylor, and as a little boy, men bothered us constantly, even in my mom's 70s she had suitors, but my mom was like, I've buried 3 husbands, raised for kids, I've made my coffee, she said if rather eat bon bons, read a book, watch tv, take a walk, I'm not taking care of another man. mom who turned into a butterfly 2 years ago and flew over the rainbow, I feel you all around me, we miss you terribly, is give anything for one of your hour phone calls when you needed it.....miss your sound advice and thoughtful heart ❤❤❤🦋🦋🦋
Omg.. they were\are awesome. ❤ "You know that saying, You'll find somebody when you're not looking?.. or how about this, No you won't. lol. wisdom for the day." (Story of My Life) LOL 😂
EXACTLY!!!
I still miss them both now. On screen they make smile. They are both immortalised on celluloid. There legacy lives on.
I hope in the end she was happy, i don't know why i'm so interested in her personal life but i think it's because when you look at photos of her when she is young and full of warmth and happiness and see the struggles she had in life and sorrow i just hope she was content with life towards the end. All you hear in the media is the bad things that happened. She wears her heart in her sleeve so she exposes all her personality in interviews etc. I wonder how she didn't find the right man and if in the end she was happy and at peace with life
Well...I'd say Carrie's talent shone through. For Debbie's perspective @ Carrie....suggest you search youtube for an @2013 interview from NYC's 92nd Street Y. Carrie's best friend, Penny Marshall, died just last month...with some sources saying that Penny's heart and spirit were broken after Carrie died....think they shared the same birthday. God bless both of their children....and Todd Fisher.
I met her days before she died. I think she was happy. the glow I felt off her made me think so :)
💙
Her and Margot Kidder were very similar in their wit, bi polar, and realism and good friends both gone due to mental illness and poor choices at the end. Miss them both so much.
I met her as a driver. She was everything I needed her to be.
Carrie Fisher is one of my favorite people of all time, and her mom was her perfect foil. I love them both! A fab pair of mother-daughter soulmates
Debbie & Carrie...they are amazing...
it makes me sick she dies so young and unexpectedly. i don't get it. how can people have zero symptoms of heart disease and then just be gone in the blink of an eye.
2:25 I realized that it's true Billie Lourd's voice is exatly the same that her mom in her young age!
What a gifted women so much missed
Beautiful inside and out, from the day she was born until the day she died. 💜
It's not that he left her for "another" man; he left her for a man.
I like her so much.. she is such a really NICE person. 🤗
I can see these two in Heaven...taking a walk through the garden and pointing out things that need work done.😆💕
this hurts really it does
Oh I agree, it does hurt, very, very much,. Anyone would think I knew her personally from the way I feel. I play all her you tube videos. However, I play this one over and over again......
She was funny to the end being buried in a Prozac pill🤣🤣
I absolutely love this woman Carrie Fisher is so gifted she was just a special soul so darn funny
Rest In Peace to this beautiful Mother and Daughter💕
Love her... such an inspiration even from the grave - or should I️ say Prozac pill! Finding humor in the bitter ugliness of her life, while trying to live up to the glamorous disaster that was her birthright of the spotlight. Everyone should try to be more like the legend, Carrie Fisher.
Fun interview. Her and her mother were obviously very close.
Gosh, she was a hoot! Miss her.
Intelligence, creativity & tremendous sense of humor, talent plus humility
I just adore Carrie and I send her and her parents love right now.
Interviewer doesnt understand the first thing about mania.
Most people don't.
brian didn't leave her for 'another' man, he left her for a man. wish they would say that right.
No, "another man" is correct, as Carrie does come across as "manly" herself.
@@jackanthony976 oh, she did not!
@@songbirdy ..Do you really think it was his first??? Really??? Come on! Nobody leaves a wife for a man if he doesn't recognize ffor some time that he is gay. That wouldn't be a momentary weakness or all of a sudden he realized it, it would have developed during his life, and the guy most certainly wasn't his first.
it's funnier when you add the word 'another'
Like Jimmy Buffet sang .if we all couldnt laugh we'd all go Insane.
They truly were close and you can tell. They were both so funny too.
She had a quick wit, great sense of humor and didn't mind betatating herself now and then! I liked her! And I'm gonna read her other books!
I would love to have the full interview of Debbie & Eddie on Person to Person when he sang Your Eyes are the Eyes … Can't find it on youtube
Thanks for the information. A possible lead: There's an archive source maintained by the NYC based Museum of Radio and Television Broadcasting (the museum has undergone a name change, so search knowing this) that I used to search before the existence of You Tube. (They had a 1970's Richard Pryor Show therapist sketch that had meant a lot to me.)
Hey Nancy, here's the link to the Debbie and Eddie piece on Person to Person, ruclips.net/video/h4A8RI1wg5Q/видео.html
I love Shirley McClain, Debbie Ronalds Merly Streep and Carrie Fisher. 201 ❤️👍😜🤓❤️
How about funny & true, the best combo! 👌👏👌👊
Gerald Frank
And it’s attractive
incredible they died one day apart.
Whats incredible here? Pain?
Comedy masks a great deal of pain.
I so miss her 😢
Wonderful lady,so wise and it's true you don't find someone when your not looking, but you know that's OK ☺🇬🇧
It seems that very intelligent Carrie, was handed a very difficult life. Because of the layers of dysfunction, she was trapped. Her Mama was one of my favorite entertainers!!!
Sadly missed.. R.I.P.
lovely lovely carrie
The most honest woman I ever say, highly intelligent and very beautiful.
In old Japan, only men actors were used in female parts. Mostly the same in the USA. Its a spell not many can see through.
I MISS THEM BOTH!
She looks good
To this day I have never been able to figure out why so many charming women choose loser guys.
You know I used to think that too, then I realised I ain't perfect either. My narcissism was cleared over night, give it a shot dude
Debbie était vraiment une femme magnifique woah
Both Carrie and Debbie suffered serious Heights and Depths - of Challenges.
I wish they had come to understand the Mind's Thoughts - Subconscious and Conscious + the Law of Attraction - the Science/Phisology/Biology and the Quantum Physics facts that too few are aware of - the true energies of our World and Universe - and the reality of us - our Souls having a Human Journey Experience.
This could have offered them great comfort and the understanding would have offered the greater opportunity of achieving their Hopes and Desires.
I wish their Souls eternal Positive Energies - and Joy.
Thankful I knew Debbie.
Xoxoxoxo

GOD LET ME UNFINISHED, 2016 is the worst, fucked up year it is... #yearofthereaper
Pink Guy Of DOOM agreed
I think after this she did something in her lips and she didn´t look so much like herself any more.
Messed-up..had too many issues trying to live in two worlds (hollyweird and reality) at the same time.
She was a comic Genius.
And Hollywood is only 10 square miles small.
❤🌹👏✊🤘🖖✌👍
Her and Harrison would be so much better together
SolitIre
... she's still on medication...🧘
First
When I see Carrie as a baby it is so cute but who could have imagined she would have become so beautiful and talented and so funny . Definitely a one off and so much missed xx
Missed
She looked about 63 here
The coke started to change her look at this time then loosing her teeth.
She looks a little bit high in this interview.
One little touch from Jesus!!.....oh, just a touch, thats all I need.
The price of fame , is way too high, when you look at theses poor ppl !!!
Kids don’t do drugs
Carrie was married one year because she was a closeted lesbian. I loved her, respect her choices and LOVE her books.
47 in this? She's a solid 62.
Paper Sack this is such a typical, rude remark and out of utter ignorance. You watching this interview even if you didn't sit through it all very well heard that Carrie lived with bipolar her whole life because this interview literally started with her being asked of her mental illness. And later they said that Carrie was on medication, still was, from so young. A side effect of medication is weight gain which is why she "looks different" from when she was younger even though she wasn't that old here too. Her constant weight trouble weighed a lot changing her body and all. Her weight and appearance was something again her being her was joked about by her but in the interviews you see that there's sadness.
This was a rude and just typical ignorant comment. You dont have respect for her and to talk about this instead of the wonderful person she is is just sad and disrespectful
@@janinemack1745 tldr
Meryl Streep played a terrible Debbie Reynolds. She was too old for the part
I don’t understand how Carrie thinks she had a terrible childhood when brother Todd had no mental problems. I think Carrie enjoyed all the attention
@Judith Ryle have you seen Todd Fisher? He is an extremely odd man and he's had his fetishes as well as cult like behaviors that he has participated in. He is a survivor for sure... But he has issues. Read his book, MY GIRLS.
