DW, what's wrong with leasing an island? Are you suggesting that the island should be taken over by gun boat and killing as when the British took over Hong Kong in the 19th Century? Yeah, and the 2 Opium Wars against China then during the Qing (Ching) Dynasty were done totally very democratic, the British Parliaments passed the resolution each time round to attack China because China refused Victorian Britain to force huge quantity of opium into China and to take away tons of silver and gold from China.
What point are you trying to make? Two wrongs make a right? "Hey man, rome used to own slaves, so why do people say I can't own slaves now?" Also, back then those two countries didn't have world ending nukes.

When Chinese hosts a casino in Cambodia, western media said China wants to build a military base there. Now, China wants to develop petrochemical industry on one of Solomon islands, forecast of military base again crops up. China operates a petrochemical plant on an island off Brunei for years, a military base has yet to emerge. The industry generates income for Brunei which has problems with low oil price. Likewise, the lease would inject much needed funds to Solomon Islands and more when production comes on line. Has Taiwan in all the years of diplomatic relation with Solomon Islands ever thought of starting industries to improve livelihood of people there ?

Its the money. The other guy pays its lease whereas the other guy pays what? Whoever stays on that island, the owners couldn't care less. They end up the same way anyways so why not go with the one with benefits on the side?
So what if China ultimately wants to build a military base there. If US can have a few hundred military bases around the world, and surrounding China with many of its bases, why can't China build a base there in that solomon? In 1930s', when Taiwan was a Japanese colony, Japan took control over the 11 Dash-lines (its islands, reefs & shoals) ...China protested .... but no other nations protested because those islands, reefs & shoals didn't belong to them. When WWII was over, the Japanese government had to return Taiwan and the 11 Dash-lines (its islands, reefs & shoals) back to China. In 1950s'/60s' when PRC (Red China) was being sanctioned by US ... and the ROC (Free China) was being protected by US military forces stationed at Taiwan .. the US forces were helping ROC to manned the outposts by rendering assistance to ROC in the logistics of transporting the Chinese military men from Taiwan to those 11 Dash-lines outposts in the South China Sea. But, when ROC was expelled and being replaced by PRC (at the UN) .... the US, (in order to contain and obstruct the rise of China) started .... (i) to dispute the legitimacy of the 9 Dash-lines ... and (ii) to encourage many ASEAN countries to claim "ownership" of those islands, reefs or shoals .... and (iii) to deliberately ignore the fact that 1982 Convention was not expected to deal with islands, reefs or shoals (already being claimed by China) (iv) to protest that these 9 Dash-lines contravene the freedom of navigation. Is this the way to talk about the "rules base UN international order"?

Some facts. The nine dash line is used to be called eleven dash line pre dating PRC (is ROC which represented China in UN). So it is a not a claim made recently. There is no UN position on this. The so called UN position was a tribunal court funded by US and Philippines and an arbitration court supposed to be valid when both parties agreed to participate. In this case China did not and therefore not legit. UN made it clear that this court is not related to UN.
That is completely false. The 9 dash line violates more than a few UN positions including that you cannot own international waters and that you are only allowed a small 25-35 mile economic zone past the coast line. They also ruled on artificial islands not adding to that economic zone. Its an absolutely insane claim that sees China owning waters hundreds and hundreds of miles off its coastline but 15 miles off another countries coastline.
@@meganh9460 facts, the claim of 11 dash line was made way before UN was established. Any law domestic or international usually does not cover existing exceptions. UN conversations do not apply to any countries that don't sign on. The dash lines (11 or 9) are not solid (border line).

Same game different commodity

If USA thinks that they alone can do certain things, then they have to wake up and deal with the reality.

But, when ROC was expelled and being replaced by PRC (at the UN) .... the US, (in order to contain and obstruct the rise of China) started ....

@@meganh9460 facts, the claim of 11 dash line was made way before UN was established. Any law domestic or international usually does not cover existing exceptions. UN conversations do not apply to any countries that don't sign on. The dash lines (11 or 9) are not solid (border line).

The US basically ignored Solomon Island for decades. Now China want to invest in Solomon Island, as usual the nosy US suddenly become so concern of the Solomon Island lol
"Right side of history". C'mon mate, just spit it out: right side of money so I will maintain my leadership.
Exactly
How the US media do not report the Catalan and London? You all day reported the China News
They did, check the previous videos they posted. And this is German news lol.
And according to Dreamworks‘ newest movie Taiwan straight up belongs to China now.
Before the Solomon Islands Prime Minister knows China will rename Solomon Islands Sea as the new South China Sea, then the Prime Minister of Somon Islands will scream for help to deal with China's deception and betrayal. What does he mean, "the right side of history"?
LOOK CHINA RECORD . HONG KONG TAIWAN , WHO NEXT SOLOMONS.
@@wilo1463 isn't Hong Kong a Chinese city 🤦? Does Taiwan not claim the whole of China, including Mongolia at some point, and has an 11 dash line claim in the south china sea?

@@wilo1463 you don't read history enough.

I'm surprised the Taiwan representative kept mentioning Hong Kong. One country two systems can be interpreted in many different ways. Taiwan and China currently still claim to own each other which essentially is already one country two systems.
China betrayed Hong Kong already don't believe China
@@ajnarula9492 china betrayed HK is one thing, Taiwan is a different situatuon. If Taiwan wants to be left along, and not become the next Ukraine, Taiwan needs to be friendly to China. Americans playing Taiwan games now this is super dangerous.
China lease outpost military for strategic and expansion, china challenge US superpower status..
yea.. so much, for the so-called peaceful china!!
UK did the same for Hong Kong and Macau for 99 years didn't they?
The Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea act as geographic barriers to the Pacific from any advancing power from the north. China is trying to weaken Australian defences. China has basically been at undeclared war against Australia for at least 2 years now. The Solomons and Papua are where the Australians held out against and stopped the Japanese advance against Australia and with the might of the Americans, pushed the Japanese out of the Pacific. China is seeking to weaken Australian/American defensive positions, as the Japanese tried to do nearly a century ago.
papua new guinea and solomon islands are independent governements with the right to do their foreign policy in the way it suits them. They are not your defensive barrier. And most importantly they are local people they were not brought from UK and european prisons like australians.

Taiwan should be reunified with its motherland. No point resisting as it is just a matter of time. Besides people on both sides of the strait are one - Chinese.
Hong Kong is a clear example of why that will never happen.
Step by step, more to come.

Good idea lease the island for the better.
It is very clearly . If USA would have leased than Twain and some puppets say ok and they would never complain and nor argued . But if China 🇨🇳 would do some thing good why so much criticized.
Time for the West to lease a nice chunk of Taiwan! It would serve the never-elected Chinese Communists right.
China is strong, irrespective of whether you like it or not, China will excert some influence in the south pacific. Japanese used military means and failed, we will use economic means. Look at those islanders, they are living in appauling conditions, without electricity, without internet connection, without a decent healthcare system. And Taiwan is part of China, sooner or later, it will be reunified by whatever means possible.
People seem to forget the two islands that were nuked by America in that very Ocean. I’d think twice about taunting the US.
Where was China 15 years ago when the Solomon Islands became a failed state?
it is none of others' business. the sovereign country and its islanders have the right to decide for themselves.
In 2018, Vietnam government tried the same thing but failed.
They’re allowed to make deals. The USA does it so can other countries.
China had help and invest in many countries, where is the military based? Many the problem is when DW have sensitive and critical Indian host on the topic perhaps, no?
Wow now aussie you can feel how Russia felt
The Hague International Court ruled that the 9 dash line does not exist based on what CCP led China claims that it is based on their history. There’s no historical evidence as proven by the Philippines. It’s the Philippines that has a map that shows that the Spratly islands are included in the map as early as the 1700. Merry But China has historical writings that claims that their southern boarders are around Hainan Island which is very near China as late as the 1800s... check out the international ruling in 2016.
NONsense . Even US recognised it until China became Communists.
UNCLOS ruling IS NOT LEGAL OR LEGIT because China did not participate and under the rules both sides must agree for any ruling to be valid. China already knew they will appoint biased judges.... by a Japanese guy.
So it is not binding . All member of security council also in the past did not obey the ruling of this court
US is not even a member...
Why do you have to bother about Taiwan who has always been a part of China. Bother more about your own country.
What ever court, it is made by human.
The Arbitration Tribunal is non-binding. An Arbitration Award is worth its weight if both parties agree to the Arbitration. In this case, China did not submit to this Arbitration. They boycotted it.There is no jurisdiction.
It is not by The Hague. Please get your facts right.
Bullsht! Telling lies again!
History is repeating itself in military build-up as China 🇨🇳 is looking to expand. Myanmar, Africa, Spratley Islands Paracel Islands, and Afghanistan for mineral exploration for China! Washington, Australia, Great Britain, Canada. South Korea and Japan need a multinational military protection force to show China that they will not bealkoqwd tosetup a military base in The Pacific.
Taiwan is breathing the last breath . Share the last breath with American. Then only 0.5 of last breath before coming to reality of time, American and Australia heart shrink by 10 percent

"..... there's one question you've got to ask yourself: Do I feel Tulagi? Well, do You, punk!??"
I think Taiwan independence will be a long shot especially when 98% of Taiwan's population are Han Chinese. Now, mainland's percentage is something like 91% or 92% which means Taiwan is more "Chinese" than mainland China in proportionate terms. I don't think one country or two country is the problem, the issue here is a political clash. It's a fight between political parties for who will run the country. I think one country, two system will work if there is a higher parliament that oversees the two systems. Then again, I don't think both sides will want to give up power to that higher parliament.
Mao Zedong hid in a pig's burrow when the Imperial Japanese invaded. The CCP are cowards.
Are you saying the Chinese government gets to claim taiwan, not because of democracy, but because of genetic liniage?
So basically, Africa gets to claims the world as theirs by that logic.
@@dan7564 I'm saying they're both sovereign Chinese territory no matter what political system is in place. You're thinking in term of politics exactly what I was trying to point out. No matter if PRC tries to claim ROC, or ROC tries to claim PRC, or if they join to become PROC or whatever, they are operating in Chinese land (both mainland and Taiwan also includes HK and Macau). The Chinese civil war never ended, so both PRC and ROC governments are operating on Chinese territory. No contracts were ever signed between them to split up mainland and Taiwan island.

If I am Solomon island or other pacific country leader, I will sell one or a few islands to China or other countries if right price is paid. What for you have many these small islands and are poor? @@TheMazuryk I am slightly more concerned about the land lease since 'military usage' seems to be the long term goal =/ For better or for worse; this pandemic that they failed to erase their leak to it had caused an awareness of what is behind the panda mask and unifying people.
Democracy works slower than the autocratic rule but together we will be stronger and our group circle will also be larger than the dictator's bubble Beijing had successfully made over the years.
@@michaelwang6125 Absolutely right. By the way, "the panda mask" is a great metaphor ! I will use it. ;)
Indeed, dictatorial China will use a multiplicity of security-related tools to "secure" the so called new "Silk roads". Here is the perfect alibi to build military bases along these tentacles, and nothing is more easy as Chinese corrupting power is laying a debt trap for borrowing governments.
It is also the case in Central Asia and the former Soviet republics, where Moscow intends to remain the "boss". So, will Beijing abrogate its security interests to Moscow in this region ? In Tajikistan probably not, especially if the Taliban or another "organisation" start to destabilize the country... But one day or another, the panda mask will fall on the Russian dolls... :)
