    Your prints, designs and videos are top notch and thank you for sharing them all. Don't burn yourself out, every other week is fine. for this xmas I printed out 8 snowmen bodies and accessories of various colors and put all the parts in a box and the family and I assembled snowmen on xmas day! it was a great holiday activity and everyone loved the snowman they got to take home! Thanks again for all of your hard work and good luck in 2022! Happy Holidays!

    I’d prefer every other week. Video editing is time consuming. I like the puzzles but I’d prefer to see more of the other designs. Feels weird telling someone my preferences for their free labor.

    • @3DPrinty

      Yes! Cutting back on video editing time is definitely one of my motivations for asking that question.
      I'll be sure to do a mix of projects. While I like designing puzzles, I don't have nearly enough ideas for 2022 to be all puzzles all the time!

    Congratulations on 1 year 3D Printy! That was a ton of empty spools at the end lol. How many miles would that be based on your brand? I look forward to many more years of 3D Printy genius designs and calm, soothing, well produced videos:) I'm super happy to be a part of it when you were just an up and coming youtube star. You give me inspiration. I bought my 3D printer in summer 2020 in hopes of turning it into a business. I am happy to be part of the 3D printing community "cool kids" but my printer just sits and collects dust because I get impatient and frustrated about dialing in the settings/profiles enough to make anything large. It always fails. (When I become more financially stable, I promise to help support your channel!)

    • @3DPrinty
      @3DPrinty  2 года назад +1

      Thank you!
      VERY rough estimate: 18 miles (29km) of filament. This includes a lot of cardboard spools that weren't shown because I recycled them.
      I hope you'll be able to get back into 3D printing! I understand that frustration - my first 3D printer also collected dust for about a year. For some 3D printing hobbyists, tinkering with printers IS the hobby. That's great for them, but I found that initial uphill battle quite frustrating! Fortunately, it's possible to tune things sufficiently so that you won't have to bother with it all that much. The tech is also improving with better filaments, better printing surfaces, readily available auto bed leveling, etc.
      Either way, it's good to have you and anyone interested in the hobby in the community - even if you aren't actively printing!

    What type of PLA do you use? your prints always come out so matte and nice. And i like the "texture" that the prints have, a really nice look.

    • @3DPrinty
      @3DPrinty  2 года назад

      Thanks so much! The filaments I use most are
      Hatchbox (solid colors)
      Protopasta (sparkly stuff)
      Prusament (tolerance-critical mechanical parts)
      Inland (prototypes) and
      Overture (their matte black is super inexpensive)
      The large box in this video used a nicer-than-usual roll of Inland marble PLA. Marble textured PLAs generally do a very good job of hiding printing defects.
      I also print using nozzle temps that are a little cooler than most people - but still within the recommended range shown on the filament roll. For many PLAs, this seems to result in a more matte finish, although I have NOT actually done a side-by-side test to prove that.
      Finally, I print quite slowly - no faster than 50mm/s on perimeters.

    Awesome first year man! I am KniRider on Thingi BTW.
    How about for a project, some design element that incorporates the empty spools! I see a ton of drawers and such floating around and even one that was so cool on kickstarter I think that was using the spools for buildings with inserts that would fit inside and you could use for decoration or table games.
    Every other week would be perfectly fine. Heck, once a month would be fine. Do what you can, when you can and don't over stress yourself.
    Now how about a box that is 290mm deep to almost fill my Ender 5 ;) That would be a bit of filament!

    • @3DPrinty
      @3DPrinty  2 года назад +1

      Hey KniRider! I think you'll like my next project. It will use a couple of those spools... although not nearly enough.

    • @3DPrinty
      @3DPrinty  2 года назад

      You might not know it from the closing credits, but I'm a huge fan of cardboard spools. I'm glad to see more manufacturers have recently announced switching away from the mystery plastic spools that can't be recycled. Spool-less filament is also interesting, but seems less popular.
      I also think more designs should work toward reducing support material use. The vast majority of my plastic waste (except for the occasional failed print) is just the tiny purge line and skirt (or brim).
      Finally, I hope to see more advancements in TRULY compostable filament. If you haven't already seen the recent video by Maker's Muse on the subject, I recommend it! ruclips.net/video/jCsnVp6mEbk/видео.html

      @3DPrinty  2 года назад +1

      My very next project plan just so happens to use empty filament spools... although sadly it won't make much of a dent in my collection.
      Rest assured that all these spools aren't just going in the trash. They will be reused one way or the other. That said, I prefer cardboard spools when I can get them, so that short video actually didn't include a ton of spools that we recycled months ago.

      If I had any wishes/suggestions for future designs, it would be to see designs that relied less (or not at all) on glue, hardware, and magnets. The hardware and magnets in particular aren't readily available at retail (that I know of) and it's a nuisance to wait for shipping :)

    • @3DPrinty
      @3DPrinty  2 года назад

      Thanks so much!

    • @3DPrinty
      @3DPrinty  2 года назад +1

      Good feedback! Some designs will still need glue and/hardware, but I hope to rely on them less or provide more alternative assembly options. For example, the articulated snowman uses a rubber band, but you could also switch that out with a hairband or many other common flexible items.
      Caveat: I love magnets and will always have lots of projects that use them... sorry! I buy my magnets right off Amazon in packs of several hundred. I also tend to only use 2 magnet sizes over and over again - 3x3mm and 3x6mm cylinder magnets. So if you get them for 1 project, you'll have them for others!

    I'm really thinking about getting my own 3d printer now, could you recommend some models and respective tuning tutorials to me? your print quality and knowledge seems incredibly high and I feel you'd have a pretty good idea of what to do.

    • @3DPrinty
      @3DPrinty  2 года назад

      Thanks so much! Print quality is a mix of so many factors.
      TLDR: Check out Maker's Muse, CHEP, and 3D Musketeers.
      I focus on using fairly good filament (not super expensive, but not bargain bin either), somewhat slow printing speeds, and lots of patience with matching nozzle temperatures for each filament.
      I also print mostly in PLA, which is very forgiving, prints at lower temps, and doesn't warp much. I also don't use many filaments with fancy additives. They look cool, but require more effort to tune.
      Inexpensive printers ($275-350), like an Ender 3, can produce very good prints with some work. Slightly more expensive printers will save you effort with nicer extruders, auto bed leveling, and well-tuned printing profiles (like Prusa does with their PrusaSlicer). I personally prefer direct drive printers, but the extra weight means that your quality will suffer more if you print faster.
      The famous 20x20x20mm CHEP Cube (thangs.com/CHEP/CHEP-Cube-21739) is a great place to start with printing tests. Most of my designs are very geometric, so I'm looking for clean sidewalls and consistent cooling around the nozzle. MakersMuse also has some very good "torture" style prints. But I'd save that for a later challenge.
      Someday I'll actually record a video for this. But to be honest, there are lots of videos out there already that I think do a better job with printer tuning and such - especially channels that work to get less expensive printers to turn out prints that rival their pricier alternatives. I mentioned just a couple good ones in the TLDR above. Good luck and welcome to 3D printing!

    One year, what a wild accomplishment, it's inspiring! The amount of improvement in both projects and video editing is impressive!
    For future project ideas, I have a selfish request! I use the (modified) hexagonal rolling container to carry my art supplies all the time, and people always ask about it because of the unique design. Although it's a little unwieldly to carry in a bag or pack due to the diameter. I would love a design of a thinner, segment-divided storage that could hold pens pencils, and markers and fit more comfortably in a shoulder bag.

      Okay, something for the idea list! Ideally it'll have a unique quirk to it so it's not JUST a resized rolling storage bin.

    VoidStar sent me! Glad I found your channel. My previous printer (modified Printrbot Simple Metal) had a board failure a month ago. My wife and her brother convinced me that I needed a new printer instead of repairing the old one. They then asked me what I would get, and then they gave it to me for Christmas! I’m a lucky guy! 👍🏻

      Awesome! And who knows... maybe you'll resurrect that Printrbot eventually and have 2 printers!

    Hi Joe, Thank you for all you work and amazing designs all through 2021! It was a real pleasure to follow your footsteps all year building a lot of fun projects. Looking forward for 2022. Pierre

    I agree. Every other week would be a fine change. This channel and everything you make is a wonderful thing, and if it in anyway helps alleviate creator burn-out as well as gives more time for these amazing creations then I'm completely for it. Alternatively I'd also be more into watching the documentation of the creative process as with the twist lock pumpkin, even if those are more of a side thing, but that's just my 2 cents.

    Amazing big box! I wish the design was ready weeks ago. Congratulations for your first amazing year! Would be nice to see some more tutorial videos with F360 and maybe your thoughts on how to develop a design/mechanism. But anyway, go on like this and have a happy new year!! I wish you, and your family all the best and stay healthy!

      Thanks so much! I definitely underestimated the demand for this iteration of the twist lock boxes!
      Good to know, I plan to sprinkle in a few more tutorial videos next year. Hopefully I can pair them with actual printable projects, so they'll be enjoyable for both designers and printers.
      Happy New Year to you and yours!

    Your designs are staggeringly amazing. Very glad I found your channel. I'm sure you get asked about your printer and settings all the time, because your prints come out jaw-droppingly excellent, but you should really consider doing a video that just talks about little tips and tricks you've picked up along the way (as well as your printer and preferences).

    I've been subscribed since you started and it's been a wonderful year. You are by far my favorite designer, I've printed everyone one of your projects and I can't wait to see what you dream up next. Your videos are funny and engaging and to be honest, I was blown away with your release schedule and didn't know how it was sustainable but it's amazing that you accomplished it. I am totally for an every other week schedule to both give you some rest and to see some bigger projects.
    Thanks again!

      Could be used for generic storage, but I think it's ideal for gifting!
      I stopped using normal wrapping paper 5 years ago and now I use fabric, which is reused when giving gifts to family members and close friends. Same idea here! Of course it is NOT economical or environmentally friendly if you plan to only use it once.

      @@3DPrinty well Filaments are biodegradable. So yes you are saving the environment very slowly 🐌. Lol But looks cool.

      More designs are on the way!
      I like the theme, but I'm sorry to hear it isn't your jam. I already have plans to change the music every year - as a fun way to track what "era" an old episode is from!
      Slogra, who wrote the original theme (as well as the Halloween remix) is already working on the intro for season two! But until that's done, there'll be a few more videos using the season one theme.

    Congrats on the one year! I really enjoy your videos and designs, so I can't wait to see what you put out for us next year!! Also, as somebody who has printed out a handful of your twist lock boxes in various styles, I can tell I really like the updates you made to the spring/gear design. It was cool watching the design grow and evolve the last few months!
