Bending Larger Bonsai Branches with Raffia

- In this video, Jason demonstrates how to bend larger branches on your bonsai trees with the use of raffia. He shows how to prepare raffia and how to properly wrap it around the branches on your bonsai. Raffia works great as added protection for the cambium layer on your branches. This enables you to make more aggressive bends on your bonsai without the fear of killing a branch. Hosted by Jason Chan of Eastern Leaf.

Best raffia demo I have seen. Great detailed presentation.
Heck yes, that video was helpful! I need to bend a pretty thick branch. This is exactly the technique I needed. Thanks!
Thanks for the vid! That’s a smart way to hold your wire roll while wiring! Lol Need to make some critical bends in my big prostrata and my raffia just came in!
This wasn't around when I was into bonsai. I was a Pre-Raffialite.
This joke is so niche, but I love it
Thanks Very much for the info and techniques. I Use burlap rope and electrical tape now, but raffia is a very useful resource. Excellent and intuitive demonstration!
Yes I have plenty of that i shall use that
Very nicely explained 👍 Thank you for sharing..
Very clear demo on how to prepare and use the rafia.
I started with Bonsai, before the wu-flu attack. I had one tree die, from the mites, and another die for some reason. So, needless to say, I'm still a beginner. This Raffia lesson should be the first thing taught in Bonsai care, yet I have never heard of it, or seen anything about it, in my beginner's book, or in any other videos. So, THANK YOU! I really enjoy your videos and have subscribed.
I need to get some of this! For my trees AND for my birds!
Please don't bend your birds 🙏🏼
Thanks for Sharing Dear Friend!
Great raffia video. very pleased with explanation. Thank u very much for sharing knowledge.
Great video! Thank you!
Good video, thanks
I put rafia around it and wired it strongly, towards the end I think I overdid it and I heard the ugly crack.... luckily it is under the raffia and it gets pushed bakc into place, but hopefuly nothing to bad happens.
🌱🌳I have tried this .works well . good video. Keith Australia
So the raffia is like one of those weightlifting belts to keep everything tight and in place and supported?
It stops the wire pulling away the bark when you apply it
Larch has soft bark
I really need to get some wire and do some bending with the juniper i have. Its my first bonsai and im worried ill kill it. I had it in a big pot to fill out the last two years. I just potted it in a nice 10 inch bonsai pot. Not 100 percent happy with its position. Definately a skill that requires alot of practice and study.
Hi, Don't worry, you wont kill it. Just remember this, everything wants to live.
Go for it, if you make a mistake, or just aren't happy with the style, do something else. It's your tree, your experience, so it's gonna be cool no matter what.
this was helpful, thanks :)
wow ... nice work
Excelent video and demonstration. Thank you.
,thanks Jason.
Web site and selection is awsome Wow ...👍

Nice video Sir
Thank you very much for the new knowledge God bless!
very helpfull thanks
Hi. After watching your Video on how to use raffia I used it to bend the trunk on my Brazilian Rain Tree. Can you tell me about how long I need to let it on? Thanks
I wonder how well 45mil pond liner will work =) I got some left over. Might have to try that in one my videos. Thanks Jason.
Nice videos Ben!
@@easternleaf thanks Jason. Dude I've been at home and am running out of videos on youtube to watch. So I appreciate your content.
Will this restrict the branch from getting thicker?
🙏🏽 Thank you
I was wondering how to apply raffa properly, but I have one important thing that you left out. How do you properly add raffa if you haven't had long enough strands.
I ask because my spring project will to trun my mothers massive yard lilac bush into something more beautiful then just a ordinary shrub. For years she been wanting me to improve it and give it a new life.
Awesome tip! Will this work with brittle branches like bougainvillea branches?
now i no what is for ... thank
Check out Love Bonsai. She uses jute cord....
Hey if anyone knows...how much do you use like how thick should the raffia be on the branch..I wrapped one and it's still cracked the bark..and no I did not way over bend or bend too fast. I think I just didn't have enough raffia..what do you think can anyone help me out for next spring for me
Jason. Can you use this technique on a thick Trunk Japanese Maple Trees? My trunk size is 1” to 1 1/2” thick. But it is Straight and going to do Thread grafting this Spring. Thanks. Greg of Ohio
So, roughly how long would that branch take to set? I'm in zone 9a. Thanks.
Great tutorial vid. 1 question. How long will the raffia stay on?
Until you take it off.
that is awesome left a like
I have seen that some people use tape (or raffia tape as they call it) in lieu of raffia, or even on top of the raffia...any thoughts on that Jason? Surely just tape would be faster and cleaner?
I am not a Bonsai expert. I was looking at buying some Raffia. On the site, where I found it, there was an explanation, as to why tape should not be used. Tape has adhesive and might tear bark or branch material and cause other damage. But, you're right that it would be faster. After watching this video, it looks like the Raffia strands are probably stronger than tape, thus better for protecting in a drastic bend.
🌳🌱it found raffia in a craft shop . sells. sowing. beads . cloth. craft paint.ect Keith Australia .
What was the weight/size of the wire?
would this technique works on a 5 inches diameter trunk ?
yes
Does the raffia have to be put on really tight or just right
*tight
what gauge is the wire used?
Can i use electrical tape instead ?
Thick wire! 😯
self amalgamating tape seems to be a better, modern material to use for this procedure instead of raffia.
Can I use cheese cloth and string instead all I got haha pandemic is real out here
Hula skirts from dollar tree.....
Great info, thanks!
