What do you think of springer front end? Should it come back in the M8 era? If you own or have rode one what do you think of it?

Had a 2003 anniversary springer. Absolutely loved it. Traded it in for a 2009 street glide. I went back the next morning and the owner told me he sold it that same night. A customer who knew I owned it bought it as soon as I left the dealer. Offered the new owner a thousand bucks more than he paid for it but he wouldn’t sell it back to me. Regretted it ever since. Ride safe wind brothers. 😢

In my opinion. Harley has one job. Sell the American dream. No American kid grew up with posters of Honda shadows on their bedroom walls. Europeans don’t travel here to ride gold wings through the Rockies. If Harley put an S&S Panhead in a Bobber, or an flh with a springer on it. I’d buy one tomorrow.

Yeah, I hear ya but, your wish will never happen because of EPA regulations.
I'd like to see Harley make a new bike that is truly a "bare bones" motorcycle with the minimum of electronics on it.
But, that will never happen either because those kinds of bikes would not be profitable for H-D.
The MOCO is the same as the automobile companies. Their most profitable units sold are the ones with all the "Bells and Whistles" on them.

Harley Roadking is the last resort of the simplicity of Harley Davidson (no audios, no other entertainment gimmick than its V twin rumbling exhaust). Few of my friends traded his fairing Harley with Roadking. Nothing but simplicity and the pure riding experience of the motorbike itself

I had an Evo heritage Springer, I had that bike for 7 years absolutely loved it, it never gave me any trouble, the only thing I had to do was swap out the shock for a Fornales one, just because if you were on a long run and riding enthusiasticly it would stop damping. Great bike, even took it on a track day!! It had cams bigger Mikuni carb and ignision unit. It was quick in its day. Love to see a springer return it belongs in the Harley line up. Even a WL style bike be a cool bike, foot clutch hand shift.

One of the local dealers here in NC put a springer front end on a Softail Standard, didn’t ride it but it is a sharp looking ride for sure. Harley should build one for their Icon collection for sure.

I own a 1989 FXSTS along with a 1988 FLHS and a 2021 FLHX. The '89 Springer by far gives me the old school ride that us old guys love (68 yo). It's a beautiful bike, punched it out to stock stroke 3 5/8 bore and the paint scheme is OEM. The pride of my fleet. The added maintenance is every 4 or so years the neck bearings need to be replaced and I changed out once the lower rocker spherical bearings. People have come to me and asked how I can ride it, with the assumptions out there that they ride like crap. That always tells me they've never ridden one. It's a ride like no other!!

My 2003 100th Anniversary Heritage Springer Softail is the nicest Bike I've ever owned. The Springer front end looks cool, performs the same as any hydraulic fork bike I've ever owned. The front end is heavy, but it's never much of an issue. The only things I changed on this bike was the came chain tensioner (went with S&S hydraulic kit) 509 Cams and Chrome Switch housings.
My first Harley was a 1979 FXS Low Rider (The first 1340 ShovelHead). It was black with Red pin stripes and tank graphics. I regretted selling that sled. So when I bought my 100th Anniversary Heritage Springer, I had it painted the exact same way as my Low Rider. Some say I ruined the collectability of the 100th Anniversary Model; I disagree. They made 1200 Black 100th Anniversary Editions. Now, there are only 11,999 left. Mine is the only one that looks like it does; and I'm cool with that.

I have a 08 Crossbones with beach bars and the 'tractor' seat and a 16 Road Glide. For trips across the country I use the Road Glide. The Crossbones is my 'local' ride although I did ride it to Daytona once. It is only good for a couple of hours before things start getting uncomfortable in the seat but I like the old school tractor look at it is very comfortable for shorter rides. The biggest difference between the two is how heavy the bike steers. When it is time to turn you put in a LOT more muscle to make that happen on the Crossbones. You don't notice it out on the highway as much (but still big difference) but at low speeds around town it will give you a workout.

1 - The Springer front end is a better suspension than what many people think. Might look antiquated but it is a good system. I remember reading a Kevin Cameron article about it.
2 - I believe I read that H-D sold all the Springer tooling (I forget to whom).
3 - A mono-shock would be nice but the dual shock doesn't take up the, what I call "Real Estate" that the mono-shock takes up in a frame being that there's only so much available space in a bike frame to put stuff. So much more electronics today, its all gotta go somewhere.

Harley-Davidson is kinda getting back to the old HD-1 factory custom program in a way, you can "order" a bike with parts and packages. Albeit they are dealer installed now, years ago you could build a bike online and order it at a dealer choosing black or chrome, different wheels, special pain colors, some was factory installed and some at the dealer.

But, performance and comfort wise in fast tight turns where you're trying to enjoy some aggressive riding, I doubt the springer could keep up.
That's why we need more than one bike in the garage. 😉

I own a 1998 FLSTS as well as a 2001 FXSTS (carb-TC). Like them both but love the FLSTS with the 16 tire best. The FL is just a pleasure to ride, both across town and across country.

36-39 knuc springer had very nice art deco paint, taillights, air box, full fenders, etc.
Current "icon series" are pretty limited numbers, (1750)so they'd sell out.

      @@browngreen933 agreed !
They kinda did the '40 with the Heritage Springer & the 41-46 with the springer classic (I have a 2005),
But the 36-39 paint schemes would be really cool 😉

IMO, a new Goldwing front suspension is somewhat similar to a Springer. Like a springer, the suspension travel is straight up and down, has the spring and shock up top, and the front doesn't dive when braking like fork sliders. My Wing also rides much nicer out front than my Road King.

Theres just something missing from the modern HD springers that the '36 to '48s had. Those ones had more character somehow. The so called "I-beam" springers from the early 30s look like crap too.The Servi Car springers from the 1950s were made on the cheap.A lot of welding on them.

Another great video Gixx, it's too bad the springer front end is gone, and the mousetrap clutch. Maybe because too many want to put a seat on a jet engine and go 0-1000 in 2 seconds. Suspension couldn't handle it.

HD manufacturing moves in the direction that sales dictate. I believe the core of the people buying today want performance wrapped in a high tech modern bike. Sadly the Springer does not fit into that model. Plus I heard a while back that it was just too expensive to manufacture. Still ride my 1st from 89. a 1975 FLH. It’s fast, loud, and nasty.

The only modern softail a springer makes aesthetic sense on is the Standard. Unless they just roll out a mid-line "Springer", price it at $15,999. Or, Fatbob Springer (since the Fatbob is missing from the 2024 lineup) in like the $18,999 slot. In all honesty I've just about ran my course with HD (been with them since 1995). I'm looking hard at Indians. Way more bike for the same money.

I loved the springer but loved the fatboy/heritage look a little more. First Harley was 81 shovelhead FLH. Then got the 95 red/black Badboy mainly because it was affordable at the time. I've got a brand new springer front end in a box. Would love to build a bobber with it. Been thru a lot of different Harleys last was 2015 Road King.

Harley know that the old biker Harley Davidson alienated potential customers. My generation and younger are really starting to love Harley now, and if they want new money. The new lineup is right on par. Harleys were always too expensive. 😂
Which is why I've never bought a new one. But I do use rider to rider financing from them for every used fxr3 and fxdxse I buy. 😂
A m8 Springer would be the only springer I'd buy.

I had an 02 fxsts 88 carb'd with S&S gear drive & cam. So well balanced. I got talked into an 06 RK flhri. Good bike but not a Springer. Had to replace my loss with a 96 evo fxsts. A little rougher than the 02 but it is a great bike. 38k mi. Planning on the lifters & cam/bearing. Also do to. Some health issues I'm awaiting delivery of a 15 Freewheeler 103. The RK is going. 14.6k mi. Don't like the new stuff but Springer's forever! BTW, my old 02 is still running with over 100k & sadly lots of abuse.
