Best rendition of this song by anybody before or after. I don't think he even bothers with any pedals other than his wah-wah. It is all in the hands. Let us give it up for this man's singing as well!
Now this is highly ironic... I know Poppa. He and i played the same NYC and Nj clubs at the same time in the 90's and i had the pleasure of playing bass with him "after hours" in Hoboken and i always knew he was something special... a true devote to the craft. I am so happy that he made it to your channel. Massive respect.
Thank you Fil.... I love the unique videos and very detailed analysis ! Keep the vids coming Fil..... I never miss a night and always see/here something cool... you make it well worth the visit 😎🎸 "ROCK"
Wow!! Never would’ve imagined you would analyze Poppa chubby. Starting in 2000 when I first went to open mic blues nights, they were hosted in New York City by Poppa Chubby. I played on stage with him a whole bunch. Let me tell you, standing anywhere near his twin reverb which was turned almost all the way up was quite an experience. He’s now way bigger (no pun intended!) in Europe.
Fil, the joy you get from music shines through every one of your analysis videos. Always a high point in my day when there is a new one. Thank you for making them!
I have seen him live before and was absolutely impressed with his modern use of arpeggios, in conjunction with a CAGED-type system of playing. He definitely knows how to do things in his own way -- all while maintaining the bones of a song.
FLAMIN HOT!!!!!......I'm sooooo tired of hearin Hendrix......NOT NOT NOT!!!!!Damn was this good......can't wait to blow my windows out crankin this.......sorry to be non PG13.......but this is KICK ASS!!!! Awesome awesome rendition.Fil displays some gold again. Thanks soooo much for sharin.
I have been very impressed with the number of girls and guys who have put in work to learn what works best for them to be able to play at top player's level. They're sure enough out there performing and now with you tube and other Internet platforms we can get exposure to these wonderful artists. Your analysis videos are a big help as well. Thanks Fil, Rock!!
Always learn from your commentary. I would never have noticed the action being SO severe here. I don't know how he plays with such finesse while having to muscle the strings this much - but damn he does it beautifully. Chris Reddan is an awesome drummer too. Used to see these guys at least once per year when I was traveling to NYC on the regular - had a really good keyboard player many of the times, but such a solid three piece band without him. Thanks for covering Popa here - an often un appreciated great artist.
Excellent performance. A guitar player that knows how to use the wah properly. Not just all over it or willy-nilly. With purposeful timing and intensity. This is the kind of performance you can watch over and over again and hear something new every time. Layer upon layer of techniques and sounds to appreciate. Love what you do, Popa. Have a good one, Fil.
Fil, so glad you did a critique of Poppa Chubby. Chris Reddan the drummer was one of my high school students way back when. Chris always sat in the back of the classroom asleep most days. I asked him once after class why he was always sleeping in my class, was I that boring, and he told me Mr. O, I had a gig in Philly last night and didn't get any sleep. Our school is in upstate NY. He always did homework and well on his tests so I had a lot of respect for a 17 year old kid who worked full time and still did his school work. Enjoyed your comments on Chris in particular.
This guy is good, great song!! He is having fun, Glad you reviewed him. He can sing, play. I am glad I watched and listened. I never saw him so I was happy that radio station taped some of his songs, his bass player is incredible. Thanks Fil, Jim
Talking of tone, and the changes he gets with pickup changes, he's got a humbucker at the bridge... And it makes an even greater change :-) Great analysis as usual. I couldn't catch up with all your past videos (yet...), but these videos of yours quickly became one of the things I can't miss opening the day. :-) Thank you, Fil, you ROCK.
Fil, You did a great job on the vocals for this song, so I highly recommend that you do a cover, if you want? Just saying you did a great job singing and angling this video. Popa is a great performer, loved it! Happy Happy Happy Birthday; Happy Happy Happy Birthday, Fil! ❤😎
This band has flown under my radar, thanks a bunch for turning me on to a great group to listen to. If I remember correctly I believe he dropped some of the lyrics towards the end of the song, kept waiting for" going down Mexico way ". I don't remember how it exactly went but some really nice bluesy grooves to listen to!
Some love for Popa Chubby! I have been seeing him for years here in the New York area. Great player, great entertainer, and all around great guy. He always connects with his audience.,
You gave US a present on your own birthday! That's generous. It's so cool to hear a classic being played and sung just differently enough to respect the source, but keep it really interesting and original. Great explanation of the how and why!
had this Hey Joe from Popa discovered a few years ago and I had it on repeat for a couple of weeks. Most colorful, richest, most detailed, still that blows-your-head-off smashing blues guitar of our times. looking forward to listen to Popa's guitar, as he further matures. absolute best !
I never saw, heard of or heard this guitarist before. Very individual, bright & expressive sound. Thank you for the explanation of the high fret action, which must contribute. Popa is brilliant.
3:14 holy crap. You could drive a barge under that string action! That's what you call a REAL man's action. I need cloooose action or I'm dead in the water. Tiny supple fingered chump that I am. hahah He has a cool tone and some good chops (I didn't like the natural minor much in there but whatever....). You caught that natural minor, also. Great ear, man. You are seriously paying attention in all your analysis vids! oooh, Fil doin' a lil singing in this one. hahah yeah, stopping on the 4th is not too uncommon but is unresolved and it's interesting how unresolved can you go and still sound "good". Thx fer the vids!
So cool. I first saw Ted in Saratoga Springs in 95. Walked into what would become his live album from that night. He's barely known here in the States - but plays stadiums in Europe!
Saw Popa at Black Eyed Sally's in Hartford CT many years ago. Great player, great personality and great performer. Oh, and the fried Chard at Sally's was amazing!
Killer guitar player and vocals ! A true journeyman !This is what makes music touch people's hearts , if it dosen't move you , or make you dance , it is not music . This gentleman knows how to touch the strings .
Strange co-incidence - I only discovered Popa a few days ago via RUclips - with this very recording. I was stunned because, as I said in my comment at that time, I never thought I'd ever hear a better version than Jimi's. I'm very much a 'noodler' when it comes to playing guitar but it's impossible to dismiss sheer raw emotion such as Popa pours into this performance. I'm particularly pleased that you added the comment about how his band supported him to perfection, nothing frantic or diva-like, just solid professional backup. Can I also add that it's just as interesting watching your face as you respond to musicians. Definitely a thumbs up.
Famously turned up at a gig in the U.S without guitar. Went straight on to Craigslist bought a $100 Squire Strat and totally nailed the gig. “It’s in the fingers” he said.
Seen this beast from the East August of 2019 in Morro Bay. Phenomenal. Completely badass blues man. Committed to his performance. And he doesn’t give a shit what anyone thinks of his appearance. And if he doesn’t, no one else ought to. He’s all about the music. He’s his own man with his very unique style. No comparison to anyone else.
I've never heard of Popa before but I'm glad he doesn't preach, he plays a mean guitar....or he's mean to that guitar! He has to be to be able to play those notes with the action so high! And I wouldn't have known any of this without you Fil! I love when you break out into song in these analysis videos too! And there's never such a thing as too much Hendrix!!... God Rest his soul...😎🎸✌💘🤘 And I hope you had a wonder-Fil birthday!...🎁🎂🎉

Great pick!! have to mention "Sweet Goddess Of Love and Beer". yeah, bought that disc years ago. Never saw any vids so this is cool! btw, he had a nice Epi sig V with P90s around '00 or so. I'd love to check one out. ROCK!!
Thank you so much for this version of Hey Joe Fil! I am learning how to play this song and love your insight on his playing. When you have the chance, check out the version by Otis Taylor on his Hey Joe album. He uses both electric violin and trumpet. Also, Miguel Montalbon has just released his fantastic version of this classic song. Thanks again!
All this guitar playing terminology Action , chops , shredding .Neck pick up , bridge pick up . I am learning. I watched Guitar Heroes at the BBC tonight . Oh, Happy Birthday. Aries man . 😉 xx
OLD Beast from the East. NYC man. I just love his style. Hardcore r&r . The action is high like in the 50's and 60's. Takes a bit of work to get it down but it improves your playing and lets you lash out on those strings to get that Incredible tone. Watch his right hand action. And the notes are more defined as when you release the string it pops right back up. His slide work is excellent also. Hear him do "Some Where Over the Rainbow"
Friends of mine struck up a conversation with him in an elevator at a hotel in Germany, they had no idea who he was but he gave them tickets to that evenings show, they were astounded and had a blast. Great choice!
Ahhh....Love Popa Chubby! He’s awesome! Great rendition of Hey Joe..so brilliant how adds his own dynamics to this epic song with his guitar and vocals! Yeah really high action...Malmsteen plays with a high action as well! Excellent Fil! Cheers Mario!😀🤘🤘

Amazing, informative and incredibly observant review of a favourite by the Chubby fellow. He’s pretty darn special and as you say very well supported. Must be hard on a drummer when Popa says ‘scuse me while I kiss the sky and you have to keep pace.

I've not herd of Popa Chubby, I am familiar with the song "Hey Joe" herd it played slow and fast my favorite slow version by the (Music Machine) favorite fast version the (Leaves) Popa Chubby version is unique. great analysis and break down again. perhaps one day you'll delight us with your version of "Hey Joe" ? Hope you had a great Birthday! Fil,
Popa chubby can play for sure, have one of his signature P-90 flying Vs in a box somewhere, Fil you always point great things about artist, Jeff in LA USA
oh yes Popa Chubby have a couple of his albums.i have a wide taste of music ,wide room of albums ,45s cds ,vinyls ,from 50s to some now ,some i just discovered in the last couple of years and surprised i dig them ,and Muse is the very one. but like Popa.
Again another great player that I've ever heard of. Not a lot of effects going on. Not a lot of distortion either. Or so it seems to me. Great analysis Fil! Enjoyed it as usual. Got rained out on the golf course. I'll see what Fil has been up to!
Popa Chubby has to be one of the best Blues/Rock Players alive today. Just saw him last month in a super small venue (100 people), he played with evenmore intensity than here for about 2.5 hours nonstop! Also one of the nicest people you will meet - if he is in town go!!!!!
Best rendition of this song by anybody before or after. I don't think he even bothers with any pedals other than his wah-wah. It is all in the hands. Let us give it up for this man's singing as well!
Chubby is LEGIT !! Guy is a bad ass blues guitarist

Another thing to thank Hendrix for, is he gave us some great guitar songs, for anyone great enough to improvise off of.
He didn't write this song or many of the others you might know he just played them differently than they had been played before.
@@mbsnyderc many others is a bit of a stretch as Jimi mainly played his own songs apart from a few covers. Besides Jimi always made them his songs.

I like your channel, nice job
oh yes Popa Chubby have a couple of his albums.i have a wide taste of music ,wide room of albums ,45s cds ,vinyls ,from 50s to some now ,some i just discovered in the last couple of years and surprised i dig them ,and Muse is the very one. but like Popa.
Looks like guy-on-bass is playing a Peavey...just got a partial of the pickguard. Power trios have a special place in my heart.
You do not see many unique blues players these days:)
Wicked cover, nicely done. Listen to those bass runs oh ya...
Great playing
Seems like I mentioned Popa Chubby once...this is the same track I first watched. He's got pipes and jams!
Jimi is my housegod. One of the best i heard. Very god. In Sweden we have Clas Yngström. I have playd with him.
lol, Hey Fil say something :) Yeah, he is worth the watch, a passionate guy, some fun phrasing.
Again another great player that I've ever heard of. Not a lot of effects going on. Not a lot of distortion either. Or so it seems to me. Great analysis Fil! Enjoyed it as usual. Got rained out on the golf course. I'll see what Fil has been up to!
😂🤘
I've heard many versions of this song over the years including some Popa Chubby live performances like this one. I think he does it best.
Check out his RUclips vid of his performance of “Hey Joe” from Callahan’s Music Hall. Personally, I like that performance better.
Popa Chubby has to be one of the best Blues/Rock Players alive today. Just saw him last month in a super small venue (100 people), he played with evenmore intensity than here for about 2.5 hours nonstop! Also one of the nicest people you will meet - if he is in town go!!!!!
Cool!
