Bluegrass guys can definitely tear it up. I remember an episode of The Andy Griffith Show where they had Earl Scruggs as a guest musician where he proceeded to rip some stuff on a banjo and then hit some harmonics and then - bend the neck. Later on it was considered 'modern' when Randy Rhoads (RIP) and others used to do it on Les Paul's with stacks and this was back in the Fifties. You got a great channel.

Chet Atkins very legendary, but Vince Gill has ben guitar guy I've seen in several spots where he just hammers it, nails that picking style. Plus he has a great voice. Dude can play though.

Awesome review! Nothing like going to a great Bluegrass festival and hearing them live!! Have had the pleasure of seeing Earl, Doc, and the greats! 👍👍👍
BLUEGRASS RULES!!! One of the things I really love about Bluegrass is that everyone is welcome to "set a spell and scrub off a few tunes". The more, the merrier and EVERYONE is encouraged to take a lead turn! Technical note here. Bluegrass music has no 'lead' parts...in Bluegrass, we take 'breaks'. Very democratic type of music, and egos must be left at the door! Earl Scruggs is a perfect example of this. The man is a legend, and will surely be remembered as one of the great musicians of the 20th century, and he really didn't care who he was playing with, or what they were playing (Referring to that "Sunshine of Your Love" lick! LOL), or even how good you were, with Earl, if you loved to play, that was good enough for him. I don't say this just because I pick banjo, and am a bit biased (Which, of course, I am), because just about anyone who knew him would agree with me.
Thank you so much for showing this great performance by these legends! Just saw Michael Katon at a coffee house, and was blown away by his incredible slide playing . He plays delta boogie music from hell, and actually lives in Hell (Michigan). Working on his 18th album at his home studio, and plays mostly in Europe. His concert footage is fantastic.Check him out!
Vince Gill plays nearly every Monday at a club here in Nashville called 3rd and Lindley with a Western Swing group called The Time Jumpers. I've gotten to see them a time or two, and while you might think it could turn into the Viince Gill show, it doesn't. I was also fortunate enough to work with Randy Scruggs back in the mid-80s. I was sorry to hear that he passed away. I got to see his daughter play at a festival a few weeks ago, and she's pretty good.
Glen Harness, you’re right. Vince is a humble guy who just loves to jam. He will back off for anyone he is on the stage with. I have watched him perform many times (even live) and I have never seen him hog the spotlight!
old Vinny a little busy right now rocking with the Eagles. also I believe in September he's going to be over there in Dallas Texas at Eric Clapton's yet another awesome all star crossroads concert we get . Him and Vinny became friends later on in life.
That's a Gibson Advanced Jumbo (AJ) Randi plays (on the right in my pic)... great guitar with a very interesting story over the years (mine is a reissue made in 1991) several years later they began production models after more than 80 years, but slow sales have them back to Custom Shop orders only today...
Incredible analysis. Yes you could’ve talked another hour non-stop, there was that much talent on stage. But you said quite a bit in such a short time. Thank you for your superior on the fly word selection ability. You presented so much information that my mind was buzzing. I love it when these pickers have these sessions. I think someday the future will look into the past and marvel at the sheer amount of stellar picking artistry that we somewhat take for granted. I listen to the “new” forms of the different music genres and I can already tell there’s a degradation of the keen guitar playing that we’ve had from say 1950 until maybe five years ago. There are still master players, but not as deep in numbers as we’ve known. I could be wrong.
I saw Randy Scruggs live (with The Earl Scruggs Revue) and he was stunning. The only guitar player I have heard who could get electric guitar sounds from an acoustic.
Takes me back....my Grandpa was a Tennesse boy who played the banjo. My Dad played the mandolin. They made some good music. Not on this level but a lot of fun. Thanks Fil
Top talent of country artists! Heard about all of them thru the years. Anita Cochran, don't know about her, but I love what she was playing on the Telecaster! Have to check out her discography! Thanks! Great showcase of musicians!
she's been off the scene for a little while after her about with breast cancer but she's on the mend since last year.. when she moved to Nashville in 1997 there along with Terri Clark and a few other she really lit up the women pickers stage
To quote, "Tommy Emmanuel, John Knowles, and Steve Wariner share the distinction of being Certified Guitar Players (CGPs), along with the late Jerry Reed and Atkins’ longtime guitar partner Paul Yandell, who was invited into the group by Atkins’ daughter Merle after her father’s death in 2001".
Another awesome analysis vid! If you ever get the time, please listen to "More Than Just This Song," by Brad Paisley & Steve Wariner. Brad sings about his Grandfather, and Steve sings about "Mr. Guitar" (Chet Atkins). The song gives them credit for being the major influence in their guitar endeavors...and how much more they owe them "than just this song."
It's like the ALL-STARS meet the HALL OF FAMERS at the PRO-BOWL for the GREATEST OF ALL TIME! MY GOD! The only ones who appear to be missing are Roy Clark and Jesus of Nazareth! SIDE NOTE: How surreal is it to see Don Was (of all people) then quote "Sunshine of Your Love"? WOW!
It sounded to me that Chet Atkins had an audio problem it wasn't that he was low in the mix well he was low in the mix before they centered on him but it took a few good 5 seconds before they got the sound right on him play it back to yourself you can hear it pretty clearly
One day there's gonna be some sharp young guy with a very well rounded knowledge of music doin an analysis video of legendary players and yer gonna be one of those players.. Yer The Man🤘 ROCK
such a shame we just lost Randy last year too..one of my favorite Tunes of his from 1997 few years after this is called passing through with Joan Osborne on it too a kick-ass song. God's everybody knows old Vince now is about 20 pounds heavier and he's out there touring with the Eagles as add on member right now.
My first concert movie was "Mad Dogs and Englishmen" with Joe Cocker and Leon Russell, along with many other fine musicians such as Carl Radle (bass), Chris Stainton (keys), Jim Gordon (drums), Jim Keltner (drums), Bobby Keys, Sax), Jim Price (Trumpet), Rita Coolidge (vocals), among many others.
a lot of these guys were invited to at least one (some multiple) of Eric Claptons "Crossroads Guitar Festivals" started 20 years ago if you get the chance, you should watch all of the DVD's, they are incredible shows with all the top guitar players of multiple genres. And multiple eras I think there's a new one some time this year back in Dallas, where Eric held the very first one in 1999

@@truckerkevthepaidtourist Thanks for the info! Appreciate it!
They were picking & you were grinning. 👍👍
I absolutely love your videos! This is a Favorite!
Lot of underrated pickers here!
Anybody gonna comment about the "Manscaped" commercial? Surprised not to see Albert Lee; maybe he had a gig somewhere else.
Fil,, the one song I'm dying here you cover is Al Stewart's Year of the Cat! Perfect for your voice and you have the guitar skills!
Love this analysis Sir Fil! Would love for you to do a video of Steve Wariner, such a great player.
Excellent!
Good stuff Fil I like the bluegrass music. Put more of it in.
such a shame we just lost Randy last year too..one of my favorite Tunes of his from 1997 few years after this is called passing through with Joan Osborne on it too a kick-ass song. God's everybody knows old Vince now is about 20 pounds heavier and he's out there touring with the Eagles as add on member right now.
This is awesome! Can you imagine the collectors value on those documented instruments?
Leon played guitar with Joe Cocker before he was joe's keyboard player . Leon was such a great song writer , that his somgs would become standards .
Dave Brown Yes indeed. He had great commercial success in the 70s and who could forget Youngblood from the Bangladesh Concert? A legend in my world.
My first concert movie was "Mad Dogs and Englishmen" with Joe Cocker and Leon Russell, along with many other fine musicians such as Carl Radle (bass), Chris Stainton (keys), Jim Gordon (drums), Jim Keltner (drums), Bobby Keys, Sax), Jim Price (Trumpet), Rita Coolidge (vocals), among many others.
a lot of these guys were invited to at least one (some multiple) of Eric Claptons "Crossroads Guitar Festivals"
started 20 years ago
if you get the chance, you should watch all of the DVD's, they are incredible shows with all the top guitar players of multiple genres.
And multiple eras
I think there's a new one some time this year back in Dallas, where Eric held the very first one in 1999
Very exceptional!!!
OLD SCHOOL
How about one on Nokie Edwards of The Ventures ?
Ohmygosh legends! To see Earl with Randy there is amazing! Vince Gill is fantastic and is currently doing a great job with the eagles, RIP Glen Frye. Fil have you ever looked at Ricky Scaggs?
