- Edwin Starr (born Charles Edwin Hatcher; January 21, 1942 - April 2, 2003) was an American singer and songwriter. Starr was famous for his Norman Whitfield-produced Motown singles of the 1970s, most notably the number-one hit "War".
Starr was born in Nashville and raised in Ohio, and later lived in Detroit while singing for Ric-Tic and Motown Records. He was backed by the band that would become known as "Black Merda". Hawkins and Veasey of the group played on most of his early hits on the Ric Tic Label. Starr's songs "25 Miles" and "Stop the War Now" were also major successes, in 1969 and 1971 respectively. In the 1970s Starr's base shifted to the United Kingdom, where he continued to produce music, and resided until his death.

Was lucky enough to get dragged to an Edwin Starr concert in the early 90s by
Older friends. Full brass section ,a saxophonist that came from heaven and Edwin Starr . ,highlight was the saxophonist walking through the theatre ,up one flight of stairs separating the audience , across the back of the theatre and down another flight of stairs in full view and in full spotlight free styling SOLO to "eye to eye contact " while the band jammed along ( the walk around the theatre was completely unplanned ) Edwin sat on stage and loving it . Dropping the odd vocal in ,the odd AH AH , . EYE TO EYE....and the sound crew at the theatre smashed it .
The song lasted 15 minutes easy.afterwards Edwin said they had this new radio microphone on the saxophone and in rehearsal the sax player was playing with the sound technicians to find any " dead spots " onstage ..he walked.offstage free styling to.contact and kept walking and walking walking ..with no.dead spots...Edwin said let's have some fun with this new technology tonight , not knowing the saxophonist would do a full tour of the theatre...
The roof came off the theatre that night .
