- Why I sold my Suzuki VSTROM 1050. Last ride. New bike reveal. Which motorcycle? Which motorbike? I bought my first Harley Davidson.
The Suzuki VSTROM 1050 had a few issues. It was a little bit tall. I could live with it for a while but after I went up and down a few hills in Cumbria I realised I needed a change.
The seat on the Suzuki VSTROM is also a factor. It’s not great. The exhaust is not great. I did have the option of replacing them both but that would have cost quite a bit of money and as I don’t tend to keep bikes for that long I thought that would have been a waste.
Instead I decided to buy a Harley Davidson. I know they are not to everyone’s taste but I just love them. I challenge anyone to ride one and tell me they don’t feel awesome. I will be reviewing it in my video so make sure you come back. Hit Subscribe. 😘😘😘

I bought 1050xt 3 years ago and still enjoy riding it. My height is 171cm. Cheers from S.Korea
I always enjoyed riding mine. It was a brilliant bike. Never had an issue. Just a little bit tall.
The reality is, you don't have to flat foot both feet on the bike to hold it. You can just flat one foot and leave second one on a peg, leaning the bike towards you so you can reach the ground with one foot. Of course, your body has to be tilted sideways from seat do do it.
The wind will not tip the bike over in this configuration. Unless it's a hurricane which tips over a cars of course.
And in the end of the day, it's not the sort of bikes that are highly sensitive for being dropped from time to time.
FWIW , and it may not be worth anything. But my wife has a similar problem. She is only 5' 3" (63 inches or about 160cm). But when she started riding 3 years at 65 years of age she fell in love with the VStrom 650 (I have 2018 VSttom 1000xt). But she was very concerned she would drop the bike because of her very short legs. So I took an old pair of boots and had 2 work boot vibrum soles glued to the existing soles of her old riding boots. Effectively turning them into the "Elevator Shoes= of 30 years ago.
It worked remarkably well. We just completed an almost 3,800 mile 13 day trip and she had zero issues. They are not a perfect replacement for long legs, but they are a very good one.
Anyhow sir, it is only a suggestion if you ever look at a tall motorcycle again. It is cheap way to try and solve a problem. The soles, I believe, cost me US$30. The cobbler charged around the same. I know 2 other people; one man and one woman who have tried my approach. It has worked in both cases. The hardest part was was learning to walk after your legs are suddenly 5-6cm longer and adjusting clutch lever.
Maybe, it will work for you. Just a thought.
Enjoy your new ride.
Apprehensive is the word I think you're looking for. Takes a little enjoyment out of your ride if you have worries or concerns about simply stopping.
That’s exactly right. I had days were I didn’t want to take it out and that’s wrong. I ride for the enjoyment and once that creeps in it’s over. Better to change than leave it gathering dust and not being used much.
Erm… I wasn’t expecting that. I thought it was a joke reveal and the real bike would be behind it 😃. Nothing against Harleys. It’s definitely a lifestyle bike. Belt drives are great for the lack of maintenance. I think you will enjoy it. My wife appreciates the sissy bars as well. Ideally we should all have 5 bikes each depending on our mood.😀
5 bikes would be nice. Don’t think the mrs would let me get away with that though. 😂. I’m loving the Harley so far.
5 or more like jay leno if money or space was not a problem
Did you lower the bike by swapping out the suspension links (dog bones)? This was a cheap mod and lowered the seat 3cm.
No I didn’t. I thought about it but 3cm wouldn’t have been enough.
Fellow short arse here, I’m 5’9" with a 29” inseam. I had an Africa Twin but quickly came to the realisation that it was too big for me (only dropped it once though).
PS Would be great if you could give some details about your new bike (make and model)
I should have a review on the new bike on my channel by Wednesday. It’s a Harley Davidson XL 883 Iron
@GILLYBIKES oh wow. you took a huge step backwards IMO but hey... you do you! I 😊
I change every year. Variety is the spice of life and all that.
Low seat option, logger boots with thick sole and heel, lowering links. Could have kept it.
I know. I regret selling it. 🥹
I assume you thought about it but there is a low seat that's 30 mm well ... lower. Wouldn't that have been enough ?
There wasn’t a low seat option at the time. The only thing I could have done was messed with the suspension and I didn’t fancy that.
That Harley is so loud. Looks awesome as well.
Love that new bike 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
It sounds like a beast as well. Make sure you come back for the review in a few days.
Vstrom is the Best bike I ever owned 👌btw you went from a vstrom to a harley I went the other way lol
I do regret it. I wish I could have kept both
I ditched a low rider for my v strom
They are great bikes. I miss my vstrom.
@@GillyBikes its nice to have both
Me too....love mine
Good luck with the little tank. You’ll be stopping more than anyone else. But it is a comfie bike.
Thanks. I’m planning to get a bigger tank so hopefully I should be ok. Just slower than everyone else. 😂
@@GillyBikes not necessarily slower. Thats a 1200 not the 800 as far as I understood. Loads of torque and it will keep up. If its the 800 you won’t be a slouch either.
I understand what you mean about not flat footing and not feeling safe. Its an expensive bike to drop with no crash bars on it. love the new bike. very loud ha ha.
Yes laaaaad. Your next bike has to be a Harley. 🥳
It's the least expensive of all adventure bikes on the market of little more than half a price of top models.
It has a crash bars cage as an option.
It has really cheap spare parts and maintenance cost.
So no tragedy if you drop it, especially offroad and on standstill. These bikes are naturally meant to be dropped from time to time. That's the essential nature of adventure off-road riding.
That’s all true. I might re-visit adventure bikes at some point but it will have to have a slightly lower seat
@@GillyBikes this particular model has a lower seat option (3 cm lower which is a lot!). If you are not tall, why not using it?
The main benefit of such bikes - they are tolerable for road quality. I can go anywhere you want and don't give a shit if road there is paved or not or how deep are the potholes there.
On the one I had you couldn’t change the seat hight. The only way to do it was change the suspension and I thought that was to much of a faff.
How tall are you?
I believe you can buy a low seat?...
You can for the XT but not the standard one. I could have messed with / lowered the suspension but not sure if that would have effected the warranty so never bothered
I hate that adventure bikes are so tall.
So do my legs. 😂
easily lowered suspension
I know. I think it was just an excuse to have a change.
Why why why…
I’m full of regret now. I should never have sold that bike 😭
@@GillyBikes made same mistake many times myself.. love my 1050xt
You should get one 😂
I do like the look of the new DE so who knows. Maybe one day.
What..? 🤔🙄🙄🤔
No point changing for the same thing. Nice to experience different things. 😎
Did you mention your height?
lol shrimp can't touch ground
Bit heightest. I could touch the ground. Tip toes count. We can’t all be giants.
