    Great review
I recently bought one as a commuter, very pleased, ride a lot of other bikes all year round. The headlight from factory needs moving up a touch,70 on dip is then no problem.
Pegs ,do catch you out, need to just places legs further apart, not noticeable then.
Performance wise , try riding it flat out through gears everywhere, it has plenty of Performance for normal or spirited riding on a daily basis. Handling wise its very neutral and forgiving, pleasure to ride.
Screen is fine and works well.
For value ,its great compared to most adv bikes. For off road capability, best to choose a dirt orientated type. One of the reasons for my purchase is that its reliability history is excellent and proven motor.
Not like some of other issues I've had with top other premium brands.
Overall its a underrated motorcycle as most now want the latest 150+bhp with electric gadget loaded gizmos that don't get used.
The dash is a big improvement on the older models, enough information to keep most happy.
    Overall the bike is excellent.

Thanks for another great real-world review. This is why I’ve come to rely on TMF so much. Here in the US, “reviews” consist of a magazine being delivered the bike for a one day test and them riding it on the track. It’s so refreshing to get practical info from your reviews. I know you call yourself “just n enthusiast” but for those of us that spend our own money on bikes we'll have for many years, your reviews are so much more useful.

Great review as always. I actually quite like the LCD display. TFT screens may look nice, but is costs money and I'm not riding a bike to play with all the technology. I want to enjoy the ride and the scenery and only need to see speed, gear and fuel as I travel.

Great review buddy! I've got a 1050xt and all yr points are spot on.. Pegs banging into my legs is my biggest negative but aside from that it's a great bike, I bought it brand new (pre reg) for £9999 which I think is a bargain.. I know the looks are diversive but I think it looks great (especially in the orange/white colour that I have!) The LCD screen looks like an old casio watch but it's functional and most importantly (for me!) easy to use.. There's alot of Vstrom "bashers " on RUclips and it's good to see that you AND Chopsy see the bike for what it is.. A well priced, great everyday bike 👍👍👍

A very comprehensive and fair review, TMF. I've had both the 650 and the 1000, loved them both. It's easy to dismiss them - as I did for years based on lazy moto-journo pigeon-holing them as boring, but I have to say it was a revelation when I actually rode and owned them. Cheers.

Very well done TMF, Great review of the V-Strom 1050 XT.
I'm a bit biased though as I have a 1050 XT Tour as my everyday commuter/hack and its been superb.
As for night time riding? (I do quite a lot as a shift worker) the headlight can easily be adjusted by loosening one 13 mm bolt below the fairing (Its fully visible below the lights sealed unit and has a handy socket shaped cut out, look directly upwards above the front mudguard) I've raised mine just by 2 mm and it projects the light beam about 6-8 m further forward and spreads it out (without glaring into oncoming drivers faces) thus no need to have full beam on all the time, then when you do use full beam it really does light the way which is very handy for dodging the suicidal Badger, Deer and Fox population in Epping forest on my rides to/from work in the early hours.
After 6 months of ownership covering about 6500 miles the seat pad is well and truly bedded in and is 500 mile a day comfy (as tested on a few summer tours) in all weathers.
I can honestly say its one of the best all-round motorbikes I've ever owned

Nice to see Suzuki producing some competitive bikes again. It seems like they've been off the pace for a few years. I really like the looks of this bike although I know, much as with the "Dr Big" of the early 90's, the looks divide opinion. It looks great in that colour scheme.
Why is it, when manufacturers are obsessed with fitting all sorts of pointless frippery to bikes nowadays, they can't do something as cheap and practical as fit an L shaped valve on the tyres. Personally, I'd find that more useful in the real world than having a TFT the size of my TV, phone connectivity or a variety electronic settings I never touch.

I don’t think is under rated on ADV “world”, at least the last generations. It’s under rated on RUclips and generalist motorcycle social media. If you listen to some dedicated ADV podcasts, with long months long tours, you will perceive that this bike is highly rated. Hardcore ADV riders are more pragmatic, they want the most bang for the buck, to be more time on the road.
Having said this, this one would not be my first choice. It’s a pain to handle when stoped, and when it falls a 230kg ADV bike, I only can imagine heavier bikes…this one reviewed is more less the weight I mentioned, but doesn’t have, luggage, crash bars, auxiliary lights..etc
For me this channel is the best user review channel

Nice review Mr Flyer, your last comments reminded me that way back in the 1980's(?) Suzuki used the motto "Born to be Wild, Suzuki" accompanied by the Steppenwolf music (just use your imagination a bit), these days Suzuki seem to have gone more with the Born to be Mild approach to everything they make, including their 4 wheeled vehicles, still, they have always been mechanically reliable and functional, so I guess it isn't that important, it just brought back some memories, so thanks for that.

I got mine delivered 4 days back in the exact same colour and also an XT variant. Love the bike, one thing that really impressed me is the Suzuki low rpm assist. If in heavy town traffic you can literally leave it in second gear without using the throttle and it wouldn't stall but tick over without worrying about the engine dying on you. The electronics are all practical and works with minimal switches to operate them plus the fact you do not have to search through the menu. An all rounder for me like a sewing machine that just chugs on and on! I did 682 km on my first ride. Seat was ok too.
Great detailed review and very practical. Thanks

Great review. Love my 1050xt. On the headlights - first thing to do when buying is to adjust the headlight. Once you get it aligned it's very good on dipped or full. Truly brilliant bike, agree though the valves are a pain to get to! Equally the wheel design, looks pretty, pain in the ass to clean! If it helps anyone, I bought the Bumot panniers, cheaper than OEM & much nicer IMHO. Keep the reviews coming Andy!

Another good review. I have the xt. All valid points. I actually find the seat hard and gets uncomfortable after 1.5-2 hrs. Puig screen makes a massive difference if you are a taller rider. I find the back pegs get in the way when putting on centre stand. Little things. I did a lot of research before buying the vstrom. I wanted a road biased adv bike and kept coming back to the vstrom. No regrets. 👍 TMF

Spot on review Andy and the bloopers always raise a smile! Perhaps on the bikes popular for two up touring you could ask the supplier to send with a top box if possible? Had my base model 1050 for just over a year and just over 6k on the mileage. Great bike for the money although I feel there’s a beast of a motor in there struggling to get out, it’s almost like it’s a bit stifled. The handling is great now I’ve had it re sprung with hyperpro springs front and rear to suit my heftyness, all in all very happy with mine, I can see it being one of those old reliable bikes while faster more exotic bikes come and go……..

Always liked Suzuki’s they are reliable ,do what it says on the tin & priced competitively .It looks like Suzuki are trying to recapture a bit of the old Katana styling with the shape of this new large V strom .I actually like it .Straight tyre valves fitted to wheels with bacon slicer sized double discs are no problem I always carry an angled tyre valve adapter for such purposes . I reckon I prefer the display screen on my little DL 250 We Strom to the one fitted on the new large model .If I was in the market for a large capacity adventure tourer I would defiantly put this along side the African twin & would be happy with either ..Excellent honest review Mr Flyer 👍

Wonderful and I think, very accurate review. Just bought a lightly used 2021 Vstrom 1050XT adventure and might be the finest bike I've ever owned. Only thing I did to improve the experience is fine tune the suspension to my liking...installed heated grips...installed Givi AirFlow 2 piece windscreen setup. The stock screen was pretty dreadful and my Shoei helmet didn't dampen any of the buffeting or noise. The Givi solved all of it. One of the finest bikes in the world, I think. Hello from southern Pennsylvania.

Excellent review. I have a '18 DL1000XT, and you hit upon some good points. The air valves on the tires, especially the rear does make it a tight fit. The foot pegs are right where your put down your feet. The Givi Airflow windshield really helps with the buffeting. I do really enjoy my DL1000 - it is a wonder work horse, even with the niggles I have grown very close to it.

For the money it has to be up there in my opinion, yes it's not a GS/KTM but it does everything it should and boy does it eat up the motorway miles. Fully loaded with panniers, top box and over 70 litres of roll bags it handles like a dream.

I have one, in the orange and white. I live in Denver and the bike is just great. Bought new in July. I commute daily and then go out on a weekend with my wife on the pillion, I have fitted a back rest/rear rack, makes the wife happy. We ride some of the Jeep trails up in the Rocky Mountains as well as riding the highways. I’ve had many, many Motorcycles over the last 40 years and I have to say Suzuki have done a great job, comfort, fast enough and practical, and half the price of a GS.traded in a super tenere, this is a better bike, shaft drive would have been nice, but, in Colorado, it just does not rain, so, no issues.

I definitely hit the like button on this one! Does bike have good power or does it seem sluggish like the bike is too heavy during acceleration?

Another great review covering both the Good and the Bad. Talking about conspicuity what you you said makes perfect sense. In fact it's something I expected to be extremely effective, when I bought my Kawasaki ZZR 1400. With its wide front fairing, running lights and dipped headlights, the practically luminous Kawasaki green, add to that my neon highlighted riding suit and helmet, I never imagined pull outs would ever be a problem again. Alas to be seen by other drivers they need to care and look, two qualities which seem increasingly more absent. I think they think it's a big scooter, they certainly scoot out in front of me far more than any bike I've ever owned 🤔😵😫

As an owner, I recognize my bike with all its characteristics, and you did it justice with that review. Nice job, and looks are subjective. I like my yellow bird very much, because it is unique between all the GS.
I`m 6 ft tall and have the wind screen in its lowest setting. Windprotection is ok and the it is the quietest setting for me and the helmet I`m wearing. Heated grips are expensive and according to my dealer you have to chosse the factory ones, because of the ride by wire system. Others won`t fit. Besides that minor niggles its a Suzuki. Doing it`s job pretty well without any mishaps and breakdowns.

Having lived with a 2006 vstrom 650 since 2009 (!), I can honestly say the 'unexciting-ness' is one of my favorite features (well, the motor is kinda fun to wring it's neck relentlessly and without mercy).....it's really quite an endearing quality that preserves the blemish free status of my drivers license!!!!! I keep saying that I'll get a new bike when this one wears out, or becomes unreliable, but it just keeps on eating up miles.....

Thanks for another full on, practical review. Long term 'owner' reviews are what I seek out in order to give a 'lived with', true critique, and your clips never miss the mark. I would only disagree on one point: design aesthetics. I like the look very much, and when compared to the Alien space bugs and Decepticon designs of just about everything else, the ol' Strom still looks like a motorcycle. The new Norden is probably the best looking bike rolling out now (kudos to Husq for going big, round, hi-tec headlight and integrated aux lights), while the Guzzi TT85 has it all to absolute perfection... except that front end like a google-eyed Pelican! Why Guzzi? ... Thanks again, sir!

I've had one of these for a few months now. Handles great and very stable in crosswinds. Please try it with the TC off as it makes a very real difference to the acceleration, slightly annoying 'TC' light on the dash which you soon learn to ignore. You're correct about the peg position they get in the way especially at the lights but having said that could they have put them anywhere else? I got mine for £9900 brand new which feels like a bargain. I have the fully yellow one for me it's the 1980's TS250X that I couldn't afford at the time. Good review.

Don't forget that it emulates the DR BIG from the 80's. That is possibly why the dash has a retro feel? I think it's a great looking bike especially in the orange and white like the original DR BIG but then I am biased being an owner of the DR BIG. It's does seem to be a good allrounder that I imagine will be extremely dependable. Not every bike has to have 180bhp and a billion gadgets. Thanks for the review and keep them coming 👍

Bulletproof, decent design, excellent value and hubris free; not bad indicators for a motorcycle. However, using those same indicators, I’d find it hard to choose between the latest version and a previous model. Plus, many a barely used ‘Strom is sold fully farkled. Hard to beat.

  • @gregmatty6393
    @gregmatty6393 2 года назад +1

I appreciate the review of the new V-Strom 1050 and as we typically have similar thoughts on bikes I was curious to see what you thought. I agree on the cheap LCD display and hard seat but don't agree the riding position is as sporty as you noticed. When I think of a sporty position I think of the BMR R1250RT which is not only sporty (read cramped) but the boxer engine makes placing your feet forward nigh impossible. I'd like a dedicated road touring bike but the RT won't work and the Goldwing is just a bit too expensive. And while you may not like the right hand activation button for the cruise control, remember that is only to activate the cruise control. To actually set or adjust speed you use the left hand as you prefer. I had to install the Suzuki heated grips on my bike but they work well even if the install took a few hours. Fuel range looks to be about 250 miles which is about the same as my 2018 GS.
Powerwise I think the V-Strom 1050 is very strong. It is not as powerful as the 2018 R1200GS I sold to buy the V-Strom. And yes you read that right I sold a GS to buy the V-Strom. My 2018 R1200GS had spokes on the rear wheel loosen while touring Europe; twice. By the time I returned to Washington State (NW of the US, not our miserable political capitol) a spoke was missing and there was a centimeter of free play in the wheel. At this time I had about 6,000 miles on the odometer and the camshafts had worn out. I had to fight several dealers to get them to pull a valve cover on the GS to discover this somewhat common problem. If you go to my page (I am not trying to get hits ) you can click on sound files of before and after to hear what I am referring to. The GS has since been repaired but I just did not trust it on any more long distance trips.
    Before repair: ruclips.net/video/SeELzPcZjLE/видео.html
So while I also agree it is a budget ADV bike (but as capable on gravel or unimproved roads as any other) I suspect mine will be much more reliable than the GS I sold. Ironically, the US market is super hot for used bikes and sold the GS for enough money to buy the V-Strom outright and outfit it with a full luggage suite. Looks are subjective but I bet if you could have landed one with the North American Color Scheme of Glass Blaze Orange you would like the appearance much more. suzukicycles.com/adventure/2020/v-strom-1050xt
    www.rk-productions.net/Assets/Photos/bikes/2020%20V%20Strom%20New%20Bike%20Day/PendOrielleRide/IMG_7148%20(1).jpg
Either way, I enjoy your reports and hope you have at least a more positive than negative final opinion on the V-Strom 1050. If not, I totally get it and recognize that we all don't like the same bike. Ride safe and looking forward to your thoughts on the Multistrada V4S . . . soon I hope!
