  • 2020 Suzuki V-Strom 1050 Review | A back to back comparison & review with the V-STROM 1000. Having owned a 2014 Suzuki Vstrom for 5 years, I was very keen to ride the latest V-Strom 1050 from Suzuki. Branded as "vanilla" or "boring", this latest V-Strom has received a luke-warm reception from owners and moto-journos alike. Is it worth upgrading? How does it compare to the older model?

    This vstrom had to grow on me, still dont fancy the yellow and would go for the gray/blue. Had a 650 04mod for years and its was a gem. Still regret selling it. Im leaning on going back to the vstrom. Also a fan of the 17 to 19mod. Great review sir. 🇳🇴☕

      @@BlueMarbleRider it really was. I have the same Vstrom as you and I can’t bring myself to upgrade. It was nice hearing you came to the same conclusion... well sort of. The only thing that made me consider it originally was the cruise control and I actually really like the look of the yellow that you tested. That being said my biggest reason for not upgrading is I like everything about our current bike. We definitely have the best colour too.

    As a Yellow 2018 1000 XT owner, thank you for the informative comparison. Love the look of the new bike and updates to the electronics. Agree the price might be a touch high, I purchased mine for the value of what you get. But it is tempting if I saw a good deal out there…

    Excellent in-depth review I have just purchased the 1050A as I didn't like the spokes on the xt and didn't want or need the extra electronics it's a lovely comfortable bike to ride and enough power for the road

    Hello from Nova Scotia. An excellent comprehensive comparison between the two models. I too have the 2014 with the same windscreen and a two brothers slip-on (mainly for the weight savings but it sounds fun too). I'm in love with the bike and agree with all your observations. As you I think Suzuki took a chance with the price point and If you're correct and the price drops to a more v-strom level I may take the leap. I sometimes dream of the BMW R1250RT but can never justify the extra 15K. Love the opinions.

    • @BlueMarbleRider

      Hi, Mike: great to hear from another Canadian. I really enjoyed the bike; the only barrier being the price. I like the way it is an evolution which equals reliability. The GS is a lovely bike, but I can't get over the recalls, and how complex some of its systems are which would leave me feeling nervous on my proposed trip to Alaska this summer (if the borders open that is...). Then, as you say, there is the incredible price - not only of buying, but of the scheduled maintenance. I agree: it just doesn't make sense. Cheers.

    I was on the fence as I’m looking into the 2020 1050 and the 2019 1000. I already own the vstrom650xt and love it. However I feel ready to move up to a bigger more powerful bike. The idea of having all the power down low is really comforting since I feel most at home around 4000rpm or less. I do not enjoy feeling like I’m racing. I do enjoy accelerating hard when needed and feeling like the power is effortless. This is why the vstrom1000 will be my next bike . Great review as always. I love your banter .Regards,Ken

    I got my 14'Vee as the ADV package which meant hard pans of plastic, crash bars that do not really cover all they should, no heat/cruise BUT I added all that stuff, got some soft pans for off road, more protection, dropped the front sprocket from 17T to 15T making it a buzz saw. ESPECIALLY in the 1.5-5 thousand low torque range that is AWESOME! I like the simplicity of it, have taken it every condition and terrain and still LOVE it. The BUT I had to do these things to get it how I wanted it (Oh and I got one of the inexpensive clamp type cruise controls-works just fine). I DO have to say I was raised riding this last 5 years and used to bikes that you kick started, had NO protection, burned you on my upgraded expansion chamber (know what that is?) on my many times bored out 175 Enduro. So I am used to rolling into the badlands wearing my work boots, jeans and a T shirt as protection. Its all we had until I raced. Ok yeah, Im a dinosaur but still ride, still lead rides on/off road with my Vee and still love it. Its only a '14, and for a Vstrom that is still brand new! I still need to put another 200,000 miles on it so I do not feel guilty trading it in, probably by that time for a Max Scooter. I had one when I broke my neck/back and could not get my leg over a bike. The Burgman 650 was an amazing machine and they are really gaining in popularity. They are fast, fun, easy to ride and dependable. I had street guys giving me creds on the scoot for its quickness. Anyway, back to this review, I LIKE that you give an honest review. THAT is so rare these days. As you said here, Suzuki refined the Vee just up a bit over the last gens while keeping the GOOD qualities on the ride. You were spot on that the Vstrom is about the most sold ADV bike in the world due to its reasonable price and that durability and reliability it is known for. It is always listed in the top ten bikes or the review is not fair.It has such a great owner base that you can find out how to do do anything to these bikes while see guys riding them everywhere in the world and in all conditions. I think you gave about the PERFECT review of the new Vstrom 1050! I really believe that Suzuki will again take all the riders suggestions on the NEXT generation and make a SUPER ADV bike that will have the same type of lineup its doing now- from the road biased/the kind of cool anywhere ride middle one and then it will be to the bells/whistles full on ADV bike. I really believe that is why they did this gen the way they did. I will probably STILL keep my 14 Vee as I am slowing down a bit in my old age but still out there getting dirty and I definitely need my glasses to read an honest, non biased, previous model owners FULL review that YOU give my friend! Thank you as this has been the best review I have seen!!! Be safe out there!

    • @BlueMarbleRider
      @BlueMarbleRider  3 года назад

      Thanks for that, sir. It's a great bike - totally underrated. And yes, I know what expansion pipes are - I had them on my GT125 when I was a kid - noisy but worth it for the crazy snap in the power band when the choke was pulled. Link below...for how that went :-)

    Just moved from a 1290 SAS and enjoying the smoothness and simplicity of the Strom and of course looking forward to the piece of mind in the reliability stakes. Had the GSs and the KTM but the frequent faults and poor dealer support spoilt my pleasure of ownership. It’s early days but I think this is going to be a real love affair. I had a wee strom some years ago and loved it, I toured two up and ragged it around the track and it took it all. Thanks for the compressive review

    Nice review BMR, and I agree with most of what you say. I changed up from 2018 model to the 1050XT, so let’s get this torque deficit kicked into touch. To be honest, I really don’t know what all the fuss is about. Yeah, there’s a slight difference, but I ride with a mate who still has a 2017 model, when he goes, I go with him, and by the time I hit 5K I’m ready for an overtake. Then again, I went up 2 teeth on the rear sprocket, that might be the difference. If you had never rode the previous V Strom, you would still say that is a torquey engine. I think you hit the nail on the head, when you said you say you have the Z900 for sports riding, I had a Ducati Scrambler 1100 for that purpose to. That’s where the 1050 scores well, it likes to party, and it can party with the best of them. I can understand bikers not wanting to upgrade with their hard earned cash to what they think is not a big shift in performance, as for me, no regrets.
    PS. You’re right, that bar for mounting sat nav etc, is a great idea, but useless, I can’t read the Tom Tom it vibrates so bad. Keep up the good work, easily one of the best reviewers on RUclips 👍

    • @BlueMarbleRider
      @BlueMarbleRider  3 года назад +2

      Thanks. I enjoyed the bike a lot. I think what is key is that it still vstrom at heart and that comes through in the riding - traditional vstrom riders will still love it. That two teeth on the rear is a good idea and will probably erase any difference in low down grunt. Cheers.

    In September I test rode the new 1050 XT (it’s called XT in the U.K.) back to back with my own 17 facelift DL1000.
    Got to say I echo everything you highlighted in your review: the new bike lacks that instant shove low / mid range, it’s not as instant. But above 6k the engine really spins up and it’s definitely a bit quicker (or so it seems).
    The ride I felt was a little smoother on the new 1050, and the low speed fuelling was significantly better.
    My 1000 by the way has cornering ABS driven by the IMU.
    My thoughts echo yours precisely, I wouldn’t change up yet but maybe in a couple of years when the price drops, the low end grunt will be missed (I like that), but it’s not the end of the world. The screen, change it out for a Givi and their new for the 1050 wind deflectors.
    A really great review that I completely agree with - that’s rare 👍

    Very nice review, agree on everything you said , I had a first gen 650 rode it daily in all weather conditions, up to 200.000 km, a few months ago I went up to a 2022 xt whith all the bells & whistles, it is exactly like the 650 on steroids, love everything in this new bike, the bloody japanese made a really good bike again!!!
    I was waiting for them to bring the looks of the 1050 to the 650 but they did not...
    I was afraid of the 1050 being top heavy as I have seen many you tube reviews comenting on that, but it is not an issue at all, already at 8.000 km again daily use.

The 1050 clutch hasn't been fixed, so it will eventually vibe after time. I didn't trade-in, there just weren't enough improvements over the old one.

      Thanks. Yes, I'm happy with my 2014 Stom. Perhaps one day, but, like you, it didn't twist my arm into having to have one. It's an evolution rather than a revolution, and i like that - one of the few models out there where they gently improve, hone and iron out wrinkles without bloating the bike or throwing out the baby with the bathwater. As such, the next model in the Vstrom line has never been a a quantum leap forward. I think that serves the rider more than the company, and perhaps Suzuki are missing out there, but they have cultivated a loyal following...Cheers.

    I'm just like you for the rpm gauge. It's not a video game. When there is real gauges with needles, we can watch it in our white of the eyes while keeping our view on the road. It's more secure.
    I hope some people will not ask for the auto-pilot one day. But we're almost doing it while forgetting to handle in harsh weathers with our new traction controls. Yes it's good for security.

      Having owned and toured 2-up on both, you can do anything on the 650 that you can do the 1000, but the 1000 is the more capable and comfortable bike. The 650 feels more top-heavy compared to the thousand even though it is 8kg or so lighter. If you're commuting in town, then the 650. Longer distances...1000. Cheers.

    For me, I thought the led lights, cruise control, hill brake hold, centre stand, crash bars, etc, etc and riding comfort justified the change, especially as I prefer touring as opposed to comuter riding👍

    Nice review bmr. I didn't up grade as I felt not enough had changed over my 2018 xt. But I did trade it. Mainly because as you mentioned suzuki discount there bikes and as mine was on a finance deal and it was depreciating faster than fast, because of there new bike discounts to sell more new units (uk.) Clutches and baskets were changed on the 2017 onwards model years which gave it a slipper clutch and lighter operation.

    Good evaluation. I picked up a leftover '20 1050 XT for $13,200 U.S. out the door, in August of 2022. It supplements my '07 DL 1000 that carried me to Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, among other places. Unfortunately, I was hit head-on by a drunk while riding one of my Urals in December of that year. After six months recovering from a shattered left femur and broken wrist, I was ready to try riding again. Of my eight bikes the XT has the easiest clutch, so it was the obvious choice. As a side benefit, the start assist kept me from dropping it, as my balance was lacking. Power wise, the XT is similar to the '07, but smoother. Feature wise, there is no comparison. I particularly like the cruise control, LCD dash, and superior front brakes and forks. I installed the Suzuki plastic side cases and top box upon purchase. Just this week, I installed the OEM heated grips and a Puig touring shield. As you allude to, Suzuki's are a value proposition. This is fine for me, as I always look for end-of-year deals, or ones that have sat on the floor for two or three years, as was the case with my V-Strom's.

    Thanks for an excellent review. I bought the basic 1050 A model back in September - the dealer had a pre-reg bike with just 14 miles on it, on special offer. I ended up getting it with a centre stand and hand shields added for under £8400, with a full tank and 12 month road tax - bargain ! Agree with everything you have said, except I find the seat a tad too hard for me. During running-in (the first 600 miles) it averaged 62mpg. I have now done 1500 miles and overall, It manages 50miles per imperial gallon (4.54 Ltrs).

      Yes, the 1050 is definitely more road focused. Interesting to compare the 1050 to the new NT1100 from Honda. They are about the same price and offer similar tech (the Strom actually has more - IMU, rebound adjustment on the suspension, although it doesn't come standard with heated grips). Of course, with it's 19 inch front and slightly longer travel suspension, the Strom is going to be better off road. Great bike. Really enjoyed it.

    Very nice review and great comparison between the two models. Nice job! Perhaps I overlooked the answer to this question, but can the 1050 be remapped to more closely resemble the torque curve of the previous model? That low-end torque is what interests me more than top end performance.

    • @BlueMarbleRider
      @BlueMarbleRider  2 года назад

      The 1050 has very few engine mods over the previous model, but one of couple of them, the compression ratio and the cam timing are going to prevent an identical mapping to the torque curve of the previous model. I'm not sure if anyone offers an "increased low end torque" ECU reflash on the 1050. The difference wasn't huge, but it was noticeable to a current owner (me). It wouldn't stop me from "upgrading" if I wanted to, particularly as rumour has it that the Vstrom will be losing it's engine configuration on the next serious iteration, and going to a vertical twin with a 270 crank...cheaper to produce (a single cylinderhead, same characteristics...) Not sure what they will call it then...! Cheers.

      @@savagejabbit5929 so I like the noticeable increase in legroom and you can shift on the seat more. That being said it puts you higher and you may get buffering from the windscreen. I like to run the tall seat in the warm months with the stock screen in the lowest position. This makes for clean air past my helmet and a “cooler” ride. Now that temperatures are below 7 degrees C during parts of my riding, I put the taller National windscreen on and the stock seat so I have full wind protection. I'm loving my 1050 XT. I've owned many bikes over the years, and this will probably be the first I keep past 100k miles. For the windscreen, I'm wondering if the helmet buffeting is compounded by the visor on top of your helmet. I'm 5'11" and find the smoothest windscreen position for me is ~3/4 up. Nothing but smooth air hitting the top of the helmet. I live in CA where summer temps often top 100 so it's just about perfect as-is for me, no buffeting, and enough air to help cool you in the low position.

    I share the “too much like the old one” attitude. Why? I’ve owned three new ‘Stroms (‘09, ‘12, ‘15) - cumulatively, they’ve been ridden hard and long well over 200 000 kilometers. As a loyal Stromtrooper, I postponed buying another until this example was released. What’s been released is disappointing, not because it isn’t much better than the previous generation, but because it hasn’t integrated Suzuki’s variable valve technology, it has lost its windscreen functionality and its performance falls well short of what other manufacturers are now offering. Thanks Suzuki, for the memories. I hope to always have one in the stall and I really want to buy another, but, barring offers too good to refuse, it won’t be this offering.

      Agree - it would have been to have incorporated the vvt into the bike - it certainly is a better solution than BMWs shift cam which is basically a one hit rather than across the rev band. Give the 1050 a ride though, you might be surprised. Certainly lamb chop preferred it to the latest africa twin. Cheers. Great feedback.

    can I ask how much you weigh please? This is always interesting when people talk about a bike carrying more weight or less weight than a previous model. I weigh 100 kg (220 lbs or 15 st 5lb) so any bike I ride has to cope with that factor in terms of power output.

    Lovely review.....but im 3years late I guess😊.
    To be honest, I'm not an offroad rider. I currently have a 500cc bike. The current bike is, grossly underpowered and heavy. I wanted to upgrade to the 2020 1050XT but my brother who is also a rider keeps on saying that its too big a bike for daily city commute and suggesting the 2020 650XT is better.
    Probably I'm over compensating for the current low powered bike experience and want more power.
    I also dont want to buy another bike for the next 6years or so I must get this as right as it can be. I also want to start road trips (400km round trip) with my wife as a pillion passanger probably once a month.
    Any suggestions?

    • @BlueMarbleRider
      @BlueMarbleRider  5 месяцев назад +1

      Yes. Having had both the 650 and the 1000, the 1000 will commute just fine (clutch can feel heavy if there is a lot of start/stop), although the 650 is a better solo commuter (fuel cost). The 1000 actually feels lighter - weight feels lower. And while my 650 took my wife and I all over, the 1000 is by far the more sensible choice for regular 2 up work. After 6 years, the 1000 will still offer you all the power you want. You may grow out of the 650, given you are already on a 500. In short, the 650 will do everything the 1000 does, but the 1000 is the best all round bike I've owned.

    As a die hard Suzuki fan I'm very disappointed in the very minor up grades after 7 years were still looking at the same engine chassis ,and 4 grand more, You still can buy a new 19 for 11 grand theirs several for sale in dealers across Canada. And maybe even better a used 14 to 16 for 8 grand. Compare the upgrades the African twin has had in 7 years and you'll understand that the Vstrom engineers have been layed off,
    leaving the designers at bay.You can also compare it to the 650 Vstrom 09 maybe the most reliable Suzuki engine ever made, in 2014 they where selling used for 5 to 6 grand ,i still see them for 5 grand only because they where so good ,no recalls on that generation, so depreciation is big because of the minor upgrades and the 650 will always outsell the 1000 especially now,

      Tough call. If I only had one bike, then the 1050 as it adds a sportier dimension. But as I have several bikes, and the sportier dimension is well served by the Z900RS, I'd go with the 2014-2019 strom as it produces more of it's torque lower in the rpm range - which is great as I use it for commuting and touring. Good question. Cheers.

    You said about the great LCD screen. Well, it actually sucks. Not enough brightness and contrast for a full sun day, but the worst thing is the amount of parameters shown at once, which means, those are to small and to hard to find during a ride. For example, to check the time, you need to bend to the screen and search for the small digital clock in the bottom right corner. At the same time, you might get killed by not watching the road.

    • @BlueMarbleRider

      I haven't; however, rest assured, having owned the 650 for several years, the 1000 for several years, the 1050 is much quicker than the 650 and at least as quick as the 1000 (it actually feels faster because of the revvier nature, but I cannot confirm that). Don't forget, the difference in weight between the gen 2 1000 and the 650 is negligable, yet the former has 100hp compared to around 65... Not sure where you got your figures, but I always treat online figures with serious scepticism. Cheers.

      If it follows previous models, then the price will drop during the extended sale events and end of season blow outs. That's when the bike becomes excellent value for money. I think the Strom is aimed at reliable, cheap and comfortable long distance touring rather than the true ADV market. While the GS is fire road capable, it's a handful on anything more; like the vstrom, it's forte is really long road rides. Cheers.
