Besides counting the bars 1-12, I sometimes counted the 1, 4 and 5. In the key of A I was referring to the 1 A, the 4 D, the 5 E. I was simply referring to the intervals of the progression to express which chord number we were on. This is also referred to as a dominant 7 and a major sixth in addition to the five which is perfect.
