There is a lot of money to be made, the difference between now and back in the days is the focus on hobby. There are different levels of cards . retail, hobby, mega, high end. You NEED the money to invest if you EXPECT to get money back. Hobby boxes on avg go for between $80.00-$2,000 depending and they DONT come with very many cards.
Like he said u have to do ur research and know what to look for a lot of people jump in without knowing anything bout the hobby so they might be sitting on a 1000+ card and not know it!!!

If they are in really good condition I would grade them then sell otherwise ur leaving money on the table if they are a 9 or 10 ur looking at hundreds more for a raw card its a lot less!!
It’s important to know too that when you are looking at completed listings if a seller listed their card for sale where you could make an offer then the completed listing will show how much they first listed it for but then it will say “best offer accepted” so you cannot see what the card actually sold for. Just the price it was originally listed at.

To add on to what Gary V said about penny sleeves look up Hard Case sleeves also. Penny sleeves keep dirt off the card. Hard case sleeves help prevent damage. So put your card in a penny sleeve then a hard sleeve if you don’t have a book to place them in.

Sports cards are for the older generation. My generation is starting to see a rise in things like Pokémon and Yugioh cards. Find what kids love today, buy it up and sit for a long time, that’s what my dad did with early Pokémon booster card boxes. You’ll make some money.

I pulled 4 Lukas last year and bought 3 all for under 18 dollars. Value has exploded over the last year. I kept my first year Prizm LeBron from 12-13 and it's selling for like 250+ now. What's crazy is I haven't sold anything. I'm actually a collector. I'm 38 and have been collecting since I was 8. I just genuinely love collecting. Would I sell some of what I have, probably. Especially if it could get me the 86 Fleer Jordan Rookie.

What people don't understand is he's not talking about buying a few packs at Walmart, you could buy hundreds of the same Luka for instance at say 40$ and sell them a few months later for 400$ or more. There's legit money and one thing he never mentioned is we have eBay now and cards are printed differently unlike the 90's.
Also, Gary Vee's right about studying EBay completed and sold items to find selling/buying value. Though the price guides are still being printed, card dealers go to EBay to set their prices.

The idea is why would you buy millions of dollars of sports cards when you can just buy a painting if you want to call it art. After all he said $500,000, and anyone with that kind of money ain't buying this garbage.
