Same issue here in Albuquerque. A city-wide issue, but one large beautiful park that was the pride of the city with dog walkers and families alike was taken over to the point that businesses across the street, who had spent a fortune to have their facility near the park, was just a few weeks from losing their clientele. The homeless would vandalize the building every night (and use it as a toilet, and during the day, sneak into the business to use the bathrooms for drugs. Being nice to them did not help. They would demand water and sometimes, calls to the police would bring no help at all. Several times they were threatened with bodily harm. Heart-breaking that a wonderful family business was going under. The city finally cleared out the park (all the ancient older trees were already destroyed from being used as toilets with even graffiti carved into them), cut down all the trees, and it is now going to be a fire station. For now, they have moved to other parts of the city. Not a solution, but they don't want to have a solution unless it is on THEIR terms...no rules or regulations. Ridiculous. I fortunately live 50 miles away, but friends and family have worked hard to stay in town to serve the city they love. They have sacrificed so much already, as have the good folks in LA/Hwood. I thought the police or other departments from the government cannot remove personal belongings. Isn’t it why they cannot remove the homeless belongings? Why don’t the business use the same excuse and claim those planter are personal belongings and cannot be removed?????
I'm so tired of this unaffordable housing narrative. Everyone in a home or an apartment had to prove they could afford the mortgage or the rent. But these people can't afford the mortgage or rentb where they are, but they don't want to live where they can afford like everyone else does, they think housing should just be given to them. There is no entitlement to live wherever you want, you live where you canb afford. But we all know this is a drug problem, not a housing problem.
Pls stop blaming California and Californians for the drug addicts other states failed to rehabilitate. California is just at the tail end of a national problem with homeless drug users. They were flown in from across the nation in order for phony providers to milk federal coffers. Now that the coffers have dried up, the patients have been abandoned. Their families and home states are all too happy to be rid of them, while the phony lobby is blaming unaffordable housing for their failure to effectively rehab any of the addicts.
I hope they are all able to move out of California. Ridiculous that CA would rather have the mentally ill and addicted homeless in their neighborhoods and businesses than planters that don't harm anyone.
