    51 Degrees in phoenix this morning! Highs today 73! I'm really hoping it gets much colder! Weather has been stubborn here! 9 and 15 years ago today sky harbor airport got all the way down to 29 degrees! I really want that again!

    Hi Rachel! Thanks so much for making this video. I'll be interviewing to be an RA soon!
    I have a few questions:
    1. Have you heard of the RAMs (Residence Assistant + Mentor) for the Summer Pre-College sessions? My friend just told me about it today and it seems like they're hiring.
    a. Do you have any tips for RAMs?
    2. If I get accepted to be an RA, would I still be able to participate in RAMs?

      Yeah! I don't see the Pre College Scholars RAM position application as OPEN on the Residential Life website yet (reslife.berkeley.edu/opportunities/student-employment-opportunities/), but the process for applying would be very similar to the regular RA and summer RA application processes. The Summer RA and RAM application processes usually line up where the deadlines and interviews are around similar times in the spring semester. A few years ago, the processes were completely separate (ie, having to apply and interview twice if you wanted to apply to summer RA and RAM), but they may have combined those processes now to make them more streamlined.
      Tips would be the same as the regular RA application and interview advice! Although Pre College Scholars is not managed by Residential Life, they work closely with Berkeley Residential Life to design the app process. I guess one difference would be that RAM would be working with high school students, versus RA you are working with college students, so emphasizing your prior experiences with that age of students could be helpful! In the past, RAMs received room and board as compensation and a stipend for the summer, so a little different from Summer RAs/Regular RAs who do not receive stipends (RAMs may have changed some of these things though!).
      Yes, if you were accepted to be a RAM, you could still do a regular school-year RA position, since RAM is a summer position. However, you would not be able to do both RAM and Summer RA since those are both summer positions. If you were accepted as a school year RA and a RAM, double check the end date for the RAM program, as it might conflict with RA training in August. Sometimes Residential Life can be a little bit picky regarding Fall Training, for example, some summer RAs weren't allowed to take Summer Session C summer classes because the course finals conflicted with Fall RA Training... things like that.
      Hope this helps! Let me know if you had any other questions, good luck with your RA interview!

      @@rachel_lin Hey Rachel! Thanks so much for your help! I just got an interview notification for the TPRA position. Do you have any tips for TPRA interviews? I can't find any info about it online and I also don't even know how many TPRAs are hired for each position! Anyway, it seems like the interviews are 45 minutes so I don't really know what that means--does that mean no group interview? Thank you for your help!!

      @@catherinet.6584 Hey Catherine, congrats! I believe the TPRA interviews are only individual where you would be getting interviewed by the RD of the TPRA position, the current TPRA, and sometimes a campus partner helps interview. There would be 1 TPRA chosen for each Theme Program, so like if you are being interviewed for GETH, there is 1 GETH TPRA etc. Questions would be more Theme Program focused versus the RA interview questions were more general, so look up the TPRA program you are applying to online and review the Job Description to help understand the role, since the TPRAs have additional responsibilities over regular RAs.
      Are you living on a Theme Program floor right now? It could be helpful talking to the TPRA even if the Theme Program isn't the same as the one you applied for since they could give you some insights about the role. Hope this helps!

    What do you guys do if a crisis or emergency arises?

    • @rachel_lin
      @rachel_lin  2 года назад +2

      Hey Johana! The RA response would be different depending on what kind of crisis or emergency situation is happening - we have had instances involving assault, fires/power outages, armed trespassers, robberies, and people in the dorms who should not be. Each situation varies and would have a lot of nuances. For most of these instances, you would contact the Resident Director on call, similar to how RAs are on Duty, there is also a supervisor that is always on duty. Let them know what is happening and they would tell you next steps to take, like calling the campus police / trying to safely get students away etc. At Berkeley, all RAs are mandated reporters, so that may be the same for your college and would factor into how you would respond.
      They would train you on crisis situations and how to respond!
      If you were asked a question about this in your RA interview, definitely look at your RA job description and see what it outlines under crisis management!
