From a Tent to a Home: No Longer Homeless

- Rachel could have never imagined she'd end up without a home. However, that's been her reality for more than a decade, living in a tent on the bustling streets of San Diego-until now! This video takes you on Rachel’s journey from her makeshift tent to her very own apartment. Finally, Rachel has a place to call home!
It's heartbreaking to see that as the homelessness crisis is expanding, many politicians are focusing more on punishing homeless people out of sight instead of providing the essential support they desperately need. And sadly, San Diego is a prime example of a city that's pretty harsh on homeless folks. They seem more interested in penalizing them instead of giving them a helping hand, which hurts us all.
Homelessness is getting worse, and instead of creating helpful solutions, some are pulling back support for housing-the very thing that can genuinely solve homelessness! Housing not only gives people like Rachel a new lease on life but it's also a much more humane and effective solution than just moving people around or throwing them in jail. And, believe it or not, it actually saves taxpayer money in the long run!
San Diego's approach to dealing with homelessness is doing more harm than good, making the situation worse for those struggling to survive on the streets. It seems there’s a lack of understanding that secure housing is a game-changer-it can really turn someone’s life around, getting them off the streets permanently. Rachel’s story is living proof that giving people a stable place to live is the real solution to homelessness.
In a nutshell, the rise in homelessness calls for compassion and real, lasting solutions, like more housing options, not just condemning those who are struggling. Let's look at Rachel's new beginning and see it as a beacon of hope and a testament to what's possible when we address homelessness with kindness, understanding, and actual help instead of punishment.

About Invisible People
There is a direct correlation between what the general public perceives about homelessness and how it affects policy change. Most people blame homelessness on the person experiencing it instead of the increasing shortage of affordable housing, lack of employment, childhood trauma, lack of a living wage, or the countless reasons that put a person at risk. This lack of understanding creates a dangerous cycle of misperception that leads to the inability to effectively address the root causes of homelessness.
We imagine a world where everyone has a place to call home. Each day, we work to fight homelessness by giving it a face while educating individuals about the systemic issues that contribute to its existence. Through storytelling, education, news, and activism, we are changing the narrative on homelessness.
This isn’t just talk. Our groundbreaking educational content reaches millions of people every month. Our real and unfiltered stories of homelessness shatter stereotypes, demand attention and deliver a call-to-action that is being answered by governments, major brands, nonprofit organizations, and everyday citizens just like you.
However, there is more work to be done on the road ahead. Homelessness is undoubtedly one of our biggest societal issues today and will only continue to grow if we don’t take action now.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to educating the public about homelessness through innovative storytelling, news, and advocacy. Since our launch in 2008, Invisible People has become a pioneer and trusted resource for inspiring action and raising awareness in support of advocacy, policy change and thoughtful dialogue around poverty in North America and the United Kingdom.
Millions of dollars went into wars that weren't even ours, but we didn't provide for people here in the U.S. What a shame. I am an advocate, but for victims of human trafficking. This lady is destined for greatness.
America is insanely rich, you can provide for both, is not like America is poor like you, get the numbers
Billions of dollars went into billionaires pockets thanks to Trump. Most of the weapons that are sent to Ukraine are old and was going to be replaced anyway. New to US and old to Ukraine. Win win.
politicians r about wars not the people @@entertainmentyoutube3606
Investment in housing is investment in society! We have a permanent housing shortage in America. For over 40 years. A massive building campaign for affordable housing and rebuilding the housing stock, that is the ONLY thing that can and will end homelessness in America, and any other countries.
While being homeless , it makes sense to get a storage unit, that's affordable,to protect all your important documents and valuables.
each time i see those video i tell myself i could have been homeless too. Be kind , be fair and be human.
Oh so fair!👣👠😎
Alhamdulillah despite a poopoo economy, still living at a home
Right! This could be ANY of us! We can't afford to be callous and uncaring!
And deal with the root causes 80% of the time, which is drugs or mental illness.
@denisemayosky1955 Most are there because of drugs or mental illness. If you try you can pretty easily stay off the street.
She makes it sound like homeless people are better neighbors than my neighbors. The way she looked out for that young pregnant girl and they told each other “love you.” I’m literally crying. I hope she makes it to city council.
This video will make anybody feel grateful for what they have
Cool her apt is nicer than mine. Glad she's Blessed.
I definitely agree with you, I always thank the Lord, for what I have, thank God I got a roof over my head.
@@sylviathompson100 I will be even more grateful when Social Security quits lying about the fact I am working. And leaves me the hell alone. And quits threatning to cut off what little I do get. My family won't help me out at all. And both my parents are dead.
@@Zeton-THESEEKER I am so sorry to hear that, don’t let Social Security cut you off , I just don’t get it, the government will give money to the Illegal immigrants meanwhile, they don’t give a damn about American citizens, what this world is coming to?
I hope the pregnant girl is able to get housing, it seems like Rachel would be a great mentor for her. Nice to have friends when there's not much family. Bless each other.
Congratulations Rachel....You will make a great advocate for the Homeless and the Community.
I have mental illness and I’m grateful for everything that I have. I live in a mobile home.

My greatest fear, is to be homeless. You think it could never happen to you, but all it takes is a perfect storm of bad events in a person's life, and they can lose everything. Never underestimate life.
It doesn't even take a storm. One job loss. One apartment loss. One surgery. That's today's American middle class. Pitiful!
Same fear here.
@LoloO42 Usually it's drugs or mental illness
@@bigguy7353 if you haven't noticed.. the middle class is dwindling away. The way this administration is working it, There will only be the very rich & the very poor. All by design. That is WHY the fear for the average middle class American.

She sounds smarter than politicians.
Imagine the people that vote for those politicians
This lady is a great advocate for homeless and for herself. I am glad she is housed now. You can tell she has had alot of trauma in her life. People need to understand this could be anyone of us.
She will screw it all up again and blame the government
I was homeless for literally 4 months, and believe this lady when she speaks about trauma....and she's done 10 yrs. The few months I did have scarred me for life so props to this lady for the positive attitude. I hope she does good and heals
I believe it. It’s frightening.
When I see that. It makes me very happy that she has a place to sleep, eat, and shower. A little normalcy can go a long way.
I wish parents would stop normalizing kicking their kids out the day they turn 18.
@@zane8789those aren’t parents.
@zane8789 I still have two sons living with me. We are like roommates. We all pay our share of the bills. They get to pay off their bills and hopefully save to buy a home of their own. I have had other kids and grandkids move in with me at times also.
I was homeless on and off for 6 years. I haven’t lived at home since I was 16. I now have 27.5 yrs. clean. There’s nothing more exciting than finally having some stability and an actual place to live. That first night in a real bed was amazing!❤ I’m proud of you!❤
You are such a strong woman!
It won’t last. Once the economy gets worse and worse people will be on the street again!
Such a waste of taxpayer money to “clean” the streets instead of helping the people
She is clean. Not all homeless people are drug addicts, some go thru a life altering event and end up there bc they have no where else to turn. And the goal is for these people to become working members of society, thus paying taxes, and gets them off the street so you don't have to complain about seeing them anymore. You have a better idea?
@@sarahm1162never knew they have to pay to pitch the tent either… it shows how much struggle they have to get through at bear minimum, an idea should be that they could clean the streets too instead of being moved around as a way of volunteering in the community. We all go through life struggles what’s amazing is their resilience in the way they do come through.
@@sarahm1162 what are you talking about I never said she was an addict or anything negative towards the homeless people. My comment was about the government and their handling of the issue
@@AKAPARTThere's so much profit off homeless people, and keeping them that way, and average people need to research this, about how agencies, shelters, and others profit off homeless people ! The money wasted and STOLEN will amaze and shock people. This is why rescue missions, and other organizations lobby against housing all the time- if enough housing is built, they'll lose their " livestock."
@@realcreature3DAh, but they DO understand, and that's what is so terrible ! They assumed that non- homeless people would be unaware, uncaring and too preoccupied with personal matters to notice the corruption maintaining the Homeless Industrial Complex.
I've never understood why there are folks out there blaming the homeless for their own problems. They'd rather hate someone than find peace with themselves. This channel is revealing what we need to see. It's hard but necessary that we deal with our social problems least we all end up on the streets thinking it could never happen to us.
Exactly right,Shaun !! Many renters and homeowners trying not to be foreclosed on live in absolute terror over becoming homeless. They know enough from the news stories how hellish that life is, but because of not understanding how market rate rents driven by the permanent housing shortage can make one homeless, even though they'd never choose that situation on their own. It's all about stereotypes. Only drunks, or druggies, crazy people ever wind up homeless. People are either taught this, or don't know about the rental issues over finding an apartment you can afford. And apartments are often sold out beneath you, or converted to condos- goodby nice, safe apartment and hello( oh no!) homelessness !
@@JulieSevelson-nb9nj Not to mention that when people are struggling to stay afloat they often turn to drinking or drugs which adds to the slippery path of homelessness. Depression plays a huge part in your life and if you can't deal with it it only gets worse. This is why we need a health care system that works so people can get the help they need before things get worse for them. As is always the case it cost less to deal with someone who can get the help than a person in crisis which has a bigger cost to our society both financially as well as spiritually.
I'm impressed how fit and in shape she is in spite of being homeless
Meth.
@@robgrey6183 probably before but drug test and close screening is required for these people. I would do multiple drug test weekly and breathe test daily. I’m headed this way from car trouble , somewhere with no violence and no substance abuse would be great. The bathroom access on the street seems terrible. Everyone knows you can wake up in the morning and run to the bathroom with stomach problems. That and clean water.
I imagine junk food and snacks are an extreme luxury
@@robgrey6183She doesn't look like she is on meth at all... I've seen alot of people on meth and she looks clean to me. Having no teeth and being homeless doesn't make you a meth head...

People usually cycle in and out of their situations and bad decision making
@@angelaburress8586 So what's your point? Or are you just being negative and pessimistic b/c that's your attitude in life. Please do enlighten us as to all your perfect decisions.🙄
@@angelaburress8586That's bigotry and stereotyping on your part ! Seniors are the fastest growing demographic for becoming homeless. Did you know that ? In Pasadena, a few years ago, an apartment complex for seniors that had been there on Colorado Blvd.was taken over by a foreign company that was Chinese- Indonesian, and they threw out all those long- time tenants, and destroyed their lives, caused many deaths. This was recounted in the Pasadena Weekly. Hotel Dusit, the boutique hotel is called now. Each time housing stock is removed, this happens. Because we have a permanent housing shortage. Normal countries don't have large populations of homeless citizens. Period.
@@laurat1129Angela is probably one of those conservatives who believes, and wants to- that homelessness is only a moral failure, and not an economic failure as well. One size doesn't fit all when it comes to homeless Americans. By the way, it's frightening to see that in all the English speaking countries, the exact same thing is going on, and with the same responses ,too ! I was shocked to hear Australia as well, had that policy of ignoring homeless people. Britain under Thatcher also became Neoliberal, and with that came job loss and homelessness.
@@JulieSevelson-nb9nj You got it, Julie. There's always one trolling these threads, nothing better to do than to spread negativity, which is sad for humanity. Beautiful story. Im so happy for her getting her apt. I'm praying for the others. Thank you for sharing 😊
So lovely to see Rachel finally have a place that is her own that can provide a sense of safety and homebase to begin her healing journey onto hopefully a better brigher future.
In Australia right now we a facing a housing crisis where more and more are becoming homeless and as supply can't meet demand the greedy landlords are jacking up the rental prices pushing people further and further into poverty and some out onto the streets. Rachel is right, supply has to meet demand, or we will just continue with this horrible cycle of homelessness and will keep getting worse. I'm scared for our future, my future, and people lucky enough to have place to rent are forced to put up with substandard unhealthy/unsafe conditions because the landlords know they can get away with it because no one wants to be homeless!!
I've heard about that, Kaizen. Yes, it looks like Neoliberalism is surging ahead through corrupt politicians everywhere. Average citizens, who aren't homeless YET, need to get ahead of those officials and demand that a massive building campaign for affordable housing is started as soon as possible.
Such a good reminder how it’s the little things - having a roof over your head, food to eat, a safe place for you and your loved ones - that matter. Goddess bless this woman, and may she and her neighbors stay safe and be well. ❤

Thank you my friend I'm so happy you found me and we reconnected ❤
She is so lucky. I've been waiting for an apartment for me, my husband, and our almost 3 year old disabled baby since before she was born. We are in an apartment now but its almost too small for 1 person let alone 3. Her kitchen if you make it a rectangle is pretty much what we have. I have to ask who farted for logistical reasons. We cant fit a tv. That might be a good thing. We also all sleep in the "livingroom" which is the room thats everything except the kitchen and bathroom. Theres 2 doors. One is the bathroom door the other is the outside door. I would give my left arm for an apartment with space like that for my baby to move around in. The more she moves the better for her disability. Sorry for the rant. I'm grateful my little family has a roof over our heads. I'm happy for this woman and hope she really loves her new place for as long as shes there. Blessings to her and her family.

I'm in your same situation, except I'm 67. Idk if this helps any, but i found a way to buy a home thru a rent to own company. I've made payments for 5 years; in another 5 years, I'll own my house, free and clear. They sell them "as is", need a ton of work... but I was able to buy an approx 900 sq ft cabin, with an acre of land, for just $17,000. (I'm in MO.) It's been tough, living for 5 years with only a toilet, kitchen sink, and cold water (which I heat on my cookstove for bathing), while gradually buying the tub, shower, etc, but it's been worth it to me. It's an option you may want to check into.

High rents and inflation is causing homelessness. I’m a senior, living in apt for 45 years. New landlord, bought the unregulated multi dwelling apartment at inflated market price.. understandably raised tenant rents to market rate. I agreed to pay rent increase. Then landlord changed mind and terminated all our leases. I’m a holdover and going to face court this week, hopefully the judge will give me enough time to look for a job then find a new apt.. which both are difficult in this competitive high price market. landlord wants me evicted, so he can convert a one bedroom apt to a 4 bedroom apt to more rental money from individuals .. like a rooming board house. He already started doing major renovations in upstairs apt. But he’s not going to tell judge that. So now I have to give up retirement and look for full time employment at age 70 to have income to pay the high rent for an apartment… or else end up homeless in NYC.
The current illegal migrants in NYC are getting getting housing first…last week many American disabled veterans were displaced from their long term senior home to house the illegal migrants. They literally kicked out a 94 yr old disabled vet. 🤦🏽♀️
