Homeless Shelters Made This Man Sick! He's 72 Living in a Tent

  • Thomas is making the best out of living on the streets in San Diego, but at 72 years old, he shouldn't be homeless. We learned after this interview that Thomas is a veteran, which validates even more Thomas should not be spending his senior years homeless. No one, young or old, should be homeless.
    Thomas says you could not pay him to stay in a homeless shelter. He says shelters made him sick, and his health didn't get better until he went back outside in a tent.
    Thomas wants to go into an apartment, but he shares that the housing being offered to the elderly is rundown and not suitable to live in or they take most of his Social Security money, leaving him nothing to live on.
    Sadly, Thomas is just one of many seniors that cannot afford housing. The issue of elderly homelessness in America is a growing and disconcerting crisis that underscores systemic shortcomings in both healthcare and social support networks. Often falling through the cracks of an already burdened system, elderly individuals face unique challenges such as declining physical health, increased medical needs, and social isolation. Traditional support systems like pensions or family structures are increasingly insufficient while skyrocketing healthcare costs and a lack of affordable housing contribute to the complexity of the problem. The vulnerability of this demographic is further exacerbated by their susceptibility to physical and emotional abuse and even exploitation. This crisis is not only a tragic reflection of societal values but also a critical issue that demands immediate, comprehensive, and compassionate solutions. The current situation is a clear call to action for policy changes that address the root causes of homelessness, particularly among the elderly, who are one of the most vulnerable populations in society.

    About Invisible People:
    Since its launch in November 2008, Invisible People has leveraged the power of video and the massive reach of social media to share the compelling, gritty, and unfiltered stories of homeless people from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C. The vlog (video blog) gets up close and personal with veterans, mothers, children, layoff victims and others who have been forced onto the streets by a variety of circumstances. Each week, they’re on InvisiblePeople.tv, and high traffic sites such as RUclips, Twitter and Facebook, proving to a global audience that while they may often be ignored, they are far from invisible.
    Invisible People goes beyond the rhetoric, statistics, political debates, and limitations of social services to examine poverty in America via a medium that audiences of all ages can understand, and can’t ignore. The vlog puts into context one of our nation’s most troubling and prevalent issues through personal stories captured by the lens of Mark Horvath - its founder - and brings into focus the pain, hardship and hopelessness that millions face each day. One story at a time, videos posted on InvisiblePeople.tv shatter the stereotypes of America’s homeless, force shifts in perception and deliver a call to action that is being answered by national brands, nonprofit organizations and everyday citizens now committed to opening their eyes and their hearts to those too often forgotten.
    Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to changing the way we think about people experiencing homelessness.

      Yes, because there's just no substitute for affordable housing, and it needs to be created all over the country, because we have a permanent housing shortage in America, and have had this growing problem since 1980. Shelters are money makers for the operators. I hope this man has a caseworker who can connect him with affordable housing for seniors ! Someone should steer him in that direction. I'm not surprised to see that he's been offered terrible solutions to being on the street. High rents are the main reason so many times are homeless now. It's a stereotype to claim that only addicts, alcoholic people or mentally ill people are homeless, because this is primarily economic in nature. We have millions more people now, than in 1980. But the same amount of housing stock , because apartments stopped getting built by that year. Please remind people to go to City Council meetings, and demand that housing is built, or created, for low income people.

    • @kommisar.
      @kommisar. 8 месяцев назад +2

      @@JulieSevelson-nb9nj The problem with homeless people isn't that they can't afford rent or don't have a home. That is merely a symptom. The REAL problem is they have substance abuse problems and are lazy. That is the bottom line. If these people were truly capable, productive people, they would have found somewhere they could afford to live by now. Any homelessness would be purely, very temporary. They wouldn't be sitting on their asses day after day on a cardboard box whining how they can't have afford to live anywhere. Even when we put these people up in some place, much like the people living in the projects or the migrants being put up in hotels, they just destroy the places. It's a completely waste of time and money to try to solve this problem by giving these people homes, because they will just destroy everything they touch.

I'm sure if you let them stay at your place, they wouldn't trash it, eat all your food, destroy your bathroom, use drugs, smell the place up, assault/creep out your children, etc., right?
      And as far as the government goes, currently the government spends billions on these people, and all that has happened is that their numbers have grown. Why should we keep pumping money into the problem through the government when it's clearly not working? Better yet, why is it OK for you to say these are good, honest, moral people who need help, but YOU shouldn't help them, the government should? Ugh. Everything is a catch 22 when your homeless. If you stay with family or friends, you're considered "housed" and ineligible for any help. I spent all of my time applying for section 8 and/or a housing voucher. I was just about to move to Utah, just because they had openings. I live in CT! I did finally come up on a waiting list and got my "affordable" apartment. It took 4.5 years. 😡

Plus Visa requirements for extended stays I doubt this man's income would be acceptable . I just wish they wouldn't go after the tents . Try to find an area that's vacantant allow the tents a few comfort stations and access to a water source . Don't think people should plop a tent down on the sidewalk and decide they life there now, should be mobile and move everyday, everything should fit in a backpack, agree with "No Daytime Camping" bans many cities are imposing. People can live homeless with a few basic things: A mailing address, An ID, a bank account, a storage place for seasonal clothes & food supplies, a gym membership for workouts & showers, some type of nightly shelter. A storage facility can be one of those 65 gallon lockable trash cans located at a church. Doesn't take much to function while homeless.

    This is why I suppport aggressive building of affordable housing instead of more shelters, incarceration, and stupid gimmicks like "the tiny home movement."
    A very common story of homelessness is someone becomes elderly or disabled and receives an SSI or social security check. Yet that check is too small to afford anything in the city. This man may be able to afford a $500 a month SRO unit, if it were legal to build.

      Note that social security is meant to supplement your retirement. It is not meant to be your only means of living. You probably know, but an important point for all readers. This is the perfect example of this fact. Technically, I’ve always heard it should make up no more than 40% of your retirement income.

    Out of the $1200 , he has remaining of his money per month after child support of $50, he has $400 to pay on a storage unit. Maybe he needs to downsize or sell off things in that storage unit to get some money in that way. After paying $400 storage unit payment, he only has $800 left. There has to be some kind of senior housing he can be helped with. There is lots and lots of senior housing being built everywhere in San Diego. It is project based housing where he would only pay 30% of his income for rent for that. No senior should be homeless. Someone dropped the ball on this man.
