The Monkees were a group that was created for a TV show called "The Monkees". They were American except for Davy Jones, who was English. At first, only one of them was actually a musician(Mike Nesmith on guitar). Peter Tork is the blonde guy and I believe he ended up playing bass guitar. They were aspiring actors auditioning for a TV show, and they later learned to play their instruments and actually performed concerts and went on tour. Mickey Dolenz(the guy with the tambourine), is the last surviving member, and he still plays shows in tribute to his band mates

Britt ! Thanks for this cool post and commentary! As a Music writer and journalist myself for 35 years I appreciate this .. The Monkees were (mostly) American based from 1965-1970 originally. Davy Jones was British , however. They eventually challenged the Beatles on the record charts by 1967. They became good actors and solid musicians after practicing together in 1967 for a major world tour . Contrary to rumours of being just "actors" , they even became really good songwriters eventually,.. and played their own instruments in the 1967-68 World tour across North America , Britain , Australia , and Japan . Even the Beatles became impressed by their talent . John Lennon , Ringo Starr, and Michael Nesmith became good friends as well. The Monkees TV show was innovative , in that it pioneered the first broadcast "rock video" tv format in 1966. Production techniques from that show ultimately led to the creation of MTV, by Mike Nesmith and his associates in the early 1980s too!

I think they were trying to capitalize on the massive popularity of The Beatles by creating kind of a funny TV boy band version or something but then they took on a life of their own. A couple other of their really fun catchy hits like this are I'm Not Your Stepping Stone (which the Sex Pistols had a huge hit with their aggressive cover of it several years later), and, Pleasant Valley Sunday.

I was barely born when the show was on but grew up on the songs. I watched it in its entirety back in the 80s, though. While they all took turns as lead on records, the actual lead singer was the drummer, Mickey (playing the tambourine). Mike (or "wool hat" as he was sometimes called) and Peter (yawning at piano) were the actual musicians of the group. Davey shared the lead vocals role with Mickey but he was the actual tambourine and maracas player. Mickey was the goofy one. Peter played the dummy, Mike was the silent type and Davey played the heartthrob. The four played struggling musicians in a band (and show) called The Monkees. They were hired as actors with stage musicians playing the actual instruments and writing the songs. After this became common knowledge, it created a controversy, despite the fact that it was common practice to have stage musicians play on records. After this, the four of them, started pressuring the studio for a chance to record their own material and, eventually, to hold LIVE concerts. Over time, the studio relented and The Monkees went from being a fake band on a TV show to becoming a REAL live actual band. The rest, as they say, is history. TRIVIA: Because Davey Jones was already using the name, another "Davey Jones" had to register under another stage name. That other guy chose the name......"David Bowie"

Despite their each being extremely talented, their music was not taken seriously because of the comedic nature of the show. Davey is the lead on this song; he was from Manchester, England; he had a theatrical background, having played the Artful Dodger in Oliver Twist in London and then moving on to Broadway. His career was at a crossroads when he signed on for this show. Yes, he was short - he was also an aspiring jockey before entering into the performing arts, and did return to being a professional jockey after the downswing of the Monkees.

No one else seems to notice it. I also love how Davy (the lead singer in this song) instructs Peter (the keyboardist) on what notes to play and Peter seems to just comply until Davy's back is turned and Peter makes a face. Singer, who sings this song, David "Davy" Jones. I have met him thru mutual friends in Florida in my town. Jones love to live in my town because locals treated him like a regular guy not a celebrity. He had a home in local golf course development in town. One of my friends had a local bar in town. Every Saturday night, bar had karaoke. One Saturday night, my friend somehow persuaded Davy to sing one of his songs in the bar. Plus, Davy had my friend sing together on this song, Daydream Believer for all who were there. It was awesome! I was working there when they sang the song. I remember that Davy orders his pints of Guinness when he shows up at the bar. Davy had dry British humor! He is very humbled man.
Sadly, he died over 10 years ago in 2012. Davy died during his passion of riding one of horses at local stable.

Peter Tork was a real musician and a friend of Stephen Stills (a member of folk/rock band Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young). Mickey Dolenz was a former child actor. Mike Nesmith came from money (his mom invented Whiteout) and Englishman Davy Jones was an actor in Great Britain. All of the songs were written by a team hired by the producers of the show and didn't play the music heard. Studio musicians play the music and the group added the vocals later.

This was the fashion of the times for the mid to late 60's hippie. The 'backwards' shirt was really just a high collared shirt. A lot of performers of the time took to wearing styles reminiscent of the late 1700's ie: Revolutionary War soldier uniforms, etc. Nehru jackets made famous by Prime Minister Nehru of India were also big. This was a time when young folks were drifting away from their parents' tired old suit and tie that were pretty much standard wear. If you see any films or documentaries of the mid 60's to early 70's, you'll see what I mean. This was the birth of the flower child! Lots of beads and tie dye, torn jeans bright colors. My parents let me wear a tie dye shirt but wouldn't let me get a Nehru jacket. That was a bridge too far! Thanks for the look back! I loved the Monkees and their television show, which was campy, silly and sometimes quite cringey! But it was very very entertaining. If you get a moment, some of those shows are still available to watch. Their music is timeless and finding a new audience. Please take a moment to look for other songs from them like - 'I'm a Believer', 'Pleasant Valley Sunday', and 'Last Train to Clarksville'. Best of luck to you and your channel!

They were 'created' as a band to be a hit, one of the first bands-by-committee... and then their best hits were the ones they wrote themselves, and they fought hard for that right (Michael Nesmith, the tall man on guitar) was their virtual leader, and led the fight for their emancipation. he just died last year. They were a fake band put together for a tv show in the 60’s. They became a real band with albums. The group is American but the lead singer Dave’s Joe s is English.

They outsold the Beatles two years in a row. Davy was a Broadway actor. The fuzzy hair Guy, Micky, was a child actor in hollywood. Mike, the one with the guitar, his mom invented white out and then sold ot for millions. He was a songwriter/musician etc. Peter, piano, was a fantastic musician. All but Micky are dead and he is still touring!!
