I was SO lucky to have met Peter Tork in 1982 on Venice Beach. We ended up being "coffee buddies" as he hung out on at the boardwalk alot. I was like 21 and he was just open, warm, and appreciative of his fans. I saw him about 2 or 3 times a week for the three years I was there.

What is there not to like? Fun, melody, great lads. I was 7 and we loved the Monkees in the UK. In fact, I lived a mile from Davy Jones, and girls always congregated outside the house he bought for his parents in Gorton, even though he was living in the States. People in Gorton would occasionally see him over in Manchester when he walked in the local Debdale Park. No one hounded him, but they would wave and blow kisses.

I installed the satellite dish for John Stewart in Novato, CA. On the stairs going up to the MBR was the ORIGINAL Gold Record for "Daydream Believer" hanging on the wall. When I commented about it, he told me that song alone bought him a few houses.

I had the privilege of seeing the (then) surviving members in concert several years ago, backed up by some additional musicians. When it came time for them to play this song, Micky stated that ONLY Davy could possibly sing lead on this one, and through the magic of the Wayback Machine they played his vocals and sang along. For the last chorus Micky said, "You sing it!" and held his microphone out toward the audience. And sing it we did. Then, for that single night on that tour, Mike (who lived nearby) joined Micky, Peter and the backing musicians onstage for the last 4 songs. I am so glad I got to see that, as it will never be seen again.

I love it when people who have never heard of the Monkees do reaction videos to their songs! The Monkees are my favorite band of all time, and it just warms my heart to see other people enjoying them and learning about them and their music. So many people have such a negative attitude toward them because of how they came together (they were essentially a "made-up band" created for the TV show), but as you saw and heard, their music is uplifting and much better than those critics would have you believe. Speaking of the TV show, definitely check that out! You can't help but laugh at their silly antics. That was the whole purpose of their show--to entertain, to make you laugh and feel good. It makes me sad to think that so many people miss that point. They wrongly judge the Monkees for being "fake." But if you dig deeper into their history, you will see that yes, they did enjoy hanging out and performing together. They may have had a few squabbles, but that's just like any "family." They essentially were like a family, and the two remaining Monkees (the other two sadly passed away) still enjoy touring together to this day. I really hope you will take the time and check out more of their music and the TV show. There's so much more to the Monkees than them being "The Pre-Fab Four!"

The Monkees were a prefabricated band put together for TV by Don Kirschner and they were sometimes referred to as the "Prefab Four" as a take off of the Beatles nickname of "Fab Four". They were good, though originally, I believe studio musicians were used but they actually were pretty good musicians on their own. The two guys on this video on piano have both passed away. I loved their half hour tv show of they had as struggling musicians getting into all kinds of trouble, often slapstick humor and good music. I used to watch them all the time.

Hi guys. So the Monkees was a TV show. These guys were not meant to be an actual band. When the show got popular the agents set up concert dates, and suddenly The Monkees were a real recording band. The little guy doing lead vocal here is Davy Jones. He was a kid actor and then a song and dance man in England. The guy playing tambourine is Mickey Dolenz who was a child actor on a TV show here in the US. He also is the Dad of actress Amy Dolenz. The blondish guy at the piano is Peter Tork who was primarily a musician. The guitar player is Mike Nesmith who they had some trouble keeping interested in the show. He was the one guy who didn't need the money. His Mom invented Liquid Paper. These guys had a couple hit records and did okay with their concerts. Stay safe and well.

Mike did not get the money until after his mother passed years after the show was over. I read that he got half, and the other half went to some foundation she started.

You should check out Shaun Cassidy’s songs That’s Rock ‘n’ Roll and Hey Deanie. He was popular in the 70s. His mother is Shirley Jones and his half brother David Cassidy were both on Partridge Family TV show.

Thanks for looking at these guys - they started out as a "put-together band" - they all had to audition for parts - mainly for a TV show - (inspired by the success of the Beatles) - so the "selected" members had to do this goofy show, and had some songs written for them by some good songwriters - esp. "Boyce & Hart" - but they eventually rebelled and b/c they were actually pretty decent musicians in their own right, had some pretty good songs... the videos back in the day were very "cheesy" and silly - (BTW, when you said "Brady Bunch" I had to laugh - b/c the lead singer - Davy Jones - actually appeared on an episode of that show!! lol)

Davy Jones aka David Bowie had to change his name to avoid confusion with this Davy Jones. I’m a Believer is a great Monkees song written by Neil Diamond which is a whole other rabbit hole to go down in.

This song was written by the wonderful artist John Stewert. He was an original freedom rider back in the day. He campaigned for Bobby Kennedy. Check out his work you won’t be disappointed!

They wrote several of their own songs, especially Mike Nesmith (The Girl I Knew Somewhere, You Just May Be The One, Listen to the Band, Mary Mary, Circle Sky, Papa Gene's Blues, Tapioca Tundra, etc.)
Peter Tork wrote In This Generation, which was the closing theme of the show.
Micky Dolenz wrote Randy Scouse Git, which hit #2 in England.

@@MovieVigilante Yes, this is true, but they were swept under the rug for the most part. Most of the time it was the studio appeasing them, despite all four being accomplished musicians. I suppose what I meant is that the major hits were other writers.
