The Monkees were originally put together for a TV show as an American version of the Beatles. They were never meant to be a real band, but they ended up having some really great songs and even toured with those songs. Please review "I'm A Believer" "Last Train To Clarksville", "Pleasant Valley Sunday", "Circle Sky", "Porpoise Song", "Daddy's Song", "Listen To The Band", and "Mary, Mary"

Love this song. It's about an adult couple who were high school sweethearts, a homecoming queen & daydreamer who she thought of as her "white knight", they've had their youthful fun but now they're adults with responsibilities having money problems. They have to get up to that early alarm, shave, get ready for work. For Jean, this kinda sucks, but the "dreamer" husband is an optimist who is basically saying "cheer up, we've got each other, nothing else is that important."

Because of the guy in the Monkees, this other singer had to change his name. The new name he chose was David Bowie.

Its not true, but its a good story. Bowie changed his name in 1965. Homage to Jim Bowie. Monkees were not formed until 1966. He did know of Davy before the monkees, but they were both signed to labels as David Jones then. The monkee thing only came up when he wanted to be Davy Jones as in davy jones locker, a pirate motif for an lp in 67 and his label told him we are not making a monkey out of you. He created personas his who life, Ziggy Stardust to the thin white duke.

"I'm A Believer" was written by Neil Diamond. Mickey Dolenz sang lead. Mojo magazine July 2008 asked Neil Diamond if he resented at all the Monkees' success with this song at a time when his own recording career was less successful. He replied: "I was thrilled, because at heart I was still a songwriter and I wanted my songs on the charts. It was one of the songs that was going to be on my first album, but Donny Kirshner, who was their music maven, hears 'Cherry, Cherry' on the radio and said, 'Wow, I want one like that for The Monkees!' He called my producers, Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich - 'Hey, does this kid have any more?' And they played him the things I had cut for the next album and he picked 'I'm A Believer,' 'A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You' and 'Look Out (Here Comes Tomorrow),' and they had some huge hits. But the head of my record company freaked. He went through the roof because he felt that I had given #1 records away to another group. I couldn't have cared less because I had to pay the rent and The Monkees were selling records and I wasn't being paid for my records."

It's hard to explain, from a 66 year old point of view, how important this music and other rock and roll was to me when I was growing up. I was raised on Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, George Jones, Loretta Lynn, Dolly Parton, Tammy Wynette, Ray Charles, and Nat King Cole. Then rock and roll came along and The Monkees, for a time, rated above the Beatles for me. Good times!

A lot of people are suggesting "Last Train to Clarkesville" as another Monkees song you should react to, but for me their best song has always been "Pleasant Valley Sunday." Mickey Dolenz (the group's drummer, and in this video the guy with the tambourine) does vocals on that, and he puts just enough emotion into it that you feel the point of that song.

Another really good one by The Monkees is The Last Train To Clarksville. You can't go wrong with that one. Pretty much everyone likes it. Give it a listen and you'll see. The Monkees got way more successful than the people who put them together thought they would. They had quite a few top 10 songs. Their TV show and their music was because of the Beatles popularity and they wanted to get in on that. Since their TV show was a weekly thing, they needed new songs written more often. They hired Burt Bacharach to get songs written. He was one of the biggest writers in music. All in all, it went very well and plenty of money was made by all.

This is another song from the magical year of rock, 1967. You've already heard several songs from this year. Rock transformed itself from 1965 to 1967, and after that it was ON FIRE.
The Monkees were a band somewhat cynically assembled to tap into the pop music audience. But even though it was kind of artificial, it worked surprisingly well as a pop band.

Interesting fact...The lead singer on this song was the late Davy Jones. Davy watched from backstage and decided he liked the way the girls reacted (or over reacted) to the Fab Four and decided he wanted to be in a rock band.....The Monkees was a TV show loosely based on a Beatles movie....life comes full circle.

The Monkees were TV's and America's answer to the Beatles. However; they all had to audition for the show, but only Mike Nesmith and Peter Tork were musicians. Davey Jones and Micky Dolenz were actors. Micky had to learn the drums in order to play live. The songs were hand-picked for them, although they later were able to write songs for themselves. The show only ran for 2 seasons; for which the band fell apart after. Nesmith inherited his mother's fortune; as she was the creator of Liquid Paper. Nesmith would go on to create MTVf; for which he had them do a 24-hour marathon of the Monkees TV series, which brought the band back into the limelight. They started a new tour, but Nesmitch left again shortly after. The band played off and on, sometimes only 2 or 3 members at a time.
Davey Jones died on February 29, 2012, and the band got together one more time. On February 21, 2019; we lost Peter Tork as well. In an interview for an Austrian TV show; Dolenz said we were as close as brothers, Nesmith broke in saying, "I didn't like Peter, and he didn't like me" but Dolenz said it back as Nesmith fought back tears after stating hearing the Tork as passed away, "Do you have siblings? Need I say more?" They may not always like each other, but they were family, they were brothers, they were a band. Even though they were dubbed the Pre-Fab Four and many said they were not a real band; they were as real as it gets.
I grow up watching the returns of their show, listening to their music, and I still listen to it today. I thanks the powers at NBC for bringing us these amazingly talented young men. They will live on in their music and their TV show. Rest in Peace Davey Jones and Peter Tork. Nothing but love!

I was allowed to stay up and watch them and was immediately in love with Davy Jones although I was probably already taller than him. I think he was about 5 feet tall. Anyway, all us girls loved them and a group of my friends were going to see them at the Hollywood Bowl. I wanted to go so badly and begged my dad. He wouldn't let me go because of the "drugs and hippies" that would be there. In the late 60's and early 70's most parents had this terrible fear that their daughters were going to go to a concert and immediately become drug addicted, hippies that wandered around the neighborhood giving out free love. It had a big impact on me and affected how I raised my daughter. From a very young age, I started taking her to concerts and of course, I stayed with her and her friends until they were old enough to go unattended. My daughter has seen more artists in her young life than I have seen in all 68 years of my life!!

This was the Billboard #1 song the week I was born in 1967, and has held a special place in my heart. Thanks for reacting to it!

Many of us were raised on The Monkees.. they influenced a lot of future musicians and changed the game without even trying. Some cool songs not mentioned.. "For Pete's Sake", "A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You", "Valleri", "Love Is Only Sleeping ", "Star Collector", "Papa Gene's Blues" and "What Am I Doing Hangin' Round"..

Daydream Believer" is a song composed by American songwriter John Stewart but was first recorded by the Monkees in 1967. The Monkees were a band put together by the Network so they could have a band they controlled that could compete with the popular British bands Like the Beatles and other popular imports of the time. Make no mistake their records were hits.

As a small child in the 60's, it really was a happy time for me to grow up. Songs like this were so much a part of my childhood, brings back great memories! Love hearing this music again with both of you!!

Created for a tv show, no one imagined how good they were together. In th60’s there was a music show on tv nearly every night. Great tv back then. My mom, who was almost 60 when I was a teen, loved these shows as much as I did and we watched them together and sang along with every song. Thank you for a great reaction. Being a hippie? Within a four years I had my own little hippie baby and she’s still my hippie and we sing along to all the songs of the 60’s and 70’s.

I wish to God more people would listen to and react to the Newest Monkees song that came out in 2016 called Me and Magdalena. Mike does the lead and mickey backs him up. Rolling Stone Magazine ranked it in the top 25 songs of 2016. It is hauntingly beautiful. Mike age weary voice and Mickey sounds as good as he did in the 1960's. Please try it!

Everyone’s favorites are this song, I’m a Believer, Last Train to Clarksville and Pleasant Valley Sunday. But Stepping Stone, A Little Bit Me A Little Bit You, and Valleri are also bangers. And I realized, I’m way too old to be using the word bangers.

The Monkees were my first obession. I was only 4 years old in 1966 and I adored Peter Tork...Davey Jones was a close second. This was my favorite TV show. I was privileged to see them in concert in So Cal about 20 years later. That concert was so much fun.

The Monkees has a few songs that will blow your mind. One is called "Going Down" It's almost a scat rap, yes I said rap.....as close as you can get for 1967 and then a Christmas song they did in another language which is sung all acapella and so cool called "Rui Chiu" . Please review those I'd love to see your reactions.

"Goin Down" is the best Monkees song. Bluesy and fast paced. And the song is often overlooked. Give that one a shot and you wont regret it. :)

When I was a kid I loved the Monkees TV show. It was kind of like a live-action Scooby-Doo where the band members would get into some sort of misadventures and then they would break out into a musical performance at any time. They guys in the band were so funny. I couldn't pick a favorite Monkee if I tried.
