I rent from a Navajo woman in New Mexico. Many of her family on the REZ do NOT have water or electricity. In the past I was a Children's Director for a domestic shelter by Chicago. What needs to be done are SAFE community shelters that provide parenting education, community kitchen, wellness check ups, short term daycare for single parents to get a break, information/support for local businesses. Change only works if you start at the center with heart.
I roomed with a Navajo woman who legally took peyote every day. She had scholarships out the wazoo & washed out before the end of freshman year. So what? I think she would have done better in school without the peyote & handouts.
