Photography Tips - DIY Pop Up Flash Diffuser Pt 1

- Lots of people have asked us how to improve on the light from a camera's pop up flash. So we set about making a low budget DIY pop up flash diffuser - and there are loads of ways to do it.
Light from your camera's pop up flash is very hard and directional because it's coming from a tiny light source. So the key is to understand how to make the light not only softer - but bigger so it wraps around your subject. If you've got a whit room to work in your pop up flash can be made to bounce around the room so the whole space becomes part of the light source.
We explored four ways to make a pop up flash diffuser which work well in the indoor scenario - but check out part 2 because you'll get a different lighting effect when you move to a different location.

As a beginner, I know tiny tiny things of this subject. But, the way your presentation is simple, understandable and attractive.
Mike. This simple explanation can help all users to improve their flash photography, consider shared!
never seen a video which talks positive about using pop-up flashes, very interesting
Thank you
Your Explanation is Awesome! No other RUclipsr can explain like You.😍😍
Thank you:) like what you see? help us spread the word.
Thank you. Yes it will work provided the walls are close enough for the flash to reach them - BUT if they are coloured walls they'll make the light the same colour.
Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge! You took a difficult concept and made it understandable. I can't wait to go try these diffusers with my camera!
Thank you. I'll pass your kind comments on...
Nice! The new NEX Mirrorless cameras from Sony actually have a swiveling popup flash. Just need to push it back with a finger & it naturally points upwards. Ultimately it achieves the same effect as the business card. Just need to ensure your finger doesn't create a shadow... Really loving my new A6000
ive watched loads n loads of your amazing tutorials. I probably owe 90% of my photography knowledge to you, so this is just a BIG THANK YOU.
AND THANKS TOO TO JANE AND TASH
all your videos are so great! i love how easy and simple you make all your concepts. thanks a ton!
Mike, I found your paper diffuser quite great, because the way you stick the paper on the camera allowes you to close the flash and pop it up at any time with the diffuser already on.
Thanks
Tried the note paper one the results were incredible :) the shadows were bearly noticible
I have watched many different photography tutorials and yours is one of the best. Found myself watching quite a few of yours today. Thanks!
I have been going through your videos and enjoying the techniques and advice you give. It was my daughter prom the other day and i used my Nikon D3200, only had the 18-55mm lens, but used the empty film canister to defuse the light. I am very happy with the result, thank you for taking the time to share to knowledge.
Rock and Roll :-) thanks for trying it and letting me know of your success - MIKE :-)
It's great that you don't recommend tonnes of gadgets to buy like other tutors do, just use what's at hand, great stuff.
Cheers
Fantastic explanation!! I've been into 'available light' photography for years and just purchased my first speedlight.. I'm shooting a tattoo competition at the weekend and this has explained so much!
Thanks Mike X
Thanks... Have fun at the TAT shoot - MIKE :-)
Always great to watch
Mike Browne....you have saved me sooo much money on trying to get a flash to take pictures and buying a diffuser. I will eventually buy one but for now i want to try your techniques. Thank you so much!! I needed this for a last minute shoot I am doing this weekend.
Cool - Thank you Lauren L Please help me grow the channel and make more free vids by sharing them here, on Facebook, forums etc :-)
Another great tutorial explaining a technical concept in clear precise detail - good teaching Mike...quality stuff !
Thank you Canaew Cammy
Ingeniously explained, Thank you Mike...
In theory it would. But the on camera flash isn't very powerful so you'll need a very confined room to do it in because you'll lose several stops of light from the bouncing and around another 2 stops as it passes through the light tent.
Thank you for your kind words:-)
I think the cup with the hole at the bottom gonna give the best result. Tks for the great tips, luv it!
Fantastic Mike! Brilliantly explained!
thank Mike for making it simple and practical.
I know this is an old video now but I just came across it and can't help to comment what a great teacher you are! Many thanks!

wow! that's plain simple brilliant (the business card)...awesome explanation! Thank you!
Your videos are amazing! I have been learning more about my camera and how to use it better and your videos have taught me quite a lot more than any other photography videos. Subscribed ^^
Best of luck Mike , you are the best.
Your videos are brilliant!!
Thanks, I liked the card at 45 degrees, will have to try the poly cup with the bottom cut off. We had a couple of photos taken aound the table recently by a professional with the flash bouncing off the ceiling. They were the best ever.
You're welcome +Bryan Hannaford If you have a clean white / neutral coloured wall ceiling to bounce off that's the best method - MIKE :-)
Amazing Mate. So glad for this one. Cheers.......John.
i too am agree with u ,rally.so simple.to follow .simple theories are complicated to

it works! very helpful. thanks mike!
So glad I found you. Simple and easy so even I can understand ;-)

Love the business card trick. It would have been very helpful when I was trying to take some portraits of my oldest daughter last weekend... just a week late! ;)
Good stuff. I will have to try this technique this weekend for a party I am going to. Great instructional video!
Thank you very much Mike. I am a big fan of your videos

wow, that was very very interesting. Thank you for posting this video. Have you done one on using flash in aperture, shutter, program or manual mode? how is it different and what you should watch out for. I left auto a month ago and I'm still trying to figure this out on this.
Great vids, thanks all very helpful to a beginner
Mike, I love your hints and tips. Here's one for you: I use Rizla Cigarette papers to diffuse in camera flash. You can double it up for stronger diffusion. This is particularly usefus for when photographing badly lit gigs as I had to recently in a jazz club.
Thanks Roz de-Layen Vian - that's a brilliant idea for a DIY flash diffuser. Wish I'd thought of that... :-)
nice one...
Thanks Kerry Freeman
I used the 'business card' method for a few months before I saw this video :D
since I don't own a flashgun yet (invested in some L lenses first) I wanted to make my flash light softer somehow, so I thought about the way flashguns can rotate and figured that if I use a pocket mirror I can have the same control. So it's not exactly a business card, but I think a pocket mirror works better as it is reflecting all of the light without losing it :)
Love it! thanks!
Thank you - Mike
Great easy and basic stuff, thanks!!
+P//MBECH thank you - MIKE
Your kids are SO tolerant!! ;-) Awesome video (as usual) :-)
Thank you Mike very helpful.
very well explained!!
VERY GOOD TUTORIAL!
Hey thank you for letting us know. Always great to know when we've helped.
Creative, Simple...Mike, Thanks
Thanks +kim mak - MIKE
Mike my wife made me some white and off white cloth mini like bags that I can just drop down over the flash and they make the light much better. The off white gives the person just a slight toned down look that I really like.
Nice idea Rick. And so much more fun than just buying more shit on the promises of marketeers...
Perfect. Very useful tricks ... thanks.
Thanks for the good tutorial. I am still waiting for the delivery of my first external flash but started to experiment with the built-in. For months I was struggling when taking indoor photos. I did not like them without the flash as they were dark/noisy/blurry but I did not like the built in flash either. It was too harsh with dark contrasting shadows.
Finally I have realized that in many cases it is better to turn off the TTL mode of the internal flash and set it manually (my M50 has 3 power levels for the internal flash). I had good results by setting the power of the built in flash to the minimal level and setting the exposure in manual mode to a level where the ambient light and the flash light blends much nicer than in auto mode.
Thanks Gabor 🙂🙏. You've nailed it buddy. The best way to find out what works best is always to try different ways of doing it. Indeed a blend of manual ambient and flash exposures gives much more pleasing results. Have a go at setting the ambient exposure about -1 stop to a bounced / diffuse flash. Nice light and subject stands out from background without it going dark. Best wishes for 2020... MIKE
AWESOME VIDEO BUDDY, great to see another witty U.K. Ha

Brilliant!
Thank you ..nice idea
Thank you, this helped me a lot, it can't replace a speedlight but it'll do for a month or two :)
Really Nice Explanation. Loved it!! Subscribed :)
No worries Mark
Thanks a lot Mike!
awesome Mike. thank you so much for this video.
:-) John Christopher Yapchapco
thankyou so much for the video
Interesting way to show diffused light. Got the link from your recent emailing...
I use a 5" bounce card on my pro level flash when I cannot bounce off the walls or ceiling. Maybe, I can save money next time and tape 4 or 5 of my business cards together instead buying a new bounce card.......Well done as always...
Philip
NYC Area
Thank you Philip from NYC :-)
Thank you soooo very much i needed this. couldnt find videos on how to better utilize the built in camera flash. i dont always like using it as i get a yellow or reddish hue so i practice using iso & exposure compensation. i take a lot of pictures at church on sundays. lighting is poor. not everyone can afford to purchase these expensive external flash and additional lighting gear. the diy diffusers are a plus. thanks a bunch! i subscribed... :-)
Gr8 Video ... Thank You ...
.
Nice video - thanks
Thank you - good luck and have fun :-)
You could use high wattage tungsten bulbs in desk lamps instead. BUT make sure there's no daylight sneaking in anywhere and set a tungsten white balance on the camera or the images will be yellow. Or you could use daylight balanced bulbs in the lamps.
Really great tips mate, i normally use napkins when im somewhere in like a restaurant
Thanks Zydiz - Fantastic idea... MIKE 👌
great tips
Cool! Thanks!
Another Great Video Mike!
Hooked to your channel :)
Also, fun team you have on your hands for making that visual explanation of Light As Water lol
