- This film explaining focal length is an excerpt from our photography training DVD available form www.photographycourses.biz/pho.... Another “Blast From the Past,” but great stuff, none the less. Man, this refresher course is making me wanna go out and take a few shots!
Great to hear!
Still the best videos on photography basics after 12 years
Thank you - I appreciate the comment!
@uiop7890aik Hi - thanks for your comment. No the focal length and distance won't affect the exposure. If you're shooting in manual mode most consumer lenses will decrease the aperture as you zoom the lens longer. So you might take one shot perfectly, zoom in and the next one will be under exposed so keep an eye on your light meter. If you're in auto, AV or TV you don't need to worry because the camera will automatically adjust the shutter speed accordingly.
I have started learning photography recently and started watching lots of youtube videos. When i stumbled upon your video in search, i have hit the gold!. Believe me the way you explain and put things together in your videos covering each topic is incredible!!!. THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING SIR!

thank you +Onur Gürel please do also share it , so we can make more free videos - Melissa pp Mike
Hi - No just changing DOF would only affect sharpness and wouldn't compress the beach huts together, change the field of view (how much is included side to side) or alter the distortion effect like in the wide angle shot where Tasha's face was all stretched. Thanks for your kind comment.
Amazing! Your way to explain complicated stuffs with easy words is genial! I didn't understand why my pictures looked so flat, now I know :-D Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
It's been challenging, yet enriching, to slow down and complete the tasks/practices at the end of the lessons for the Ultimate Beginners Course. Reviewing those principles have been enlightening after so many years of being out of the game. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm finding out that each lens and the corresponding focal lengths are truly capable of certain things and have a window of how they function best; and this is really evident when using a prime lens and seeing what it can focus on at different distances and depths. Such eye-opening practices.
Mike, when you explain it - it is easy to understand and somehow quite logical !
Good job ! Well done !
To say nothing about your accent !
Much thanks.. New D5200 camera for Christmas, and after the myriad of Videos I have watched thus far, this was the best. Exactly what I wanted.. SAME PICTURE, three different settings and then a final compare. I will watch more of yours if they are all this informative.
Thank you damnBORG delighted they're helping.. Please help me make more by sharing them with other photographers...
Wow that was great ! I just saw another video where we get this effect on picture when the aperture is changed. And here I see the same effect by using just focal length, Great and very simple trick !
Thank you Advait Thakur - it's a combination of both focal length AND aperture. Longer focal length changes the field of view as well as having a shallower depth of field. Have a look at this video for more... www.photographycourses.biz/focal_length.html
Thank you for your very informative videos! I am learning how to use my new Canon Rebel T6s and have picked up some very valuable tips by watching your channel.
Thanks +PhotographerSue I'm happy to help. Please help me make more by sharing your favourites with other photographers on sites and social media.. - MIKE :-)
Very clearly explained and demonstrated! Favourited for future reference.
Mike, you've got me looking at my lens bag in a TOTALLY different way than I have since I began photography. Up until now, I have always been taught to envy the gurus who towed around a cargo trailer full of primes, professing that zoom lens were one of the greatest heresies to the photographic discipline. And I have totally enjoyed hearing your opposing view on that subject. So, once again, my thanks!! Really enjoying my photography review down memory lane!!
Thanks John. 🙏🙂 I'm running a webinar on the subject which you might find interesting in a few weeks. Did it last week and it proved extremely popular and sold out (100 places) in days. Also doing weekly challenges and competions called #photolockdown which might interest you. Couple links below if you'd like to check them out... MIKE

Mike Browne
Yes I will. No problem.
Thank you!!!
To be honest I don't know what the measurement is - and you don't need to know. So long as you know a high number is a long focal length and a low number is a short focal length. Then when someone says something was taken with a long, medium or short lens you know what they're on about. There's no 'correct' focal length for an image. You just need the one that works for the image you want to create.
ahhh..finally I get it. Thanks so much for explaining it so well. xxx
No worries Jade Fisher - there's loads more in the full film which is available at www.photographycourses.biz/photography_dvd.html
Thanks :) Nice video, that's what i was looking for ! I have a question ? does longer focal lengths affect exposure as well ? because when you move back the reflective light reaching the sensor loses some of its intensity ??
Mike, thank you. This is so informative and explained very simply. You have a new subscriber!!
Thank you Randothol H
. Please share any you find helpful around because it helps me make more like it... MIKE :-)
I will share you around on Facebook! No doubt it takes plenty of effort to make these videos, but clearly you are inspired by passing down your knowledge and tips for novices and take enjoyment from it.

Thank you for your kind words. I've never heard of 'F/x.y'. Just Googled it and all I can find is some fairly incomprehensible info about mathematics. Please say more...
The great tips, Thank! Mike...,
very useful information, thank you.
fantastic video. very informative input. my good wishes to you sir.
Thank you Shashi - MIKE
Another great lesson, hope I can remember all this :-)
Another Beautiful "Short" Length Lesson! Thanks To You/Natasha And The Mother, The VideoGrapher. My Question Is, What Is the Best Situation To Use Different Focal Length Lenses ?
Hi Jeevan,
Best situation needs different focal lens, for landscape its best to use wide focal length, for portrait its nice to start with 35-50mm, for more info www.photographycourses.biz/courses/understanding-camera-lenses . or
If you're a beginner and feel frustrated and confused by your camera and lenses, you will be better to start at the beginning with the Ultimate Beginners Coursewhich has all you need to become the photographer You want to be. www.photographycourses.biz/courses/ultimate-beginners-photography-course - Melissa pp Mike
much thanks!
About 50mm on a full frame sensor.
Mike.. I love your vids. Learned so much from you. I am beginner and wanted to see what tripod and head I should get. Looking to get carbon fiber like you recommended in another video. Looking to spend around $500 most.
Thanks Led :-)
Hi! You are a great teacher! I understand things more clearly now thanks to you and your videos!
Thanks Hanna. Yes you can use 12mm but it depends on what you want the shots to look like. If you can be up close to the action and want that intimate feel you get from shooting a couple of feet away it'll be great. If you are at a distance then that action will be a little pea sized bit in the shot. ...
It sounds to me like you need a bit of help with focal lengths and how to use them creatively to achieve different looks and feels. Guessing there's other stuff like that I could help you with too. Please take a look at my Beginners Course which where I can guide you through all this and more. It's online, 5 weeks long and you can try a free sample at the link below... MIKE :-)

What a great explanation!!!!
Thank you - MIKE :-)
@YomsVideos Sure was :-)
You’re welcome
Thanks for sharing mate- a great lesson for a new photographer :-)
It was a Nikon 18-70 and a nikon 70-200
I must add something to this vid, that I can't ignore.
When you change your focal length and also distance yourself from the subject, DOF does not change as much as if you were changing ONLY your focal length. The farther you are from the subject, the greater your DOF will be. Therefore "zooming in" (using a longer lens) but in the same time increasing the distance does not give your the same dramatic effect as chaing from a full-body shot to a headshot only (70->200mm) from the same spot. :)
love it
certainly helpful..thumbs up
Hi mike! Was this shot on aperture priority? Sorry i just bought my very first dslr yesterday. Great videos. Thanks so much
Hi Michi - yes it was - MIKE :-)
Thank u!
Superb and Crystal clear explanation • with 18 mm focal length and moving back will the picture be less distorted. What would be the right distance from the subject to avoid distortion. Grateful if you kindly explain this aspect
It depends on the lens and sensor size. I recommend you run this as a test for yourself so you can see where it is using your own camera and lens... MIKE
Your explanations are indeed by far the clearest for us beginners :) Now if i can just find videos on taste to tell me whether the second or third shot is "right" :)
Thank you Ha ha, there is no such thing as "Right". There is only the question "Is this what I wanted to achieve?" Answer yes - it's right. Answer no - ask what needs to change and try it again... Video link below may help with this ... MIKE :-)
www.photographycourses.biz/videos/reviews-and-help/help-and-advice/how_to_be_happy_with_your_photos.html
thanks for the reply :) I'll give that a watch!
Still useful in 2019. Great tutorial...

really, really good video man
thank you gytn25 :) - MELISSA ( for Mike )
Great Video. very easy to understand :)
Thank you WoohhooTV
Pleasure :-)
nice :) also kudos DIY Pop Up Flash Diffuser thought that was pretty clever mikey :)
Thanks
Did you set up the same Aperture in 3 differences focal length? if yes, I learned that at the same aperture the longer of focal length the shallower of DOF.
You got it Hai - MIKE :-)
Isn't that called DOF (depth of field) ?
very useful effect, I rely a lot on it when I use Cinema 4D, to bring final renders to realistic pictures.
Very useful video
Thanks gökhan. Please continue helping me make more like it by sharing them with other photographers on forums, Facebook, ClickASnap, Flickr etc. - MIKE
Mike, A superb explanation! Of the videos I've watched, you give a very understandable explanation that is clear, concise, and well done! Thank you!
thank you +Timothy Beaulier happy it helped you and like it - Melissa pp Mike
Very informative Mike. But I want to clarify if longer focal length is better than wide angle lense for portrait? Coz a a result using the last lense resulted to great image to the model. I'm planning to buy 35mm but is it still good for portrait?
Thanks rcgrapa Focal length to use depends what you want to achieve from the portrait. Let's say you want something dramatic or need the environment included then a wider 35mm would be good. If you want to isolate the person then a longer 150mm would be good. Sorry there's no definitive answer. Have a look at this video series www.photographycourses.biz/focal_length.html
