Photography Tip - Shoot Professional Looking Head Shots At Home
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 21 сен 2013
- Need a head shot or portrait for your driving license, work profile of web page? Model Abbie's agent asked her for some new head shots which needed to be clear representations of Abbie with out make up or cool looks. In this case a head shot is a look at the blank canvas of the model without loads of make up or styling.
As with all photography the key is to think about what you're doing and use the building blocks of photography to make it come together. Block 1 would be to find great light. Block 2 is to work out the composition, 3 what focal length do you need to achieve that etc...
Join us for a look at how to shoot low tech head shots in great light almost regardless of the location. Get comfy - this is a longer one...

When Abby held the tortoise she had the best natural smile. I know models are not always supposed to smile but she really showed some personality at that moment.
Abbie has tons of that +Gordon Lejeune - MIKE :-)
nice to watch a pro who knows what they are doing and not interested in the usual look look at me and here to help you.great videos and very informative
Thank you ian b If you like it please share it around because this will help me make more free videos :-)
Nothing better than an informative video with a bit of humour thrown in. Great work Mike.
Thank you David! -Melissa pp Mike
Thanks Abbie. We did and it's always fun working with you..
These are some of the best photography how to videos on RUclips.
Thank you Dave Saunders
I agree mikes videos have been a massive help for me
Thanks guys :-)
Thank you - making people feel at ease is all part of it. I'm going to make some films about that area of photography soon.
I agree. Photography is about being in control of light, lens and camera to get the image YOU want - not the one you let the camera take for you.
You also involve and respect your model, assistant in this tutorial. They are not like just statutes, or with bored expression who don't know what's going on :)
That's was a great fact, she is born 7 hours after her. the model :) I like to know such facts, they are amazing.
Great video again, I like way you explain and the way you end it
Thank you. I thought I'd answered Kevin - apologies if I missed it. Colour or black and white is a creative choice for you the photographer - or if you're doing it professionally a choice for your client. It's a bit like saying it's better to have a grey car than a blue or yellow one. There's no rule - if you like B&W shoot it. The great thing is you can have both with digital photography.
Mike, You're my favorite RUclips Photographer. You're fun to watch, practical, and you make it easy to understand. Thanks for all that you do.
Brilliant tutorial!!! Abby looked fab!
thanks Mike and thanks for Abbies humor and your trusty camera assistant. Nice job teaching.=)
Sorry if I missed your comment Kevin. Colour or black and white is a creative choice for you the photographer - or if you're doing it professionally a choice for your client. That's a gorgeous little log shed
Mike you are the greatest at teaching photography on RUclips, you explain clearly how, when, where and why, you are an original. open a photography school here in the U.S.A !
MR. BROWNE...YOUR THE BEST...YOUR ONE OF THE ONLY PHOTGRAPHER I KNOW THAT GETS BACK TO YOUR REPIES...I REALLY DO RESPECT THAT THANKS....FOR ALL THE ADVICE

You treat Abby with much respect and took some awesome photos of her.
Sorry you feel it came across that way Miley... MIKE :-/
Mike , excellent tutorials ! Your presentation is realistic not all stuffy (laid back) not to technical as in making the tutorials boring. Looking forward to seeing and learning new ideals and techniques. Thanks !
i have been watching many channels , but this channel explains everything the best way possible
Thank you
Thank you. Abbie's Ace.
Haha I laughed so hard at the end when she brought over the turtle and you just walked away with "Oh god, what's the point"
Good presentation. Not too techie with some humor thrown in and you have a winner that sticks with you. Thanks Mike
Hmmm I'll think on it. I'm not into posing people myself because i like to photograph the person being themselves rather than something I've turned them into. I don't shoot studio portraiture for this reason and only occasionally shoot portraits at all. And they are mostly in the subjects own environment. I chat and talk with them and take photos as they reveal emotions, happiness quirkiness etc. I'll think on it though. Thanks for the idea...
Thank you. The lens I use most is a Nikon 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5 AF-S DX variable aperture kit lens but it works great.
Good to see you guys back fit n healthy again
No worries. There's no right or wrong with these things - there's only what looks good to the photographer or subject. Some will like it some won't. As a general 'rule of thumb' side lighting older women probably won't be appreciated by them - but it could still make a great image if you want to bring out character through lines and wrinkles....
hahaha! Abbie is such a trip!! What a character lol great tips Mike.
Exactly the help I was hoping to find on RUclips! Excellent tutorial. I appreciate the "what not to do's" at the end. Thank you!
Thanks for making this
Excellent as usual. And having a keen sense of humor that you definitely have, can also put your subject as ease too I believe
.
You sir make photography fun n a joy to keep exceling after ty!! btw luv how you emancipate out in personality :)
Thank you Dave Jr
Great pointers and very well explained. Thank you very much.
What a fantastic garden! So many photo opportunities :)
Your explanations are making so much sense in the www available options. I mean there are so many videos on youtube and on the internet but your videos make so much sense.

Some absolute gems in there Mike. Another informative video with quality and humour!
Thanks Paul Humphries
Thank you for all tutorials !
Terrific video; Mike. It's all about attention to detail for me and following a routine, or flow to avoid silly oversights, Thanks
I use auto focus set to single point but move the point around the frame so it's in the place I where want the camera to focus.
I use evaluative 99% of the time. There is no right or wrong lens to use. There's only the lens or focal length which will achieve the image you want to take. If you have a clear background then 80mm would work fine. I had lots of clutter around Abbie. I could have gone somewhere else but I chose that place because of the great light. I then chose my focal length so I could use that place and not have the clutter in shot.
Very practical and easy solutions. Great info. Thanks for taking the time to post this.
thank you! please do share it too so we can make more. dragonfist25 - Melissa pp Mike
Great Mike, what a fun video. I'm glad you are feeling better mate. I really like the comic element in this video, it breaks down the seriousness of what has just been explained.
awsome as always ! Ty Mike !
Fantastic lesson. I enjoy the humor and all the information in your videos and the fact that you talk to instead of at as some lesson videos tend to do. I am just upset that I just found this channel but am also glad that I did. Subscribed!
Thank you Chad Roeder Please help me grow the channel and make more free vids by sharing them here, on Facebook, forums etc :-)
Thanks for demos! I'll have to watch again to remember enough. Wow! So much at once.
Yes watch and watch until it's like second nature 🤓
Nice one Mike, glad you're back!

thanks for the time and effort you have put in to these videos.
Such useful tips, Mike. Thanks a lot!
mike you are just so good to watch and learn THANKS
I prefer zoom lenses because of the flexibility to change focal length quickly and easily. I'm not saying this is right or the only way to go. Other than a vague idea of long, medium or short, I never know what focal length i'm going to use until I see how the image looks in the viewfinder. Sometimes a change of only 5mm cam make all the difference which is why i prefer zooms.
WOW... Awesome, very informative. Thank you!!!
Great advice! I needed this! Thanks!
Oh and it's nice to see the use of a reflector, iv got to get one after seeing how it's used
Excellent. I just wanted to say, after digging through RUclips for tutorials on photography, I have found your vids to be the most practical, pleasant, and helpful. Keep 'em up, and hope you are on the mend as well.
an old 135 will probably be a great lens. It's not the kit that makes great photos it's you who does that by working within the limitations of the kit you have / can afford. For example it wouldn't be great for wildlife unless you can get very close to it or for interiors because the field of view will be too narrow.
that's one the best tutorials I've ever seen ... Big thanks man .. greetings from Egypt ;)
Thank you yahia elganainy Please help me grow the channel and make more free vids by sharing them here, on Facebook, forums etc. Some find it easier to find their way around the films on my website where they are categorised -www.photographycourses.biz/photography_videos.html

Thank you. It's a matter of choice for the person being photographed or the photographer.

Sure thing =)
14:18 Wow ! What a great shot ! Wonderful ratio of light and shade and great colour tone !
Thanks Anthony Mantas
Mike... You're a Superstar!! Love your style and ur videos
Excellent Mike.....
Best video so far, so informative and so much fun packed into it. :)
Whilst the wide aperture does make a lovely soft background the 50mm shot I took a shorter lens distorts the face a bit when in close and the field of view isn't narrow enough to exclude the clutter either side.
The 85mm 1.8G is touted by many as providing performance that well exceeds its price. I am picking up an 85mm 1.8G for sure.
As for the reflector: Photography requires light. It's all about light. He was evening out the light between one side and the other. In that case, it wasn't so much side-lighting as he was reducing the very apparent darkness across one half of her face (and he did that by evening the lighting out between the two sides with the reflector).
Brilliant! Loved it.
Just brilliant and fun! Thanks.
You're welcome - thanks paleozon
That was actually great advice, thanks a lot. I'm no pro nor do i pretend to be, but this is certainly helpful :D
Thank you - though a couple of people don't agree now. Can't please all the people all the time :-)
Awesome teachings yes I will take on board and really enjoy the challenges.
Hey Mike! I would really really love to see a 'posing' video from you. I'm trying to get into portraiture and I'm having issues telling how my models (friends) on how to pose.
Thanks for making this video. It was very helpful:)
LOVE your videos!... just found you today, and I find the ones I've watched very entertaining and informative! Cheers
thank you jimmy! please do share our video and subscribe so we can make more! - Melissa pp Mike
I like Abby, too cute and funny!! Thanks Mike, very clear explaination!!!
thanks mike, i really learn a lot from that short but fantastic lesson.
As always perfect!
Another great video from Mike. Abby the innocent looking model.
Great video as usual Mike.
Wow. Thank you. Glad you have a ghostly version of me following you around :-)
Omg thanks for the tips. Well done.
Good idea for a video - thanks
Great video Mike - cheers!
I watched a couple of your videos, you deserve more subscribers. There are some photography channels with 1,000,000 subscribers and they do not provide even half of what you show in your videos. I guess people, in general, are ignorant indeed, especially on youtube lol
Thanks for this great video, Mike! :-) Just love your style!
You have a gift Mike. Keep them coming! :)
Love your videos thanks again.
Mike you are awesome man!! I am beginner for photography!! Was exploring a lot, and found all useful necessary guiding tips in your videos.. you are great!! So simple to understand.. Thank you so much!!
I really love your videos. They have great tips and advice. I used some the techniques in this video today to get some good shots. Keep up the good work helping us out
Great tips! Thank you
Thanks for the quick response Mike. I'll simply bring both lenses and see which look i like best. And i'll figure out the aperture that will give me enough depth of field to get all the faces in focus. Thanks again!
No worries Noordstede take your time and think your way through the shot. My 7 Building Blocks of Photography 7 week course is all about this kind of thing because you have to be able to think like a photographer in order to be a photographer - www.photographycourses.biz/7_building_blocks_of_photography.html
Best training! thank you!
Steps outside the kitchen and forgets the camera on the shelf...
