You are, by far, the most pleasant, understandable, and enjoyable photographer on the internet, Mike! So down to earth, positive, and you explain everything so clearly and normally... Thanks you so much for your efforts in bringing us all these great videos so that we can become better artists with our cameras :)
We use Radio Mics. The little black thing clipped to my shirt is the mic, there's a transmitter in my pocket and a receiver on the video camera connected through an XLR socket
Yes that would be a good option. I didn't do it because i didn't want to get into post production in this video as well as composition. I'll do an HDR video sometime soon.
Mike Browne I wanna thank you for making these videos and sharing your knowledge on photography, its really helping me understand my camera and photography more. Thank you.
Thank you. I don't have Much photography from Aus but I do have a video from when I was Whale watching - even manages a couple of nice pics... It'll be on here sometime in the next few weeks...
Thank you for an excellent tutorial, I have never heard nor read the subject described so concisely nor memorably. You sir have a great teaching style - kudos.
Hi Mike (& co), I've spent this weekend going through almost all your videos and I've learnt a lot from the last few hours than I have reading books and magazines over the last year. Thank you for time and effort putting these together, I personally very appreciative of that. I look forward to seeing more of your videos
Mike, I've been watching your videos for the last few weeks. Got to say I think they are the best I've seen on youtube thus far. I consider myself to be pretty well-versed in photography, but these videos have gotten me to think twice about my approach. I also love how easy your videos are to watch. I truly enjoy them and look forward to learning more!
Thanks Mike for all the amazing videos. If there is ever a topic I want to learn about your videos are always my first "Go to" to get answers. I thoroughly enjoy your videos.
Hi Mike, just wanted to tell you that your channel is my fave photography channel on RUclips. I have learned so much from your tutorials. Thank you for all your efforts and for sharing your knowledge.
The most clear and practical examples of this compositional concept I've seen. And I loved the use of the balloon. You have the gift of storytelling, Mike. :)
That has really done a lot to explain negative space in an easy no nonsense way as I really love taking pictures of negative space. Fantastic video. Really like all of your videos. Keep up the great work.
I am seeing all your videos and it is being very informative and helpful... but, this one has been amazingly instructive and I've absolutely enjoyed it: thank you.
Brilliant video! I am loving the picture with the two boats, looks stunning. Also the way you set up your video camera was amazing. I had the feeling that you were walking inside an finished still picture.
very informative and helpful for me mike,so glad i found you ,you are number one with tips and as i'm just starting one of your courses i already learned so much in such a short time, the balloon was worth the wait
Thank you very much (mike) you're my ideal ... Actually you give me the motivation to continue ...After all the disappointments ...really, You're wonderful.
i just discovered your yt channel. this was one of your best produced tutorials so far after binge watching a dozen of your videos. well done, sir. well done.
hello there! thank you for the kind words and would help us to make more if you may share our videos to social media platforms = Melissa pp Mike www.photographycourses.biz/videos
Why thank you sir. There's loads like it with accompanying articles too on my site. All searchable by category and skill level. link below if you fancy taking a look... MIKE :-) www.photographycourses.biz/videos
Hi, Mike. I must say I have learnt a lot from your videos. Made me rethink a lot of concepts concerning photography. Never has it come to my mind empty space can be that useful for photo composition. Thank you so much for the quality work you make.
Another great video, thanks! I seem to be quite addicted to your channel and im learning more and more with every one i watch. Thanks for taking the time to make these fantastic videos.
Thank you Stuart Fergus - Please help us spread the word and grow the community by 'liking' 'G+ing', sharing our videos and linking to us on photo forums, Facebook etc
This was just a masterpiece. You struggled with the damn balloon the whole time, but the end was just a grand finale. I´m very glad I found your channel and saw all your videos in past week, I learned a lot..
Thanks :-) We're working trough captioning to get it accurate but it can take up to 2 hours a film so it's slow going getting through them all. Well get there though and glad it made you laugh...
New to photography and sometimes struggle to find things to go and photograph. This negative space style photography, is a great perspective to inject some creativity into the brain!
I love it Scott and am something of a negative space junkie. If you're struggling to find things to photograph, practise really looking at shapes, patterns, light and shade. Don't just walk about hoping to find somethings. Another way is to go see things that inspire and interest you. If you stay somewhere you know well you won't notice the good stuff all around you... MIKE
Mike Browne ye it's a really cool take on photography. Got into this hobby around november last year. The other day I came across pictures I thought were good when I first had my camera... I went back to shoot the same subjects the other week, as my 'eye' for composition has come a long way since! I really enjoy the war memorial sites and subjects. The other subjects im really keen to get photographing is all the old welsh castles dotted around wales! When I look at subjects now, I think how would it look to the left, drop lower with a wide angle. From above. From straight on but slightly just off the floor. Closer in, further back, from behind etc. Really enjoying the camera right now. Shame I didn't come across your channel sooner. I have been binge watching your videos, the car motion video is brilliant mike! Thank you for the video's and effort you put in to making these for us.
Mike great info but don't you think that while negative space can help to create impact in a image, sometimes a small like the balloon or even occasionally a larger object needs to be there for balance as well? Alistair
Ok I just finnished the video and now you are the master at brilliant! now I know why you were carring that darn ballon the whole time. I had and Idea you were incorporating it in a photo, but the final result is just AMAZING.
Useful as always. It is a pleasure to watch your way of sharing your experience with us. Although, I am still hoping that one day you will start again showing how a smartphone can be used to tell a story as a professional camera does. I watched the older videos related to smartphones but since then the smartphone cameras reached a much higher quality. We always have with us our smartphone and sometimes we don't have the courage to use it. Best regards !
Thanks Nastase. I may do more with a phone but to be honest I'm not sure I see the need to. As you said phone image quality is wonderful now but the technique is exactly the same as before or when using a mirrorless / DSLR / compact... MIKE :-)
some of you guys didn't understand why there was a balloon.. i got it but just can't explain.. picture speaks.. nice Mr. Mike. the balloon has its story in this video.
Wonderful video tutorial, best think about your way of teaching things is that you just dont show the technical stuff with all the equipment, rather you explain how things can be done and give good pointers to think creatively. thanks again , have a nice day mike..
Very well presented as usual Mike, loved how you used the ballon in the end shot...negative space it hard to get right when starting out. We all love to get close with are zooms and fancy lenses, but stepping back really works better with some shots and knowing when to use it is the real trick. Great stuff, keep them coming...Marcus
Thank you. If I made the aperture smaller for greater depth of field & best optical performance, the shutter speed would get slower. To avoid camera shake caused by slower shutter speed I'd have to increase ISO which I didn't want to do because it would lose image quality. The other option would have been a tripod
Brilliant videos mate! Very inspiring and educational, every time I watch one of your videos I wanna go out and shoot something. Thankyou so much for all your efforts and tutorials here in land of You Tube it is very much appreciated. Look forward to the next vid. Cheers Kenny
hiya mike i love your plain english approach to explaining things, that bloon must have really been hacking you off by the time you finished the shoot. cheers mick
Thanks for your insight...interesting to hear what goes through your mind when you take a picture. By the way, I'm surprised you didn't drop your camera being tethered to the balloon...I would have!!
One of your best free photography tips. I have watched this one a few times over the years. Helped me a lot to 'think like a photographer'. But should I buy the '7 blocks?' Still not sure if I am at the right level right now to step in. But..thanks a lot for this one Mike!
Thanks Wouter, have you completed UBC? That would be a good guide as to whether 7BB would be right for you. Dont forget ALL my courses have a full money back guarantee. www.photographycourses.biz/courses
Hi! I just stumbled upon your channel and I am really enjoying it! I like your progressive problem solving steps, which helps us think like a photographer. Thanks for taking your time and creating these awesome videos!
Brilliant tutorial as always, with the same sense of humour 😃 That balloon was giving me an anxiety attack but I knew there was a point to putting up with it annoying you LOL
Thank you Richard. Please help us spread the word about our films and grow the community by 'liking' 'G+ing', sharing them and linking to us on photo forums, Facebook etc
This is great!!! LOL... i was giggling the whole time watching you fight with that balloon!!!! I once bought 6 of those balloons to do a photoshoot of my daughter, so i know how it feels!!!! ;)
This was really useful, i gonna go out and try out some negative space photography c: You should defiantly make more tutorials like this. An awesome picture by the way :D
Another great video, I love images with negative space in them but could of told you why or how to use them now I do! You have to watch to the end to understand why Mike is carrying around that dam ballon lol.
Mr. Browne you demonstrate an immeasurable amount of patience as evidenced by the fact you didn't let that annoying balloon go after the first 2 minutes. I have not patience as evidenced by the fact that I wanted to jump through the screen and pop it! Awesome video though, many thanks!
Hi Mike, In the begining of the video you mentioned something about breaking the rules to take a picture from great to amazing. Can you share some sample pictures where the rules have been deliberately broken to acieve a great result. I think your shot with those 2 boats is one and is truly amazing. Would love to see more of such shots and the thought process behing them. Thank you for your amazing work.
You are, by far, the most pleasant, understandable, and enjoyable photographer on the internet, Mike!
So down to earth, positive, and you explain everything so clearly and normally...
Thanks you so much for your efforts in bringing us all these great videos so that we can become better artists with our cameras :)
Absolutely agree with this.
I had to watch to the very end, I knew that bloody red balloon had to have a pay off. As usual, you delivered it beautifully Mike.
Thanks for hanging in there Justin Jones . Glad you enjoyed it
I learned two things from this video: How to use negative space, and to never tie something distracting to your wrist when you photograph! :-)
:-) DickyTracy
We use Radio Mics. The little black thing clipped to my shirt is the mic, there's a transmitter in my pocket and a receiver on the video camera connected through an XLR socket
I meant to completely ignore it and never mention it until the end but you're right. It was a pain and my resolve broke :-/
WOW - thank you ALL for your kind comments. Really, truly appreciate it.
Yes that would be a good option. I didn't do it because i didn't want to get into post production in this video as well as composition. I'll do an HDR video sometime soon.

Im a 17 year old photography enthusiast with only a phone camera at the moment. Thankyou for all the tips! You earned a subscriber. Love from India!!
Mike, I've been watching your videos for the last few weeks. Got to say I think they are the best I've seen on youtube thus far. I consider myself to be pretty well-versed in photography, but these videos have gotten me to think twice about my approach. I also love how easy your videos are to watch. The lonely bench photo with "I Love You" balloon is just stunning! Just above any "guru" level...
Thanks Mike for all the amazing videos. If there is ever a topic I want to learn about your videos are always my first "Go to" to get answers. I thoroughly enjoy your videos.
that last picture i was imagining the exact image and thinking that would look really good when i first saw the sky and the bench. Wow it really is :)
Hi Mike, just wanted to tell you that your channel is my fave photography channel on RUclips. I have learned so much from your tutorials. Thank you for all your efforts and for sharing your knowledge.
A brilliant work Mike. Love the way you use emphasis. "Here's a LOVELY example of negative space" Great work.
Found this great video 4 years after you posted it. Timeless. 👍

Thank you for the video's and effort you put in to making these for us.
Fantastic job at simplifying the concept of negative space. Oh, and the baloon idea was brilliant!
Thanks Johan
Thank you
Negative Space adds impact and peace to a composition - how can it possibly do both?
Mike great info but don't you think that while negative space can help to create impact in a image, sometimes a small like the balloon or even occasionally a larger object needs to be there for balance as well?
Alistair
Great video Mike - really liked the shot at the end.

Wow, thank you... negative space does make a difference for that quiet feeling😊
Sure does J Bello. I love it... MIKE :-)
Good stuff and well done for persevering with the balloon that has a mind of its own! Always good to learn from your knowledge.
Very well presented as usual Mike, loved how you used the ballon in the end shot...negative space it hard to get right when starting out.
