Photography Tips - Histograms Explained

  • Histograms are a graphic representation of the tones recorded in an image. Sounds complicated but I promise it isn't. They're a very useful tool for checking your exposures because you can't always rely on your camera's LCD.
    Histograms work brilliantly in conjunction with your camera's highlight warnings which flash on and off on areas where the image is overexposed and there's no detail recorded. There will be times when your camera makes the wrong exposure (www.photographycourses.biz/wro...) because it thinks the world is grey and that's how it make the exposure. But if the scene you're shooting isn't mid grey it'll probably get it wrong. And the histogram will help you sort that out.
    In this vid we'll explain histograms - what they mean and how to read them.

    Hi Mike - I picked up my first DSLR almost a year ago knowing nothing about photography. Almost everything I've learned has been from youtube and after watching literally hundreds of videos, I can say that yours are without a doubt some of the best out there. You're never heavy handed and you never talk down to your audience. Everything is easy to understand and always helpful.
    You, sir, are awesome

    I don't know much about mirrorless cameras, but I do think they will become more and more popular. Over the next few years i think we'll see some big changes in cameras. Don't get too hung up on what camera is best. So long as you can take control of it when you need to and change the lens / focal length you should be OK.

    This video was made almost seven years ago and it’s as relevant or more so today in explanation of Histogram. This is one of the very best explanation I’ve ever seen in many months of learning photography on so many channels. Many talk about Histogram, but few until this video actually do show and tell in actual explanation to convey actually what they mean. So I’m friggin thankful for a video like this that use demonstration to explain the point. Now I really understand things far better.

    I haven't taken any serious photos since using a 35mm black and white Pentax S1a (old in those days) over 30 years ago. However I recently bought a Canon 700D with a kit 18-55mm lens. Using your videos has untangled the whole process and slowly I'm begining to take the type of photos I did "way back then". Thanks for your easy, practical style in passing on your obvious extensive knowledge, you gave me enough to leave full Auto alone and go into Av preferred, plus a few other "creative modes".

    This is really useful, thanks. I also keep in mind, however, that there is often no "correct" exposure, depending on the feeling you're trying to create in your image. Underexposure creates more drama, overexposure is often dreamlike or nostalgic. But if you don't know how to control your exposure, you'll always be shooting more or less accidentally.

    • @MikeBrowne
      @MikeBrowne  Год назад +1

      @How to Sober - 💯 Yes yes and yes. There is no 'correct exposure' - it's a creative choice for each of us...MB

    • @howtosober
      @howtosober Год назад

      @@MikeBrowne Thanks. I shot very instinctively the first couple of years, and noticed that especially with documentary and travel portraits I leaned toward underexposing for shadows and backlighting. I really love the mood those images create. Then, when I decided to increase my technical knowledge, I started watching all this content about "proper" exposure, "proper" focus, etc. and got self-conscious about whether my photos were actually any good. I think it depends on whether you're using photography as an art form or simply trying to accurately represent a place, event etc. in a general way. For me, I want to capture what *I* personally noticed most, which may be a certain expression or feel of the moment. That means taking license with the rules. It's nice to hear photography channels acknowledge this. The point of being technically proficient is to have control over your creative decisions so that your good work doesn't occur by accident, and so you don't get stuck in ruts because you simply don't have other ways of photographing a thing. Your channel has been great, thanks.
