- Confused by Camera Jargon? This is one of two or three FREE videos we post each year - there are loads more at www.photographycourses.biz/pho....
Mike Browne explains some of the most common camera jargon used in photography and how things like focal length and f stops all work together for you to make stunning images. - Хобби
Sir you are rendering a great service for teaching photo techniques to millions of millions novic like myself. Many many thanks and best wishes.
Thanks Shashi Moghe I appreciate your comment. Please help me make more vids like this by sharing them with other photographers on forums and social media etc.. Cheers
"I'm just going to pop one off through the window" I have to say I'm loving your videos Mike, you have a great manner, very informative and practical.
thank you for the lovely comment Andy - Melissa pp Mike
Wow, as a novice photographer i browsed through a few videos to understand the basics, but found yours to be perfect as you have explained the concepts in a lucid & simple way, Many thanks for these fantastic videos
Mike Browne and Bryan Peterson can make photography seem so easy less technical and more sensible thank you so much
As ever great mix of easy to understand jargon buster, every camera should come with a DVD of your video tutorials. The books to accompany individual camera's are ok but they can be laborious at times. A hands on visual definition is much better....keep up the great work Mike!!
One of the best teachers I ever met! Thanks Mike for making it easy for amateurs like me!
No worries Alex Allan Happy you like my vids. Please help me make more by sharing them with other photographers on forums, Facebook, Flickr etc.
Mike Browne I sure will do it,Mike.
11 years later, and this is The best explaining I’ve found on RUclips.
Thank you very much Riddles With Answers :-)
Thank you. Wow that's highly specialised and I don't really know where to begin with suggestions - other than buying the widest aperture zoom lenses possible to let in as much light as possible. Sorry. Have you tried looking for forums and groups doing night sky videography? I think they will be better able to help you with this than me.
Wow this was an all out Smorgasbord of info. Great job. I have watch some of your other videos. You were the only one I came across, that said the "V" in TV and AV meant "Value". All others when explaining these settings said they didn't know why canon used TV for Shutter Priority (Time Value), or AV for Aperture priority (Aperture Value). Only you mentioned what that V stood for. THANKS!
I've been searching for a long time on youtube and all over the web trying to find someone who explains basic photography concepts as well as you do. Thank you so much for sharing! I am excited to finally start playing with the mirrorless camera I got over a year ago without feeling like a complete fool! I've also subscribed to your channel, and saved this video for future reference because it has been so informative. I have a couple of friends who are interested in photography as well that I hope to share these explanations with.
Thank you +Sarah Asbury - MIKE
I cannot get enough of your tutorial videos..You explain everything in the simplest terms which are so easy to understand..Thank you so much!!
Thank you Terry. And please share any of my vids you find helpful around - it helps me make more of them... MIKE :-)
Hi Adam. A Macro lens is a specialist lens designed to let you get very very close to whatever you're photographing so it is BIG in the frame. They have the ability to focus very close. A normal 60mm lens can not focus this close. - Mike
Thank you Kirby. It's Jayney (sorry it's me speaking too fast and mumbling) and she's been a top UK TV producer for many years. The camera is a Sony EX1 digital HD video camera - not a DSLR
I have just started a course on camera techniques and a friend gave me details of your videos. This is fantastic so thank you for sharing this as it's been a great help. I'm looking forward to watching your other tutorials. Thanks Mr Browne
thank you +barneyarmy9 alan orawe glad you like 'em please do share it too so we can make more free video- Melissa pp Mike :)
Mike, about bokeh-physics: if you wish, you could think of the aperture size the same way you think about the bokeh-circles' size. The larger/smaller they are, the larger/smaller your aperture needs to be. That's whats exactly happening inside the lens too.. that's the basic of the physics of it. Nothing more complicated, I assure you. :)
I hope I could bring you closer to the technical side a bit. I absolutely love your creative and artistic approach, along with your enthusiasm! Thank you!
@MrEltel63 Hi sorry if we've sparked a row. Only 11 of the 39 videos we've got on YT are paid content. The last thing we want is to upset our members, friends and followers - paid or otherwise. 4 or 5 of the 50 + videos we make each year are released as free samples so people can see what they could get for their money if they choose to join our site. The more members we get the more we can improve and grow the business and service we provide to our members. Hope this helps clear things up. Mike
Watching your videos I realise how much I don`t know, they are a great help, thanks!
Thank you. The crop factor thing doesn't make that much difference especially at 35 / 50mm equivelent. Just get some lenses and choose the focal length that looks right for the shot you're taking. At the end of the day a long lens is long and a short one is short.
Man, thats genius, how you took time to find and film all the everyday life examples to explain those things. Awesome) All video sounds like discovery channel, very simple and to the point, i just found your channel, going to watch all of your stuff. Thanks a lot!
@AjayYOO Hi - I think all cameras have their good and bad points but overall they all take great images these days. Just because I like a particular camera doesn't necessarily mean you will. My advice would be to go to some shops and ask to try as many as you can can - most shops will let you have a play in store or the street outside. Take the images home with you, check them out on your computer and choose the camera which you find easiest to understand that takes the best pics - Have fun...
I love your videos!!!!! You really do make these concepts easy to understand. I must say that your other vids are also pretty great! Thank you for taking time out to share your knowledge... too few photographers are as willing to share!
This video was extremely helpful and the information was concise and put together. Thanks a lot

Very helpful indeed ! thank you Sir Mike Browne, you help me a lot..
Excellent video. Very informative.
Thank you, Mike. You explain white balance so clearly that I neophyte like me can clearly easily understand it.
Great information in one video. Explained very well
Very useful and easy to understand !
Hi- You're right your 18mm lens is much wider than a 35mm lens. If you want to go wider than what you already have I suggest a 10mm lens. - Mike
I have been watching some videos in your channel, and I like em.
I find your videos amazingly helpful and clear. Greetings from Mexico.
Thank you IV Doc. I’m delighted they are helping. Please help me make more videos by sharing them with other photographers on forums, Facebook, ClickASnap, Flickr etc.... MIKE
Thank you. More expensive lenses are made of better quality material and finer ground lens glass. Which abbreviations?
Brilliant video and great explanations. Like the Brian Cox of the camera world. Cheers Mike!

about me & why my comment matters ;-)(really) :-
I have made only couple of comments in youtube videos in my whole life.. and I am using computers for very long time.. and I have seen lot of youtube videos..
I wanted to say that you are awesome.. fantastic.. I should say I have learnt a lot than many other popular photography youtube channels like digitalrev.. You deserve more audiences.. i will tell all my friends who wants to learn photography to see your videos..GREAT!
Mike thanks very much I want to take my photography up a few notches this year and your toots are so incredibly helpful, your great in front as well as behind the camera.
1 thing I find difficult is lens terminology why do some lenses that are the same focal length are a lot more expensive, especially canon lenses, what do all those abbreviations mean? great work Mike, also thanks to Jayney.
I know what white balance is, but never understood that 'light bulb' mode as I'm not having on my point and shoot. I understood now. Thanks !
Wonderful Wonderful Wonderful and very pleasantly and clearly presented. Thanks dude!
Thanks JoachimderZweite Please help me make more like it by sharing it with other photographers on Forums, Facebook etc. Clicking the Thumbs Up button helps too.. - MIKE :-)
Super helpful, thanks
Super helpful! Thank you so much!
Thanks +cameron baldwin happy it helped. Please share it around with other photographers - it'll help me make more like it.. - MIKE :-)
Incredible video as always, makes it a lot easier to understand how to make good use of a camera... I have one question though, when you talk about different focal lenghts you're using an aps-c sensor with a 1.5 crop factor or you're talking about 35mm equivalent?
Thank you and congratulations for your great channel
Great video Mike, thank you.
:-) Darren Guiheen
I'm really enjoying my new camera and your videos are a great help. Just off now to take some shots in Lavenham.
Thank you very much.
Thank you!!
Thanks, that was great!
Great tutorial Thank you !
Thank you Basia Lautman - happy to help :-)
Great video! Any plans for and HD version? ;-)
Thanks, Mike, Just bought a Canon at entry level and slowly learning but need to cut through the BS!
Pleasure *****
Is Jenny (i believe that her name is Jenny, your camera person) using a DSLR rig? I caught that snapshot of her in this video, you guys make great videos together, SO informative.
Pleasure
This is Chapter-1 for beginners to understand (Aperture-Shutter-ISO) A-S-I "The Bermuda" Triangle of the photography and etc. Actually whole of Camera Manual is here in Video format.
Really helpful video. Nice relatable presenting style. Easy to understand analogy's. I'm looking for a filming camera. My RUclips group uses a cannon 6D I think for filming on. But I don't know what all this D stuff means 5D, 6D, 600D. What is it all about?
Hi Mike! This video is superb for a beginer like me. I've had my hands-on Nikon, Canon, Olympus, Pentax but I settled for Fujifilm X Pro1 (though I'd die for Leica).
I want to ask you, what is a Macro lens? Would a normal 60mm and 60mm macro lenses be different? I understand macro-photography but how different are the lenses?
Great Information for a guy who's getting back to photography hobby :-)
i njoy watch your vids
Thank you it's great!
Thanks +thomas dalsøren Please share it wherever appropriate - it'll help me make more like it.... MIKE :-)
awesome thanks
Do you think the Lumix dmc G3 is a good camera for a semi beginner? what make or specific camera would you recommend? i would be very grateful if you got back to me. thanks.
Also, very, very helpful video!
Good video, I have a question though about lenses. I currently have a 18-55mm lens on my Canon DSLR, and want to buy a lens for wider angle shots, for countryside scenery etc. What lens would you recommend? 35mm lenses are listed as 'wide angle' from amazon, but surely my current 18-55mm covers that already, I don't understand!
Very helpful indeed! Thanks!! :-)
Thx a lot
I wish this had been the first video I reviewed when I began improving my photography knowledge and skills.
Thanks R. Todd Gibson
this video was extremely helpful!! i have a few questions, what are the disadvantages of having a NON VR/ NON IS lens? most of the videos i have viewed, the presenter always say having a NON VR lens is not good for video recording, but does it really matter in photography as in wildlife photography? or can it be corrected with proper handling of equipment?
your feedback is appreciated.
Thanx in advance.
Sorry for the delay ***** I haven't heard a non VR lens is less good for video. Our video dedicated Sony EX1 video camera doesn't have VR for example. It is very useful on long lenses and reduces risk of camera shake so for wildlife it is probably a good idea to have VR. Not essential - just something to bear in mind if you're buying...
Very helpful video. I have one question, what sort of dslr would you reccomend for me? I'm starting GCSE photography in september and i'm not sure what would be the best for my price range. My budget is £300. Thanks in advance.
Thanks Gurugula I'm not the best person to ask to recommend cameras etc because i don't know what's out there on the market. I only know the cameras i own. All DSLRs take great pics, it's more important to choose one that you like. If you can get to a store and try a few then do it. Canon and Nikon have the largest range of lenses and accessories if you think you're going to get into it and want to expand your kit. If anyone has any suggestions please comment ....
Are you still using the Nikon D300 or have to upgraded since this video? Great, informative videos, keep up the good work.
Thanks +Robert Spencer Yes I have. I mostly shoot with a Fuji XT-1 when travelling / running workshops and a D600 for commercial shoots - MIKE
Gold!
Sorry we didn't get around to replying at the time you posted... thank you!
this is like the first lesson to photography
Still useful to watch 9 years later. ....... (Alan)
The basics don't change do they Tectorama 🤓
@@MikeBrowne (Alan) ... They certainly don't Mike, but it's sometimes easy to forget if you need to take some photos quickly..... I trust you are well ?
great video. I reposted it on indie sessions dot com!
I'm gonna "pop one off thru the window"! Ha ha classic! Great vid tho!
i did suffer from camera shake but i am cured now...:>) watch the other video on how to get rid of the shakes lol
Thank you. I guess I've never worried why something does what it does so long as I know what it does and how I can use it to get the photos i want. I'm a bit of cave man like that :-/
360p video mike ?? hmmm someone messed up i think.
If I could be a cave man who can take photos like you do, I'd gladly be a cave man, Mike. :)
@photoexposed thanks
I understand this was uploaded 10 years ago, but it sure would have been a lot more helpful if we could see in something more than 360p quality.
Yes indeed 🤓
Hey Mike, it looks like ur focusing and then move camera... why u do that?
