You can use a white balloon and yes you will have to check white balance. It can be a bit awkward but it can be done using a bit of gaffer tape to hold it in place. I've done this with my speed light while on camera. It works. I've seen it done with the camera's pop up flash.
under flash settings on main menu, you can adjust the flash compensation to -1 which I find helps when relying on the pop up flash. it helps to take away some of the intensity of the flash while still lighting the subject
This video is right on time! My two Nikon classic DSLR cameras both have the popu;p flashes, and I basically use them for subjects that are over ten feet away and mininimizes those annoying facial shadows. Appreciate your info! HG
The pop-up flash on the RX100 series can be pointed at the ceiling. It's not a feature described in the manual, but the mechanism allows the flash to be pointed upwards.
You nailed it so well. Showed the true problems with each option. Not out just to promote, but honest about it. I do use it for trigger as you mentioned, and didn't know about the TTL problem. Thanks for letting me know.
I use cloth that my wife has made to just drop down over the flash and it works very nice she has also made it with an off white which as you said will give a little color to the photo which is not bad either. I enjoy watching you videos David you da man.
Thanks for this video, I always learn new tips or tricks from videos like this. I do like the ability to have a pop up flash especially for providing just a little fill light for close backlit subjects. It sure comes in handy when I wasn't planning to use flash but needed that little bit extra light at that moment. For Nikon shooters out there, there is a SB400 flash that is super small( 2 AA cells ) but works great. Thanks David and Adorama...Ted in Sebastian, Fl. ( home of the $9 haircut ). Ha.....
You can also use your phone instead of a piece of paper to redirect the light. I've never really used the pop-up flash on my camera but if I had known about these tricks, I would have lol.
You need a better and more realistic mannequin with glass eyes. The Yaheetec mannequins from Amazon are much more natural and real looking, with glass eyes for better catchlights, at about $85. The hair for mine came from the Halloween section of Walmart and the clothes from the local thrift shops, and the total was still less than $100. I can get my studio lighting very close to perfect before my client arrives.
Dont know why more dont copy the solution of the sony A6000 series. It can be made to bounce without accesories. For macro and close ups a disposable plastic dish fitted over the front of your lens works miracles
Canon pop-up flashes only are only built-in into APSC cameras. No Canon FF cameras have pop-up flashes. For APSC cameras, a 50mm has FOV of about 80mm. so you will be shooting by standing further away from the subject. Who needs to bounce a weak light when you are shooting the portrait from further away when the light would be weaker. And in the menu of Canon APSC Camera you can enable "red-eye reduction" and control the intensity of the flash (using flash compensation) automatically when shooting closer subjects. For Macro, I use a E-TTL Ring flash which is actually two flashes. Intensity and A:B ratio can be chosen and the ring rotated so that it can be top vs down and not just left vs, right or any angle.
You can use a small mirror to bounce all the light to the ceiling and increase your iso to compensate.

I've had mine for years and never knew this! Just tried it out inside and it makes a huge improvement in the photo. Thanks!

How weird ! Small world!
I’m in Sebastian also !
what would happen, if we raised the iso ? have you tried it?
I often used pop up flash outside under direct sun light to fill some shadows.
First Adorama this is 🔥🔥🔥
We Love You Adorama!💙💙💙

David, very thorough and many good ideas. What I really enjoyed: @9:30 "... and that light is never coming back! " 🤣 Thank you for a fun video!
Satin scotch tape works well.
I have used the pop-up flash to trigger an external flash. I find a trigger is much more reliable.

I use sony's 24 70 lens, can I capture water drops? Hope you reply
Why not submit this question at www.AskDavidBergman.com ?
My H6D100c has a pop up flash - as does my H5D and you would think it would be useless - and you would be right as it is

I know that toilet paper has been used in an emergency.
I have used tissue as well.
Probably Canon can't bounce the pop-up flash, but other cameras can!

Use the cheap clear plastic lens back Nikon puts on their lenses now.
9:30 "None of this is gonna help outdoors...."...Say that at the beginning ffs lol
Nothing useful according to me 😢
When someone hacks you they use this 🤷♂️
NEVER USE POP UP FLASH
