I work in a camera store that devlops film, just go to your local film lab and ask if you can have a used disposable camera or two, we simply throw out away 100's of used ones a week. I wouldnt hesitate to give a used one away for free if someone asked!
PS I have made one of these from the little lens before when i was bored by cutting out the lid of a coffee cup
Hi I can make this also for a Canon apsc dslr? Or you think the mirror will hit the back of the lens?
@@PaoloAnzio aslong vas the lens is quite flush with the lens cap it shouldnt hit the mirror especially on an apsc you shouldnt have a problem
@@viper3269 i wanna try and fit this thing on my cellphone too, i dunno if it's even possible, but, i was thinking of buying one of those super cheezy maco clip on lenses and just swap this kodak lens into it somehow and clip it over my cell phone and see what it does, someone on youtube should try it, i havnt found any videos of it yet though
@@seanc8054 Works great as a macro on a phone! can hold it on with just a bit of blutack
Damn. The images from the lens actually brings me back to my childhood memories. Such a creative way to experiment with different looks for a really affordable price. The images from the baloons are super vibrant!
Was not expecting the images to come out like that. This is such a good idea
Yeah, I'm with you. This is brilliant.
Those soft edges are just insane!
This lens has no business being so good.
I think this is my favorite of your videos you've ever made. It is really impressive what a couple of well-engineered plastic aspheres can do, especially near the diffraction-limited aperture.
Trying the extension tubes was especially clever and an added facet to an already wonderful film.
Thank you for making this! Photons don't care how much the optics cost, they only care where they are going next :).
I remember working in 1-Hour-Photo and popping these cameras open many times every day.
We always would keep the AA batteries because Kodak & Fuji only liked to use fresh batteries when they would come collect/re-use the empty camera cases.
Fun memories :)
This is so cool! The combination of this lens on a modern mirrorless camera creates something new altogether. And I am intrigued by the process of shooting with this lens, without even needing to think much about focus at all and composing an image knowing almost everything is in focus.
After watching the smarter everyday tour of their film labs and production, I would imagine Kodak also spent a ton of time and effort to get that plastic lens just right: Cheap and fast/easy to produce, while having at least "not terrible" quality... But most importantly, THE SAME "not terrible" quality across millions of units sold for decades.
The Look of this lens is amazing! Never in a thousand years would i have the idea to use it on a modern camera! Great Vid as always Mat :)
Thanks for watching!
Amazing vintage look on a digital camera. I will definitely try this. All I need is to canabilize a used disposable camera. Thanks for sharing.
You can do it!
The results are fantastic. Great work, as always🖤
Thank you!
What gets me is the video clips. They look kind of like movies from the 60s and 70s. This is very interesting and I kind of want to try it.
the end results are exactly what it feels like seeing old pictures and footage but enhancing the blur with details from memories
1:16 be very careful. For the flash, there is a >300V capacitor in there that could killl you when touched.
ONLY PROCEED WITH GOOD INSULATING GLOVES AND DO NOT TOUCH THE CIRCUITRY
When the cam makes the whine noise while loading the flash, the 300V capacitor gets charged. It has enough capacity to dump enough energy into your heart to make it beat asynchronously. If you happen to touch it and get an electric shock, immediately seek a doctor
I've been.. Shocked a few times by accidentally holding my fat fingers on the wires, being too curious... -10/10 can't recommend
Which part of the camera is the capacitor? Is it where the battery was popped out or somewhere else?
This is what I need. Beautifully soft images with some nice characteristics.
Wow you made my want for a mirrorless camera grow even more
The outcome is amazing
This is such a brilliant idea. Thanks so much for your video's man, they're amazing!
Glad you like them! my friend !
Another awesome and inspiring video!
Very creative and surprising. I am shocked how great the results are. Even for video recording.
Your creativity is always inspiring and appreciated!
Thank you very much!
Cool project, loved the outcome! Seems pretty lucky to have the rear element lined up to a perfect distance from the sensor. 🙂
yup, tried to recreate and focus is off, if you move the lense it focuses, just need to modify the mount to the right distance now...
This lens is great for vintage car photography. It really brings out the vintageness of the cars.
It's a fluke that the lens distance from the sensor is focused, right? Even with a high f/# the hyperfocal distance to the sensor is quite narrow.
I’m also wondering about this
Not a fluke if it works
@@greysuit17 something unlikely to work, working is exactly what a fluke is.
@@dirtdirtdirtiest9607 or it’s working exactly as it should so it’s not a fluke, it’s just working like normal.
isnt part of the appeal of p&s is that its not about nailing focus every single time. i mean they only cost like $20, ive had some where the whole roll was a little out of focus every subject i ran across.
I’ve been in love with the vintage look since last year and now seeing this video. Man I love your videos and your channel, this was so mesmerizing and I was smiling so big of how this looks. I make short films and my goal is to capture a characteristic film emulation and now seeing this is going to be like cherry on top. Thank you so much!
Glad you like them!
Honestly though; if you want a perfect film look; get some on a lovely slr, like a nikon f-series from the 80's, or an old fashioned praktica; as the m42 mount has so much beautiful glass❤️
and load in some lovely Lomography colour film, like the 400, which has this classic warm kodak film look from the 90's which is why I love it so much, (even though nikon glass is crazily expensive tho.. >.>)
A cheaper way to do this might be to buy canon ef mount lenses from the 80s and 90s. They're the same mounting system as modern Canon cameras, but significantly older and therefore just a little bit different looking
What a fun project! I'm putting it on my to do list!
The very soft edges remind me a bit of an anamorphic lenses. All in all I quite like it !
really glad to see someone showcasing the video capabilities with a lens like this, thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
You keep me inspired. One day I’ll be able to afford similar equipment and do fun experiments like this. Thank you Mathieu, you are much appreciated. Love from Sydney
all you need is 25$ and a mirrorless camera, but it can be a very entry level one too
@@MathieuStern Exactly, I have a €23 Lumix GX1
Absolutely love all the examples!! Beautiful! I shot a couple portraits with mine - also a stellar look. I thus think all body caps should be little pancake lenses haha
Dude! This is so inspiring! Always wanted to do this, didn't realize how easy it was!
this has opened up so many possibilities. since technically maybe you could fit more lenses in there (?) to make some kind of stereoscopic camera
Wow! Finally something I can try to do myself! :) I'm a huge 90's look fan.
I love your videos so much, please keep dong those amazing lens experiments!
I just got blown away by the images out of it!
Dude the videos u show literally look like moving disposable pictures it’s so beautiful omg
Absolutely brilliant.
Impressionnant ! Et excellent de voir à l'intérieur de ces appareils photo iconiques 👍
These give such an exquisite look.
Love this idea! I do tons of macro beauty work and really want to try this and see how it works/looks
Wow thanks! What an amazing look these plastic lense had; I am very surprised!
These cameras are actually reusable, I regularly put new film in mine.
Love this! Definitely gonna try it
Please do!
As a kid, before I got my own 35mm Olympus pocket camera, I used to take pictures with a Fuji QuickSnap that my father reloaded for me several times. If I somehow find it someday, I wonder if I should adapt the lens for my Nikon Zfc. Blasts from the past.
Creates a unique look!
Oh wow! This is formidable! I have access to tonnes of disposable cameras from my job at a photolab! Except now I really need a mirrorless Camera!
Glad it was helpful!
I have a similar thing, it's made out of a 110 format broken film camera lens that I adapted to work with my pentax DSLR using a cracked double concave lens. I assembled the whole thing in m42 macro adapters as the body and it actually works. My wonky optics knowledge multiplied by the concave lens (out of a light condensor probably) that is dead by any photographer's standards give the picture something resembling quality in the middle while the edges get increasingly blurry. Also chromatic aberration. A lot of it. In other words, if you want digital lomography or "drunk/drugged vision lens" this kind of technique is the way to go
Was actually just trolling through to see if anyone has ever done this for a Pentax and if the spacing is right or not. I may have to try for my K-70
hey, I'm tempted to try this out. i'm guessing the biconcave lens should be placed before the point of convergence of the disposable lens? could you tell me the size of the biconcave lens you used, is it about the same size as the dispo lens or bigger??
you are the only person o could find who tried to adapt this idea to a dslr
Wonderful video, thank you!
Omg it’s you !?
Merci pour cette expérience Mathieu. Superbe découverte!
Sold. Im doing this for sure.
That's super awesome, I'm definitely gonna try this some time!
sympa le feeling "vintage" au sens 90's/ nice 90 vintage feel
Disposable camera lens Maestro! Bravo!!
Love the look!!
This is so cool! I can't wait to make my own. Great video!
Could you make a video on how you color graded these?? They look incredible!
Just amazing!!
Such nostalgia for such a simple concept. Now I’ve got to make one
I love the edge distortion!
You are a delightful chap with your videos and ideas! Formidable!
Glad you think so!
Surprisingly sharp!
I tried this and it works great. Keep in mind you have to use a mirrorless camera. It's also a bit tedious get the lens at the right distance from the camera. Still very fun to play around with and the results come out great in my opinion😊
If you don't mind, may i ask why it wouldn't work with a dslr?
@@connoisseurdumbass1863 I am going to give it a go on my old 'beater' DSLR, (a Nikon D50). Provided that the lens/cap doesn't get in the way of the mirror, I cant see the harm in trying it. I suspect that it will be too far from the sensor to work as a "6ft-Infinity" lens per the video but, bearing in mind that it was quite spaced out with Macro tubes to get it to work as Macro, it could well work as a "0-3ft" macro lens.
I'll let you know how I get on once the cheapo body cap is have ordered arrives. I got the lens for £3 donation to charity via our local film processor.
@@connoisseurdumbass1863 well, bodycaps arrived today. Quick mark up and drill with a step drill out to nearly 16mm: fitted the lens with the front bezel outside the cap and the rear part behind the cap.
Looks good, and takes great macro photos at a distance of about 4 inches, with a depth of field of about 0.75"! Make for some interesting challenging shots.
Useful? Not really, but cool for the £4 and 10mins it took to make.
Any update?@@iamaparanoidandroid1
@@iamaparanoidandroid1 Did you try it? I am considering doing the same on my dslr camera :)
Totally doing this!
Je suis photographe et j'aime énnormément ta chaine !
c'est vraiment incroyablement inspirant de voir tous les hack qu'on peut utiliser sur un appareil photo numérique !
Pretty amazing results, good one to get for cheap
This is legendary
wth, that looks way better than I expected!
This lens are great. This idea is great
awesome idea, will be trying this out at some point
Not only the content is great, the music is awesome
That’s awesome! Love it
Merci pour le tip, l'explication et les photos ! je l'ai vu sur Instagram et c'est incroyable. Vraiment
Man I am going to make this for my EF-m and EF mount, thats areally cool look.
Those images you took look so good! And definitely have that 90s vibe. My wife is always using her fujifilm instax mini 11 camera.
I wonder if i repurposed this lens, if she would like taking photos with my a7.
Truly fascinating!
Wow, i like the sofr, slight aberration, movie-like looks
I’m going to have to try that at some point, brilliant video
I will try these, what a genius idea
Have fun!
This is fantastic!
This is seriously cool!!! Thank you for sharing!!!
This is really creative and reminds me of the lens baby approach, or those lens in a cap things. I'm wondering what it'd be like to put it on a little flexible air conditioning pipe (diy bellows) to make a cheap tilt-shift.
Love it!
You've outdone yourself.
Just a tips. Before opening the camera, take a picture so the flash go off and remove the battery so fast that it can not recharge, even the chance is small, if you manage i touch the camera so it go off it can be rather painful, I do not think it is deadly, but it do load up a rather good charge.
Hello Matthieu! I didn't know you could make a lens from a disposable camera. Great work! Stay safe, and I hope you are well.
I mean, you're not really _making_ a lens, really just _taking_ a lens and creating an adapter.
Surprising results
I am so going to do this!
Awesome!
This is superb!!
A great idea. I have an old 126 instamatic like camera with a square aperture, I want to extract and adapt on my Sony one day. When I start this project, I will keep this video in mind. 😄👍
That's a great idea. My parents used a 126 instamatic for years. I regularly use a Schneider Retina lens lens from a Kodak 126 SLR on mirrorless.
Nostalgia overload.
I'd say a lens cap meant to hold these could be easily 3D printed.
I NEED to de this, thank you so much, the results are amazing
Okay I just found my next little project. THIS IS GENIUS
Amazing!
That's super cool
Loved this video.
Great and creative idea! Thanks!
Great video, thank you!
Dang. I like it. I wanna tear up a point and shoot now. Could potentially do it with any focus free film camera. Possibly with autofocus lenses
After seeing this video last week I had to give it ago, I bought a slightly cheaper Ilford xp2 disposable, I don't think it's any less sharp on my A7iii than this Kodak version. Just used bit of double sided 3M tape to help keep lens in place and pop some super glue on around the lens to help keep our dust from any gaps around the lens in the body cap. Good little hack.
You got to see matins Porsche! Says martini on the side. That guys a LEGEND! And a great friend.
I love your videos man. Keep up the good work!
