  • Red Rising is my favorite sci-fi series of all time. It is one of the most beautifully written space epics out there pulling from all the greats like Star Wars, Dune, and Game of Thrones. In this video I'm going to be breaking down the basics of the Red Rising universe in the hopes to make a crash course video for those of you looking to check out this fantastic series.

This is a great summary! I had the good fortune of my best friend recommending the series two years ago. Went in with literally no idea what it was about, finished 1-3 in a few weeks, and it’s one of my favorite series.

I'm kinda stumped as to why this isn't getting more traffic. Great video about a GREAT story. I'm a Trekker through and through and have read so many of the novels. I'm also into Star Wars and I've read most of what is now considered Legacy material. Still I turn to the Red Rising series when I wanna escape for a while. Hehe, I haven't actually read the books. I've listened on Audible dozens of times though and I couldn't agree more with the chef's kiss when it comes to narrator Tim Gerard Renold's performance.

I wish people talked more about this series.
I'll be buying Lightbringer soon and I'm around a quarter of the way through Dark Age. Absolutely beautiful series.
Edit: if it ever gets turned into a TV show lets all just beg and pray to the Veil that Pierce Brown doesn't let anyone take more control than himself.

I feel like if you are a fan of Brandon Sanderson, this would be up your alley. However, unlike Sanderson, this has the feel of a YA novel. I will probably give it a shot but i doubt this is a Game of Thrones level book.

It's Grimdark like 40k but far more realistic imo. "The Society" is a solid path which humanity can go down, and it doesn't seem that far-fetched.

the first book is probably the weakest. a bit cliche to say ‘oh it gets better by chapter 27467281’. the first book is a taste of the world and the second book onwards completely opens it up. i’d atleast give the first book a go as the series only gets better and better

Don't push it. There are too many books and too little time. I can usually tell in one page whether I want to trust a particular author or not. There's a craft to writing, and I'm familiar with it. A good writer should be able to grab you with just the opening line, or at most a paragraph. One page is enough to judge the author's level of proficiency and prose style. I'm giving this guy two chapters only because he has a complicated world to introduce and I'm feeling generous. If he can't grab me in two chapters, I don't care how cool a premise he's come up with, I'm not gonna enjoy his amateur ass.

@@austenhead5303 Seems pretty unreasonable considering there is this thing in reality called evolution. You know, gaining experience and refining the technique, moving upward with each milestone. To say his first book is his peak is frankly silly considering you have not even touched the second book, let alone the fifth one lmao. Have fun missing greatness with that silly ass perspective you got there, oh mighty book man who can see an entire books, an entire franchises worth by reading two chapters.

    • @austenhead5303

@@flippynapkins7708 We'll have to disagree on what's unreasonable. I read fiction for my own pleasure, not to selflessly support random writers while they take their sweet time to "evolve". My time is limited. I'm not gonna waste it on something that doesn't give me what I want. Also, no offense, but plenty of terrible series have devoted fans who think their thing is "greatness". I'll judge for myself, thanks. Otherwise, according to your philosophy, I'd have to read Twilight to the end as well.
I'm on chapter seven and I'm still reading. I don't particularly like his writing style, I'm not getting attached to the character(s) and the worldbuilding is only moderately interesting so far, but there are no red flags either, no glaring signs of a writer out of his depth. It isn't bad or amateurish even though I dislike some of his choices , so now I'm gonna give him the chance to get to something good. That shouldn't take too much longer if the pacing remains consistent. There's still a chance I might like this. I should know two thirds through the first book whether he knows how to structure and plot. So far so good on that aspect, but then it is a very typical hero's journey type opening. Hard to mess that up. We'll see.

Eh. Knowing what it is isn't a problem. Describing concepts like that is what hooks people in and makes them wait for it. How I got into RR was by being "spoiled" about the cast society and Darrow rising up. It got me through a very slow start in the first book and made me a minority of people that really loved the first.
