  • Kathleen Kennedy, Lucasfilm and Star Wars have landed themselves in an interesting spot with the announcement of a new Star Wars film that will feature Rey...because the last three movies apparently didn't do enough of that.
Join me as we discuss the film, its director and why the movie will ultimately flop.

Here's the quote: “Now that she’s running Lucasfilm and making movies, it seems to me that Kathy Kennedy and J.J. Abrams don’t have a clue about Star Wars," Lucas said. "They don’t get it. And J.J. Abrams is writing these stories - when I saw that movie where they kill Han Solo, I was furious. I was furious when they killed Han Solo. Absolutely, positively there was no rhyme or reason to it. I thought, 'You don’t get the Jedi story. You don’t get the magic of Star Wars. You’re getting rid of Han Solo?' ”They have Luke disintegrate. They killed Han Solo. They killed Luke Skywalker. And they don’t have Princess Leia anymore. And they’re spitting out movies every year. And they think it’s important to appeal to a woman’s audience, so now their main character is this female, who’s supposed to have Jedi powers, but we don’t know how she got Jedi powers, or who she is. It sucks. The storylines are terrible. Just terrible. Awful. You can quote me - ‘J.J. Abrams, Kathy Kennedy - talk to me.'”

@@elfascisto6549 Well-written characters come across as real people, whom you identify with and care about. You're drawn into their story. Plot devices exist purely to progress the plot by getting the story from A to B.
The most obvious example of a plot device from the sequel trilogy is perhaps Maz Kanata. We learn almost nothing about her, she has no character progression and she is in the story purely to give Rey Anakin's lightsaber and some sage advice.
The lack of characterization in the sequels becomes apparent when you compare the main characters with those from the original trilogy. Luke, Han and Leia had distinct personalities and character arcs. Their friendship develops over the trilogy.
Rey, Finn and Poe are cardboard cutouts by comparison, with only Rey having any character progression. Their relationship exists purely to advance the story, which is why their friendship isn't convincing.

The narcissistic amnesia isn't just a Star Warts thing, it's become predominant throughout Hollywood... ax exemplified by one of the executives claiming that the reason that one of the latest girl-boss bombs failed was that men don't identify with female heroes, completely forgetting characters like Ellen Ripley, Eowyn, Sarah Conner, b-movie heroes like Red Sonja.
Even in gaming there have been a spate of excellent female heroes like Rynn and Lara Croft that were always very popular.
When comparing many of the modern remakes to their usually vastly superior originals, what the remake usually lacks is character development. Even when they don't gender or race swap the protagonist, they usually forget that what made that hero great the first time around was overcoming great odds, not being powerful. The best heroes are never as powerful as the villains they face.

Also, if they do have a loved male character in the same movie to do any fighting they must make sure that their power level never outshines a woman's.

Leigh Brackett co-wrote Return of the Jedi- the culmination of the entire saga. I would call that “helping shape the story in a galaxy far, far away.”
And NOBODY would (or ever has) denied the importance of Marcia Lucas’ innovative editing to the success of the original movie. She won an Oscar for it. Her contribution cannot be understated, and she definitely “helped shape the story.”

I don't find Rey interesting, and part of this is because I don't belief the writers love this character, and it shows. She is simply a political statement to them. Conversely I would offer Hobbits who "Tolkien loved as they represent the small slice of life he enjoyed, even in a world threatened by war". From humble beginnings and skills at the start, at the end we get "Aragorn : [to Frodo, Sam, Pippin, and Merry] My friends. You bow to no one."

There is one way I would accept a Rey movie, and that’s if it included Finn and made good on the premise of ‘The Force Awakens’. Finn is clearly supposed to be Force sensitive and the premise was that Rey and Finn would take the journey as Force Sensitive people together…
Sadly it looks like JJ met with resistance and kicked that can down the road to where RJ took every Chekov gun JJ primed and dumped them into the ocean, where on… somehow JJ returned… and kept kowtowing to ‘Don’t give Finn the force spotlight’ that JJ nonetheless alluded to without stating Finn has the force.
That was what the trilogy should have been about. Two people coming together, with Rey going Dark and Finn being the weaker of the two being prepared to die to save her so they could oust the dark side.
I say I would be interested… but at this point it’s an academic interest. Disney SW under Iger and KK have to go and the franchise put on restoratives before I’ll watch anything SW made under Disney again.

That’s interesting point that the writers or possibly executives of the sequel trilogy don’t actually seem to care about the female characters they’re writing and were just used as some sort of political tool or narrative device to keep the story going.
Like if they really want us to care for these characters, then they’re not giving them anything meaningful to do and are making them into generic caricatures.
Instead of giving challenges for them overcome, they seem to promote superficial stoic qualities because apparently, anything else is a form of weakness in Lucasfilm’s skewed eyes.

      REY MOVIE DISASTER. SERIOUSLY,,,

    • @kecukraftwork1988
      @kecukraftwork1988 7 месяцев назад +4

Rey going to the Dark Side was the *only* natural progression for that character to work, and that got chewed up so hard! The story basically wrote itself!
Rey is extremely Force sensitive, without a known past, and with no sense of belonging. She's faced hardship her entire life. When she's exposed to her Force potential after resisting Kylo's mind probe, she begins to get a taste for the first time of true power.
Finn is a First Order trooper, who can't come to terms with who he is, and is lost in the crimes he's committed under orders. After escaping, he, too, finds that he's Force sensitive and has a natural affinity towards using a lightsaber.
Kylo is a powerful Force user, but is conflicted in who he is and who he wants to be. The pull of the light is strong, despite years of Dark Side training.
How much easier can it get? Initially, everyone thinks Rey is going to be the hero. She seems to be taking the hero's journey until she's captured. However, Snoke senses Kylo's inner turmoil and compares it to Rey's growing arrogance and power potential. He imprisons Rey and goads her to hate the unfairness of her mistreatment - in her having been abandoned to survive for herself - and in pushing the narrative that she's a cut-throat survivor, gradually lures her to the Dark Side. Snoke then betrays his former apprentice, rendering Kylo left for dead.
In Rey's absence, Finn goes to complete her task and seek out Luke. However, Kylo survives, and is now convinced of what he has to do. Believing his uncle is the only person left capable of defeating Snoke, he seeks him out. To do so, he goes to the only people in the galaxy who won't take advantage of his weakened state: his parents (and Chewie). They forgive Kylo, as he retakes his name Ben, and as a family they go to find Luke. That's where Ben reunites with Finn. They talk about their past actions and traumas. In such mental healing, it helps them to forgive each other and themselves, and grow closer to the Light Side. Luke was busy seeking spiritual guidance in restarting a new Jedi Order; and seeing the Force providing him with the opportunity, forgives Ben for his acts of attacking the former temple and trains Finn, before (respectfully) dying in the process in the presence of Han & Leia. However, the Millennium Falcon was tracked by the First Order, and the island is attacked. To cover Ben & Finn as they escape, Han, Chewie and Leia take the Falcon into a dogfight, but ultimately go down. It's then up to Finn and Ben to carry the Jedi torch, and to end the growing Dark Side that Rey and Snoke have threatened to revive.
It's no masterpiece, but it's a solid enough outline. The plot isn't hindered by whether Rey is a Palatine or not; isn't damaged by coward Luke or zombie Sidious; removes the painful teenage love story; introduces new characters without dumping on the old; is respectful to Ford's desire to no longer play Han, and to Carrie's death; maintains Anakin's place as the "chosen one" for killing Sidious; and took about half an hour to iron out for a YT comment 🤷🏻

Yes, the 'Rey Palpatine' movie will fail and potentially flop as hard as The Marvels. Let's put it out there: Is the character Rey a "Mary Sue"? ABSOLUTELY. That fault lies at the feet of the writers and higher ups with LucasFilm and Disney. In my opinion, Rey should've had more to grit to her...more mistrust in people due to her being a scavenger. Unfortunately, the movie audience got a character (barely) who can do anything, who doesn't struggle, free from consequences for her actions etc. Disney Star Wars had three bites of the apple to get Rey right...sadly they didn't.
I really can't see Ms. Obaid-Chinoy pulling this film off. Look, she's a two-time Oscar winning director and is passionate about her activism and that's fine. However, when it comes to things that aren't documentaries...aside from directing two episodes of Ms. Marvel, it's light. Now add the statement she made about women in Star Wars onto it: Houston, we've got a problem. To me, Chinoy and her statement reminds me of Rian Johnson and his "subvert expectations" nonsense. To put it bluntly we're getting a socio-political message instead of a God-damn story...AGAIN.
Quick side note: Nerdword, I agree with your opinion on Finn/John Boyega. To see the potential of the character and actor just completely wasted still angers me to this very day. I would say one can add Rose Tico/Kelly Marie Tran to that as well. Could you do a video about this subject? Call it the "wasting of characters" or "character mismanagement" or something.
I think it's safe to say that The Sequels, through ineptitude and other factors, have become the gold standard of cautionary tales. 🙂

Disney have proven themselves to be morally and creatively bankrupt in recent years with a number of woke driven retellings of some of their older films failing at the Box Office and igniting anger in the Fandom.
That is what happened to the Sequel Trilogy too. They had an opportunity to expand on George Lucas' story in the aftermath of the Empire and the rebuilding of the Republic and the Jedi Order, but instead they ended up turning the Sequel Trilogy into a retelling of the Original Trilogy, a massive error of judgement that upset the Fandom as the OT is revered.
Because of the mess they made, news that they want to further expand on their idiotic version of the OT went down like a cup of cold sick, coupled with the news an activist with no experience in blockbuster filmmaking was hired seemingly not to make a good film, but rather to further diminish the alleged Patriarchy in the Fandom.

The ability to direct a movie has little, if anything, to do with what you have between your legs. It actually comes from the empathy towards the story, the people that you work with and above all the audience that you seek to entertain. Now that actually supports your statement that the year does not make any difference either. Rey is little more than a self insert character put there to bolster someone's ego, hence the lack of character depth and relatability and a bad director, or at least an incompetent one with a prior AGENDA, will only make that worse. The only thing we do not know as yet is the actual story that is to be used - we have only had speculation so far - and when we find that out, we shall then know to what degree this movie will fail.

I could approve of handing the reins over to independent or documentary filmmakers - if they were making new properties. A lot of disney films lack resonance. But I'm not sure there's any reason to think her creative vision would align with the franchise. Unless she can avoid conforming to her own tastes, she's taking something built by George and - out of ego - altering it, with very limited bona fides. I don't see why it needs to be made unless it's meant to set up the next round of diverse star wars standard bearers. Unless they think there's an appetite for Rey, the logical move is set up spin offs.

Star Wars is a big world. They would have an infinitely better chance at success telling a different story than Rey. That ship has sailed. As for Sharmeen… if they posted the director job on an online job site, they could get 100 more qualified director choices for a Star Wars film.

Sorry this is 6 mos late, but as an OT fan from the age of 7, I enjoyed the intent, if not the execution of, the prequels, GL wanting to tell Vader's story. That is, the story of the previous generation. So when it came to the sequels, I was ready. Then with each movie, my enthusiasm turned to anger, and finally sadness. Since the movies, the D+ shows have turned that sadness to apathy. I enjoyed Mando, even s3 though to a lesser extent, and I likewise enjoyed Asokha (as a fan of her development in all seasons of CW). That story went in a weird direction, but okay, lets see where it goes (although, for the love of god, not everyone has to have goddamned jedi powers…). Especially intrigued by the "dark jedi" and their story, sadly the passing of RP makes that challenging.
As you covered here, Rey is an uninteresting character. Would love to have seen the next generation (the point of SW trilogies here are generational), but what we got was a prodigy beyond the likes of Anakin/Vader, and by extension his bloodline in Luke and Leia. If GL continued, he probably would have focused on the same bloodline. But its Disney's now, so sure they want to go elsewhere, fine. Unfortunately they went into this with no plan. How the fuck do you try amd follow up one of the most valuable IPs and not have a plan other than "female lead". Like, that's the first five minutes of the storybuilding, then you move on to flesh out the character. Disney appear to have taken lunch after those first five minutes and not come back to the table and just started writing. So, give me an interesting female protagonist and I'm there. These writers filled out the demographic check boxes amd never looked back.

Hello NerdWord. I really like your analysis & appreciate a female perspective since most of the film analysis content seems to come from the male perspective. I'm a guy so my worldview is from the male perspective too. I'm wondering how you feel about all the 'female empowerment' narrative you talk about mostly coming from male writers? Is this what men think women want? I'm genuinely interested as it's clear something is out of alignment, and to fix the problem, you must first understand the problem. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Keep up the good work!
All this stuff just comes across as vindictive rather than inspirational, or even cautionary. Like a therapy session for angry immature people to lash out because life isn't fair.

I'm definitely not NerdWord... but I think I can help answer your question anyway.
      1) "Is this what men think women want? " - male writers wrote movies (etc) that women love... for decades.
      2) "... mostly coming from male writers?" - a bit more complicated...
IS it coming from male writers? Or is it coming from "male" writers?
Either way... is it being forced on them by female bosses... like KK and Salke to name 2... with a certain social agenda? (the same one you put in quotes in your own post)
IMO, that also explains the reason that it comes across as being vindictive...
      because it is.

@@Nyet-Zdyes Thanks for that. All great insight. The result is clearly films & TV shows that just feel angry. I engage with films/TV to be entertained, not be on the receiving end of a rant about some grievance I personally had nothing to do with. As far as I'm concerned such people should direct their anger where it belongs.

"It's about time we had a woman come forward to shape the story in a galaxy far far away".
If she is talking about herself; that is ignorance, hubris, and a lack of knowledge of previous women directors/show runners.
If she is talking about characters in the movie, then wasn't Rey the main character in the sequel trilogy?
If her point is that one extra data point of women directing or starring in movies is added, then sure. This does that. Would it encourage young girls to start wanting to act and direct in film? Sure, but also they would be more likely if you made a good product with a female character can relate too.

Well, this Frankenstein's Monster of a character isn't going away any time soon. Best we can hope for is seeing her reduced to a side character in a Disney+ cartoon about her Jedi students. God, I miss the original Expanded Universe.

There's simply no foundation on which to build anything even remotely interesting: the sequel trilogy burned out a large portion of the fanbase, both the older ones and those who grew up with the sequels.
Rey is a character created for marketing... and in fact, after the release of the film the merchandising (especially on her) remained unsold... unlike what could be observed with the release of The Phantom Menace or Revenge of the Sith.
Furthermore, on my personal point, I have always found that hairstyle they gave her, with those three knots on the back of her neck, very anti-aesthetic, a literal eyesore.

I didn't know my better half when we were children but we both queued outside our local Odeon (seperately - me with my mates, and her with her older sister) to watch the Original Star Wars movie back in the late 70's. She has been a sci-fi and fantasy fan ever since (she was always a bit of a tomboy... heaven forbid, these days). So... if after 20 minutes of watching Dr Strange MoM she says I've watched enough of this... I'm off, you know she's not impressed. She hated Captain Marvel (the first movie) and will re-watch the original SW trilogy, but has absolutely no interest in watching the Rey movies (once Han was murdered she was done).
I was alright with the Rey movies upto the point where Han was killed, as well, and niether of us has any interest in any future Rey movies.
The second season of The Mandalorian was so bad that it put us off watching any of the other tv series... so we haven't. RIP Star Wars!

And the reason she shouldn't be allowed within ten miles of it.

What people don't understand (or don't WANT to understand), is that this has nothing to do with money. The current Culture War is IDEOLOGICAL (dare I say, 'Religious'?). The current buzzword, 'Woke', is a vague, undefined term that is used by people who try to use it honestly, as a stand-in for the Cultural Marxism that it actually does represent.
Modern Feminism/Postmodernism/Relativism, all these are ultimately related to, and derived FROM, Cultural Marxism. It is a belief that everything in our world is merely a Social Construct. It posits that Objective Truth does not exist (Except of course, that SOLE Objective Truth...) so everything can be set by Personal Feelings and those who have the power to enforce their personal feelings on the rest of the world.

I do hope they make this movie, as expensive as possible, and watch how miserably it’ll do in the box office.
Both male and female fans do not like Rey as a character. The only people who would go to watch the new Rey film, are absolutely not real Star War fans, and will mostly be liberal women who will watch this film just to “stick it to the guys”.
These type of people are not worth anyone’s time, because they are ideologues.

George lucas did not care about what fans thought of the prequels.
He did TCW movie it flopped at the box office
the first 4 seasons of clone wars were seen has a kids show. the raitings on cartoonnetwork were really bad.
    but guess what
the kids who grew up with love clone wars era now.
