This is my wife's favorite song. She played it over and over for our son as he grew up and told him to pay attention. About 4 years ago while was deployed overseas her phone rang late one night and she answered with the standard hello. I looked over at her curious as to why she hadn't said anything more and saw that her eyes were starting to tear up. She noticed me looking and put her phone on speaker and this song was playing. Our son then said "I did listen mom. I don't have much time but I'm ok and love you. Then he had to hang up.

@@annawilliams2336 Yeah this dude is clueless. Van Zant was not anti-firearm. He has to be taking Saturday Night Special and misinterpreting it. JVZ was a gun owner. He did say in the song that a .38 special served no purpose other than killing someone. It wasn't an anti-firearm statement itself, only a commentary on the high usage of .38 specials in murder at the time and you weren't exactly hunting with them. Not animals anyway. They weren't necessarily anti-drug, either. That Smell was a warning of abusing hard drugs the way he began to. That didn't make them teetotalers. I don't think this guy has any comprehension skills at all.

The very first song I ever learned to sing was 'Gimme Three Steps' because I loved it so much, and the commentary within it on things happening. I had *no clue* what was going on, but it was funny and entertained my parents that I knew it. This one, though, this one always makes me cry. I think there's wisdom for all children to hear in it, and I also wish more parents would impart this to their babies - and the sense of safety and love within it, too.
Here is a piece of the bands tragic history. Gillsburg, Miss (WVUE) - About 100 miles north of New Orleans, the rock-n-roll landscape was forever changed on Oct. 20, 1977. A plane carrying the band Lynyrd Skynyrd crashed in Gillsburg, Mississippi killing 6 out of 26 passengers. Among the dead were the band’s frontman Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines, and backup singer Cassie Gaines, who died on impact. The band had departed from Greenville, South Carolina for Baton Rouge to play a date at LSU as part of the Street Survivors tour. The flight was supposed to be the last for the band’s plane as the plan was to upgrade from an outdated Convair CV-240 to a Learjet in Baton Rouge. The plane ran out of gas en route to Louisiana and the pilots made an attempt to land at the McComb Airport to refuel. Instead, the plane crash-landed onto a property on Easley Road off of MS-568 15 miles West. The property owner, Dwain Easley, told the Daily Star that the night is forever burned into his mind and that he even helped pull bodies from the wreckage that night. “When we heard it, we thought it sounded like a car crash,” he said. “We started heading that way, and we could hear people crying for help”. “My first instinct was to go up there and try to help out on the scene. A lot of people think that Skynyrd was just a hard rocking southern band, but they have a lot of meaning in their lyrics. There's no banjo, but there are three guitars and one base guitar. It was known as the guitar army. If you go down the Skynyrd rabbit hole you will learn of the tragic events that this band and its members endured. At this time there's just one original member left alive, Gary Rossington one of the guitar players. He still tours with the latest version of the band when he's not recovering from heart problems. The lead singer, one of the guitarists, a backup singer, the road manager,the pilot and co pilot were killed when their plane crashed in a Mississippi swamp in 1977.

My only guess regarding the dislikes is Lynyrd Skynyrd used to fly the confederate flag in all his concerts. Some people take that the wrong way which is probably what those 76k did but when somebody grow up in the south born and raised some people just take it as their heritage. I live in the country/NC and on the back roads you will see those flags here and there.
EXACTLY! I’m a fellow North Carolinian, and was raised here in the Piedmont area in the middle of tobacco field’s and you’re 110% right! I’ve been down here for 33 years now, only moving further South to Louisiana for a few days when my ex was military. But NC is HOME and every time I leave my house in any direction I’m going, at least every other house/yard has our American flag, POW MIA Flag, and Confederate flags flying high. My own house has those flags, and it’s always been a flag that represents our Southern Heritage & pride and nothing else. I’m very blessed that my parents picked up and moved myself at age 3, and my brother from California down to NC and I’m never leaving bc this land and this Southern way of life is the only way to me, and most people around here. In the Netflix documentary entitled If I Leave Here Tomorrow, it had a segment about the recording of the song Simple Man. They had hired a producer who didn't really want them to record this song. Lead singer Ronnie Van Zant could be a physically intimidating at times. He led the producer out to his car, leaned in, and told him matter-of-factly they would let him know when they were done recording the song. The producer did not interfere.
This is my favorite Lynyrd Skynyrd tune, its so well crafted and heartfelt...that being said, there is absolutely no bad song by these guys. Old souls discovering life and telling us about it. Dive in, bro. I can't tell you how to navigate this band but try *Gimme Three Steps* and of course *Freebird* *Call Me The Breeze* speaks to the gypsy of the spirit, while *The Ballad Of Curtis Loew* is...well you just have to hear it. I have not seen it but I see the baby in the water. My oldest daughter was the YWCA's first swimming baby. She was 6 months maybe smaller. You gotta realize we survived in fluid, so it's only natural that a baby can swim. And it was super cool. I know she couldn't walk I don't remember now I was out long time ago

I've had a master playlist that I've been curating off and on for the last ten years (for reference, I'm 26, and I grew up with this music). In that entire time, my playlist has grown from 100 or so songs, to over 1,500 (with new additions seemingly every week), and this song, Simple Man, has been on every iteration of my playlist. Even more telling, in every iteration, the lowest that I've ranked this song (because I structure my playlist in terms of personal importance) is 10th. I've added a ton of songs in the past two years, and I'm currently in the process of restructuring the playlist. I don't see this song ever dropping out of the top 20 for me. On the 76000 dislikes I would attribute some of those to people who heard the shinedown version of this song before they heard the original. It’s not so much a dislike to the content but a dislike of the version. Personally I like Skynrd better but I’m old lol. Glad you enjoyed.

I hope you might be able to look into one of their other songs called The Ballad of Curtis Loew, because it's one of those songs that could never fail to bring someone to tears. They was a Southern Rock band one of the best they had a lot of good songs and some people didn’t like the fact that they had a rebel flag hanging behind them when they performed BUT that was the record company’s ideal not the bands . They got the name for the band from the gym teacher that use to pick on the boys with long hair as a joke and his name was spelled Lenard Skinner years later when they played in their home town of Jacksonville, Florida he introduced them before they come on stage .

Incredible song! Cool breezy rock with wise lyrics. Loved the depth in your reaction. I worked out (in my 40s!) that everyone is wise; 90-year-olds, 4-year-olds, all around the planet. As we grow older we accumulate experiences and some knowledge so that one day you might realise what your wisdom could be used for and how you can apply it.

You should check out Marcus King. I would say start off with Rita is Gone or Side Door (jam in a van versions) if you want to hear some really good modern "Southern Rock". He is a great guitarist and vocalist with an awesome band to back him up and not even in his thirties yet.
LS is another classic southern rock band and anyone from that generation knows their music. They have so many hits, Freebird is their most famous and you might have heard it before, that's how famous it is. It has one of the best guitar solos in history and it is highly recommended listening if you are trying to expand your music knowledge.

The tragedy marked a stopping point for the Jacksonville, Florida band that got their start recording in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, and innovating a sound that would become known as southern rock. They reunited with the surviving members in 1987 with Van Zant’s brother Johnny taking over on lead vocals. Today, there is a memorial at the plane crash site for fans to stop by and pay their respects.

On their fun side it would be, Gimme 3 steps. Free bird is an amazing show of their musicians. Sweet home Alabama is another must. They went through a terrible ordeal when their plane crashed and they lost some of their band family

I'm in my a white guy, mid 70s now, and was in my mid twenties or about your age when this song came out. IF I ever heard it it I paid no attention to it. A lot of people think that Skynyrd was just a hard rocking southern band, but they have a lot of meaning in their lyrics. There's no banjo, but there are three guitars and one base guitar. It was known as the guitar army. If you go down the Skynyrd rabbit hole you will learn of the tragic events that this band and its members endured. At this time there's just one original member left alive, Gary Rossington one of the guitar players. He still tours with the latest version of the band when he's not recovering from heart problems. The lead singer, one of the guitarists, a backup singer, the road manager,the pilot and co pilot were killed when their plane crashed in a Mississippi swamp in 1977.

My only guess regarding the dislikes is Lynyrd Skynyrd used to fly the confederate flag in all his concerts. Some people take that the wrong way which is probably what those 76k did but when somebody grow up in the south born and raised some people just take it as their heritage. I live in the country/NC and on the back roads you will see those flags here and there.
EXACTLY! I’m a fellow North Carolinian, and was raised here in the Piedmont area in the middle of tobacco field’s and you’re 110% right! I’ve been down here for 33 years now, only moving further South to Louisiana for a few days when my ex was military. But NC is HOME and every time I leave my house in any direction I’m going, at least every other house/yard has our American flag, POW MIA Flag, and Confederate flags flying high. My own house has those flags, and it’s always been a flag that represents our Southern Heritage & pride and nothing else. I’m very blessed that my parents picked up and moved myself at age 3, and my brother from California down to NC and I’m never leaving bc this land and this Southern way of life is the only way to me, and most people around here. In the Netflix documentary entitled If I Leave Here Tomorrow, it had a segment about the recording of the song Simple Man. They had hired a producer who didn't really want them to record this song. Lead singer Ronnie Van Zant could be a physically intimidating at times. He led the producer out to his car, leaned in, and told him matter-of-factly they would let him know when they were done recording the song. The producer did not interfere.
This is my favorite Lynyrd Skynyrd tune, its so well crafted and heartfelt...that being said, there is absolutely no bad song by these guys. Old souls discovering life and telling us about it.

I have not seen it but I see the baby in the water. My oldest daughter was the YWCA's first swimming baby. She was 6 months maybe smaller. You gotta realize we survived in fluid, so it's only natural that a baby can swim. And it was super cool. I know she couldn't walk I don't remember now I was out long time ago
I've played this for my only son to try and help him make good decisions in his life and sometimes he refers back too the song when talking to me . Be a simple kind of man my only son ❤️

I've had a master playlist that I've been curating off and on for the last ten years (for reference, I'm 26, and I grew up with this music). In that entire time, my playlist has grown from 100 or so songs, to over 1,500 (with new additions seemingly every week), and this song, Simple Man, has been on every iteration of my playlist. Even more telling, in every iteration, the lowest that I've ranked this song (because I structure my playlist in terms of personal importance) is 10th. I've added a ton of songs in the past two years, and I'm currently in the process of restructuring the playlist. I don't see this song ever dropping out of the top 20 for me. Great reaction. It’s always good to see someone appreciate a classic song like simple man. On the 76000 dislikes I would attribute some of those to people who heard the shinedown version of this song before they heard the original. It’s not so much a dislike to the content but a dislike of the version. Personally I like Skynrd better but I’m old lol. Glad you enjoyed.

Lynyrd Skynyrd is a catalog I hope you choose to go down... their lyrics are deep and full of meaning. Songs from the heart with a message. These songs helped form who I became in life.
They was a Southern Rock band one of the best they had a lot of good songs and some people didn’t like the fact that they had a rebel flag hanging behind them when they performed BUT that was the record company’s ideal not the bands . They got the name for the band from the gym teacher that use to pick on the boys with long hair as a joke and his name was spelled Lenard Skinner years later when they played in their home town of Jacksonville, Florida he introduced them before they come on stage .
The first time I heard Simple Man was the Seether cover of this song and it's very good too

Incredible song! Cool breezy rock with wise lyrics. Loved the depth in your reaction. I worked out (in my 40s!) that everyone is wise; 90-year-olds, 4-year-olds, all around the planet. As we grow older we accumulate experiences and some knowledge so that one day you might realise what your wisdom could be used for and how you can apply it.

You should check out Marcus King. I would say start off with Rita is Gone or Side Door (jam in a van versions) if you want to hear some really good modern "Southern Rock". He is a great guitarist and vocalist with an awesome band to back him up and not even in his thirties yet.

LS is another classic southern rock band and anyone from that generation knows their music. They have so many hits, Freebird is their most famous and you might have heard it before, that's how famous it is. It has one of the best guitar solos in history and it is highly recommended listening if you are trying to expand your music knowledge.
