I wish they offered transcriptions of the stories so people like me (who's a bit lost in accents since English isn't my first language) could enjoy them
I don't know if this will be helpful anymore after about a year, but what I found to be helpful was following along with the plot summary for the TARDIS fandom site of the specific story listened to, as it is usually pretty close to what is said. It's the best I could find as an alternative to a transcript. Hope it might help someone out there! :)

Thanks to Big Finish, the 6th Doctor has pretty much become my favorite classic era Doctor. I've also found myself listening to many classic era shows as if they are audios, as opposed to watching them, which really helps sell alot of the stories, without the distraction of outdated visuals.
I will also recommend the newly released Out of Time. I recommend it to newcomers to Big Finish because its the two most popular Doctors, 10th and 4th,teaming up in this one shot. Plus the story is very simple to follow.
Just bought it yesterday, will listen to it today later on but from what you've said I'm looking forward to it.

That order is perfect! Jubilee, Spare Parts, Fearmonger, Chimes. Chimes is a great capper on the "starter pack" cause anyone who wants to continue will have that as a leaping off point. A great choice for that!
Some of the other Big Finish audios on Spotify (outside of the Main Range) are season 1 and 2 of Cyberman, Dalek Empire and Dalek War, UNIT: Dominion, the 4th Doctor Adventures season 1 and 'I, Davros'/The Davros Mission. Even though 'I, Davros' is my favourite of the above, I suggest that you limit your imagination for the mutations and wastelands if you intend to watch Genesis shortly afterwards (which I have done and recommend).
Also I'm surprised that the show hasn't done a twist similar to Dominion.
Blood of the Daleks is also a good possible starting point. The Eighth Doctor Lucie Miller Adventures are a perfectly self-contained series and are probably the more "RTD Era Doctor Who" that there is apart from the actual RTD Era Doctor Who.
That was my first Big Finish story! I actually stumbled across it on Spotify by accident.
Yup, was also my first Big Finish audio drama.
If you're intimidated by classic doctors or the classic formula though, the tenth doctor box sets are a great way to start! And if you're not sure you'll enjoy it, you are able to get a lot of box set stories individually, for a much more reasonable price.
It's also worth noting that they've done box sets for 11 and 12 now, with an impressionist playing the main role - these are also a really good jumping on point!
This was a surprise! Got into Big Finish about 2 weeks ago and began with Jubilee followed by Spare Parts and Chimes of Midnight. Can definitely attest to the ease into Big Finish with these stories
I got into Big Finish a few years ago and my first story was Spare Parts, which I still own today. It is SO good. I love how creepy and unsettling it is, to me it's the best 5th Doctor story by Big Finish, and one I highly recommend.

I started with the 50th anniversary special audio, “the light at the end” and I HIGHLY recommend starting there. It gives you a good taste of the five main doctors of big finish (4-8) plus the main companions they use and the main master that they use do you get a good taste of everything big finish has to offer and the story is AMAZING! Although it may take 2 or 3 listens to fully figure it out.

If you want to get into River Song sets, pick up River Song vol. 3, it’s the best so far, River plays off great with the 5th Doctor, and the first episode “The Lady in the Lake” is one of the best written Doctor Who universe stories I’ve ever heard.
"Can you overlook the visuals?" Yep for me the visuals of classic Who and others shows of those decades are part of the appeal. I like the film color quality, the small sets, the rubber aliens, the fact that in any 60's show filmed in LA I'll get that 'hey Bronson canyon!' moment. Heck the simple b/w title sequence and a foggy junkyard are what got me into Doctor Who in the first place.
And I think that's one of the reasons I find audio difficult, because the visuals aren't there so thank you Nathanial for giving us some great jumping off points for getting into Big Finish.
It's part of the appeal for me too! It's so interesting to see how they did things back then, sometimes is really funny, and sometimes I get amazed with their ingenuity. And I actually think some old effects are better than the cgi of early seasons of new who.
The thing that was difficult for me and my bf watching 1st and 2nd doctors were the pacing, way more than the effects.
Excellent introduction to Big Finish audios. I bought the first CDs they produced back in 1999 (then ran out of space to store them) but got back into them when they made digital downloads available. I tend to focus on the 8th Doctor but other Doctors are included in my collection. So I'm really looking forward to Ecclestone making his debut!
Great video and selection. I found Big Finish really intimidating to get into. I started with Storm Warning but the four stories here are among my absolute favourites.
A great jumping point I’d recommend is Blood of the Daleks, and indeed the Eighth Doctor Adventures Series 1. Unlike the Main Range these are hour long single episode stories with a couple of two-parters, and lean a lot closer to New Series seasons for structure.
If people want to start with box sets, Doom Coalition is a great place to start. Aside from the companion carrying over from the last story all necessary information is given to the listener in the story and there’s a new villain who’s a really cool concept in that he’s a Time Lord who has the split personality of retaining the personalities of his ten previous incarnations.

I'm nearly done with BF's Dark Shadows audios and DW is my next thing I plan to jump fully into. Helpful video, I'm a lot more comfortable now as I was feeling pretty overwhelmed with where I should start.

Classic Who Doctors: Let me introduce ourselves...
Big Finish is the reason I feel ready to tackle Classic Who. I started by doing the River Song stories (I love her as a character), and then branched out into other Classic Doctor audio stories as she introduced me to them. Some of my favorite character moments are in Big Finish stories, and I love picturing them as spectacles without a budget.
I remember buying Sirens of Time in a shop but I didn't listen to it for years because I lost interest in Who until the new series started. So I then listened to it and decided I wanted to check out a few more so I 'got hold of' Spare Parts, The Juggernauts, The Genocide machine and I think Terra Firma. Gave them a listen and I was hooked. I subscribed to Big Finish for several years as well as collecting the back catalogue.
The problem is there is so much of it being released now its hard to keep up so it is a case of having to decide on certain audios.
I started collecting them back in 1999 when they first started, and within a few years the addition of all the new lines just made it prohibitively expensive. Now I just go for the special releases. I also recommend their Dark Shadows full cast audios. They are fantastic.
I'd recommend "Out of Time" featuring Tom Baker and David Tennant. Gives new audiences a Doctor they already know, number 10, and introduces them to classic Doctor legend, number 4! In a self contained hour long story thats fun and basic! And it's a great stepping in point! And it's self contained!
my friend who got me into doctor who and is a massive fan of it has never listened to Big finish, and i've always wanted to get him into it but have never been able to recommend anything to him (apart from saying "go and look on spotify") so this video will help with that so thank you for this video.
I'm so glad that a sixth doctor audio drama is the first one you recommended. I've seen all of Pertwee's doctor, and for some bizarre reason I felt like skipping ahead to the Twin Dilemma and the televised stories from the sixth doctor so far have been rough.

Big Finish occasionally airs Doctor Who audios on the Doctor Who RUclips channel; that's where I first heard some of them. The first full audio story that I heard was the Eighth Doctor story The Horror of Glam Rock on Spotify; I loved it!

Great recommendations for the first 4 to listen to, though I might save Chimes of Midnight til later given that it is all tied up with the events in Storm Warning....

Secondly the recommendations you gave were almost exactly the ones I was recommended by someone else a few years back. Jubilee, Spare Parts and Chimes of Midnight were 3 of the first 5 purchases I made from Big Finish. The other two were "The Holy Terror" and "Project: Twilight". I was already somewhat familiar with the classic era at that point so it wasn't as hard for me to get use to the way Big Finish audios went when it came to their Doctor Who stuff. It essentially felt like 4 part serials with each release. So I can attest to the choices made as good starting points.

Those are some really good recs. I got into Big Finish to listen to 8th Doctor stories after that 50th anniversary short with Paul McGann. But I really dug them in general and I've listened to a ton of them at this point. I do love because they are audio stories they can be much more varied in time and place then the show can and feature a lot more alien aliens.

They even have their own series with seasons 1 and 2 on Spotify. They're alright but probably not the best 'Doctorless' audios. Might help to listen to Sword of Orion with 8 and Charlie as a Prologue/for context.

This was Great!
Big Finish as a company *Started* with Doctor Who, during the "Wilderness Years" (after the classic series ended, and before the modern reboot was a twinkle in RTD's eye), as a way to keep the show and the characters from dying. So that's why the first stories are structured like Classic Who (a new story every month, with four half-hour episodes, the first three of which end on a cliffhanger): so fans could get their weekly fix of a Doctor Who episode on Saturday evening at supper time.
And here's an advantage of audio dramas, in general: If you play them in stereo, and position your chair in the room just right (or listen on headphones), _you can hear the monster of the week coming up behind you, just like the characters in the story_ . Whereas when you watch the story through a screen, the whole world is contained in a box in front of you.
I'm personally a fan of the 42 arc and word lord related stories.
Though a problem I have is in multidoctor stories that older Peter Davison is easy to mistake for Colin Baker and Paul Mcgann when its voice only.

I got into big finish through The Lives of Captain Jack Volume one. Each story were just different parts of Jack's life and are all disconnected with eachother which made it great. It's been a while but I'll be doing volumes two and three. I'll probably move on to the time war series as I reabbly want to listen to Terry Meloy as Davros again.
I think a properly stand-alone, context-free story might be a good start too. I, Davros is pretty singular, right?
It’s also four parts. So that’s a bigger ask for a starter.

I’ve actually only listened to 3 Big Finish stories as of now, and have been looking for more. Definitely going to take a look at the ones recommended! I had started with 10th Doctor Adventures Volume 1, listened to Time Apart: Ghost Station, and actually just listened to Spare Parts (loved it). I’m very eager to get into this plethora of Doctor Who stories.

I have been meaning to get into the Big Finish productions. I have several, from Big Finish promotions where they generally cost about 2 pounds/dollars and through Humblebundle. Looking at my collection I actually have 3 of the 4 stories you mention. Definitely time for another try.

From a financial standpoint, I'd also recommend Short Trips. They're digital only releases that sell for $2.99 USD (for the most part, there are some exceptions). Like it says on the tin, these are much shorter adventures; they're only approximately half an hour.
That being said, the Short Trips are not full cast audio dramas. They are audiobooks
(so if also you have an issue with the first three Doctors being re-cast-- some people do and that's fine-- the Short Trips would be much more ideal for you because it's not a re-cast in that regard, it's an audiobook).
My own recommendation would be a Second Doctor Short Trip called, "The Last Day at Work" (which is free)
Agreed. I really like the Short Trips too. I particularly enjoyed "How to Win Planets and Influence People" (4th Doctor), "Flight to Hull" (10th Doctor), "Earthbound" (3rd Doctor), and "The Astrea Conspiracy" (12th Doctor).

Nice recommendations! I actually haven't listened to Jubilee, but all the others you mentioned I have heard and think they're pretty good. I would definitely add to the list The Foe from the Future (4th Doctor & Leela; not Main Range but still available for free on Spotify), Whispers of Terror (6th Doctor & Peri), and Colditz (7th Doctor & Ace). Those three are some of the best Doctor Who stories I've had the privilege to experience, and I'd say I definitely prefer them over Spare Parts and The Fearmonger. I have a hard time getting into anything with the Fifth Doctor on audio in general, so that's part of why Spare Parts didn't stand out to me as much.

I have recently just got into Doctor who big finish and im LOVING IT, these are the stories I've listened too so far.(in order)
1. The War Master - beneath the Viscoid
2. Time apart(5th Doctor)
3. The Tenth Doctor adventures volume 01
4. thin time/madquake(5th Doctor)
5. the Lovecraft invasion(6th Doctor)
6. Out of Time(10th and 4th Doctor)
My favourite so far has to be time apart because it was the first adventure with a doctor i listened to and the whole experience was just SOOO Serial.
The worst has to be the Tenth doctor adventures which is a shame because the doctor and Donna are two of my favourite doctor companion dynamics but it was a very safe set of stories but still enjoyable and fun.
New releases that i am looking out for next is a flying dutchman adventure which i believe is McCoy and Ace, also the Mcgann time lord Victorious stuff and the Tenth doctor and River song set interest me.
I really wish i had gotten into big finish sooner its opening up a wide range of Doctor who that i haven't thought of before and its keeping me sustained till the special in new year.
Also i was wondering if people could give me advice on new ways to listen too big finish as while I'm enjoying its still hard to adjust to the the just listening and no visuals, the way im doing it now is putting in earpods, sitting on my bed in the dark and closing my eyes.

Big finish Doctor Who is more Doctor Who than the actual modern show, imo.
Najawin Big finish experiments. We don’t get the same companions from modern day Earth or the same generic stories. They might not always succeed but when they do we get stories Scherzo, Chimes of midnight or The Holy terror. Big finish can be silly but they don’t lampshade villains like Modern Who. For example the Sontaran’s might a silly concept for some but classic Doctor Who and Big finish will treat it seriously. Modern Who takes away any of the threat they might of had and trade it for someone like Stax. Big finish like Classic Who is ambitious. I get why Modern Who is less willing to be ambitious because they’re a visual medium but classic Doctor Who would go beyond they’re budget. Big finish replicates that kind of ambitious story telling. I could continue but I ramble.
Najawin Big finish uses its sci-fi time travel concept and goes all out. Modern Doctor Who, while it is good, sticks to the same formula. Modern day companion, mostly modern day stories, quirky Doctors with an edge but not too much of an edge otherwise the audience won’t like them etc. Doctor Who was always a weird show that would push the boundaries and I feel that Big finish continues that tradition more than the new show does.

I dont know if you know this but if you ever wanted to see how the Doctor would fare in a superhero team like the Avengers or JLA, you should read Mark Waid's Irredeemable. It's a story about a superman analogue who goes rogue. Its genuinely one of the scariest comics I ever read. The Avengers/JLA analogue mixes analogues of characters from both teams including the afformentioned Doctor analogue.
The Tenth Doctor Adventures are a good starting point if you're only familiar with New Who, since they are pretty similar to Russel era stories.
The only big finish I've listen to is "the diaries of River Song" so I dont know that much about big finish, but I found that if theres a particular doctor that you like, or separated character(like Missy(/Master) or River Song) then go for it.
I plan to pick up Echoes of Extinction when it comes out and use that as a test :)
I recommend Legacy Of Time, War Master 4, The Last Adventure, Classic Doctors New Monsters 1 and Doctor Of War 1. Also big finish do sales on their website which are usually really good.
I started with Spare Parts, as Cybermen are my favourites and since then focused on them exclusively. Cyberman the series, Silver Turk, Last of the Cybermen (which as an aside would have been 1000% a better introductory story to the 6th Doctor than Twin Dilemma) etc
My 14yo niece is a big fan of Nu Who and I recently introduced her to Big Finish via Spare Parts too. She's loving it so far. I might reverse your recommendation and choose Jubilee as her second story. Still haven't gotten around to Chimes of Midnight myself yet.
If you haven't listened to The Chimes of Midnight then give it a go. It's by Robert Shearman (who also wrote Jubilee) so that should be reason enough to give it a shot ;)
I decided to start listen Bid Finish because of eighth doctor. I liked him in the movie (the only thing I like about this movie) and I want to know more about him. It was the great decision)

There's also a free library service called Hoopla. If you check your local library, they should have this and that service has the same audios as Spotify has and it's also absolutely free as long as you have a library card
Personally i started with the war doctor, continued onto classic doctors new monsters and the war master, then i went straight onto neverland and zagreus which mightve been jumping in at the deep end. A few years ago i tried to listen to spare parts and jubilee but just couldnt get into the audio format but after john hurts death i decided i wanted more from his doctor and suddenly i didnt have a problem with the format anymore. After neverland and zagreus i made my way through whatever sounded good for free, master, omega, davros, fearmonger, marian conspiracy, i davros, dalek empire, unit dominion and all the eigth doctor main range leading up to neverland woth the standouts being chimes and seasons of fear, then i started buying them at least once or twice a month h9nestly its a little addictive but i couldnt be happier as i have discovered a gold mine of doctor who content that i honestly believe to be better than both classic who and new who and sadly to many people are wont even dip their toes in to try it
To be fair, I "grew up" (lol) in the 1970s with Who on PBS and even then, many people had trouble with the visuals. I love the cheap visuals and the shoestring craft behind them. My only problem with classic Who is the pacing, but that's more an issue with the 60s monochrome stories. All of Hartnell's stories took me multiple tries to watch because I kept falling asleep! Fortunately, Big Finish tends to be paced well.
A good list of suggestions, but I think for a lot of people starting with 2 hour stories can be daunting. so I would also suggest:
The first few seasons of Short Trips - Short Trips started out as 5-15 minute stories (These days they're 40min).
8th Doctor Adventures: Although there's no huge stand outs like Chimes of Midnight or Scherzo, it's consistently high quality, you can feel the influence of newwho on it & Lucie Miller rocks.
Torchwood: Fall to Earth: Other than Children of Earth, I didn't really like torchwood on TV. But I love the monthly series. And this one: Yanto saving the world while talking to a telemarketer - what's not to love?
Also worth checking out some stories outside of Doctor Who to get into the format: Their adaption of the Picture of Dorian Gray is fantastic.
Also the destiny of the doctor series is a good place to start (I know it’s free on Apple Music Dno if it is on Spotify), though not the most mind blowing stories they can help get you used to the format of audio as you can pick a doctor or companion you’re familiar with

You see I'm French and as a fellow whovian, I'd like to get into Big Finsh audio stories. Hearing them in English really don't bother me (I love that language even more than my native one 😅) but do the stories come with subtitles or a script I can follow while listening to it, so that i can't get lost ?

Jubilee is so good. I spent an audible credit on it after watching this video and it's great. Not my first big finish audio production and also not my first sixth doctor story, but so far it's my favourite of either of those.
Surprise appearance by Martin Jarvis (always a delight) and despite its adaptation into series one's Dalek, the story is very unique and separate from the tv story.
From my days listening to radio dramas another thing I would suggest in listening to these productions is to actually listen. Don't think of it as just background music or try to follow whist concentrating on something else. Give it your full attention and try to avoid distraction like checking your email and such like.

I've been listening to some of the Big Finish through my library. I actually really hate audiobooks...fiction anyway .... but audio dramas I seem to be fine with. Started off with the the Diary of River Song on some Torchwood ones at he moment
Useful in that its free but not a big selection, especially at the moment when the library isn't open so only have them online rather than the physical copies

I have discovered, to my great delight, that a local website buys audio CD's from Big Finish and then sells them through their site. It's a quick delivering service, so I get my audios through there, rather than the actual site. (It's complicated to explain the whole thing, it's just quicker for me to buy them there) My very first boxset I got from a Big Finish stand at a con though.
If you buy CDs direct from Big Finish you also get the download version for free, so you can listen to it straight away whilst you are waiting for your CDs to be delivered.

Other Recommendations:
. War Master, only need to watch Utopia
. Classic Doctor new monsters- the highlight of this is Night of the Vashta Nerada from Boxset 2. New who run time and villains.
. Master, again might know this from New Who. Same for Davros
. Unbound Series (specifically Deadline)
. Eye of the Scorpian/The Church and the Crown- entry points for Erimen's adventures with the 5th Doctor, would recommend the Church and the Crown a bit more even though it's her second story. The best story with her overall is the Kingmaker. AVOID NEKROMANTIA.
. Blood of the Daleks parts 1 & 2 if you want an introduction to McGann but your only frame of reference
is new who, this might be better than starting with Storm Warning and taking in the Charlie era
. Silver Turk- if you liked the Haunting of Villa Diodati maybe give this is a try.
. The Harvest, good introduction to Hex. Ace is almost a different character in this to how she was in classic who, 7 is fully formed so its a good soft reboot for characters that have a lot of continuity behind. Good episodes in this run are The Settling, Enemy of the Daleks. However, you might want to listen to the Evelyn and 6 Doctor (Project Twilight, Project Destiny) stuff as well to get context for some of the later stories in this. Also maybe check out 45
. The Reaping for the best introduction to Six and Peri
Oh good one! Classic Doctors, New Monsters I always felt was designed to be a starting point for those wanting to get into Big Finish

Why not? Evelyn is easily one of the best characters to ever be in Dr who and most of her run is extremely good. jubilee, Dr who and the pirates, and arrangements for war in particular are some of the best Doctor who stories ever made. This is without even mentioning that a large part of why the 6th doctor became so much more popular after big finish is due to the Evelyn run, so you'd be missing the main reason people praise big finishes 6th doctor stories so much.

Great recommendations. It’s funny, but as someone who started out with Classic Who in the 70’s, Big Finish helped make New Who more palatable.

I started via Audible but migrated pretty fast to the original source :)
Nevertheless there is one Audio Book, that you mentioned that divides my opinion:
The Chimes of Midnight
The Story, a very cool murder mystery is great, as is the cast, but by god has anyone ever counted how often the word “plum pudding” is used in this story?
I think it takes a bit of the atmosphere because it isn’t even funny after some time.
That notion doesn't make it bad, on the contrary, but sometimes this very frequent repetition in The Chimes of Midnight is annoying.
However, that one factor shouldn't be a reason for anyone to stop.
These stories are just awesome and deserve everyone who gets involved with them :)

I think I'd start with a doctor/companion I really liked, probably classic era as it's been so long since I heard anything new from that era. My problem is finding the time, especially with audiobooks on the go.
