Yes, It's so goddamn annoying. People don't realise how annoying it can be a Doctor Who fan in Australia. I want to get the 13th Doctor Electronic TARDIS but here it's around $60.
only good thing was that in Sydney I didn’t have to pre order or pay $300 for the season 26 box set I got it 2 weeks after release by just walking into the store
@@Callumari13 It is more annoying if you are living in continental Europe and Amazon UK cancels your pre-orders in late December due to Brexit, by a time when the set is sold out everywhere.
I bought a series 18 Blu Ray, but I left it at my parents' place when I went on vacation. I'm thinking about buying it again because I really liked what I saw.
Personally, I started collecting the Blu-rays as I've not delved too deep into the classic series. So, for the most part, these collections are my first experiences with the stories. Although I mainly find myself just staring at Lee Binding's incredible artwork more than the stories haha I'm not the biggest fan of the limited edition nature of the releases ATM. Each time they're announced, I won't stop stressing til I've ordered them cause I'm worried about losing out like with the first edition of Season 12. Plus I think these box sets had such potential for new fans to get more into the classic series - such as myself - but even getting one is so difficult that I think it's off putting for people. Though I can't fault the effort put into every aspect of the releases. The special features, the optional effects/sound, the artwork, the restoration. The amount of love put in is so prevalent, and I love them.
I've bought some of these collections purely for the Behind the Sofa segments. Anytime Janet Fielding and Sarah Sutton are brought in, I love it. And Sophie Aldred looks so amazed at every episode, it's adorable.
I'm actually working on a project to remaster Babylon 5 (another amazing Sci-Fi series stuck in low resolution hell) with a few others to 4k using Neural Networks and so far the results are amazing, will gladly turn my attention over to some of the Classic Doctor Who stories I own on DVD when that project is done.
I really think they’d be a lot of demand for a decent B5 Blueray release. The good thing with B5 is it was shot on 35 mm film, so the live action scenes would look great. I understand that it’s the CGI effects that are the problem. Best of luck with your project, it sounds great!
THANK YOU for doing a side by side comparison of the picture quality! With the 80s stuff, in particular, I've had moments where I've been watching it and gone "is this really any different from the DVD?" so it's good to finally see there's some improvement on the videotape quality. When these blu-rays were first announced I had zero interest because I thought how much better can they get than the DVDs? It was a combination of the beautiful packaging and the fact that The Tom Baker Years was on the Season 12 set that made me bite the bullet. Obviously now I'm in it for the long haul, but as nice as the new features are some sets do feel like less of a necessity than others. Season 26 didn't feel like there was that much extra stuff they could add, and while I commend them for adding VHS edits of Fenric and Battlefield, I can't say it's something I'm that fussed about rewatching!
@@TheMelloyMan revenge of the Cybermen, brain of morbius, the five doctors, day of the daleks, pyramids of Mars, seeds of death, robots of death, and the Cushing movies.
I got screwed by amazon on season 12. Preordered the new release back in February and had it set to be delivered to my parents as I'm normally out at work so wouldn't be in to receive it. Contacted them recently to arrange for the parcel to now be delivered to my home as I'm working from home and my parents are self isolating so I didn't want it going there. They changed the address and somehow that reset my order and now it just says they'll email me when back in stock! I called them to ask what was going on and essentially their response was "tough luck".
Great video, Josh. I started with the first VHS Revenge of the Cybermen, way back when, and having completed my collection years ago, went on to DVDs, special releases etc. etc.! Having spent thousands of UK £'s on Who merchandise over the years, I'm being selective with the Blu-ray Collection range, although the animations are an absolute must! Really enjoyed Faceless Ones, and looking forward to Fury from the Deep! Roll on, Evil of the Daleks, Masterplan, Wheel in Space, Marco Polo, and Abominable Snowmen!
The North American releases come in standard Bluray cases, so I imagine that they’ll get repackaged that way eventually. The problem is that they’ve decided to stop the inserts for us too so good luck finding what special feature you want to watch without having to try all the discs 🤦♂️
The ironic thing is, the US sets I've found have a rather substantial increase in price from their European counterparts - so much so that even including shipping, I still found pre-ordering the European sets to be cheaper.
Kyle Borcz Oh my god, thank you! I’ve been sooo annoyed by the missing inserts, I have to spend 30 minutes Googling which feature is on which disc. How much could it possibly cost to print out a piece of paper??
If you have a local Barnes and Noble, they always have a 50% off British Television sale the week of release. I've gotten all but 1 of the sets 39$ or below but I believe it's in-store only?
Seeing that the season sets are scalped is mind blowing. In the states, they're basically on clearance, selling for $30 each, but instead of being in really nice boxes, they're in standard Blu-ray arm cases.
The North American releases for every season of The Collection are actually still in print and are pretty affordable ranging between $30-$50 Canadian (though only after a few months of already being released). The only downside is we get them in standard bluray cases (that vary in size and some have slipcovers while others don't). Plus we gotta wait 3-4 months after it comes out everywhere else.
It's worth noting that with North American box sets the packaging is just standard Blu-Ray packaging with a cardboard sleeve, and the size varies between releases.
Great video, Josh. I just wanted to make a few points, if I may, and I apologize for the length of the comment: Firstly, yes the SD footage is upscaled, but this is not simply a case of zooming in the SD footage to fill an HD frame. The H264 codec used for Blu-ray video allows less compression artefacts and a truer presentation of the quality of the source material, with less video noise and better inter-frame interpolation. Also, from my limited knowledge, the wider color gamut available on Blu-ray allows the colors of the original 2" (and later 1") videotape material to be represented more authentically through better chroma sampling than they could be on DVD (which uses MPEG-2 compression and 4:2:0 chroma sampling). As you say, where any original location film survives for a story it has been restored in true HD; a practice which was also employed for some of the DVD releases. Spearhead from Space is the only true high-definition Doctor Who story on Blu-ray, as I am sure you know, as it was shot entirely on film. Regarding which stories receive 5.1 mixes, I think that the availability of clean elements (studio sound, ADR, sound effects and music) is only one part of it. It definitely helps, especially with regards to some of the 1980s stories that still have clean, isolated music in the BBC archives and clean studio sound/dialogue from the so-called "'71 edits" made at the time (e.g. Remembrance of the Daleks, Ghost Light to name but two). But I also think that the nature and/or popularity of a story has a bearing on which stories receive the 5.1 treatment too. For example, Dalek stories are always popular, so "Planet" and "Genesis" have surround sound mixes. What's remarkable about these stories is that none of the separate dialogue and music stems exist (apart from the Radiophonic Workshop sound effects, which exist for every story), so the only surviving mixes for these stories are the monaural transmission mixes. The fact that Mark Ayres has not only been able to "stereoize" them but also create six-channel surround sound mixes from a single-channel mono mix is something to be marveled at. (Note also that all of the DVDs have lossy Dolby Digital tracks; the Blu-ray episodes all have lossless DTS-HD Master Audio tracks that is bit-for-bit identical to the master mixes, be it the transmission- or the new surround sound mixes. In that respect, the Blu-ray audio beats the DVD releases hands down.) The optional CGI is a welcome addition and it doesn't bother me that it is not available on every story. I can only speak for myself but as a purist, I generally enjoy watching stories with their original sound mixes (be it mono or stereo) and their original effects. Having the option to turn on CGI effects and/or a surround sound mix is nice when the mood takes me, but that isn't always the case. Kudos to the BBC for porting over all of the DVD special features as well as giving us a host of amazing new ones. I'll say this, though - the "Jim'll Fix It" extra from The Two Doctors DVD won't be made available on the Blu-ray range at all. Whatever the late personality may or may not have done in his private life, any fans who may enjoy a sense of nostalgia that this small extra inspires will likely want to hang onto their Two Doctors DVD. Note also the brief shot of Rolf Harris in the "Evolution of the Invasion" documentary on The Invasion DVD, which is also likely to be an issue when the story comes up for a Blu-ray release. I agree with you in disliking the use of participants in the "Behind the Sofa" segments who were not involved in the stories being watched. I've nothing against these outside parties, but these segments -- in my view -- would be better if they solely featured the original members of the story's cast and crew. If that means the segments are shorter, then so be it. In terms of price and availability, I'm not 100% convinced that these sets are limited editions (a la the first Key to Time DVD set released in the UK, which was numbered). I think the initial printing runs are limited, hence some of them quickly selling out, but they eventually come back in stock after being reprinted. Three times I went to order some of the US box sets but they were unavailable on the day of their release, if not shortly afterwards. They eventually came back in stock, though. From experience, the US sets seem to be more readily available than their UK counterparts (although they are released later in the US). It should also be noted that a few of the Blu-ray sets in all regions have had pressing errors in their original runs (missing DVD-ROM extras, CGI problems, frame rate issues, misspelled credits on episodes, etc.) that have necessitated the repressing of problematic discs. However, fans are able to contact the BBC to get replacement discs, which are mailed at no cost to the consumer provided you are able to show proof of purchase. I speak from experience on this. One could argue that -- despite the flaws you mention -- the designs of the UK box sets are better than the US sets, not least because the UK sets have extensive new artwork on foldout panels and booklets but the US sets reset the season numbers for each Doctor. For example, Tom Baker's first season is marketed as the "Tom Baker Season One" set in the States, whereas it's (rightly) referred to as Season 12 in the UK, taking the "classic series" into account as a whole. A small, but annoying, difference. Conversely, some of the US sets come with slipcases and/or inserts outlining the disc contents whilst others do not. This, too, results in a lack of conformity on a fan's shelf but at least one can discard the slipcases if one wants to and simply keep the main sets with their outer plastic cases. Should fans buy the Blu-ray range? I strongly think so. Sure, you spent a load of money over the years getting them on Betamax, VHS, LaserDisc (if you were minted) and DVD but you can sell these and make a little bit of money to put towards getting them on Blu-ray. The Blu-rays offer the show in the best available quality to date, have a huge amount of special features, and the funds go towards maintaining the preservation of Doctor Who on home video. I highly doubt that 4K releases or 8K releases will be forthcoming any time in the next few years, but if or when they do the BBC will really have to push the boat out to get fans to buy them again. We'd be talking Dolby Atmos or DTS:X audio and perhaps AI-enhanced video transfers that further upscale and improve upon the HD versions. On that note, it will be interesting to see how the BBC tackles Blu-ray releases of the 1960s stories. Setting aside stories that are missing or incomplete, copies of 1960s stories were retained on 16mm film, which were captured from the videotape masters before they were wiped. Will scanning these 16mm films in HD (or 2K or higher) yield even better results than the DVD release? I presume so, especially given the rapid progress of technology and the increased video- and audio quality that the Blu-ray format allows. One can dream, but wouldn't it be amazing to have, say, The Dalek Invasion of Earth or Tomb of the Cybermen in HD with an optional 5.1 track? Anyway, great job on the video and thank you for your time.
One point that you didn’t address, maybe you don’t even know about, is that many of the DVDs have been discontinued and are hard to find in North America. Individual stories are up to $80-100 CAD from resellers. These blu ray box sets can be cheaper than one of the stories inside on DVD!
Dan Collins one of the reasons why I picked up season 19. Earthshock has been out of print for many years and goes for an insane amount of money. Although interestingly enough they have re released several out of print stories starting in June of last year. They’ve also re released stories that are already available in the boxsets such as revenge of the cybermen, battlefield, ghost light and a few others. From what I’ve been able to find they haven’t announced any other re releases since January, which is frustrating because I don’t know if I should buy season 26 or wait for curse of fenric to be re released lol.
The normal blu-rays work too. I’ve been collecting them a lot lately. Thank you for all your wonderful content, Josh Snares! You’re one of the reasons I’ve been watching a lot of Classic Who lately. I hope all of Classic Who is added to Blu-ray. (This is my first collection, so I’d have no problem upgrading.)
I actually had never seen Trail of a Time Lord until I bought this vox set. I really enjoyed it. Too bad Colin Baker wasn't given one more season, and a proper regeneration.
Personally I love em! As an American Whovian, we don’t get the fancy box sets. However I like how the Blu Ray cases are smaller and take up less space. Plus after a few months they tend to get cheaper, I’m very much looking forward to having a complete classic series Blu ray collection one day!
Seriously considering getting the season 10, 12, 18 and 19 Blu-Rays because of the 16mm on location filmed sequences that can be re scanned in HD, however I'm not sure about the season 23 and 26 sets, because after season 22 everything was shot purely on tape that won't look any better than the DVDs.
seasons 10 and 12 have zero surviving 16mm film elements season 18 I think only has the brief Brighton Beach sequence at the beginning Season 19 is the only one (and will remain so) with a significant amount of genuine HD material People often forget that the vast majority of the 16mm film was quickly destroyed
Saying they won't look any better actually isn't true. The Blu-rays have a vastly higher bit rate and don't use the compression codecs that were needed for the DVDs, so the images do look much cleaner and much closer to the original transmission tapes. You may not notice it in brief and highly-compressed online clips, but the improvement is most certainly there.
@@theastrogamer710 No, not really. It's never been the BBC's practice (or indeed pretty much any other production company) to hold onto all the original elements that made up the programmes. Once the final edit of a programme has been made and it's been transmitted, there's usually no reason to hang onto it anymore. So material that has survived is often down to luck than a deliberate decision (Shada aside).
Being from Watford in the UK I have bought all of the Doctor Who collection Seasons in a shop called CeX by the standard package additions which come in as they say dual cases Blu-ray. I've had no problem in obtaining them for me they have cost me between £18.00-£30.00 no problems and their bonus features are absolutely fantastic the episodes themselves are nostalgic to watch.
I've been watching Doctor Who since the 70's. I got really hooked in 1985 with the Target novels and been collecting the VHS, DVD's and now the BluRay's. Yes I will continue to buy them as long as they are available. To me, even though the image isn't progressively better, I don't care so much as I do having the series to watch when I want to. There was a time when it was not so available and we had to BEG our local PBS stations in the USA to show them... one episode a week. Now I can't complain. Keep them coming!
It's probably a regional thing, but as a US fan, I think they are. I started Doctor Who late in my life (18-19 years old). And buy the time I had a job, income, and could start buying, most of the classic series DVDs in region 1 were out of print and expensive (to name some examples I recall seeing: The Two Doctors- $130.00 USD, The War Games- $110.00, The Curse of Fenric- $70.00). (Disclaimer, some of the DVDs have been re-printed). So I think it's worth it personally
Just finished season 19 Bluray boxset and loved it so much. The highlight has definitely been all the banter between the 5th Doctor’s TARDIS team which has to me elevated what I used to think of ‘mid-tier’ Who to some of my favourites, just because I love them so much off screen! Davison and Fielding are the best!
Thank god they are being released as seasons rather than per story basis. I have collected every single one to date but there are a lot of negatives to these sets as mentioned in the video.
So, in order to make purchasing these sets easier the BBC has decided to release these Collection sets in 2 versions - Standard (in typical Blu-Ray packaging) and Limited (fancier packaging). Good thinking on their part. Also, loved the video Josh! :)
I currently have season 19 on blu ray because NYSSAA!!!!! Ahem. I mean it was in my local dvd shop for a decent price. But I’m also planning on getting season 26 because it is quite possibly my favourite doctor who series ever and most stories were done on location meaning I can guess the quality may really pay off.
I have most of the slimmer US releases, but for the last two its been importing it from the UK. Hopefully my season 9 will get here intact and not too long after it releases
For me, it's a pure convenience. As an American fan, DVD's were non-existent, minus one instance I managed to pick up 'Android Invasion' at a Costco somehow. And if you think the Australian Collections were bad, you've yet to see the American Blu Ray collections. For one, the titles are changed. No longer is it "Series 12", but now "Season 1", treating it as the start of a Tom Baker era rather that a continuation of previous Who, which is a pain for collecting. However the biggest pain is that the collections here are purely what comes in the box. There's no pizazz or anything, no extra artwork, no large box to hold it in, it's a standard Blu Ray case with discs jammed in. On one hand, it's amazing to watch some of my favorite episodes for the first time in this way, but everything else about the Collections here in America really isn't worth it.
In Germany, even though we don't have most of Classic who. What is cool, is that individual Stories get bluray releases once the collection boxset has been released. I for example have a bluray copy of The Visitation for example and a lot of the same extras are also included
I'd be more included if they started with Pertwee season 7 and worked their way through to season 26 and then released a full animated lost story version of seasons 1 through 6.
Josh do you have any suggestions about where a fellow Aussie fan can get some of the individual Classic stories on DVD, cause they only stock a few specific choices at JB Hi-Fi and I can't really find any other places, either in store or online, that have any. Make me miss the days when the ABC shop was around and stocked rows and rows of Doctor Who DVDs...
One thing to keep in mind is the occasional faults they sometimes have. They seem to have settled down but at the start I got about 3 replacement discs for Revenge of the Cybermen, and it still isn't fixed. Plus spelling mistakes on recreated story credits.
Also, the logo on the box sets is the current series logo; what if they don't release all the seasons before the next era starts and the logo changes? At least the DVD releases have a consistent design, even up to now with the animated releases (on the reversible cover).
{insert-name-here} The team behind the ranges said that they’d keep this logo even if it changes. I doubt that but in fairness the DVD files kept the Eccleston/Tennant era logo until the end even during Matt Smith’s era.
Thankfully, the biggest worry people have with these releases (the limited edition part) has now been removed thanks to the Standard Edition releases Although because i’m a perfectionist, I still tried my best to get the older sets in the original packaging for decent prices (it took a while but I was successful)
I’ve just started buying the Blu-ray’s since I’m trying to get into Doctor Who itself. I’ve so far loved the new series and finished David Tennant’s run but as for the classic series I’ve been buying them up since I’ve never seen them and well I usually don’t like using streaming services. So far the only one I’m missing is Colin Baker’s set but that’s due to price since in the US it doesn’t suffer from the the limited edition type run the UK and other places get
I sadly missed out on the Season 12 set, and it's not being re-released in Aus, but I've made sure to get the others (19, 18, 10, 23 and 26), and I love them all dearly.
Being a huge doctor who fan and a massive collector, I wanted these sets after i missed out on season 12 the first time around and since I've purchased every one including the season 12 re release. I know what you mean with flimsy packaging, this happened with season 26 when the disc holder came off the spine which I was annoyed about but luckily I got a replacement sent out. As long as these boxsets come out and I have the money, I'll be purchasing them, I never had all the classic who dvds and I'm more of a blu ray collector so these were up my street. I also love watching a lot of these stories for the first time, which I can't wait to o with season 14 when that arrives.
For availability, it depends on where you are. Since the classic series in't that popular in the US, it is probably best for Americans fans such as myself to wait a few months to get them as they tend to receive prices drops online. However, like an idiot, I still preorder them rather than waiting. The US boxes aren't as elaborate as the U.K. and Australian boxsets - they are in large blurry plastic box and that is it.
I still have all my VHS tapes and will cherish them!! I never knew, until recently, that standard DVDs are compressed which, not only affects the pitch slightly but also the duration of the DVD. You will see this in difference between films on TV compared to Netflix. This is also noted on Blu ray and definitely 4K. The last two mentioned are basically, higher quality versions of the original show in resolution and tempo.
And I collected the laserdiscs 😅Living in Australia , I have the UK sets sent out by Forward2Me in Preston. They repackage parcels sent by Amazon - then forward via DHL to Australia . Costly , but you can send several items in one shipment . For example , Season 12 comes out next Monday and will have it Friday 😀I can’t help myself either and collect waaaaay too much 😅
@@movieflicktube ‘Contains discs’ ? Not really - that’s why they pushed back the original re-release date by 3 weeks. I received my copy of season 12 re-release yesterday & it has the correct discs so they fixed the problem Pre-release & the season 12 re-release doesn’t contain season 10 discs.
@@nathanthomas5133 I should have said “some” had incorrect labels . In any case , all releases are being reissued in standard blu ray cases as announced 24/04
I own leisure hive and Revenge of the cybermen from Ebay the masters are okay I'm really interested to see what they can do with Pertwee's first two seasons.
Great video! Personally I love these sets, they’re affordable here in the US even if we don’t get fancy box sets. The fact that complete Classic Who seasons are coming out is frankly awesome!
Totally agree Josh, after collecting all the DVDs I was sceptical about buying the Blu Ray boxsets after all they were never broadcast in HD. But it was good to see you show the improved video and sound quality. I will definitely only get a few of them...mainly Tom's seasons in this format...and wait to see if they re-release them again for the other Doctors. Another great video Josh!
Yes i agree its nice to save space and line up the spines.I can't bring myself currently to turn them sideways though as i'm loving the front artwork on each set.
I bought the VHS and Target novelizations back in the wilderness years. I bought the DVDs. I bought the special edition versions of the same stories on DVD. I bought a couple of Blu-rays. Now that I have Brit Box, I've been thinking about space. Should all the DVDs join the VHS in long term storage? Should I look into selling them? Being a grown up sure is hard.
Well, i bought a Blu-ray player about a month ago and just ordered every Collection box that is out (max i payed for a box was 60€) and i pre-orered Season 2. I hope that one day, every season will be out in a box.
I got into Doctor Who in 2014, so I missed out on a lot of the Region 1 DVDs. I’ve managed to pick up a few here and there, most of them from physical Barnes and Noble bookseller. Ive stopped buying the DVDs for Doctors 3 and up because blu-rays give me a chance to fill in what I missed. Also in replacing the ones I’ve already bought, it saves space. I just bought Season 26 (Sylvester McCoy season 3 here in region 1 land) from the B&N site.
Plus side for American viewers, while our Blu-ray’s don’t come in the luxurious packaging like yours and just a standard case, because of the cheeped casing, these releases seem to not be going out of print
As someone who never owned them on vhs or dvd, and in America the reprints from BBC America in the startanded blue ray boxes will actually go one sale a lot. I've been able to get all but the latest one for $9usd
Prices going up isn't a problem in the US. I believe all of them are still in print so prices only go down overtime. You can buy season 12 on Amazon right now for $25 USD
I have nearly filled up all the gaps in my DVD collection so thought I might not worry with Blu-ray. Then I saw lots of reviews about how good the boxsets were and got quite excited to buy them. I was then horrified to find that they are selling out straight away and then being put on eBay, and the like, for hundreds of pounds. Pretty disgusting the way people rip off real fans but what can you do? Guess I'll stick with my DVDs and hope that the BBC re-release the sets in greater numbers so the sets de-value in price!
I've pre-ordered Season 17 for Christmas because I'm really liking how these Collection sets look. It'll also be cool to have them on Blu-Ray and see the new special features. Doesn't mean I'm not gonna stop collecting the DVDs though!
Great video Josh. I'm purchasing the collection sets because I had to sell my R1 DVD collection to pay bills. To me, The Collection sets are by far more affordable. Unfortunately, the R1 sets are in plain Blu-ray cases without all of the great art and design the UK and AUS sets have. I believe the Beeb will release them again down the road when new tech arrives.
Here in Germany, we actually get Classic Who on Blu-ray without having to buy a boxset for a lot of money on eBay. Even the special features are included! Sadly, mostly fifth doctor stories have been released and the other doctors don't seem to get the blu-ray treatment.
I'm actually new to being a fan of doctor who. I started watching the classic series a few years back, and series 12 of new who was the first one I got to watch as it was being released. So I never bought the VHS versions and only have a handful of DVDs. So obviously it's a no brainer to buy these for me. The only thing is that I'm an American which is both good and bad. We don't get the amazingly designed box sets that other countries get, just a standard bluray box, we also get them months later. But there doesn't seem to be any limitation on how many they release. I often see the older ones still on shelves.
The American versions of these are already in normal blu ray cases. I didn't even know they were doing the cool fancy artistic boxes until recently. Kinda bummed they're impossible to get now, but the standard blu ray cases are widely available and don't go out of print as quickly
A. Utterly adore you. B. Really cross about the difference in the range size in Australia. Not fair at all. C. Your shirt is so gorgeous. D. Love the new CGI and really love the 'Behind the Sofa' segments on the discs. E. The difference between the difference between the STTNG blu-rays and classic Who blu-rays is that the BBC is always and boringly forever cheap. F. Yes, I will continue buying the range as long as they provide new and interesting content. G. I do enjoy your channel and wish you all the very best for the future xxxx
Thanks Josh, Thanks for mentioning the difficulty in getting the uk box sets. I managed the get some but due to international restrictions on some sites, I’ve purchased the last 3 locally. The downside of this, Months of delays Eg season 10 was to be released in August. This then got delayed to October. At this time, the production and distribution of doctor who was being changed from village roadshow to universal. The packaging is different as mentioned in the video and the discs look like they’ve been printed with an inferior printer. I’ll still keep buying though 😂
It's not so much if you'll get a damaged set in the post, it's more when will you get a damaged one and will it be damage you can live with. On one of my brother's the velcro tab didn't work and my season 26 had a crushed corner but I was able to flatten it out.
First there were the VHS. Then DVD, Then some of the first release DVD were released again as Special Edition DVDs with updated mastering and additional extras. With some only being released in box sets with other stories you porobably already had. Finally after you complete your dvd set. They start randomly releasing classic seasons one by one on blu-ray. At lease with the new series revival starting the ninth doctor from 2005 onwards its not hard to get on blu-ray. Even if the first 4 blu-ray releases were only upscaled SD. Unlike the classic series blu-rays sets that sell out rather quickly. Meaning you have to pay premium release prices for these or miss out as they end up scalper priced.
I'm gonna try and get one per Doctor and all of the McCoy seasons because McCoy is the best. There aren't many things I wouldn't do for season 24 as soon as possible.
Having started buying with season 23 on releases, then picked up season 19 when HMV had extra stock and 18 from CEX at about £65, and recently having ordered the season 12 rerelease, I am now very close to having a complete set. However it feels like season 10 may prove to be the most elusive, and I am financially preparing myself to enter some ebay bidding wars.
Unfortunately I only started collecting at Season 18 and I missed season 10. Because of the scalpers. I hear they'll be reprinting Season 12. Later this year. If so i'm just gonna try and keep a little extra money tucked away.
Ouch! Afraid you're too late Ethan. Season 12 just came out a few days ago (like you I missed out first time around), but it seems (on Amazon anyway) to have completely sold out on pre-orders. The only listing there now is marketplace scalpers.
Has there been a release since Tom Baker Season 3/Season 14? I got that way back in August and haven't even heard an announcement about anymore upcoming sets.
Great review Josh, very helpful. Do you know if there's a way to tell just from the front covers if they have the deluxe, folding packaging or just the booklet-insert? If I'm chopping out that much I want to make sure I get the best packaging.
Did they do a 'Behind the sofa' with Sarah Sutton for terminus? I remember reading something where she was asked about her outfit (or lack of) and she said it was a thankyou to the fans. I must admit Nyssa was my favourite companion as she was so smart and could hold her own with the Doctor.
I got very lucky in a HMV back in October on my birthday when I found a copy of Season 19 sitting on a shelf. Thankfully the Doctor Who section had been tucked at the back and when I asked if there were any more they had the original S12 in stock. As far as I know they still have stocks of Season 10 and 26. Season 12's last copy recently dissapeared however because of a certain someone...hehe....NYAHAHAHAHAHA! Love ya vids Josh! :)
Q: How many times are we going to buy Doctor Who?
A: Yes
Why didn't they call them Who-rays?
Please consult your local Josh Snares to see if Doctor Who: the Collection is right for you
Being from England and having the dvd spines in nice neat rows, the people behind the Aussie versions clearly hate those with ocd
Purely a cost-saving measure by the distributor
Yes, It's so goddamn annoying. People don't realise how annoying it can be a Doctor Who fan in Australia. I want to get the 13th Doctor Electronic TARDIS but here it's around $60.
only good thing was that in Sydney I didn’t have to pre order or pay $300 for the season 26 box set I got it 2 weeks after release by just walking into the store
@@Callumari13 It is more annoying if you are living in continental Europe and Amazon UK cancels your pre-orders in late December due to Brexit, by a time when the set is sold out everywhere.
ours are good (british ones) but usually the entertainment 2 logo or whatever is always different at the bottom
For me, it's worth it for having entire seasons as boxsets. It feels like a promise that we'll eventually get the entire series.
I bought a series 18 Blu Ray, but I left it at my parents' place when I went on vacation. I'm thinking about buying it again because I really liked what I saw.
Why didn't you just go get your Blu Ray set back once your vacation ended?
Personally, I started collecting the Blu-rays as I've not delved too deep into the classic series. So, for the most part, these collections are my first experiences with the stories. Although I mainly find myself just staring at Lee Binding's incredible artwork more than the stories haha
I'm not the biggest fan of the limited edition nature of the releases ATM.
Man, I wish there was a legit B5 blu-ray release.
Babylon 5 heaven.... i mean 4K!!!!!! yes please
I really think they’d be a lot of demand for a decent B5 Blueray release. The good thing with B5 is it was shot on 35 mm film, so the live action scenes would look great. I understand that it’s the CGI effects that are the problem.
Best of luck with your project, it sounds great!
Yeah man, good luck with that
AFAIK, B5 is currently getting an upscale. Hopefully they will re-render the CGI in higher resolutions as well.
But the real question is... where’s ma Laserdisc release?
I believe there actually were some doctor who laser discs. They didn't last long, though.
Ark in Space , Day of Daleks , 5 Doctors (NTSC) Terror of Zygons all released on laserdisc . And there was a view master too😅
@@movieflicktube also revenge of the Cybermen, brain of morbius, and the TV movie
What about Betamax?
That’s so annoying!
@@elphive42 I mean they do shoot down in price after a while, but yeah they're pretty expensive on initial release.
If you have a local Barnes and Noble, they always have a 50% off British Television sale the week of release. I've gotten all but 1 of the sets 39$ or below but I believe it's in-store only?
8:55 Josh Snares actual time traveller confirmed
Seeing that the season sets are scalped is mind blowing. In the states, they're basically on clearance, selling for $30 each, but instead of being in really nice boxes, they're in standard Blu-ray arm cases.
The North American releases for every season of The Collection are actually still in print and are pretty affordable ranging between $30-$50 Canadian (though only after a few months of already being released). The only downside is we get them in standard bluray cases (that vary in size and some have slipcovers while others don't). Plus we gotta wait 3-4 months after it comes out everywhere else.
As much as I want to watch the video I have to keep it paused at 0:53 for reasons
Hear hear!
Josh: uploads 2 videos back to back
Me: impossible
It's worth noting that with North American box sets the packaging is just standard Blu-Ray packaging with a cardboard sleeve, and the size varies between releases.
Great video, Josh. I just wanted to make a few points, if I may, and I apologize for the length of the comment:
Firstly, yes the SD footage is upscaled, but this is not simply a case of zooming in the SD footage to fill an HD frame.
In that respect, the Blu-ray audio beats the DVD releases hands down.)
The optional CGI is a welcome addition and it doesn't bother me that it is not available on every story.
0:03 the layout of the spines on all of those DVDs are driving me crazy!! Haha :P
"How many times are we going to buy Doctor Who here?"
As many times as it's released. ;)
The outdoor scenes in Castrovalva are gorgeous
The normal blu-rays work too. I’ve been collecting them a lot lately. Thank you for all your wonderful content, Josh Snares! You’re one of the reasons I’ve been watching a lot of Classic Who lately. I hope all of Classic Who is added to Blu-ray. (This is my first collection, so I’d have no problem upgrading.)
Happy you're enjoying the Classic series :)
Josh Snares I’ve been watching Pertwee lately. But I’m gonna be watching Davison and the TV movie.
Seriously considering getting the season 10, 12, 18 and 19 Blu-Rays because of the 16mm on location filmed sequences that can be re scanned in HD, however I'm not sure about the season 23 and 26 sets, because after season 22 everything was shot purely on tape that won't look any better than the DVDs.
seasons 10 and 12 have zero surviving 16mm film elements
season 18 I think only has the brief Brighton Beach sequence at the beginning
Season 19 is the only one (and will remain so) with a significant amount of genuine HD material
People often forget that the vast majority of the 16mm film was quickly destroyed
@@Yetaxa Did not know that, I guess that falls in line with the BBCs general short-sightedness.
There is 4K on the Peter Davison set, the first episode. The behind the sofa shows you get are a must for Dr Who fans
Janet Fielding is the Queen of "Behind the Sofa"
100% she is brilliant! My favourite on the sofa!
When she takes out her blanket, you know she's in it for real
Haven’t seen any of the segments but I could already tell she’d dominate the features
She’s hilarious
Love her!
Always in combination with Sarah Sutton and Wendy Padbury.
I really wish one day there would be classic and modern Dr who all in one big collector set
Riain Biehle I’ll sacrifice pizazz for more space.
I've bought all of the Blu Ray releases this far, and I am in love with them - especially the Season 19 box. It's so beautifully presented.
You forgot "first we taped them from TV" ...
It's okay, I'm getting the collections now - if the scalpers don't get them first X-(
Josh do you have any suggestions about where a fellow Aussie fan can get some of the individual Classic stories on DVD, cause they only stock a few specific choices at JB Hi-Fi and I can't really find any other places, either in store or online, that have any.
Make me miss the days when the ABC shop was around and stocked rows and rows of Doctor Who DVDs...
I bought most of mine off eBay
Thank you!
Also, do Region 2 DVDs work on Region 4 players? I saw someone say that they did, but I just wanted to check :)
I agree entirely on that. The current Logo is this total mess of a version of Doctor Who! Not Doctor Who at all! :-(
Behind the sofa is my favorite as well
I am new to Classic Who and I am getting the blu-ray boxsets with the DVDs.
So far I got 23 and 26, soon im getting 14.
Thankfully, the biggest worry people have with these releases (the limited edition part) has now been removed thanks to the Standard Edition releases
Although because i’m a perfectionist, I still tried my best to get the older sets in the original packaging for decent prices (it took a while but I was successful)
Amazon US has it for $24.99 us. Not sure if that helps you in Aus...
I’m going to get every season box set I could get my hands on
I’ve yet to own season 12 and 14
Also, is it worth buying the 2nd Doctor animations individually on blu ray, or wait for the complete series boxsets in the future?
For example , Season 12 comes out next Monday and will have it Friday 😀I can’t help myself either and collect waaaaay too much 😅
Season 12 re-issue contains discs with Season 10 disc labels. This set is cursed
To expensive for me and i don’t have a blu ray player, im fine with my complete DVD collection that i only completed last November
If you are in Australia I would recommend them because I simply cannot stand the way the spines are un-aligned!
I live in continental Europe and have the UK boxes. Everthing is fine except the problems and higher prices caused by Brexit.
Prices going up isn't a problem in the US. I believe all of them are still in print so prices only go down overtime. You can buy season 12 on Amazon right now for $25 USD
Yeah but the US versions are in the crappy packaging which is why they’re cheap, it’s only the UK limited versions that are gong for £££
I noticed no William Hartnell box set.. why? Do these box sets include all missing episodes that have been found up until now?
Great video again im still on edge getting these boxset
Thanks Josh,
Thanks for mentioning the difficulty in getting the uk box sets.
I managed the get some but due to international restrictions on some sites, I’ve purchased the last 3 locally.
The downside of this,
Months of delays
Eg season 10 was to be released in August.
I lost my vhs and dvds to s House fire a few years back so I'm thinking blurays are the way I'm going.
I like this channel. Very well put together and glad he’s not afraid to ask the “awkward” questions. 👍🏻
I plan to get these eventually but I’m sad that bbc america didn’t do the nice package and just gave us a thick bluray case.
I will be buying each Blu-Ray release as it becomes available.
nice video, well written and genuinely informative - bravo and thanks
I'm gonna try and get one per Doctor and all of the McCoy seasons because McCoy is the best. There aren't many things I wouldn't do for season 24 as soon as possible.
McCoy's cool, but S24 is godawful...
your wish has been granted lmao
Having started buying with season 23 on releases, then picked up season 19 when HMV had extra stock and 18 from CEX at about £65, and recently having ordered the season 12 rerelease, I am now very close to having a complete set. However it feels like season 10 may prove to be the most elusive, and I am financially preparing myself to enter some ebay bidding wars.
your absolutely right with postal problems i had to send back 2 or 3 bozsets of Big Finish
Season 8 is up next
I'm currently watching "A Weekend with Waterhouse" and it is genuinely phenomenal. Probably my favourite special feature ever.
Underrated youtuber !
Great review Josh, very helpful. Do you know if there's a way to tell just from the front covers if they have the deluxe, folding packaging or just the booklet-insert? If I'm chopping out that much I want to make sure I get the best packaging.
Have a full collection of the DVDs so was going online debating whether to order these and saw this video excellent timing
The US ones aren’t limited edition but they don’t have the nice cases or info booklets and are just regular blu rays
That season isn’t out yet!
