  • When the BBC started releasing Doctor Who the Collection with Season 12 i decided i WASN'T going to get them, and a little while later I made a video explaining why.
    fast forward a year and a half.... and I've changed my mind. Here's why

      I'm not just a big fan of Doctor Who but I love Other film series and TV shows so room is the most important thing.
      I'm a big fan of classic archive television.
      Old Doctor Who's on DVD then when they were released a season box sets The classic who are decided to by the standard editions then the stories that go with this Seasons I've getting rid of the DVDs to upgrade to Blu-ray wow Quality special features stunning.

    The thing that sold me on it was the idea that you’d own the classic series in full season sets for the first time and extra bonus features that range from exploring the past and the impact of the legacy of the show.

    One thing I would love to see in the new releases (which none have done so far) is to have the option of seeing each Doctor Who story edited together in “movie mode” where it’s not broken up into episodes. Just like how it was when I watched it on PBS as a kid.

    • @CulturePhilter
      @CulturePhilter  2 года назад +1

      That would be an interesting way to present them. I can’t see the harm in offering it as an option as long as individual episode way is also on the disc.

    Pre-ordering generally doesn't cost you anything if you use a credit or debit card with a website like Amazon or Zavvi. They only charge your card when the order is ready to ship. So as long as you have the funds available by the time the set ships, you're good. If you don't have the funds, you can cancel before it ships. If you pre-order on a website that takes Paypal, then funds are usually taken from your account right away.

    You see online comparison videos and the difference in image quality appears negligible, but having seen the HD Blu-Ray quality versions available on Pluto TV, I was actually surprisingly impressed by how good they look. I assumed that seeing those bubble wrap monsters in HD would be self-defeating, making it seem more tacky, but actually it gives me greater appreciation for how cool those practical effects and costumes were. You can see a great level of detail any time there's a closeup shot of an actor or prop. Otherwise, from a distance the improvement over DVD quality is negligible. But in those few moments of close-up, you can definitely tell it looks better than any previous release. Best part of it all is, they still feel like 70s television. A lot of the times Blu-Ray modern re-releases completely erase the "feel" of the original era which feels like whitewashing history and erasure of culture from the record, but these Blu-Rays thankfully don't do that. They retain that same feel that the episodes deserve.

    Get out of my head! I swear I could have made this video almost point for point... but with an American twist.
    I chose not to start collecting these because I was very close to completing my U.S. DVD collection. I felt like I didn't need the duplication and anyway, I was disappointed that the beautiful limited edition versions didn't appear to be coming out here. By the time I realized that was the case I had missed out on Season 12 and I couldn't bear either paying the ridiculous price OR having an incomplete set. By this time I had seen some of the new features and really regretted my decisions all-around. So... when they announced the re-release of Season 12 I finally bought my region-free BluRay player, preordered the set, and found the others for not-much-more-than-retail. I've been pre-ordering them ever since.
    I love your idea of ordering the stories based on when they happen in the Doctor's timeline... but I'm afraid my particular brand of OCD wouldn't allow it! I'll be keeping DVDs, Blu-Rays, books, and audio separate on my personal Doctor Who shelf (shrine?).
    Anyway, I completely relate to your obsession and thought process and this video had me smiling the whole way through. :)

    • @CulturePhilter
      @CulturePhilter  2 года назад

      Yeah there are downsides to my chronological ordering. It’s terrible optimization of space as every shelf gap would have to be that of the tallest item on it (probably the collected DWM comics) so I’d need much more shelf space than ordering by media type. I honestly doubt I’d ever have the space to actually do it.

      Guy Grist - with Big Finish I tend to stick to 8th Doctor and Gallifrey stuff on physical media and get the rest download only. Although I’m almost out of shelf space for those too. I can maybe fit 3 more boxsets in.

    I have a terrible habit of building up collections and discarding them. I never got past vol 50 of Peanuts papebacks, I gave up on Target books when they came out so often I couldn't afford them. Also, I look at all these products and get depressed by the amount of money they represent. Now I am quite elderly I see so many people selling off their collections of stuff or just dying leaving rooms filled with things that have gone from realy important to utterly pointless. Happy Christmas! Buy more stuff!

    • @CulturePhilter
      @CulturePhilter  3 года назад

      gsam2020 - that’s fair enough. I actually think for the amount of stories you tend to get on them they are better value than the DVDs when they first came out but it’s a big outlay at once.

    Since Bonus Features have started to disappear from DVDs and with DVDs now getting cheaper due to many now being available online I’ve also now gotten an odd relationship with DVDs as while I should probably buy the physical edition and can always own it I don’t really want to.
    Also since series 9 I’ve kinda been Disenfranchised by the Doctor Who brand, this resurfaced again this year with how shoddily the Time Lord Victorious was being marketed & how the bbc has a whole has kinda given up with the show again. The fact that the bbc are slowly becoming more Tory doesn’t help.
    The official Doctor Who Facebook page hasn’t been updated at all since Whittaker took over the role and for me that kinda compounds the fact that overall the bbc just want my money even if these Blu ray sets are made by people who actually care

    Ah, I was hoping you were getting rid of them. It's harder for Americans to get them because we can't preorder until 30 days prior to release day. Sadly, I missed out on Season 14 and now it's become rather pricey to acquire.

      @@CulturePhilter I think they are universally accepted as being not very good. So why issue 18 and 23 before a whole load of seasons that are way way better. Even if you are Colin Baker fan, 22 is better than 23, and anything Tom Baker did prior to 18 is better.

    • @CulturePhilter

      Neddy Stark - that’s an argument about which they should release in why order. But I suspect most people will be buying the whole set if they can rather than just cherry-picking their favorite seasons so given that season 18 and 23 HAVE been released obviously those that want a complete set will probably buy it.
