    Nice camera angles and views. I am in Oklahoma and love my F750 GS. Amazing power and suspension and features like cruise and heated grips. Trying to decide to put on more off-road tires or change to the 390. My bike is 500 pounds and if I drop it….I wonder the costs?? Yours is 380. You have less power on highways. Both are great bikes. Without really knowing a lot of the context, I'd be wary of stepping down from a bigger bike, especially if you're doing long-distance touring. And I can't compare to F750 as I have no experience with them.

    • @FreeTimeAdventures
      @FreeTimeAdventures  Год назад

      I think it really depends on how back to the basics you're willing to go. You'll be missing out on a lot of amenities that are available on the bigger GS. But if you're okay with a bare bones 43hp single cylinder it's a wonderful little machine, albeit with some somewhat odd or irritating little quirks, which are common on 390 forum boards. I have a lot to say about this and hopefully I will do a full video this summer.

    New to your channel. Saw you after dork in the road camp out. I ride a 2017 BMW F800GS. Did the TAT on it coast to coast. Done the MABDR and am now looking at adding another bike to my stable for doing the western BDRs. I’m down to chiding between the Honda CRF 300 rally and the KTM 390 adventure. How good is the KTM off road? How does it handle a load? Did you modify the suspension at all? Just looking for real world feed back before pulling the trigger on either one.
    Thanks

    • @FreeTimeAdventures
      @FreeTimeAdventures  10 месяцев назад

      Awesome! That sounds rad, I hope you get out to the west for them BDR's!
      As for the KTM 390 Adventure vs CRF300 Rally choice, this is the same set I really struggled between when picking myself. What made the decision for me was simply that there were 390's on every KTM dealer lot, and I couldn't find a CRF300 Rally to save my life.
      That said, the KTM makes more power, and yeah, it does pull a load. I'm a full 200 lbs and add in my camping gear and riding gear - that's a solid weight. I also have had a passenger weighing in at 130 lbs on the bike, and it manages the weight just fine in terms of power and on-road performance. You can ride two up all day at 75mph if you want.
      When it comes to offroad, the KTM, with its adjustable suspension, is amazing if you're sub 200lbs. At that weight, I am pushing the limits of the stock suspension. Mine currently is stock (but that's changing in the next couple of months wink*). Even at 200lbs, it will run fine if you pick a good line and manage your pace. On rough BDR trails, I can pull 30mph stints out of it without the suspension getting out of wack in sport settings.
      Where it runs into a solid limitation is with ground clearance. I have to more carefully pick my lines. Adding to that is that it's difficult to find a good skidplate, I am on. My 3rd one now from T-Rex, and hopefully, that meets expectations.
      If you want more off-road chops and ground clearance and can sacrifice 15 ponies, get the CRF, and upgrade its suspension, there's a lot of options for it.
      If you want to carry more load and have more power on tap, grab the KTM.
      Also, my two latest videos are much more offroad oriented, especially the 2nd to last one where I am riding dual tracks in an OHV park. If you want to see generally what offroad performance is like with some knobby tires and stock suspension, that's not a bad spot to look.
      I ride it like it's a dirt bike, and personally, I love it, but there's some limitations like any bike. Also, if you get a 390, get the spoked wheels that are optional on the 23'+ models (see most recent video for why).
      One last thing, ghe KTM is quirky, it does some weird stuff sometime and can be kinda finicky, so just be aware of that, it's not a Japanese bike, but so far in 9k miles over 18 months, nothing has actually stopped me from riding it, just some dopey weird problems that have come up. I'll make a video about that this fall probably..
      Anyway, longest comment ever...

      Thank you for the reply. That’s the info I’m interested in. I’m a semi retired old guy that needs a new hip. The F800 GS and I have done some riding but with a bum hip a lighter dual sport and lower seat height is what I need. I’ll still ride the F800 though. My nephew who rides with me and I are headed out west next summer. Trying to knock out the Idaho, Oregon and Washington BDRs in 25 days. We’ll most likely trailer the bikes out to Idaho and ride over to the coast. I’ll be watching your videos for the suspension mods. I like the horsepower and features of the KTM over the crf. What I don’t like is that at 5’8” the seat height on the crf is tall even with the squat as you sit on it.
      Thanks again for the reply.

    • @FreeTimeAdventures
      @FreeTimeAdventures  10 месяцев назад +1

      @scudrunneradv3269 okay, makes sense with that extra context. I'm 5'9" with a 29" inseam and the 390 is definitely a bit more manageable in the seat height department.
      I think you could honestly go either way. On the one hand. The 300 is tall, but I personally would have that suspension setup and tuned by a professional before doing any serious offroad, and if you're at that point already, you can just have them adjust the height to your desired level. On the other hand, if you're sub 200lbs at your height, you will be totally fine with the stock suspension on the 390, BUT you will need to invest in a good skid plate and be a little more careful about how you pick your lines.
      Good luck on your adventures and I hope that helps!

      Not really, the 390 doesn't seem to have that issue. It also doesn't really get below 40° Fahrenheit very often where I live, so if you live and ride somewhere colder, that may be different.
      The only caveat is that you do need to give it a couple of minutes to warm up. My other fuel injected bikes, you can just start em and go if you really need to, but the 390 has a tendency to flame out at intersections for the first couple minutes of riding if I don't let it warm up while getting my gear on.

      @@FreeTimeAdventures I’m surprised he got that much “punishment”. Life here is pretty good. Riding an ADV is a must as the roads aren’t that great. Lots of places to explore even though I haven’t done much off roading here. The weather is similar to Houston Texas but the environment feels like Hawaii. Most people are pretty nice outside of Manila. You’ve got to pay attention riding out here as there are few road rules that are followed but you get used to it. The lack of traffic enforcement does make the expressways fun if you know what I mean. I ride a Moto Morini X-Cape 650. It’s basically a much better designed and equipped versys 650. Same engine built with license from Kawasaki and built in the same factory as the KTM 790/890 in china. Marzocchi forks, KYB shock, tubeless spoked wheels, and Brembo brakes make up some of the upgrades over the Kawasaki. I added a rekluse clutch (versys version was direct bolt in), custom exhaust and Harley PA accessory lights. This is my 25th bike and can totally recommend. Will probably get the CF Moto 800 MT (KTM 790 engine) after I get bored with this one. I usually only keep a bike for a year then try something else.

      Sure thing, the actual mount is a KTM factory accessory you can get at any KTM dealer. The Garmin Zumo XT that I am using comes with a quick detach plate that wires directly to the battery and bolts to the factory KTM accessory mount without any modification.
      Also, congrats on the new bike!

    Anyone ever rode with a passenger on the road? I understand that is not what this bike was really designed for, but I am curious how it would do with a passenger for a 30 minute ride or so (super uncomfortable, tolerable, better than expected for a small bike). I enjoy your content

      I have had a passenger on it, and it's not bad. It's not exactly a GS, but it's definitely not terrible. Seems fine for a 30-minute to 1 hour from what my passenger said.
      For reference, I'm 5'9" and 200lbs they were 5'3" and 125lbs.

      Me n my wife do long tours all the time... And we do like 500-600 @ day.. since the beginning i have never heard her complain anything about the comfort.. seats are super comfy.. foot pegs positioning is good too..
      And for rider's perspective... When you're on highways doing 70-80miles an hour.. bike almost becomes weightless.. you'll feel there's no one sitting behind you..
      Only thing you need to take care is ( for your pillion's / passengers comfort )
      1. Always have a tail bag.. for passengers back support.. make sure you fix the bag tight.. not even 1-2cm of movement should be there.. it acts as a chair for your passenger when you're riding 500-600 miles per day
